[Q] Battery drain - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I recently monitor my battery drain on MDJ Revolution HD 2.2 and want to check with you guys if they seems ok to you?
When phone has no applications running in background, freshly after boot it uses 3-5mA with peaks from time to time up to 150mA, this means that it consumes around 1% of battery per hour.
When phone has few applications running in background (more real scenario) it uses 5-7mA with peaks up to 250mA, this means it starts to consume around 2% of battery per hour.
I have never measured those values under WM but I can recall that phone used 5% over night (7hrs), it is less then NAND build I’m currently using.
Is this normal for Android to consume more power then WM?
Will battery format and delete of batterstat.bin help? If yes, can some help me with finding it? I am using Astro File Manager but if I go to folder /data/ it says it is empty, do I need to delete the file using terminal?
Thanks

I can agree with your findings: my drainage also seems to be like yours. But there's one strange thing I can't follow. After receiving a call or calling, my drainage increases from 3-5mA up to ~60mA in standby?! Does anyone know a solution therefor? I've already compared the processes running before and after calling and couldn't find any irregularities...

right. after calling battery drainage rises from 3-5 mA to 60-70mA and stays at this level.

i have this problem on MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 1.8, too.
on older builds i had it, too.
tested a few things, but nothing worked for me.

as said above the drainage after calls is fixed in every new nand build. so end of thread i would say

I was on MDJ Revolution HD and haven’t got any issues with battery drain after calls.
Now moved to MDJ Super Light 1.0 which has lower battery drain then HD, around 3mA in standby almost all the time, regardless any applications running in background.
That is not bad but still higher than WM roms

As i said in my post. I have this problem with newest mdj build, too. So, for me this thread could be usefull

ive read that Android as an OS aint as power friendly as others. My friends Desire HD only just about lasts him a day on average use. My battery lasts just as long as his does and his is a native Android phone so im pretty, happy although it did last longer in Winmo.

now i changed to darkstone superRAM sense v0.1 and do not have anymore problems with higher battery drainage after calling - continuos at 3-5mA. perfect! really seems to depend on kernel...

Oke, ill take it back , most new build have fixed the problem. Try the Rom I'm using, it has this problem fixed. And the Rom is 90% stock desire. I highly recommend it. Also, maybe you don't have the correct radio? But then again I'm not a pro just a guy who likes to read forums :3

With Clean Desire v.0.3.1 I have horrible battery life. It's like stuck at the 60mA, think it's that call bug or something similar. If you study usage history, cell standy is consuming like 33% of the battery, and phone inactive 32%, the display is at 2%
There is something rotten in the kernel. Turning of GPS, Wifi hell, what ever, does nothing to improve it.

Can you confirm that there's no notification bug on v0.2? I switched from DFT because PRJ supposedly had it fixed but I'm using v0.3.1 and I still have the same thing, if a notification remains Unread it drains 60mA until it's Read --- is this not the case for v0.2?

i only know that the spike of 60ma after calls had been fixed. i didnt noticed the unread notification spike (cauze I have my phone on me 24/7) so i will read the notification within 3mins orso. so i have no issue with that.
but the battery drain is really good it this build. for me personal, no errors at all. only the unlockscreen sometimes freezes but then u wait 3 secs and its good again. but every hd2 is slightly different from eachother so you might have an other experience.
:3 but ill still recommend the prj clean rom

It's a great rom, it's DFT without the bloatware and I think purely Stock Roms are the best, unfortunately...I get the 60mA bug and it drives me crazy lol. I'm a extremely heavy user and the extended battery drain makes my days that much shorter =P

No, stock. Why you ask?
i read somewhere that Stock and Cyanogen's ROM have display consuming a lot of battery... its fixed on enomther's and modaco's desire port...
On Cyanogen and Stock, Display consumes ~60% battery while on Enomther's and MoDaCo's desire port, display consumes 15~20% battery...

Thats what I herd too..thats why I'm also calling google a lier about saying this thing lasts 20hours with audio playback.
I'm curious, do they see a big improvement in battery when the display using 15-20% battery or its just numbers that were out a place to begin with?
I have identical figures. That combined with picking the N1 from a list says to me that these are just database figures rather than real world ones for your handset.
Root your phone and then install cyanogenmod and one of the under volted kernels. I usually get 24 - 30 hours battery life.
I just ran a test. I left the mp3 player on all night turn all the way on repeat. SO far after 8hrs of playing I was at 52%. If I'm correct, I just might be able to hit 18hrs...MMMM

Ok after 100% charge..the app is telling me that my phone will last 10hr:48min with moderate use....anyone thinking that the F on my P/N might mean battery sucker..
i have the exact same numbers as you. if you choose other instead of the phone type it asks you to enter your battery's info so it sounds like it only goes by the type of battery anyway. Not actual usage specific to your phone
My phone ends in an F as well. My battery life SUCKS right now. I have tried everything. The weird thing is it was good until I rooted my phone and applied Cyanogen rom. I've tried .2 and .3 for the Cyan rom's, all with bad battery life. I've tried wiping batterystats, fulling draining battery then recharging, task killer to wipe anything in the background, I even have a 2nd battery. No luck. I've also tried the undervolted kernal, but I didn't really notice a difference with it. (Only tried it for about a day so)
Bottom line though, something is going on. Something (I suspect with Cyan's roms) is killing battery life for some of us. I just wish I could figure out what it is.

Any chance you're using Weatherbug or Weatherbug elite (based on your SS)? After installing weatherbug and using the widget I got absolutely ABYSMAL battery life. I've purchased several other weather widgets and none had the effect that Weatherbug did for some reason. I removed it and battery life is back to normal again (moderate use and plenty of battery at the end of the day).

How long your battery lasts definitely depends on the apps youre using, I use my phone a lot, probably more than the average user, although i dont make many calls. My phone will easily last from when I leave my house around 530am till 11pm or so when I go to bed. I do use a task manager to kill stuff I dont need running every once in a while, I think it really just depends on how you use it. I use it for a lot of texting, surfing and news, and Pandora at work. I use wifi when im at home although ive never noticed it eating my battery. Yesterday I was playing Pandora over bluetooth on 3G for a little over 3 hours and it only took 5% of my battery. Im on Cyanogen 5.0.5.3, if that matters. With all that said I rarely go all day without charging it, I usually plug it in a bit at work and plug it in when I get home, but if I dont for whatever reason it easily lasts my whole day.

[Discussion] Talking about battery life with Android

Hi All,
I've test all of Android builds with lastest kernels but Android on hd2 still eats battery like a T-Rex
My phone survival time not longer than 6 hours on GPRS network.
How about yours?
Come on man, I'm fairly new here but I'm comfortable enough to say... You have to have seen that there are several threads not only on this same topic, but even on how to improve your battery life with Android.
I've try all of these tips not work for me How is yours?
Make sure to turn down the brightness of your screen. There is a thread not far from this one titled "how to improve battery life on Android HD2." Read that. Also put your phone on a charger any time you're near one: desk, car, couch, etc. Disable some of the always on widgets, maybe don't sync social networks or minimize the frequency they sync... the list could go on.
The fact of the matter is these are not final builds and are running from the SD card. A super long battery life isn't to be expected. Follow some if the steps above, read the how-to thread, and give it a shot.
Don't forget to thank the devs who put this together.

With SetCPU running and set up properly, after a day of normal use (around 16 hours) on Shub's Cyanogen's 1.1 build I have around 15% battery left. So clearly you have something setup wrong to be only getting 6 hours. My battery life is now no worse than it was on Windows Mobile.
yeah i get over 20 hours
I got 20 hours with heavyish use for 10 hours, and 10 hours no use.
Which is about the same as i'd get with just winmo.
I could easily use this build for my day to day phone

If I'm using the phone heavily, 12-15 hours. I have no idea how much idle time I would get as my phone is rarely idle as I use it for work constantly... And this is without using SetCPU or any of the battery life tips/tricks honestly. Keep in mind I use the T-Mobile "extended battery" case which recharges my battery with the flip of a switch on my case but I don't ever let it get below 20%.
Hmm I see. I'm starting to thing my battery problem doesn't about Android Builds maybe my SD cards needs a lot of power to work?? What is your android setup? Which build which zimage?

Edit: I forgot he asked me which build and zImage as well.
MattC Froyo RC 1.4, 08/03 zImage.
battery "life" is not the main issue here.
in my opinion, the main issue is power management. that causes short battery life combined with high battery temperature.
can the devs say the reason(s) why is the power management that bad? that is the main issue with android builds right now, once it's solved, android can be a true main OS for everyday use.

just checked and there's none for Aug5?
Other than using the latest zimage and SetCPU to force autoscaling CPU and Conservative CPU Governor, I've noticed Darkstone's vanilla froyo v1 build gives pretty good battery life (vs say, the CM RC1 build) by default.
I've also noticed that I get great standby battery consumption if I ensure that S2U2 is running in the WM background (as iLock2.exe) with the setting "Don't Suspend Power" unchecked in S2U2 options before booting into Android.
On a 3G network with a idle data connection, the (standard HTC) battery only drops 10% for a 10-11 hour standby time.

I managed to get to 8.5% per hour drain with normal use.
Of course, I never got better than that with WM anyways...
lol i get about 31 to32 hrs (1hrs mp3 and 30min internet) with light use
I must admit my android battery issues were solved with setcpu and screen brightness tweak.
Only funny thing is that with my setcpu profiles identical between Mattc-froyo and Shub-cyanogen, there is a short delay in the latter's response to a key press once screen is off and device locked. No delay on Mattc.....

Batter Life!!!!!!!!!!

Okay I am now running an Energy Rom, still every build that I have tried, the battery drains so fast!! It is almost unbelievable. I can not get a days worth out of this thing, I have turned off background data, and everything, and it still the battery drains like crazy! What is the point in having Android on this nice phone, when the batter drains too fast, you can barely use the phone? I have tried builds that include Kernel 8.5.1, still battery drains.
Download current widget to see your mA, I thinks that is battery voltage...what radio are you using and WM rom?
With chucky lite, radio 2.12 and froyohd2, if I don't play angry birds my battery still last about all day... And around 7mA in stand by.
I like the Energy Rom, can you give me a link to the FroyoHD2? Also I heard there was a Froyo with no sense ui, but I can not find it. My Radio is working just fine, I have 2.12.50
The answer to this question is all over these forums. 90% chances are the issues are between the 4.2" Screen and You.
With the right settings/configurations, you can get pretty damn good batt life.

[Q] Display killing battery life

Hey all,
Quick question - for some reason I have really dodgy battery life in any of the most recent Android builds. This includes the Sense HD and the SuperRAM builds, with both recent MDJ & Hastarain Kernels.
If I leave the device in my pocket for a couple of hours, in standby, the "Battery Use" claims the Display is the primary cause for my battery use.
Just looking at it now, Android System and Android OS are both on 12% and the display is at 57%. That's after the display being mostly off......
I've tried three ROMS, including VBN's Android build, an official 1.66 HTC build and an official 3.14 HTC build. Furthermore, I've tried the 2.15.50.14 and 2.10.50.28_2 Radio's, both recommended for good battery life.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jon

Phew, it's not just me then! If I could be bothered I'd dig up an old sense build with and old kernel and see what happened. However I can't remember which one worked best as I change my ROM on what feels like a daily basis!
I have been using this as my daily build but I really wish there was something I could do about the battery drain. If it is something about the phone that I can't change or if a different kernel or something would help, I wish I knew. Any help would be appreciated.

it's not just you indeed, it's everyone there's at least two threads already about this.
Well, I dont really think its killing my battery life, however i did notice that its lower than when running winmo, I checked the settings and it says display is using 60% of power, I didnt really think anything of it as i guessed the display is easily the thing that requires the most power. So perhaps I have this problem too? I dont really know
Winmo I would get a day, perhaps a day and a half if i was lucky, android i get a day.

That's the thing you see, if the display is off for 2 hours, on for say 3-4 mins while I check my e-mail, it's still at a really high figure. Yes the display causes battery drain, but no where near that much.
I wonder if it's purely a kernel thing??
I only get 5% on my display battery drain.

I've noticed it depends what Android rom your using. The issue for me is either the Android System OS is using 60% & over or the display is using 60% and over. Either way the display or the system is the battery eater in my case lol.

What eating mine is cell standby and wifi, both 35-40% while android system is only 20% and display is 5%.
Sent from my HD2 Droid using XDA App
My display always takes up more than 60% of the power usage, but I have had builds where it's reported very low, I don't pay much attention to that anymore, they're probably not that accurate.
I did ran a quick test the other day of battery usage in winmo vs android. In standby both android and winmo were about 3-6ma. On the dimmest setting with no app running, winmo used 78ma, and android used 95ma, so it's a little higher, but not extreme.
I'm running at a crazy 67%...
For the heck of it, turned off all radio, left thephone @ 70%. Came back 1 hour later, tells me this percentage and the phone is at 63%...
Weather it's the Cell Standby, Display, Wifi or the Android OS, something is always taking power. If your phone drains completely in an hour or a day, the battery usage is just telling you what is drawing the most power percentage wise. 3mA or 300mA, it accounts for 100% of what's being used, screen off or not.
My android os only uses like 5% maximum, display is usually 60 though

Hey guys.. I'm using Cotullas stock Desire HD nand rom... My battery last about a day with a few calls/sms...(Today i woke up and my phone was dead)
With SD card builts i have 2-3 days battery life with only a few calls/sms! Is there any other new NAND built that battery drainage is ok?
Since I've installed a NAND Android build, my phone lasts much longer than with SD card builds.

LOL! WTF? Maybe because you have a T-Mous or something?
What built do you have?????
I'm with Cotullas stock Desire HD too. And now, sometime I see 3ma in standby.
Till now I've never see less then 4ma. So, for me, it`s better with nand Android
I have autosync active... all the time.(weather, email, facebook...)
You can check programs... some program may be is draining a lot of power.
Did you test with clean ROM, without any installed programs?

there is a Desire HD rom, not made by cotulla, but Gauner, in the Android development section.
Guys, which software do you use to to check battery drain - I cannot see where the mA statistics are reported, only what is using my battery.... Thank you

which was ur sd build?i got just 4hr aftrr wake up.it is dead.
I've been going for 27hrs now on the same battery with over 40% still left! I have only made 1 call, but used it lots on wifi and SMS.
Awesome, the battery usage i'd say.
Is your wifi on ? i have a normal HD2 (Not Tmouse) and i had massive batt drain above 50mah sleep until i turned wifi completely off.
now i get 2-5mah sleep.
I have wifi on. Its in 3g in standby mode. Have u turned off wifi location setting. That helped alot in all builds.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

are you using task killer? setcpu?
how are you getting battery life like that!!!??? lol
Everyone got 60-70ma in standby after making a call with cotullas build.
Change the kernel to this one and it's fine after that
