Just out of curosity to see if anyone got the test build via OTA, and did not manually update it
Yes, you should have been paying attention the last few days. This was a test release sent to a few tech bloggs for review.

Not a single person on the entirety of XDA has received the OTA.
It was press only for people who attended Google I/O.
According to what I have heard, the press people were an accident, that the test build was only supposed to goto some testers.
It seems that some of the press people IMEIs were dumped into the IMEI list by accident and that is why they received the update via OTA.
Google really has not been very vocal about this and that is what is causing the confusion.
It would have been better if they said, N1 community FroYo is due out in x weeks (we hope).
Dan
Who cares how it was released. We got a little Froyo.
Everyone complains about how it doesn't work as expected, needs to chill, considering this was a release candidate.
Personally I installed 2.2 before most, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I don't know why everyone is flipping out, it works perfect to me. I had it freeze up one time, which was when I first booted, and all I had to do was wait a few minutes for it to unfreeze. It runs great for now.
Who gives a crap where it came from and who got it.
I have a question i have a non rooted n1 i manually installed froyo on it will i be able to do the over the air update when the real thing actually comes out?

I'm with ya on this one man.
I got this phone in early Sept. Running it completely stock except using Launcher Pro Plus. Haven't rooted it because it's hardware locked. I read that all the customers will get the update by the end of October. Am I the only one that hasn't received their update officially over the air? Should I just wait a couple more days?
I just tried dialing *#*#8736364#*#* to start software update and just got connecting to DM something in notification bar. That went away after a couple mins. and tried start software update again. Got the same results.
I would wait a few days and if by Nov 1st you don't get the update then you can call your carrier and ask them to force it to your phone.
Or you could just do it manually, which honestly I suggest, because I just like many others , got a soft brick when I installed the update over the air.
You can use the software that Samsung put out, Mini Klies , to apply the update.
here's the link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559
I encountered a strange issue updating through mini kies. All went well, and my phone was running sluggishly so I did a reset and my build number went back to'eclair' but my baseband stayed ji6. I odin'd back to stock and I might just wait for the ota

I guess I can wait a couple more days. I waited this long. I'm just afraid of anything negative happening. My vibrant is hardware locked, so I'm scared to do anything to it. If the official OTA update messes me up, can I do anything to fix it, or get a new phone or anything?

Honestly, if you want to take an hour or two to read up on it, it's really easy to get rid of the hardware lock by flashing a fix through Odin. Yeah, it's daunting at first, but I took the plunge and now I'm a ROM-flashing whore. You probably don't need to read that much, but I did just because of my cautious nature. There's a thread in the Development forum with the fix and instructions.
My take is that it's far more likely the OTA will mess you up than using Odin (use v1.3!). Once you remove the lock, it's *almost* impossible to brick this bad boy.

I should look into that. I really don't look around too much. I just click on a few random threads here and there. Are the instructions simple? I know nothing about programming and this is my first smart phone.
Is this the correct thread?

Heh, I came from an ancient Blackberry, if that makes you feel better.
But yeah, using Odin is stupid easy (but you need to be on Windows AFAIK). Just to give you a quick overview of what you'll need to do, you need to download
1) the Samsung phone drivers,
2) Odin 1.3,
3) the hardware lock fix, and
4) the Android SDK (just for adb, which is like a terminal program that you use to boot your phone into download or recovery mode; since a hardware locked phone can't get into download or recovery with the buttons, you use adb to force it to reboot into download or recovery).
Use adb to boot your Vibrant into download mode, drop the right file into Odin and go. There are actually good Youtube videos on using Odin too (can you tell I researched the crap out of this before risking it?).

I am under the assumption that you can root, but if something goes wrong, you can't do anything to fix it. I was going to get a replacement with tmo, but heard this update will fix the hardware lock issue. I also didn't want to risk getting a refurb for my replacement phone.

Yeah, it's coming up on the end of the month and I haven't gotten the update either. I'm not closed to using the Mini Kies update, however the last time I updated something from Kies, (READ: JI6) it really ****ed things up, so much so that I'm still feeling the effects. Will the Mini Kies update prevent me future updates like Froyo, or will I me married to Kies and unofficial updates and flashes?

It downloaded randomly and says something like "phone will update, power down, and power up automatically for this special offer"---GREAT!! a SPECIAL offer that is ESPECIALLY ANNOYING!
I dont like how someone can just download something on my phone like that without my permission. when i want to update windows, I go and manually update it. i dont need someone to hold my hand.
anyway, it obviously didnt work.
1)it tried to reboot and it goes to the little android guy with exclamation mark and it says some failure to update message.
2) I just hit reboot phone and it goes back to my homescreen
3)it goes directly into trying to install again.
4)my only option is to postpone it for 24 hrs
What should i do? I want:
1) full control over my device(pls go verizon or whoever is trying to control my phone)
2)to fix this issue

its on DI01.
first thing I did when I got the phone was do the "how to root, install CWM, voodoo,...." thread.
I haven't updated it because the thing runs great and I was just going to wait until we have a super stable 2.2 to go to.
Is freezing innopath gonna cause any problems though??
I don't understand why this hasn't been addressed on this forum yet. not that I am impatient. usually these guys are really on top of things.

It won't cause problems. And what else can they do, anyways? The developers here can't automagically push changes to your phone! If you install any of the ROMs posted here, the updater won't try to update it, because it won't be there (or, like said, you can just manually disable/remove it).
You probably didn't see anything about it because there hasn't been a new update recently or anything, the last one being a fairly minor update shortly after the previous one was released to boot.
If you're still running DI01, it's probably trying to update you to DL09/EA28, which is the current highest version.
As stated, either freeze it with Ti or just move the .apk to name.apk.old in /system/app. Either way will prevent it from running, ever.
Well dl09 also fixes gps. It's nice.
Seriously, DI01 is obsolete. EA28 is better in every way. But if you chose to love your DI01, there is nothing we can do.
Also, adrynalyne's super clean rom is pretty nice. But again it's up to you.

i actually havnt kept up to date with how 2.2 is right now for this phon, how stable is the leaked version?? my phone just runs flawlessly and I want to keep it like that. the main reason I would even upgrade is just to get flash and fix gps(which i dont really have much problem with anyway)

Well even if you have voodoo, you can flash dl09 all in one odin which will bring you up to spec with the public accessibility.
The current 2.2 works wonders in comparison however... I don't know how I lived without it.

Personally, I feel like I jumped the gun with EB01. GPS works worse, it's a bit flakier all around, and I had a hell of a time dealing with restoring SMS (I had to make a backup, restore an old one, back the SMS up, restore the eb01 backup, then restore the SMS... only to have the SMS app auto-delete all but the 200 latest!).

EB01 is the latest Froyo leak (DL30 was the first&previous, and was far buggier). I upgraded to DJ05 because there were more rom/theme options available for it at the time than DI01, as well as hoping it'd fix the horrible GPS performance (it didn't, nor did EB01). I upgraded to EB01 after it was out for a while because, well, I wanted Froyo (plus, I'm going to be using Push updates for an app I'm working on... and C2DM doesn't work on Eclair).
I love my phone but it's frustrating seeing other galaxy devices getting updates left and right while we get left in the dark
I posted a comment on samsung forum saying that this phone is great but it's already outdated when it hit the stores and they denied my comment
Honestly I'm losing hope due to the fact my girlfriend had a Droid Incredible with 2.2 even my old G1 has 2.2 it may be to much for it to handle it but it still has 2.2
Btw. If it wasn't for you developers I would have left a long time ago Thank You Guys

It will get 2.2 eventually, but only time will tell how long. If we can get kernel source for the I500 phones, we should be able to get you a working kernel, and you may be able to use one of the Fascinate Froyo ROMs then. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the kernel until Samsung releases the OTA or source because of the different video driver used for the screen/ticker/soft keys.

I'm with you on this update lincoln3823. Very frustrating hearing other phones have froyo while a phone released in November is unable to get an update.
I love my phone but I'm going crazy with my RSS not working at all and SNS not working correctly (facebook-yes; twitter-no).
I've even reset my phone and it worked for maybe a couple of days.
Why won't they push an update to froyo??

If that's true, that really stinks.
Sure wish I new someone who knows the answer to this question.
Heck, I might even pay for it, if the cost (ROI) was worth it. Sure would like to see flash on my phone. Besides froyo has 57% of the market vs. eclair at 31%.
That's crazy considering the Continuum came out in November.
On another note:
I haven't rooted my phone and I noticed your signature as Rooted.
Question? Is it worth rooting? I've read Pros on it but haven't seen any Cons. What's the drawback on it? Updates? Can you revert back to stock if I choose too.

samsung submitted ec17 for the fascinate to verizon...and apparently that is still in testing...im just gonna assume it ll fail testing like most of their updates and never come out
the fascinate root crowd no longer really cares though as the mesmerize 2.2 officially came out w/ source....
but it seems like continuum updates follow quickly behind fascinate updates...so if hypothetically a fascinate ota occured like this week then it would probably be soon after for the i400
Ok, I was just fine tweaking 2.1 for now until something happened and we finaly got 2.2+, since Eclair isn't really that bad. Now I am starting to see 2.2+ only apps (ones that I want to try mostly) and it's starting to make me less patient. It saddens me since this phone had so much potential with the decent hardware and interesting ticker feature, but it is quickly being left in the dust as the little android that couldn't... /sadpanda
Looks like Samsung has released the Froyo source code for the Fascinate... that could be a good sign... Of course, isn't there a Fascinate on Rogers (Canada) that has had Froyo for awhile?
I know I saw it on android central and I got excited but then again we did get left behind once before

Hi everyone,
Some of you may already know me (the new guy to rooting ). For those who don't, I'm completely new to rooting and roms (just started a day ago).
I've tried two different roms so far other than stock (Urban and ERA, currently on ERA). and one of the biggest things to come to my eyes is the keyboard lag fix..
This fix is so significant it's crazy. I mean I used to hate the Epic keyboard because of this. I never knew that I could simply root and have a rom that would have fixed this issue until now.
I'm really curious why Samsung didn't bother to apply this fix? Did it sacrifice anything? Was it simply to make the keys more sensitive?
Just curious about everyone elses thoughts.

I think you just hit the nail on the head! It's amazing what an enthusiast programmer can and will do that someone just earning a paycheck will overlook, intentional or not.
I agree with you there, but it makes you wonder exactly how the hell something so BAD and so CENTRAL to the device can make it out the damn door! Not only that, but it doesn't get fixed for multiple releases! *boggle*

Yeah, I bought this phone and not the Evo one of the main reasons being the keyboard. I was more than dissapointed with the crappy keyboard problems. If I knew there's a fix if you root, I would have done this months ago lol.
Mkasiak, huge thanks.
Thanks the the Devs here, the current fixes added to the Gingerbread build really make the Epic shine.
It's fast, stable, has great battery life, a useful keyboard, and gtalk working.
It really makes me happy that I decided to choose this phone over the EVO back when both these phones were top of the line.

Awww, just go ahead and root and fix it! and while you are at it, fix your GPS too! I waited a long time to root while on Froyo, but I finally did, but went unrooted to get the OTA to GB (don't really know why) and couldn't stand being unrooted. I wanted control back that only root could give me. Even my wife asked me to root her phone to keep certain apps from killing her battery.
