[Q] how to measure ma? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Maybe a stupid question but how do i know how much ma my hd2 is using? i see everyone talking about it.
thanks

Download an app called Current Widget.

ah thanks.
one more question, is it normal that it's around 300ma when using the phone?

Depends what your phone is doing at the time but even with wifi on, bluetooth paired to a device and listening to music, my phone only hits 230ma

may be he just finished playing a game?

i am using MDJ FroYo Revolution v.1.1 [kernel: hastarin R8]. my radio is 2.14. i had wifi and bluetooth running and i was at 410ma. I stopped everything for the most part and it is resting at 308mA with no programs running. Isn't that high? any ideas on how to cut this down? i see in other post people getting 3-7. my battery life gets ne 4 hours tops. thanks.
just an update to show battery drain. i unpugged my phone for thirty minutes, from a full charge, and i went from 100% to 83% - doing nothing!!! there has got to be somehing seriously wrong here

Only think I can think of is if you try and switch android builds? Maybe try mdeejay or froyostone?

i have tried about 5 so far. there may be some that have better battery drain but they either have poor data connects oor another negative that won't allow me to keep it long enough to test the battery. There has got to be a remedy. thanks for the input.

[Q] Why the battery consumption is high in Android ROM

I have HD2 with

and I have turned of (Wifi , Bluteooth, GPS)
and I noticed the battery consumption is high in Android ROM, but in Windows Mobile very good , so what do you think the problem, and what about the solution

Some of this is due to the fact that android is still booting from the SD card

most of it is due to that the device can never 'sleep' or enter an idle mode. which is very low power. So the phone is always consuming power.
However with both of the android roms i am using i can go a full day with out charging with high usage.
Could be several reasons:
1. Your WinMo ROM may not be Android friendly.
2. You may need to boot into Android as quickly as possible using Exceller's Boot Loader (set for 3 seconds) and ensuring that the key lights are on when Haret is loading.
3. You may need to boot up Android a couple of times in Normal mode and not Hot Boot mode. This seems to be the cause for many people.
My TMOUS phone using VBNDroid RC3 ROM, 2.15.50.14 radio, Mdeejay Froyo Sense Clean 2.3 build and Hastarin's 8.5.1 kernel with stock Sandisk card can run for a couple of days with light use. I also have SetCPU and NoBars to help reduce the battery drain even more. I am seeing 3-5mA drain on standby with 150-300mA with WiFi and app use. How much battery drain are you seeing?

Motoman234,
You most definitely do quick replies and great work. Checked your build thread and noticed you already answered this person's question. So I do not know why they posted the same question here and in your build thread, was there first in fact before this thread, so don't know why people do these double posts. Maybe the moderator could either move this thread to your build thread or delete it altogether.
I am having similar battery issues with my device. I currently have a tmo Hd2 w/ Energy rom winmo build using 2.15 radio and the latest mdj build on a class 6 8gb. With typical usage i.e. 30 mins in calls, 75 text, 30 min pandora, gmaps for traffic, 30 web pages like newegg or cyclegear, 15 actually read emails, and maybe 5 pictures. With this usage I am getting 6-7 hrs battery life if I leave the data and cellular line active. If I throttle the radios via airplane mode (its my second line) and use wifi for all connections I can get almost 2 days out of the device. I use setcpu but dont see a big difference in either case. Well just thought I could contribute some input. Thanks for everyones hard work.

first off your sd card (class 6) draws more power. and the kernel has a lot to do with it. these are all based off a new kernel. very different. get the extended battery its worth it
you could also try just turning off data connection, that way you still get calls and regular text, then you can turn on wifi to get everything you lost with data when you need it.
You guys can also check out an app called "SuperPower XDA-BETA" which is on XDA and also on the Android market. It has a ton of power saving features including turning off data when the screen is off automatically (much more than just this) just an example.
Here is the link to the development thread-> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807989
Did you try to use the super power app? For me it has made my wireless connection stop working. WiFi still does but mobile data hasn't worked at all.

I think standby powerdrain is now acceptable with latest build's/kernels..It mostly 3-8Mah...I don't think its much lower than that even in WinMo..because rated standby time for HD2 in ideal scenario (on which rating is done) is 480Hrs on a 1230mAh battery which gives ~ 3mAh standby drain..
Even During the call the drain is acceptable its mostly 220-250mAh with screen off...so a 1230mAh battery is going to give you approx 5.5 hour talktime which is again close to rated 6hr talktime of HD2 with WinMo...
The main problem is display and Android Apps...they draw huge power, and I think even Native android phones from Motorola, HTC etc are suffering from same too. I've seen Evo, tmobile touch 4g, droid x owners complain how their phone barely last 1 day with moderate usage and such...There's only one exception though i.e. Galaxy S which many people claim has good battery, other than than that i've not seen a single android phone of > 3.7'' display being praised for battery....

[Q] Display killing battery life

Hey all,
Quick question - for some reason I have really dodgy battery life in any of the most recent Android builds. This includes the Sense HD and the SuperRAM builds, with both recent MDJ & Hastarain Kernels.
If I leave the device in my pocket for a couple of hours, in standby, the "Battery Use" claims the Display is the primary cause for my battery use.
Just looking at it now, Android System and Android OS are both on 12% and the display is at 57%. That's after the display being mostly off......
I've tried three ROMS, including VBN's Android build, an official 1.66 HTC build and an official 3.14 HTC build. Furthermore, I've tried the 2.15.50.14 and 2.10.50.28_2 Radio's, both recommended for good battery life.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jon
I am wondering the same thing. I am running darkstone hd2 froyo v3 with hastarins 8.5.1 oldcam kernel, everything runs great but it says display is killing my battery. If there is anything I can do about this I would really like to know.

Phew, it's not just me then! If I could be bothered I'd dig up an old sense build with and old kernel and see what happened. However I can't remember which one worked best as I change my ROM on what feels like a daily basis!
I have been using this as my daily build but I really wish there was something I could do about the battery drain. If it is something about the phone that I can't change or if a different kernel or something would help, I wish I knew. Any help would be appreciated.

it's not just you indeed, it's everyone there's at least two threads already about this.
Well, I dont really think its killing my battery life, however i did notice that its lower than when running winmo, I checked the settings and it says display is using 60% of power, I didnt really think anything of it as i guessed the display is easily the thing that requires the most power. So perhaps I have this problem too? I dont really know
Winmo I would get a day, perhaps a day and a half if i was lucky, android i get a day.

That's the thing you see, if the display is off for 2 hours, on for say 3-4 mins while I check my e-mail, it's still at a really high figure. Yes the display causes battery drain, but no where near that much.
I wonder if it's purely a kernel thing??
I only get 5% on my display battery drain.

I've noticed it depends what Android rom your using. The issue for me is either the Android System OS is using 60% & over or the display is using 60% and over. Either way the display or the system is the battery eater in my case lol.

What eating mine is cell standby and wifi, both 35-40% while android system is only 20% and display is 5%.
Sent from my HD2 Droid using XDA App
My display always takes up more than 60% of the power usage, but I have had builds where it's reported very low, I don't pay much attention to that anymore, they're probably not that accurate.
I did ran a quick test the other day of battery usage in winmo vs android. In standby both android and winmo were about 3-6ma. On the dimmest setting with no app running, winmo used 78ma, and android used 95ma, so it's a little higher, but not extreme.
I'm running at a crazy 67%...
For the heck of it, turned off all radio, left thephone @ 70%. Came back 1 hour later, tells me this percentage and the phone is at 63%...
Weather it's the Cell Standby, Display, Wifi or the Android OS, something is always taking power. If your phone drains completely in an hour or a day, the battery usage is just telling you what is drawing the most power percentage wise. 3mA or 300mA, it accounts for 100% of what's being used, screen off or not.
My android os only uses like 5% maximum, display is usually 60 though

Nand builts battery drainage!

Hey guys.. I'm using Cotullas stock Desire HD nand rom... My battery last about a day with a few calls/sms...(Today i woke up and my phone was dead)

[Q] Battery drain

I recently monitor my battery drain on MDJ Revolution HD 2.2 and want to check with you guys if they seems ok to you?
When phone has no applications running in background, freshly after boot it uses 3-5mA with peaks from time to time up to 150mA, this means that it consumes around 1% of battery per hour.
When phone has few applications running in background (more real scenario) it uses 5-7mA with peaks up to 250mA, this means it starts to consume around 2% of battery per hour.
I have never measured those values under WM but I can recall that phone used 5% over night (7hrs), it is less then NAND build I’m currently using.
Is this normal for Android to consume more power then WM?
Will battery format and delete of batterstat.bin help? If yes, can some help me with finding it? I am using Astro File Manager but if I go to folder /data/ it says it is empty, do I need to delete the file using terminal?
Thanks
I can agree with your findings: my drainage also seems to be like yours. But there's one strange thing I can't follow. After receiving a call or calling, my drainage increases from 3-5mA up to ~60mA in standby?! Does anyone know a solution therefor? I've already compared the processes running before and after calling and couldn't find any irregularities...

i have this problem on MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 1.8, too.
on older builds i had it, too.
tested a few things, but nothing worked for me.
as said above the drainage after calls is fixed in every new nand build. so end of thread i would say
I was on MDJ Revolution HD and haven’t got any issues with battery drain after calls.
Now moved to MDJ Super Light 1.0 which has lower battery drain then HD, around 3mA in standby almost all the time, regardless any applications running in background.
That is not bad but still higher than WM roms

With Clean Desire v.0.3.1 I have horrible battery life. It's like stuck at the 60mA, think it's that call bug or something similar. If you study usage history, cell standy is consuming like 33% of the battery, and phone inactive 32%, the display is at 2%
There is something rotten in the kernel. Turning of GPS, Wifi hell, what ever, does nothing to improve it.

i only know that the spike of 60ma after calls had been fixed. i didnt noticed the unread notification spike (cauze I have my phone on me 24/7) so i will read the notification within 3mins orso. so i have no issue with that.
but the battery drain is really good it this build. for me personal, no errors at all. only the unlockscreen sometimes freezes but then u wait 3 secs and its good again. but every hd2 is slightly different from eachother so you might have an other experience.

but the battery drain is really good it this build. for me personal, no errors at all. only the unlockscreen sometimes freezes but then u wait 3 secs and its good again. but every hd2 is slightly different from eachother so you might have an other experience.
:3 but ill still recommend the prj clean rom

It's a great rom, it's DFT without the bloatware and I think purely Stock Roms are the best, unfortunately...I get the 60mA bug and it drives me crazy lol. I'm a extremely heavy user and the extended battery drain makes my days that much shorter =P

Battery optimizing [MIUI]

Oct 26 2011
ROM: MIUI 1.10.21
Kernal: [email protected] (oct 25th 2011)
902max 122min DARKSIDE
radio stock panache
been connected to wifi this whole time
and I got 84% @ 3 hours 46min. I expected 5hrs.
Im tryin to find out what the hell is draining my battery:
Watchdog app? yahoo messenger? rogue apps? (check out pics below!)
Does anybody have a suggestion for looking for the rogue apps besides watchdog lite? or is that the best one.
Any suggestion for tweaking settings? Ive included pics of whats running

1. looks normal, cell standby is usually the highest on MIUI. how long was your display on?
2. your OC settings look a little high for everyday use. I would try to OC lower and use the superbad governor. my settings are 1017/122 superbad and everything runs smoothly
3. looks like messaging and settings are taking up some memory, try killing those with the task killer. hold down the home button and a window will pop up, on the bottom there is "task killer"
4. looks normal with your OC settings
*edit* Battery Calibration app from the market also works really well, give it a shot. charge your phone til its 100%, and leave it plugged into the charger. run the app, calibrate your battery, then unplug and youre done
Thanks! Ill definitely make those adjustments and post results in a similar time frame. I didnt know I had a built in task killer ... dam i just freed 142MB! woohoo!
oh and what the heck is this? (in pic)

wow lol Ive never seen that before probably just give it a few days for your battery to even things out and settle in. it said your battery was in use for 3 seconds so just wait
LOL battery consumed 15% in half the time than previous. I DL'd battery calibrator, lowered setcpu to 1.2ghz w/onDemand. I wonder what is involved with android systems.

if you tap on "Android System" itll show a list of all the apps and things associated, from there you can pinpoint on what is using up your battery and just kill that app. I also noticed that youre on MIUI and you have a screenshot app...you know that function is already built into MIUI, just hold volume down then tap the menu button. theres a list of all kinds of neat little button quirks in the OP of the thread

Dammit man definitely "beats" makin funnny shakin gestures ... thanks again.
Well, here is my 2 cents.
Keep i'm mind that I had pandora running continuously for almost 5 hours. I unplugged my phone at 11 am. It has been running for almost 13.hours..
I have noticed that if my phone is hooked to a wifi signal, the battery last easy 3 times more.
3 days ago I had it running for 14.hours and it was still at 74%, of course, very little use, since I was a working all day
Second image you can see that I have been keeping the screen on for 3 hours

Thanks guys ...
So today I jus setcpu!
Here is the adjustment and activities I did today in regards to battery usage:
Set CPU @ 1.1ghz smartass (same performance)
unplugged for 5hrs
4hrs using data: yahoo messenger, internet browse, gtalk
used ubermusic in traffic (bumpin "ni**as in paris" on repeat LOL)
1hr on wifi (unless wifi was automatically turned on at the mall)
no calls (TY columbus day)
Tried to take a pic at 85% to keep it consistant as the first pic. LOL
Ill be traveling this weekend so im gonna put the GPS to work.
I used GPS the other day @ 1.6ghz and the latency was so minimal
with reroutes being spoken after maybe 200-500 ft of a turn not taken.

O use MIUI.us .
I'm going to post you the progress during the day today.
I'm unplugged the phone at 9 am, right now is 11:22pm and I still have 61%
As you can see I have been all day hooked to a wifi. If i'm not in a wifi, I would be at 20% I think
Btw, my display says 48 min , so you can see that I didn't use my phone that much, I have been.working all day

As general information, what I did was:
Wipe everything
Install ROM
Factory reset
Install my basic apps
Drain the battery to zero
Charge it all the way to 100%
Calibrate it with the app on the market
let the battery die again til zero
Charge it again til 100%
After the second day, it was going.better
Fyi, if I am constantly on non wifi networks, it goes down faster.
And i'm using panache radio
Hope it works for you

The person before you recommended that tactic ... and I have done so to help with the result ive got.
Here is my next hurdle:
CELL STANDBY
I believe CM7 or RoyalGinger had an option to manipulate cell standby while on wifi networks. Since im not using MIUI ill be researching this to get rid of this issue.
Thanks to the replies and xda this is the longest ive had my phone unplugged @
21 hrs (i had to plug my phone via usb for 2min to get something from my SD card cause I was impatient to figure out how to send it wirelessly, so no screenshot)

to help with the Cell Standby, while connected to wifi, set your mobile network to 2G/GSM only in the mobile network settings. prevents your phone from trying to connect to 3G/4G which saves battery as well

no problem bro. yep, running TDJ's Darkside Runny v1.5.1 and its the best Sense build Ive ever flashed. along with the blissmod and quicklaunch widget, its just bad ass. I was a religious MIUI user, but this rom just drew me in. of course the battery life is shorter on Sense builds due to the UI and all the eye candy and bloat, but after 19+ hours average on a full charge, Im not complaining one bit
Do you get commission selling sense roms ? LOL dammit MAN!
i would switch up if i could get 19hrs on sense 3.5. I like its UI interaction (ie text message has address and I can highlight and go straight to navigation)
My issue aside from battery is the widgets not loading correctly on sense 3.5. Do you get that?
With all that eye candy, bloat, etc What do you run your processor at? is it still 1012max superbad?

nah, never had any problems with the widgets. everything works for me as it should. yeah Im still running 1017/122 superbad on Sense as well, no problems at all and everything is still smooth. I dont play games on my phaone, so I mainly browse the net, text, call, listen to music, etc...sync only when needed and OC when needed also.

http://youtu.be/ionWqDJobVM
After 26 hours. The display says 2 hours and 45 min. Pretty much all the time on wifi.
In the next days I will try the new battery that I bought, it.us a 1700 capacity.
Let's see how it goes . And tomorrow I will usable the wifi , you are going to see the big difference
