Why do times change, etc. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi guys,
I was wondering, whenever you run Android, does anything in the Windows OS change?
I only ask because I've noticed that I actually lose my time-settings, and my internet connection settings. For example, after running android, I couldn't send MMS-es, but I could use the internet. I had to run the automatic configurator again, and to get the appropriate carrier time again.
My e-mail settings were also gone. I had to do this again.
Anyone know why this happens? Or is it because these information is stored in the SD card and the SD card is changed somehow? Hmm.

I'm sorry that I cannot give You any solution, but I can confirm that it happens.
time change, corrupted data settings, g-alarm not triggering on time... You name it.
however, after some time with darkstone froyo 3.2 and hastarin 7.6 previously, now 7.7 I cannot see problems anymore. maybe it's just couple of first boots to android?
... anyway, I am using android 98% of time now, so I'm not bothered.

Normaly the android "automatic clock adjust" is on. change it in the clock settings to off and the clock in wm is ok

Pocket IE does not like to stay open in the background

I have been running 4.00.11 for quite sometime now the 2 main problems I have with this version is
1) If I'm using PIE & task switch or go to today or any other applications, when I try to come back to PIE it's been closed. I then have to re-open PIE & it loads my default page not where I was. It seems very tempermental in this version closing down whenever it is in the background, but not all the time. Very strange. Since I am using data each web page load this seems like a error that would benefit the service provider. Odd since I never had this problem in earlier versions (keep in mind all these versions are on the same build) Hmmmm?
2) If I reg hack to put my cookies, history, & temp internet files on SD & I get disconnected from the network it will, from that point forward start using main memory again. If I delete these files from main memory it then starts using SD card again which tells me the reg hack was never actually changed back to what it was before my edit. How strange is that? For some reason it just starts using RAM even though the registry is set to tell it to use SD. Go figure? Again not ever occurring in previous versions.
Has anyone else experienced this? Just curious.
I still think Ozone version was still the most stable minus the Alarms issue which still plagues many of the non-phone edition 2003 devices.
It would be nice to see a ROM version based on Ozone minus the alarms issue & the 2 battery icons w/the new version of WinModem coming from O2 included in the new O2-XDA2. I think this would be an ideal ROM. Just a blind item suggestion... and of course whatever other little programs can be fit 8)
Try freeing up more ram.
I find if I multitask too many the os will start closing them especially PIE and EzWap when you have
web pages open.
Oh yah cache for PIE dont work too well either it always reload from the net when I go back to previous pages. This is true for the deaktop IE so I dont know what the cache is suppose to do.
For EzWap it does reload from cache but maybe because I am usually surfing Wap pages.
Oh sorry I did not notice your saying that you are alright with earlier versions.
All I can say is its a mystery
Maybe we should start a poll to see how many successful wm2k3 upgraders.

Clock Issues

Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of trouble with my devices time keeper....
Ever since I changed the home tab clock, the regional settings don't seem to work. I like my clock to be in 24h format but all I get is bloody AM/PM!
I've tried to uninstall .cab and soft-reset back to original to no avail, and just wondered if anyone else had this problem or an idea of how to sort it?
Thanks in advance.
Time format...
What time format do you have set in your 'Regional Settings'? If they are set the way you want, but the time still displays in another format, the developer has coded the format within the application, so you won't be able to change it from the device settings
I have it on UK regional settings, when bought it was on US settings, but, having changed backwards and forwards it does'nt seem to like either.... I'll try with a few more regions and see what happens....
Sorted now.... for some reason it started to work when I changed the settings to another region, switched back to UK and all was fine

Wifi

I've installed the new rom upgrade and wifi seems to be on all the time, while before it was only on when i accessed the web browser, and when i updated weather etc...
how can i fix this ?
So you turn WiFi off in comm managre and it still comes on?
I use G-Profile to controll what accesses what and when.

I had that too at first - very frustrating. Eventually I went into Comm Manager and set Airplane Mode which turns everything off. Then just selected Phone Mode and the Wi-Fi didn't come on any more (unless I selected it myself). Seems OK now.
Solution
New ROM comes with the WLanOnDemand feature disabled. Here is the solution cab. Works perfect on my TD2.

thanks mehmetkoksal, i'll try it out
edit: it worked now i got a question. there's an option that terminates the connection of not use like after 1 minute, 5 minutes in default windows. How do you change this ? i changed it, but i can't find it again. because it';s set to 1 minute, and i'd like it to have it at 5 minutes
Use Adv.Conf.Tools
There could be several ways of doing it. But simply download Advanced Configuration Tool v.3.3 and change this number to whatever you want under the tab "Network". This program is also very useful for a number of handy settings.
thanks for the app, but it did it through the windows settings, and wouldn't like to install an extra app just for changing this value

[DEV] Experimenting with pppd options

I don't have data to spare to test things myself until next month, and have a fairly stable PPP setup anyway.
But I figured if someone wants to experiment the following might be worth a shot.
What I've done is attach a zip with 4 sample options files for pppd that attempt to address issues I've seen with pppd. Specifically the crash with memory issues due to compression, and pppd dying when disconnected and needing to be restarted (eg by LeTama's v0.3 wrapper). If you want to try these out I would suggest using them in conjunction with his wrapper as I'm unsure how other versions may work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824413
The 4 versions for testing are as follows:
option1
- Makes the buffer size used for compression as small as possible.
- Tries to make the connection persistant.
option2
- Disables compression.
- Tries to make the connection persistant.
option3
- Makes the buffer size used for compression as small as possible.
option4
- Disables compression.
To use them they will need to be copied to your /etc/ppp/ folder as "options" and you'll need to ensure it's readable.
If you don't know what I mean I suggest you don't bother trying this.
If you do know what you're doing then you can try experimenting with the different options and see if they make things better/worse.
option3 is probably the safest, option4 may be needed if things still crash due to memory issues with option3.
option1 would be the ideal, but I can't guarantee the persist option is possible.
If option1 or option3 prove to improve things and prevent the crash, then the values used could be slowly increased (to a max of 15) to see if crashes start happening again.
Anyway, just something else the more adventurous and tech savvy users out there with PPP issues can try.
Can I copy these over via ADB push while Android is running, or do I need to put them in the Android root folder so they'll get copied into place on reboot?
Well with Option 1 the data connections drops almost instantly, Option 2 is doing without drops for 10 min now, but it is too early to say if it's an improvement over the old options.
Does compression influence the connection speed? Option 2 works as fast as possible on HSDPA... Option 2 dropped after about 15 minutes when downloading from the market, but downloading from the market was much faster than before.
Should we be copying it as "options" with no file extension or "options.smd"?
Probably as options.smd, that's what I did and it seemed to have some effect...
Now testing option3, will mess with it for the rest of the day and see what happens. At first glance, it seems a bit slow, but that's anecdotal at best.

Seems like I drew my conclusion from Option 1 too early, after a reboot it works great, I have been downloading MDJ newest rom for 10 min now which resulted 20% of 170mb (from multiupload). No drops untill now, definitely a huge improvement over the old options.smd. Thanks alot Hastarin!
question when i get to the ppp file in i see options.smd and a options.smd1 do i just add this new option to it or delete the old ones and replace with this one?

I would backup your original files first, although the orig options.smd is probably blank anyhow.
Replace the options.smd with the renamed options from hastarin.
Hastarin, do you happen to know the default options when we were using the default "blank" options.smd? Does it use compression etc. Thanks for your efforts!

The wrapper supplies nodetach, debug and something I can't recall atm (should be in IRC logs).
Compression will be used by pppd by default but I couldn't find information on what size buffer it uses by default.
Google pppd man page for more information.
You are right about options.smd being the safest option. Using options file may affect other things that use pppd if there are any.

Option1 seems to be working fine for me right now. I will report more in a few hours while I'm out.
Hey just wanted to say that I am checking out these options also. So far using option1 and I haven't had any data drops or freezes. Haven't been able to test it extensively yet but will over the next few hours.
With option 1 can you make sure you can switch between WiFi and data and back again? And that you can turn mobile data off and on? And perhaps airplane mode and back to be thorough?
Thanks

It seems after some time options.smd gets reset to blank by itself? Anyone noticed?

I haven't rebooted yet, but mine is still there and not blank. I will try to toggle wifi etc next. Otherwise it's still rolling well, no disconnects yet or hangs.

I set mine to read only in case this actually happens lol.

Lucky.. I still can't get mine to last longer than 5 seconds.
Ok with option1 I started experiencing some data freeze again. It happened while downloading a large file and then again when I switched to wifi tethering. The freeze actually freezes my entire system and then my phone runs really really slow. It may be the build that I am using so I am going to try an older build that did not seem to have this problem. I will run option1 for a while again and then try the others.
Option 1 is no good - I think the persist option keeps 3g "connected" even though I'm getting timeouts, instead of dropping and reestablishing data connection.
Will test the other options once I upgrade to 0.4 ril wrapper and S4 mdeejay kernel.
EDIT: oh yeah, I noticed though the default options.smd is blank, when pppd is running it creates a options1.smd in /etc/ and it has the words "user dummy" in it?

hd2 broken?

Hi everyone,
i have a strange problem. My hd2 has a black screen very often. I use different navtivesd-roms and sd-roms. But since one month i can not switch it on after some hours. E.g every morning i can not wake it up (the button lights work when touching them). Also when using it, it happens, that it "goes off". No more music, no podcasts, no screen but the button-lights are on after pushing them. i have to take out the battery or push the reset button.
I used a lot of different roms, reformated the sd, repartitioned the sd, used different sd-cards, did not install software, did install extra software...
It seems, that in windows 6.5 it doesn't "go off" like in android.
Any ideas out there, what is wrong with my hd2 (i love it - and have no money for a new smartphone).
Thank you.
Heiko
Use LBE and Titanium. Try Typhoon or PA 1.6b on NAND.
Sounds like something is crashing it.
All of us have had to pull the battery out sometimes. Truthfully, I often keep the HD2 I'm using without a back at all until I head out the door. If I'm not experimenting, installing, flashing, etc. I do not experience the problem you are having and run crash-free on my current daily drivers of Typhoon or xylo's PA 1.6b.
I would go to applications-running services and see what's running.
I swear by an app called LBE (find the English translation apk here on XDA) that lets you control permissions and choose what apps can start at bootup and/or run in the background. Stop everything from running at bootup except what is needed. Use Titanium to freeze rarely-used apps until you use them. Uninstall any crap/ad/bloat.
I run all HD2s NAND. Try that too.
