I've got a T-Mobile MyTouch slide, and my plan has the full smartphone data plan (not tzones or phone first web), is there a way to get it to work properly?
Long story short I can't put the android web on this line because I work for T-Mo and the fourth line is restricted to having a smartphone data plan, all three of my other lines have android.
I've looked around, seen some stuff on tzones, but not on this, I fear it won't work, but any input would be appreciated.
If you don't have an answer and you work with tmobile, I don't think any of us will be able to answer that.
Personally I can't see swapping plans between lines. It is a contract after all.

Sorry, let me explain that since I work for T-Mo, I get special plans available, they only allow me to have three regular lines, and a line with limited minutes and smartphone data. There is just no way to currently change the fourth line to have android.
I also have a an HD2 running android and it works fine with Smartphone web.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why do you have so many phones with plans? You only have one mouth. Lmao. I could understand at least two phones. One for business and one for pleasure, but you must have four different girl friends calling you on four different phones or something. REMEMBER DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY.

I get the same customer care everyone else gets, not that they're terrible, but generally google is faster.
Also, they say no android data on that fourth line, and as far as they're concerned that's that, I was just wondering if there was a way to set up different APNs or get some sort of data workaround, since my HD2 runs Android fine with smartphone web.
I work at tmo and we get 5 lines now as of earlier this month I believe. (which you can add android web to) Go to the employee phone site and check your available lines! I currently have 4 android phones running on the employee android web feature.

As a former TMO employee, I can tell you that with their limitations on what plans could be on what lines, it is tied to the SIM, regardless of what phone or APN settings you have.
Also, MAN do I miss the cheap plans they use to have. I worked there when they were still Voicestream, and I think back then it was like $5 a line.

With all the new kernels and rom developments lately, my Vibrant is running better than ever before. If this gets confirmed, that's icing on the cake. I could easily stick with this phone for a while.
Just went on the t-mobile website and changed my plan from "T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web" to Unlimited 4G Web. It says it will take up to 24 hours to change, so I will report maybe tomorrow on if I get increased speeds or not.
Hmm, interesting. My wife got a G2 and we switched our plan to an unlimited one an now I have 4g enabled on my plan (says 4g web) but I never really bothered checking speeds. But it might explain why I've been able to stream at 128kbs on tune in radio. I'll need to investigate this more.

If you buy any 3G or HSPA+ non-Blackberry smartphone they will put you on the 4G plan. The Android plan is being phased out for a more "general" data plan, and them calling it a 4G Web Plan has no impact on your download or upload speeds. It's practically the same thing.
Went through this with them on the phone when I got my HD7 because I noticed the "Android Unlimited Web" on my Vibrant's SIM (I put hte Unlimited Data in the HD7 and a 200MB plan SIM in the Vibrant). They said it was no difference, but to change it anyways since they're phasing those plans out.
This allows them to have only two types of data plans, like other carriers: Blackberry Plans and a General Data Plan. Before they had Blackberry Plans, Andorid Plans, and a General 3G data plan.
Since most if not all newer smartphones (except mid-range/low-end smartphones and features phones) will be HSPA+ (they call it 4G), they just call it a "4G Web" plan.

TheMan42 said:
Correct, I'll verify this.
4G web plans do NOT affect download speeds in the slightest, anything someone may think they noticed simply is experiencing a placebo effect.
Older grandfathered plans simply differentiated devices, now the '4G' moniker is used for all plans on any smartphone - be it Windows Mobile, Android, or Blackberry. Blackberry plans are the exception however, as they don't work correctly with other devices as they route through the BIS server. Case in point, theres even a '4G Blackberry web' plan, but no current Blackberry is remotely near 4G, they cap at 3.6 Mbps.
The only things that will affect download speed are the actual terminal you are using and the backhaul of the towers in your present location.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew this was not what it was being perceived as.
The idea that tmobile has to "enable 4g" from their customer service department seemed fairly ludicrous to me (I almost broke out the "Double facepalm" pic). Especially since my Vibrant connects to HSDPA the majority of the time which I'm fairly certain, since it's backward compatible, is actually the HSDPA+ (tmobile's "4G") network it was connecting to. I never enabled any 4G data plan. Or 3.5G for that matter.
This is also probably an attempt to get people to give up the Twenty to twenty-five dollar android data plans they've been holding onto since the G1 days.

Man, I really wanted to believe this would work. Anyone else try it out? I tried to see what mine would do, but when I looked at the services, it added 10 bucks to my overall plan, so I didn't go through with it. I'd love to see some other reviews about this.

Guys, our Vibrants are not 4G devices and wont connect faster than 7Mbs. The plan is called a 4G plan but that doesn't mean that our hardware is capable of those speeds. Don't you think someone would have posted screen shots by now if they were hitting 4G speeds? C'mon you guys should know better than that.
anyone else notice the guy who supposedly worked in corporate in the tw thread is on flex pay....
now...im not at all sure how this works, and i might get flamed for this, but might as well ask.
So since the GS4G is the same as our phones, couldn't people just swap in the 4G radio in the the Vibrant? Much like the FFC mod?

O M G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been trying to figure this out for YEARS! Was he like the mean guy from the movies or the guy from the cereal box? I HAVE TO KNOW!!!
Hello Everyone, I am currently with Tmobile and I have my G2 rooted and I love it. I use the portable hotspot feature quite a bit at work so I'm signed up for tmobiles "unlimited" internet on my phone. However Once I hit 5gb bandwidth for the month I received a text message saying that I had hit the 5gb cap for the month and for the duration of the pay period I would still have internet since I'm signed up for "unlimited" but I would have a reduced speed... Let me tell you right now its very reduced. So my first question is, do you guys have this problem? and my second question is, which service providers don't have this lame cap? My friend is on Sprint currently and he's used 12GB bandwidth so far this month and can still use his 4G speed which would be nice. So I may go with Sprint however I'd like to keep my options open so do you guys know if Verizon or At&T have the cap as well? Also what kind of phones would you guys suggest with the two? Preferably I'd like to fix the problem with Tmobile however I don't see that happening because when I went in the store they said I was already at the most internet /month.
Currently the only 2 providers that dont have a cap AFAIK are sprint and verizon. ATT used to have one, but was taken away back when the first ipad came out and now they only offer 2gb and charge you 10 dollars a gig over that. Sprint phones arent all that great right now ,probably the best phone on sprint right now IMO, would be the epic 4g. Verizons best phone is the thunderbolt, which ironically isnt for sale yet, but it will this month. they also have the iphone and some other android phones (fairly outdated at this point)
You got to remember that verizon is more expensive than t-mobile. Sprint is fairly expensive too and their 4g phones require an extra 10 dollar fee for bs reasons. If you want the unlimited data youre going to have to pony up the cash.
If i was you i would wait for the dual core phones to come to those carries, the droid bionic for verizon and who knows what for sprint.
Ps. I heard that verizon is throttling the top 5% of its users. I read it in engadget but alas, i dont have that carrier/problem so i havent looked into it.
Hope i helped a little
Edit: forgot to mention that if you want 4g you have to make sure that you are in an area that has the 4g specific for that carrier. Your friend has 4g on sprint so that means youre at least in a wimax (sprint 4g) area.
Verizon has a different 4g (LTE) that might not be in your area at this point in time.
Also sprint has 3 4g phones, t mobile has 3 and verizon has only 1 and it isnt even out yet.

personally with the price per month my wife and i are paying for tmobile i would never leave.
best way to do it is to have 5 member family plan... cheapest way at least.
A T-Mobile tech support rep told me that he was told in a recent meeting that they were going back to the 10 gig cap. He said a date wasn't mentioned...who knows if this is true or not, I'm just sharing what I was told.
That was amazingly helpful and I have a lot to consider now. I do have it pretty nice with Tmobile right now because we have a 5 family member plan and if there is a prospect of 10gig coming out then I will probably wait it out. And if the new phones come out and I still want to change then I will. Thank you so much for your help!
There is a way to defeat the throttle. I've never hit the cap myself so haven't tried it. Five year old data plan with 10gb? Limit. But for root users it involved removing 3 files from the radio? Try searching the dev threads. I do remember that T-mo was the only carrier that this would work with. The throttle takes place on your device.

Nope, my bad. I'm wrong on this one. Good luck!
Well Tmo finally saw what we were doing in data throttling and it did work realllly well..but all good things come to an end.
I have however managed to "defeat" throttling by....staying under the 5GB. Through wifi surfing. I have wifi at home and at work and those are the two places you find me . Simple.
But its a DAMN SHAME because I never rode wifi before because HDSPA is faster than wifi. Takes me twice as long to download a CM nightie on wifi.
Tmo has got to smarten up. Still they're still my favorite compared to the others.

Your broadband connection being shared via wifi must really be slow for HSDPA to be faster. What is it, DSL?

I agree, your broadband connection via wifi must really suck. I get an average of 13gb down & just under 3 gb up. Some day's I'll get a little over 15gb down. You should probably get a new router.

Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.
I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.
Just my 2 cents...
AT&T motto: If you can't beat `em, buy `em!
Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..
If they're going to pay for the upgrades themselves im all fine and for it bring on the new phones for development, and they keep our plans i will be extremely happy!
But if we have to get new phones and new contracts a lot of people will probably drop them. I know i cant get the deal i have now ANY where else for as keep.. Unlimited data, texts and 750 shared mins bt two phones for 100 bucks a month. not bad in my opinion.
3g phones are supposed to fail. Get a 4g phone. I heard T-Mobile customers will get iPhones somewhere but wouldn't count on that coming to pass. I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...
Something for us all to look into i guess and see what we come up with
I got a feeling that the govt isn't going to allow it. There seems to be a lot of media attention lately as to how it will hurt consumers. Mergers like this are not necessarily a done deal.

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.
So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..
thought?
I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens
stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.
If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..

If I keep using it as my phone,
A. Will they shut off my phone, data or both? One csr told me they would cancel my account, somehow I doubt that.
B. If they kill data only, will I still be able to text?
Thanks folks,

I guess we need to stand up against AT&T. How about setting up a date, spread the words, and on that date everyone switches to another carrier away from AT&T? I am sick tired of the dan ATT.

if that is the case well great, but how long would it be before they force us to change plans, how long before they notice that we are using our tabs as phones and force us to switch to a "data only plan"? they are already doing this to their own customers. these are the things i am worried about and the fact of possible higher plans for less. And did i mention the loss of tether? not that i use it but why would i be forced to pay for it if i ever wanted to use it when i didnt with tmo. there are just a lot of negative things, i do not see a single positive.

Good luck with that. I guess that you have never dealt with att&t. I have the uverse service with them and they continuously change my plan.
What I got today
So after losing my glasses and now I'm waiting a week for replacements, I can't see the darn Android phone so I decided I'd try one more time to get ATT to let me use my tab as my phone. I got a younger sales rep. She said the reason they are hunting us down is because we were on the iphone plan, even though I never had an iphone. I had the iphone plan back when I had my Australian HTC HD2. She changed me to the tethering plan, checked my account and says that it reads that I'm using the HTC Inspire 4G.
She said, swap it over and if they harrass you about it, which she doubted they would, then just switch back to the Inspire 4G. She said, they aren't searching by IMEI, just by that plan.
I switched back, I'll keep you updated.

Exactly why I won't use CDMA. I enjoy having a much broader range of potential devices--especially unbranded devices. And if my phone breaks or I brick it out of momentary stupidity, I can quickly swap it for one of the other phones I have.
What's funny to me about this is they 1900 people will be relocated. I call bs on that. All they will do is have them far away to fire them. The center here (where I used to work) had 700 employee's about 2 years ago. Since the announcement of the AT&T buyout they started firing everyone they could. The same center now has about 200 employees or less. If they're struggling for $$ so bad why aside a bunch of money to pay the executives. T-mobile executives have screwed thousands of employees. I was lucky enough to find a better job before most of this started but I've had a lot of friends to just come in one morning and for no reason walk right back out. The unemployment office here doesn't ask any questions anymore once you say you worked for T-Mobile. They know they're firing everyone. Awful situation if you ask me.

Agree, verizon seems like the next best choice. Our good magenta is not the same :-(
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?

And tell me they are the next best choice. If I have have to use it as a phone for data, I pick up my SGS 2 GT9100 on AT&T. If I don't care about if works or not I use my razr for the bit faster data speeds.)
