I was under the impression for some time that HSPA (not plus) is 3G until my phone cycled through signals and a G came up for a little while.
The reason I ask is because I was able to edit the build.prop on my G1 to get my 3G speeds to nearly 3Mbps. Now with H, it is substantially slower.
I don't see a way to force the phone to 3G networks to try the build.prop. Is there a way to? Are H and H+ at different frequencies? And will there be a way to differentiate between those when H+ comes to my area?
Thanks.

As of right now there ready is no way to tell the difference other than running speed tests. I wish they would have kept the 3G logo for hspa and H for hspa+.

H is for 3g and 4g. There is no way to tell as of now. I do believe they run on the same signal/freq.

I agree, sometimes ill have the H and run the speed test and get about 800kbs up and down.... and sometimes ill run it and get 7MBs down and 1.3 Up
Try downloading Signal Strength Widget. It let's you know what you're running.
The G that u saw ment gprs and is slower than edge, it doesn't mean 3G.
Just download speedtest.net, run a test then click on your scores, it will tell you whether or not u are on 3g or 4g

Again with this same discussion??
RTFM and search the forum before posting a new topic...pretty please?

Seconded. The Mobile Signal Widget by Empirical switches between G/E/3G/H as it should, and actually gives you a more detailed signal level than the regular bars (gives you more of them, and signal in dBm on top). Highly recommended.

Wow, very nice! That's a solid little widget. And it's showing 3G in a few places that I definitely thought were H. Very helpful, I like it. Thanks for sharing! Here's the QR code for anyone else looking for the app:

Can you do this repeatably? I think this is probably a case of bad sample data. 4G speeds tend to fluctuate *wildly* because of a.) environmental impacts of a 2.5GHz signal (ever tried to measure actual WiFi performance on a laptop over 802.11n? You'll see what I mean - no two tests are remotely the same) and b.) Network congestion, usage, and number of devices, and c.) Signal strength. If you're indoors, don't even think about comparing 4G speeds, as the 2.5GHz frequency is terrible at penetrating buildings.
In order for your claim to be valid, it would be useful to have time-dependent data, and at least say, 10-20 test results. Then, the same after the update would be useful as well. I've seen 4G speeds on my Evo be 400kbit/s one day and 3.9Mbit/s another day, same place. My Epic 4G has given me speeds in excess of 5Mbit, but later tests didn't get the same performance.
I'm not saying that there's no chance you're right, but I'd say that *much* more data is needed. Try it again tomorrow, at different times, in different places. See how it stacks up. I'm just gonna put this as bad data. (Also, reboot your phone just in case you have a data hog running.)
Yeah you really can't tell anything by one or two tests. I just ran three tests and I got download speeds of 6300, 3200 and 5300. Uploads varied from 430kbps to 1300kbps.
I'm in a fairly poor signal area right now but even in good signal areas it can vary a lot. At work I get anywhere from 6000kbps to 9000kbps.
i just did 3 tests as well from inside my room with all but 1 bar and i am also in Brooklyn (a area that has 4g but it's not officially live yet) and my results were...
Download/Upload
7638/1142
6970/1128
8009/1119
I don't know what they were before but speeds like that are just fine for me i think it was just a random mess up for you
My 4g is fine.

here's my results. mine usually sticks to umts but occasionally switches to hspa if I'm in the right area (modaco r6 replaces the 3g with an H). usually doesn't increase the speed noticeably though.

My fastest have been 4.2D and 1.8U
My ns at home has gotten up to 6 on bionix and 1.8 up. My former mytouch4g would pull 8 and some change.
I would love if it were possible to hack some driver to pop the radio up to 21mbps. Don't know if its possible but I've heard the radio for 7.2 is the same as 21mbps and that its just modulation that changes. Might explain why the vibrant plus will have the 21mbps capability.

OK talked to our sprint rep, they are only testing right now. Coverage will go in and out with speeds changing all the time. He didn't know how long before fully operational. They are just testing a few towers right now. What a tease.

If I can pick up 4G where I'm at, I usually hit about 2.5-3mbps.
I go a bit north (next big city up) and I can hit 7.8mbps on 2 bars of 4G.
I got as high as 10.8 and as low as .04 (yes on 4g)
why do people make stupid threads like this??? Just shows that most of you people don't know what you're talking about. lol. the download speeds are going to change depending on where you live and what bandwidth the tower even has to begin with. and so on and more factors.

In Iowa City, IA, I've been able to get over 5 on a couple attempts since the HSUPA update, but typically average around 4. Definitely an improvement, especially with boosted upload speeds, but still not even close to this phone's capability.
New Port Richey on top (normally 1-1.5 up) and the poor ones were today at lunch in Oldsmar. Always poor there during the day, but can usually get at least 1. I don't think they can handle the traffic.
Mine actually went down when going to 1.8.3, thinking about flashing back to 5.7 and doing the radio mod thingy (so technical) and going back to the average of 4.5mbps. Now I get luckly if I reach 2mbps
While I was tethered last night I recorded speeds of 7.21 D/L and 1.58 U/L. This was in North Jersey.
I get the same speeds as my gf's iphone (1 - 3meg down / 1,2meg up)
So I don't think hspa+ is working yet..

I was at my Dad's office scanning and faxing a document for a client through myfax and man I was stuck at 300kb/sec and the total size was about 16MB. Needless to say, it took a while
Two days later I get the Gingerblur'd version of the newest update and I'm hitting 1Mb/sec up and those PDF files weren't too much of a problem.
It really does make a difference.
