I heave a really big problem with this bull***t. It drives me crazy!
With the ne HTC Sense you have "Reflow Text" in every broswer.
So if you zoom (doesn't matter if double tab or pinch) the browser switch to another part of the page. It is just impossible to zoom to a place you want. Sometimes it just kicks it to the left end of the page!
And I can't turn it off! So why HTC?? Why I can't turn it off?
I hope there is or there will be a solution for this
OP is talking about this issue:

Apparently, there is a fix for the Desire, but I'm not certain if it applies for Desire HD. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786290
Android Version: 2.2
Build Number: 1.32.405.3
Browser Version: 3.1
Not sure if it could work? Do I lose warranty with this?

I love the way the browser reflows the text. Best reflow of all the browsers I used on both the windows mobile (wp7, wm6.x) and the android platform.
But maybe it comes with some costs... Fortunately, I don't need a exact zoom like you do.

Not at all. Just try.
Better idea: "about:debug" -> Menu -> Settings -> GEP Zoom an ->
Doubletab: relfow
Pinch-zoom: no reflow
Thank god!

Write about:debug your address bar and press enter key. After that you'r going to debug mode of browser then tap menu>settings> and go down there is Enable GEP Zoom. Enable that.
I cant agree more, the htc browser zooming is ****, can't really see why anyone would like it better than original ASOP zooming. There are no real benefits to this text reflow thingey when you pinch zoom.
about:debug works great though

I'm very pleased with my HD2 overall, but there's one area where it comes up short in comparison to the iPhone imo: in the default zoomed out browser page view, if you click on a link (which is small, but it does briefly change colour so you know the press has registered), nothing happens - I have to zoom in (with a pinch or double press) before it will work. This is the case in both Opera and IE.
Is there by any chance a config hack to sort this? I'm new to Windows Mobile, perhaps it's a known weakness? Because the link does highlight it makes me think this is more of a software issue than a hardware one, so ought to be fixable/hackable?
Thanks,
Andy

when i go to google.nl and its zoomed out, i click on the right upper side to log in/sign in, so for me this aint no issue.
Just one bump in case anybody else has any thoughts (I appreciate that this isn't an issue for the poster above, but it is for me ).
You can search the forum for a solution (it was posted dozens of times across the place). You'll need to change zoom settings to achieve what you want.
Just note that you'll lose something as well. The current behavior allows you to activate onHover events (stuff that websites do when you move your mouse over an element). With default settings you get popups/menus activated without firing the link action (an option missing in the iPhone browser).
Yes, I'm having the same problem from time to time. Sometimes I can hit tiny targets and sometimes I have to zoom right in to hit a link. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to the capacitive screen.

Thanks, I found the registry setting (software,opera,info,az_overview_threshold), reduced it to 32 and haven't noticed any obvious side effects yet. This makes a big difference for me, especially when I set the minimum font size to medium in the menu settings.

I'm a little confused by this. Do you mean Opera 10? I only ask because the default Opera (9.7) that comes installed on the device is always in full screen, except when you use the menus.
same for opera 10.. always in fullscreen except when using the menus
maby i said it wrong...with fullscreen i ment viewing the whole page. only able to scroll down, not sideways.
Opera always goes to fullscreen mode automatically.
And actually it goes to REAL fullscreen, not like on the iPhone where you still have that bar on the bottom taking away screen real estate (that's already very limited on the iPhone anyway, with that low resolution and smaller screen).
Don't know where you found that information that Opera would not do this, but it's wrong.
You can turn that off in the settings, however.
EDIT:

Ah yes, now I understand what you mean. Yes, you can do that also, by setting the "virtual screen width" higher.
if it still wont work, type about:config in your browser
and then go to user prefs and see if there are some options permanently activatet wich do not allow the browser to go into fullscreen!
This is what you're searching for:
- type about:config
- click on 'adaptive zoom settings'
- set 'virtual screen width' to 1000 (or something great enough for all the pages you visit)
- click 'save' and restart Opera
Thanks for the question, I'll include this in my next ROM
I like not having to scroll sideways, but was too lazy to change it
yeah thats it! i was to lazy to get my phone to look it up^^

Hi everyone,
i think thread title says it all...
I already hated this stupid mobile view of websites in my Android smartphone.
Now it sucks even more on my tablet. i want to see webpages in desktop view style. I have found no way to change that in the stock browser.
Only in the Dolphin HD browser I an choose wether I want mobile or desktop views of website. And it even works. But actually I would prefer the stock browser.
Thank you.

Try This:
1. Open the Android Honeycomb browser on your tablet.
2. In the address bar, type: about:debug and press enter (it will appear that nothing changed).
3. Now open the browser's settings by tapping the icon in the very top-right corner of your screen (it looks like four horizontal lines) and selecting "Settings" from the drop-down menu that appears.
4. On the left side of the screen, tap the section labeled "Debug."
5. On the right side of the screen, tap the item labeled "UAString," then select "Desktop."
6. Press the back button (in the very bottom-left corner of your screen) to exit the browser's settings.
7. In the browser's address bar, type: about:debug once more; this will disable debugging mode and return the browser to its normal state.
That should make it load the "desktop" versions of websites for you!
any chance of getting this change to stick? It seems that I have to change this every time I start the browser.

You change this once and then the change wil persist
only sticks until you reboot, kind of annoying wish someone could write a script or something to automate this.
Sorry but either will lose setting periodically for no apparent reason. Absolutely needs to be automated.
i would love this too..
SGS2 is a fantastic phone but one of the most annoying things I find is when you zoom in on the browser, the webpage doesn't seem to do the screen auto-fit.
Double tapping it doesn't seem to do the trick either where this feature is available to the former SGS1.
I have already ticked the box for Auto-fit in the settings menu to no avail. I use browser zooming all the time and it's frustrating you have to scroll from left to right and vice versa to read for every single line. It's doing my head-in!! What else can I do to make this work?
Thanks in advance.
You need to totally zoomed out of the page then double tap and the text will be rearranged.
If you are already zoomed in, double tap once will do a zoom out, do that one more time to auto-fit the text.

This is another reason why not to use the stock SGS2 browser (the other being that it brings the battery to its knees).
Try Menu > More > Settings, uncheck "Open pages in overview", and check "Auto-fit pages".

Double tapping only switches between overview and default zoom level - both of them do allow auto-fit. However, if you zoom in at a level greater than the default zoomed-in level, it certainly does not perform the auto-fit again as it should be and in this case double tapping would only take it back to overview level. I regularly need to zoom in more than the default zoom level. It's so annoying!! Surely, I'm not the only person experiencing this issue.
Opera Mobile has it.
There's already a thread on this topic about 500 pages long titled text reflow. Perhaps all your answers are contained there.

The clue to the referenced thread is in the post above yours, where he actually gives you the title of said thread. If you then do a search with that same title.........

I did another test on the Samsung infuse today and text reflow definitely works. Now we just need to figure out why Samsung would leave it out of their flagship phone.
Dumbass browser move by Samsung, as well as not having settings for desktop displays.
'Best browser' in the industry: NOT because they don't enable these key features. Idiotic.
Regarding zoom you have to pinch zoom to required level and rotate the phone it auto fits your page in whatever zoom level.you should keep auto rotation on.

So I have flashed the italian version of official ICS rom.
I was wondering is the stock browser can be modded to allow more tabs? and set to always request desktop site?
I have found a few mods but they are for phone ICS, not sure if they would work on tablet ICS.
any suggestions?
Edit : i flashed the deodexed, zipaligned stock 4.0.4 and modified the SecBrowser.apk to enable a maximum of 99 tabs, and some faster animations. i have attached the modified apk here for those who need it. note: only works on deodexed stock 4.0.4

one of the very first things I did:
RE "always request desktop site"
type about:debug in the broswer's address bar
go to the browser's settings
go to the "advanced" (IIRC) tab or something like that
find the voice "UAstring" (IIRC) or something like that to "desktop"
type again about:debug in the broswer's address bar
this setting stays set even after rebooting (which was not always the case in the past)
don't know where/how to change the "8 tabs max" settings but would like to!

I was referring to the stock browser. And since I don't have Chrome (a browser which doesn't reflow zoomed in text, like the stock does, is useless to me) I have no idea if it works with Chrome too, sorry.

No worries and thanks for the info!
When you say doesn't reflow zoomed in text, do you mean the fact that Chrome doesn't properly fit a page on screen when you change pages?
I have noticed that on Chrome every time I go to a new page it is zoomed in and I have to either scroll to see all text or double tap screen to get it to fit. Very annoying and I don't know if that is just a setting or a fact of life.

yep, double tapping only zooms out while in the stock browser it reflows (reformats) the text leaving the zoom level you set and making the page readable without scrolling (make sure to also check this in the settings).
frankly this is one of the most basic functions of a browser and IDK how people can live without it. until Chrome gets this elementary feature it's just worthless crap, to me.
BTW, no settings issue, it's "a fact of life" with Chrome. Can't believe so many people rave about it......
oh and, just checked and the way to change the user agent that I wrote in my earlier reply doesn't work with Chrome.
Dolphin browser + desktop toggle is what you need. I have given up on stock browsers on all my devices. Dolphin is miles ahead.

I'm not familiar with compiling/decompiling, can anybody do the modification on the browser.apk for the official ICS rom?
edit: okay, tried modifying the apk using APKTools, deleted the SecBrowser.apk and .odex, replacing them with modified one, but ended up having a missing internet icon. Looks like it is not possible to modify apk in non-deodexed stock rom.
