Go grab it. Slide out the keyboard. Feel the firm, solid snap of solid engineering.
I have been using my G2 for three weeks and when I grabbed my G1 today I realized how much better that slide mechanism was.... although I admit it's a small price to pay for the other superior aspects of the G2... but a price nonetheless.

I never notice the hinge durability unless i'm holding the phone upside-down, something the normal user does not do.
(Grabs G1) I do feel that the mechanism is better. The only thing that is better is that the phone is thinner when the phone is open, which doesnt make a difference when the phone is not in your pocket.
The G1's slide mechanism was pure genious....except for the squeaking sound on the bottom half of the screen.
Did anyone else notice that the "enter" and "del" keys swapped places? I accidentally sent a "F**k you" message instead of deleting it lol.

My hinge is looser than when I bought the phone. I agree it doesn't interfere with use, but it is annoying. Even when my phone is closed it just has a little too much give and doesn't feel like a solid unit. I even put a rubber band around it temporarily, to see if it felt more secure... and it did.
When I slide it open its ok... still too loose for my liking.
I just hope the G3 gets it right. See you in 2012 I guess...

lmao! That's funny.
I look at my G1 and just see a ginormous (yes, that big) phone because I was using the Seido 2600 mAh battery. I do miss that strong resistance to opening, but I could not see giving up my G2.

Those keys should never be right next to each other. I accidentally send messages all the time.
I got my replacment G2 (new one) today and the whole hinge does feel better and solid but when I am typing upside down it will fall down. But when I close it and hold by the phone, the screen will drop a little but not as much as my previous one. It feels like over time, the hinge will get looser or feel looser which sucks.

Yes I hate tgat they feel swapped. And that the keyboard is offset to the right. But I still love the phone and its way better then the g1. And my hings are great so no worry 4 me

Even the so called "Great" G2 hinge phones pale in comparison to the G1 mechanism...
Using a G1 right now for a temporary phone, and while this thing is slow as F***, the keyboard is great.
I can't take the wiggling anymore.. I put a small black rubberband over the "T-Mobile" logo and put the gel case on the phone, essentially turning it into a thick Nexus One.
If I had known the keyboard mechanism would suck this bad I probably would have just gone without it, seeing as nobody seems to know how to make a good keyboard anymore.
It's a shame too, phone was close to perfect.
That is probably my only gripe about this phone. I love it and wouldn't change it, but I'm having more trouble typing with the physical keyboard than with the virtual keyboard.
The G1 keyboard is about as perfect a keyboard you're gonna get in my opinion, and the compact G2 keyboard, plus the swivel makes that belief further.
It's really not a big deal, though. With swipe, it's a breeze to type with the virtual keyboard. Maybe when I get used to the physical keyboard, I will only use for long messages.
Oh, I've sent ton of inadvertent texts thanks to this keyboard!

I send over 50 texts a day at least, I have had my G2 since it was available and my hinge is fine? I have friends who also are not having issues with theirs...

I text a lot on my bed... I hate how the screen just starts to flop down if you angle it too much. The G1's mechanism was genius and the keyboard was perfect. I'm just hoping I'll eventually get used to this keyboard was that I'd be able to type as fast as I did with my G1.
The DEL and the Enter key didn't really get swapped... more like the keyboard is just way too crampped up now. I often press the enter key by mistake too =\

Compared to the G1.. it's not. That's my point. It's usable, but not a good design because it's not solid enough. Even on the "good" ones. Mine was somewhat ok when I first got it.. but I text a lot and my hinge has gotten weaker and weaker... and I take good care of my stuff.
Still love my g1 and will treasure it always. At first use of the G2 the keyboard really felt too squashed but its not too bad now. Until I go back to the g1 and feel its lavish open fields of 5 rows.
As for the hinge.. I spit on the z hinge.
The thing I miss more about my G1 is the fact that I could slide the kb open with one hand. The G2 is impossible to do that with as there's no place to put a finger for leverage.
The wnter and delete keys also were not switched. It's that the G1 has 5 rows while the G2 has 4. The delete key is on row 3 on the G1 but row 4 on the G2. That's the issue lol.

yup
the mytouch and g2 have terrible sliding mechanisms
i dont understand why htc design degrades overtime as the hardware inside improves
if only they sold something like the old g1 with a snapdragon + processor, i would buy it in a heart beat

I can open the G2 perfectly fine with one hand. in multiple ways too.

Thanks for the video. I've been wondering if mine had the problem. While mine does open up when held upside down by the keyboard it doesn't ever close unless I close it. That would concern me.

Yea, **** that, that'd be crazy annoying.
Let's hope it's just an assembly line issue, and not the way it's supposed to be.
wow that looks defective, i get mine today, lets see if it has the problem
honestly, I think its just a non-issue and the way it was designed.
How often do you hold the phone, upsidedown, and only grabbing the keyboard side of the phone, if your in bed it doesn't take much to hold the screen and keyboard.
Mine opens up, but not as much as yours.
Like I said before in other threads. We know how a traditional slider should feel. This is a new technology so to speak and the first slider of its kind, so no one really knows exactly how it should feel.

I believe you are correct here. If its designed like that, then if its loose in a pocket or bag, it could open up a bit and get all types of junk stuck in between. Not a good design idea, if intentional.
as someone else said, it's part of the design - believe the mechanical z lock is referred in engineering terms as an over-center cam lock
and because of the limitations of the phone's body, it's at it's limit on the lock's travel on the closing side
mine doesn't do it, but it's at the cusp of doing it - ie very little resistance to self opening when held like that, and i suspect with time, as it loosens up, it will do exactly like that
i wouldn't worry about it - if you dwell on it, it's going to ruin the phone for you - i'd ignore it - ie "push away from the trees and see the forest", so to speak
my 02
I really don't think its a flaw at all. Who the hell is hang upside down like a freaking bat to send a text to their mommy? You pretty much need to hold the back side of the phone by your finger tips, than hold it upside down to make this happen. Sorry guys, but you can exchange your phone 50 times and they're all going to do the same thing. Good luck!
not really a big deal, but.. why is the menu button 'mEnu'. perhaps the cost of capital E's was down that day they made the template?
Ha-ha.... I would've never noticed if you didn't say anything... but yeah, it looks weird.
Yeah, it sucks. And the stupid "chimney" on the home button pisses me off too. It looks more like a problem then design... like a line of the black part got scraped off.

mEnu
The capitol E on the mEnu button goes all the way back to the original mytouch. I never noticed it until a customer pointed it out on the huge in store poster right behind me.
haha, i've never would've noticed any of these things if you guys hadn't pointed them out. I actually like the curvy arrow, cut in the magnifying glass and the chimney. Only thing that looks weird, or out of place, is the mEnu button.
The E has to be like that because the letters are cut outs and the lower case e would leave that little bit inside the semi-circle cut off and so it wouldn't work. I didn't notice this til this post and it was driving me a little nuts but now I think what I said is reasonable. I rather like it anyway.

Damn you, curvy arrow! ::shakes fist::
conscious design choice
It might be weird, but the mEnu capitalization is a conscious choice; an homage to the hTc logo.
I love my phone, but one of my least favorite things about it: The typography.
The T-Mobile logo is chrome on black. The four buttons are white/backlit on black. The Google logo is white on grey, and the hTc / G2 logos are cutouts on silver.
No consistency in sizing, fonts, colors or materials.
Of course, these are tiny details, and overall it's a wonderful device.
hTc.... makes sense
I didn't notice it because it looks like how I write those letters. I make an uppercase m look like a big lower case m, same with the u.
Get a hobby people. Please shut this down.

I rEally don't know what you'rE all talking about. Or is it just mE.
Yes, the whole reason I noticed the E was because it looked yellow while the m, nu, and the rest of the buttons were white.
Glad to know I'm not the only person who notices strange things like an E!

I've looked at functional G2s at Walmart, Bestbuy, and now the T-Mobile store. At each, when held upside down, the screen fell away from the body. I've seen early reports from G2 early adopters that this was occurring, but never heard any response on whether it was 'normal' or not.
Obviously, the demo phones at retail have been handled by many people and are more worn than a new phone fresh from the box. The hinge on each felt loose. The TMO rep at the store today mentioned that the lift up movement of the G2 would preserves the keys and was able to demonstrate a rubbing effect on the Slide, for what thats worth.
My question is, fresh from the box, how stable/tight should the G2 hinge be? Trying to decide whether not to buy a G2 or a MT4G once full root has been achieved.
I have had my G2 for about a week now and I don't baby it and when held upside down it does not open. But my wifes same age does open. So they age all different I think.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I have a first week G2 and it the screen does not fall down when held upside down. nor does the screen close on itself in landscape mode while being rotated all angles.
My G2 hinge falls down pretty easily when help upside down. It in no way feels flimsy, just a nuisance if you tend to text while laying down on your back, which I don't do much of, but hey, there's an on-screen keyboard that fixes that problem pretty quickly.
There are many ways to grip the phone while holding it upside down so the people who say that their screen doesn't open are holding it in a way where they're slightly making contact with a portion of the top half causing the screen to stay in place. As for me, it really isn't an issue because I never have a need to hold my phone upside down. In my pocket, it doesn't open. It only opens when I want it to. It feels sturdy and well built. There has been widespread paranoia over it due to its unusual design and people who handle it for the first time try holding it in all sorts of weird angles when they wouldn't normally do so in everyday usage. There is no defect.

Thanks for the replies. Still torn on between the MT4G and the G2. Want a physical keyboard and prefer stock Android, but the MT4G feels more solid because it lacks the hinge.
I've had my g2 for a month and the hinge on mine is still pretty sturdy. When I hold it upside down it doesn't open unless I shake it. I'm guessing the hinge issue is only with some phones.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
My hinge opens when I hold it upside down, but to get it to do it you have to hold it only by the back half, and really who does that, truth is its never bothered me, even when texting upside down the way I hold my phone it cant close by itself , this phone is worth getting, and perm. roots only a matter of time. I love the keyboard, it was kinda akward at first, but now I dont think I would be happy without it now. I haven't played the the MT4g yet but I can say im 100% happy with my G2 and with all the new mods coming out everyday its only getting better.
people with big hands may be able to use a part of index fingers to hold the screen but for my hands, it's hard and uncomfortable. it's like supporting the weight of screen.
i was wondering if i should put on double sided tape or insert some thin plastic film around hinge to make it tight.
Yeah my index's hold the screen up and stable by default. But for people with smaller hand sit mite be uncomfortable. Either way the G2 is meant to be like this. Its the whole Z-hinge.

My phone, when holding the backend only, does hang the screen in open.
I, for one, don't care. I've never had the screen open on me. The only time my G2 would be upside down is if I'm lying on my back or I'm putting it down to hide my screen from people (or not ). When I use my keyboard, I hold it like I do with my game controllers and PSP; index fingers railing the sides of the keyboard and curving along the booty, middle fingers curved and pinpointed at the tips at symmetrical points on the middle line, and then the bottom of the keyboard lying on my ring finger and the equivalent.
I like how fast the screen opens and how easy it is after getting the gel case.

Anybody else's Evo Shift loose when closed? The top can move about 1mm easily, just holding it normal or upside down causes it to happen. If i shake it holding the bottom half you can feel the top slightly moving back and forth? This normal? it seems like a small issue, but even after one day it's bugging the **** out of me.
Mine does this as well and it's rather annoying.

Mine does this thought it doesn't move enough to the point that it bothers me.
pretty typical on slider phones. Alot less than the TP or TP2 IMHO...
You can try putting a case on it. Makes everything snug and tight.
^ Shift Faced
The thing is though, this isn't a spring loaded slider, there's nothing that is pulling/pushing to give it the amount of play it has when closed. Even with spring loaded sliders, they might have a little play when closed, but they dont freely move the way the shift does. In contrast, the OG droid is the same type of slider and I've gone through god knows how many replacements of those, with no play at all. And HTC > Moto's quality as far as I can tell. Until now I guess =/ Love my shift, but still, I can definitely see a new phone in my future more recently than I thought I would.
Put a case on mine and its actually really tight now. To the point where it can be difficult to slide it open so I've been using the touchscreen more now. I refuse to take the case off though...it would be my luck that as soon as I do remove it my phone would bite the dust...

Mine has a little play in it. Not too much but just enough to make it annoying. This is my first slider so not sure how "normal" it is. I would be interested to see if anyone has any sort of fix. No insurance because I'm very careful with my phones but I'm pretty sure that "slightly loose when closed" isn't considered in the warranty lol.

Had both of those. 2 tp's and a tp2. The shift (at least mine [with all side and back stickers removed]) is pretty tight. All 4 phones naked.
there was a plastic protective cover on the inside of the keyboard, along the right and left edges. If you leave that on it doesn't seem to be loose. My Mom just got her Shift a week or so ago, and never took that plastic off, and it's solid while mine feels quite loose.
Mine's solid as a rock. Thing doesn't even budge unless I physically move it with my hand.
Hey guys.
First time posting here, sorry if i'm breaking any rules.
I have an issue with my LG G2, just wondering if it's normal. If I take my case off the phone so it's "naked" when I put some force on both ends of the device, "bending" it i guess is the best word, I can hear it crackle and it feels like it's going to fall apart honestly.
Also by the power button/volume button if I push directly there the phone crackles and I can push in on it a little bit.
Of course i'm not applying a lot of pressure when doing this.
TLDR: Phone feels very flimsy, is this normal?
Maybe you bought the "chinese" version not the korean one! !!hahahaha my g2 is solid and i use it naked all the time
Why you even trying to bend your phone? What an idiotic thread this is.

If it doesn't "crackle" during normal use, you have nothing to worry about.. Funny thing is tho I might have been really high, but I was looking at my phone and it looked twisted(literally lol) so I twisted it slightly the other way and it crackled a bunch and didn't do it anymore.. Lol. Was weird..

No bend on mine... very well made considering the materials.
mine bends 90degrees both ways and its amazing........
Mine bends more than the flex and still works. Really though, sometimes a bit of crackle from back cover when I twist it, sometimes not. What has annoyed me, on the Verizon variant, the damn volume down key can get stuck if pressed in the right spot with fingernail (right at minus sign pressing down with fingernail, doesn't happen with normal finger press). This is after a little over a month of wear. My phone is flawless every other way.
Mine is solid. I have no cracking when using the back buttons. This is the most solid phone I have owned. I have the D801 so I don't know if that matters at all.

I guess bend was a bad word to use, more like flex.
Seems like it's split 50/50. Hmm. It isn't a huge issue, it's more so by the power, directly left of the power button about 1cm. I can literally push it in a little tiny bit and you can hear crackling. Almost like there is kind of a pocket of space between the back plastic and the 'insides.'
Thanks for the replys, im out of my 14 day period so i guess i'm stuck with it!
EDIT: otherwise I LOVE the phone.
EDIT2: I guess Flex isn't a good word either considering there is an LG Flex. All I mean by "Bend" Is taking your hands on both ends of the device, (top and bottom) and pulling back slightly. Nothing enough to damage the phone at all, just to kind of test the build quality.

well, if you bend a phone that doesn't require to bend it, it is normal to here crackle.
@BrandonShea, there are actually a couple pocket gaps under that area for certain connection on the phone. The back cover is very thin plastic and removable so this is no surprise.
Mine crackles when pressure is applied on the edge and the lower back part of the phone. They should have filled the empty spaces inside with a larger battery pack. Fill it to the brim
mine snaps, crackles, and pops when I pour milk on it
