Samsung Vibrant will turn on but locks up with some kind of error screen. It will not boot into recovery or download mode. I tried different batteries, sim cards and sd cards. Just locks up. Please help. Attached is a copy of the only screen that shows up.
Thanks
This is all over this forum, phone to pc screen, but here we go one more time for old times sake. This works on mine to get to dl mode every time, if it doesnt work at first, have patience and keep trying.
1. Remove battery, sd card and sim card.
2. Launch Odin on your pc and have the proper pit and pda files loaded and ready to go.
3. Plug your usb cable into your pc, then into your phone.
4. Hold down both volume up and volume down buttons, and pop the battery in. This should put you in dl mode, and you'll see a com port light up in Odin.
5. Now its happy flashing time.
If when you pop the battery in you get the charging icon, remove battery, make sure both buttons are pressed, and pop the battery back in. If again this doesn't work, try holding just the volume down when putting the battery in.
If all else fails, search the forums. I would have posted some links but I'm on my phone, your answers are out here 100 times over.

Was messing around trying to restore the phone back to stock using: [ROM] OFFICIAL T-Mo Vibrant JFD ODIN/Nandroid Backup Images 7/29/10 (Tested/Working)
Odin never got passed file analysis.
Phone showed yellow digger but not progress bar.
I gave up and ended up popping the battery out of the phone. Apparently that is a bad idea.
Now, when I try to power up or even plug in the usb cable, it is displaying a phone on the left, a pc on the right with a caution sign with "!" in between the two.
Any hope for me?
-Greg
Same thing happened to me....."twice" I'm a little more hard headed than most. Anyways, I went back to t-mobile and they exchanged both times - so maybe check that out. I haven't seen anyway yet to get past that "phone > pc" screen.
-Good luck
Wonderful... I got the phone used.
Been playing with it for a while. Trip to the T-mobile store... call to Samsung tech... was looking pretty bleak.
With the screen displaying the phone....pc, it wouldn't do a thing. Plugging in the USB, nothing (no beep beep notification from PC either). This told me for whatever reason, the USB boot loader was failing.
I tried a different approach. Rather than hold vol up and down then power, then connect USB (or USB before the sequence)... I decided to see if plugging in the USB as the power trigger would work. IT DID!!
So, to spell it out. Pull battery to get phone turned off. Put batter back in. No SIM, no SD. Hold vol up and down then plug in USB cable attached to PC. Voiala - Little digging guy ready to flash.
Flashed it with the stock ROM and am golden again.
-Greg
Greg you are a life saver. Thanks! Worked for me!
If it will do anything you can bring it back to life... a true brick wont do anything... wont even show the battery status when plugged in...

So, I've been trying to restore my phone after some modding gone bad...but now, I've gotten to the point where I can't even get to the green battery screen. My phone won't turn on, and it'll only display this screen with a phone icon connecting to a yellow triangle which is connecting to a computer.
Has anyone gotten this before?
More importantly, is this fixable? Or am I gonna have to file an insurance claim for a "phone that got dropped in a lake" this week?
Use the search option. It will do wonders. This has happened plenty of times before. ODIN can fix the problem.
1. Take out battery, put it back in. (to turn the phone fully off)
2. Don't turn it the phone on!
3. Plug the phone into your PC, do not hit the power button!
4. See if the phone shows anything on the screen
IF the phone screen does show the battery charger or something else on the screen after being plugged in without you hitting the power button, so far so good.
5. Now while it's on like this, hold the volume up and volume down buttons.
6. Hold the power button as well as the volume buttons until the screen goes black.
7. As soon as the screen goes black, let go of the power button! But DON'T let go of the volume buttons!

The best luck i had getting my phone into download mode was pulling the battery, putting it back in. holding vol up+down and plugging it in. instead of going to charging, it goes to download immediately.
All messages related to "3 hardware key combo to get back to download mode so that you can use ODIN to restore", or "use adb to get to download mode so you can use ODIN" only work when the 3 hardware key combo work in the first place, or your PC can recognize the phone for adb to work
I am one of the unlucky one that does not have this 3 hardware key combo working, and am also in this sad state (Phone-!-PC). As a result, PC is not seeing the phone, so adb is out of the question right now
My phone has been like this since last Thursday (a failed attempt to use ODIN to flash JAC's OC/Ext4 kernel). All my reading so far does not give me a fuzzy feeling that I can ever get back to Download mode (ON MY PHONE)
I called my carrier for a replacement, and it should arrive this morning...
If someone can actually get to download mode WITHOUT the 3 hardware key combo OR adb access, I would love to know how
Had the EXACT same problem. Here is how I fixed it:

Glad that this work for you
But not for me, for some unknown reason
No SIM
No SD Card
Pulled battery out
Make sure screen is off
Put battery in
Hold Volume up/down
plug USB cable to phone
plug USB cable to PC
Bam! Phone-!-PC
Update: Got my replacement phone.
Have SIM in
Have SD Card in
Leave Battery in
Turn off Phone
Hold Volume up/down
plug USB cable to phone
plug USB cable to PC
Instant Download mode!
Just as I read, it's a luck of the draw whether you have a TMobile Vibrant that has the 3 button key combo disabled. My first one doesn't have it. My second one does
I'm using donut with NAND. This morning my phone seemed to have drained the battery overnight, and was completely off. When I plug it in it in the charge light will not come on. The battery has enough juice to almost complete the boot, but always dies just as the lock screen comes up.
I've been trying to search for possible solutions. Some posts seem to say that it is normal for the phone not to charge while off or booting (thought I thought mine did), but I definitely have this now. One suggested going to the coke bootloader screen to charge. this does not work for me. I tied flashing back to WinMo, but my PC can't see the phone through usb. I also tried a hard reset. One suggestion said to have a Verizon store charge the battery. So I guess I'll try that next and report back.
Any help or confirmation that my phone is bricked and I should just give up, is appreciated!
try going into boot loader, you know power+camera+rest button, and let it charge in that for 5 min, then try and boot
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that and it didn't seem to be working (I didn't see a charge indication led come on). Maybe it is charging and it just does not indicate it? I'll give it a try again. I'm just worried that if I completely drain the battery then I'll have no chance to start it up and charge at all.
nope that killed it alright. guess it wasn't charging after all. Guess my only hope now if Verizon, or finding another working vogue to charge it.
And it still makes me wonder if the not charging problem will remain. If I could only flash back to Winmo. Is there a way to do that without a usb link to the PC?
Flash back windows via sd
copy the nbh file of windows rom to the /sdcard
rename it to VOGUEIMG.nbh
press camera button
connect usb
4 color screen appears
release camera button
press power
restart
connect the phone to power source all the night
flash back android.
The charge light will not come on when in bootloader mode, but I assure you the phone will charge. I plugged it in and put it in bootloader mode for about 20 minutes, then was able to continue.
I had the EXACT same problem a few months ago.
NuAngel
In boot loader mode it doesn't charge, you need to flash windows and then reflash android.

Again, I've been through this myself. The light may not come on, but the battery DOES charge when in bootloader mode. Please do not misinform. The OP does not have to re-flash - and, in fact, it may be impossible to re-flash without a healthier charge to the battery.
NuAngel
Sure? I test it in polaris and in kaiser and it doesn't charge.
Probably vogue has a different power connection inside.
Good to know

i have done it too
In my case the phone was not charging in boot loader mode. I let it sit plugged in like that and it completely killed the factory battery as well as my extended one.
I went to Verizon but they said they didn't have a vogue phone anymore and so couldn't charge my battery.
I ordered one of these, but had to wait awhile to get it from Hong Kong. I just got it today and was able to charge my battery, but even after booting into android my phone will not charge the battery its self. I've tried with the AC cord, and usb which I know is a good cord. Maybe something in my phone got fried? I'll try going back to windows next.
My solution (which is using the same phone NuAngel more then likely had an issue with, since he gave it to me) was to go out and get a new battery charger. The chargers connector itself had become worn out. I was able to pickup a fantastic generic Touch/Touch Pro/Touch Pro2 charger at Walmart for $15 or so, Now the phone chargers fine (although it still touchy when flashing via USB).
In short, the USB port is really getting worn out on this thing, but I can still do data at times, even though its not getting a charge (via USB).. its odd at times.
So maybe that's my problem, the usb port has worn out. I can't seem to get a charge or data.
So now I'm having trouble flashing windows from the sd card. I tried to follow the above post:

If you want to re-flash your nand back to wm, here is the instruction:
1. find your wm rom, it will be the RUU_Singed.nbh
2. copy the RUU_Signed.nbh to SD card as VOGUIMG.nbh, pull the battery, replace, press power and hold camera button and reset hole, this should start the flash process.
Note that the SD card must be formatted FAT32, or it will not be finding the VOGUIMG.nbh.
Even simpler:
- put the phone into boot loader mode (power + camera + reset pinhole, you should see the tricolor screen)
- plug into USB of computer
- Flash the windows mobile rom right from windows using whichever rom install file you want.

I downloaded NFSFAN's 6.5 in a rar file from here, opened it with 7zip, copied RUU_signed.nbh to the root of the sd card (FAT32), changed the name to VOGUEIMG.nbh .
I assume I can't use any of the instructions that involve the usb port, and I can't figure out if I am supposed to be doing something different with the button holds. I'm just holding power, reset, and camera at boot up to get to the boot loader screen right? After that screen pops up I get a quick flash to a white screen that says something like "Loading... File not found!" then back to the 4 color screen that says Serial.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks.
The nbh should be renamed to "VOGUIMG.nbh" not "VOGUEIMG.nbh"
However, I am not sure if it will actually help fix your problem.
Thanks for that correction. I was using VOGUEIMG.nbh, but sadly changing it to VOGUIMG.nbh did not seem to fix anything.
Now I found this thread which says to flash from sdcard
egzthunder1 said:
Your SD card has to be:
*Formatted for FAT32
*Be 2GB or less
*Not be SDHC
Simply do what you are doing (rename file and drop in the root of the SD card, put the device in bootloader, and the device takes care of the rest.... it should work.
Good luck!

My card is 2 GB so I assume it is not SDHC. The HC stands for High Capacity right? (not Host Controller which shows up in the properties for the card in windows)
I would plug the phone into a wall charger if you are going to use the SD card method. I haven't tired this method, but I would assume it would work best when not plugged in at all, and the battery is +50% charged.
If the phone doesn't have a valid image installed, you should automatically get the three screen on first startup, so there shouldn't be a need to use the key combo. You should only have to pull the battery if you plan on leaving the phone off.
Just to clarify, using the wall charger does not charge my phone, but I did buy an external battery charger, so I can make sure it is above 50%. Also I do have android installed as NAND so the bootloader is not automatically loaded on start up. I have to use the key combo. I'm just trying to flash back to Windows to see if it fixes the usb/charging problem. I've tried a couple of nhb files now in case one was corrupted, but the bootloader still does not see the files as valid. I'm using CoKe 2.31. I'm not sure what else to try.
So I've encountered the soft brick many times and been fine. Well now, after messing with Odin, the phone is off and won't come back on.
I've attempted turning it on with the power, power + vol up/down, plugged in, pulled the battery for a few mins and tried again, etc...
Is this a possible full on brick?
try doing it without pressing the power button
To expand a little on what chikin said
1. remove battery, sim and sd cards
2. plug in usb from phone to pc
3. holding only the volume buttons (up and down), pop the battery back in
This should launch you into dl mode. I remember last week someone was having the same issue, phone would not respong to anything and would not power on, and this method brought him to dl mode where he could use odin to flash to stock. If it doesn't work at first, keep trying, patience and persistence is the key.

Damn, think I am on the same boat and it's slowing sinking. Just got my phone last night too and followed the video on how to flash the AXURA Vibrant edition rom and everything appeared to go smoothly and then after it was done I rebooted my phone and now I can't turn it on and even tried the pulled battery method mentioned here too.
How long does it take after you pop in the battery? A few seconds or a minute before something comes up on screen? Thanks.
I'm trying with Atlas_v2.2.pit file but it just hangs on Set Partition. I left it overnight just in case, next morning it was still set partition. Using Odin 1.3 and latest SCH i500 drivers from Samsung website.
I also think there is something fundamentally wrong with my phone. I can't get the computer to see the download mode. IE if I connect without battery and press volume down, the phone goes into the download mode but computer and Odin don't see it. I have to:
1) put battery in
2) connect to the computer
3) wait until battery charge status shows up
4) do 3-finger salute
5) when screne goes off just hold volume down, the phone then goes into download mode (but computer still doesn't see it)
6) disconnect the usb cable (that's why battery must be in or otherwise phone would shut off)
7) reconnect usb cable
Then my computer sees it and I can then remove the battery, though I tried with battery in and with battery out, both with the same poor result. Looks like I'm screwed.
Ps. I tried this on four different computers with two different original samsung usb cables. In all cases the computers do not see the downloading mode unless I jump through hoops outlined above.

Great news...bad news.
It worked! It actually formatted the phone and loaded a rom (loaded geewiz 1.1 by accident, wanted powerwashed 2.0).
The bad news is after I disconnected the phone it won't restart. It's actually worse than that. Before I'd get the phone icon, triangle, computer icon. Now nothing. Black screen and absolutely nothing. 3-finger salute doesn't work and I can no longer put battery in, hold volume, press power for 2 seconds and let it go while holding volume and getting phone into downloading mode. It's absolutely dead and even when I put it into charger, the green battery icon doesn't come up (battery was full by the way).
One other thing. With battery in, it won't go into download mode when hooked up to pc. Without battery it will go into download mode, but computer won't see it.
edit- nvm

Have you tried using Odin to repartition with a pit file since getting your new battery...I don't know much about heimdall but from what I understand you should be able to use Odin if you can get to download mode

Ok I feel stupid writing this, but turns out I was simply impatient and the new battery was simply discharged. Put it in, let it stay in the phone, battery icon showed up, charged it for a while, then went into download mode, re-partitioned and reloaded a rom and everything is back to normal.
I'd like to thank everyone, for your help.
Special thanks go out to times_infinity whose tip allowed me to connect the phone to the PC and have a reliable download mode operation.
