I used to get 4g conenction in only certain aprts of Brooklyn and the speeds ranged from 8-10 mbps when I had a full conenction. Now I get a full connection everywhere in Brooklyn, NYC, etc and I average 4-6 mbps. Usually 4.x though which is saddening.
My boss told me a company known as Clear is the one that sets up the 4g for Sprint and if you go on their site they offer 2 plans. a 10mbps plan and a 6mbps plan and I'm pretty sure they are giving us the 6mbps plan which is BS since we were told that we can get speeds as fast as 10mbps on our Evo's and Epic's. Show me your results though if I'm wrong, but ever since Clear services went active my speeds dropped from 9.xx-10.xx to 4.xx-5.xxmpbs which is perfectly fine for a phone, but I was hoping to set this up as my primary internet since cablevision is so ****ing unreliable.
they have talked about adding caps for a long time now, sprint especially, the load has been straining for both companies which is why some parts oh my area dont go past 2.5Mb/s right now but a block down it reaches 6Mb/s and 2 further blocks we get 9.8Mb/s, lately the 2.5 are has been reaching 6 and the 9 has dropped to 6, they cant keep throttling forever, so long as the caps and plans are reasonable i dont see too much of a problem
i dont see a big deal my 3g speeds are great only reason you would be unhappy about a cap is if your one of them clowns downloading gigs at a time .

I'm not going to lie I did try that too see how fast it could go, but I didn't need it for that. I just think the 10mbps was soo much more faster than the 4-5 I'm getting now and all I've been using it for is surfing the web on my desktop and maybe a few video calls, because my cablevision is giving me 1 mbps down and 2mpbs up and they say it's the modem, but I replaced the modem and it's still the same so they are coming back next week to change it again so I wanted to sue this until I got my cable back.
Also my 3g speeds are terrible. I get around .2-.5 mbps tops.
For the longest time I've been getting 3-4 Mbps downloads on 4G. Suddenly tonight, I popped this 12+ Mbps. Holy carp. Seriously.

You are correct. 10 is substantially faster. Twice as fast.
I doubt there is a cap yet, likely it's a signal or load issue.

For someone with over 2600 posts I have NEVER seen anything informative from you and incase you didnt read the OP is talking about 4G NOT 3G... Also I pay for what I get if I want to download **** I will. I dont need some fourm troll telling me what I can and cant do, hell you should be getting a check from sprint at this point but I'll bet your still paying them ha ha ha.
Thanks,
To OP, I have also noticed that my 4G speeds have been getting throttled. Its obvious when you hit 8MB then it just continues to bounce off 6MB.

Well maybe it's just for NYC, but you can see that it tries to pass 6 and NEVER succeeds. Once it gets close to 6 it rapidly declines and tried to fight it's way back which would make perfect sense if they've given certain areas a 6mbps down limit. Before it use to do the same thing, but it would pass 6 easily and make it to 10 and then start throttling.

You know, the NYC makes me wonder. I know wimax sucks at penetrating buildings. Could being surrounded be affecting you? Any chance you could try near or line of sight to a tower?
Just a thought since sadly I don't think we can determine the true signal strength we get on 4G.
I'm in Brooklyn, flashed back to a Sense ROM and yup, it's hovering on 6 Mbps -- I used to get 6-9 Mbps a month ago.
Folks... you get 6+ from sprint only until they formally launch in a city. Probably because of network testing. After that your gonna get capped at about 5mb. Supposedly, it has more to do with a mobile device on the network than limits on their customers. With other providers coming out with faster networks I doubt sprint would really want to cap it.

I have noticed I get MUCH faster while USB tethered, and when I have everything killed on the phone. SO all it's doing is routing over WiMax and the lapotp/computer is doing most of the work makes sense though.. it's having to do less work so the CPU can focus on routing WiMax packets only.
Anyway, I was doing some updates over ubuntu's update manager tethered and I hit 12.7Mbps down!
XDA scales down the pictures so much I have a zoomed up pick too of the network metrics
Guess I should mention I am running BBv0.3 (Hope pete comes back soon and fixes v4 or even drops froyo v5 on us)
And I have used Titanium Backup to pull nearly all htc sense stuff off that ROM as well as removing anything I didn't want running in the background.

Actually those tests were run, and I am currently sitting on the basement level of a large concrete government-style building. Granted I have a tower about 2 blocks from where I work though, still I haven't seen all these "penetration" issues people complain about with WiMax. Houston has some strong signals though.
I've actually started noticing 4G is a LOT better after the update, but it has always been very good here in Boston, even though it's not even officially launched yet.I have read somewhere that new markets have newer equipment, and Sprint is literally adding WiMAX base stations to all sprint and nextel towers. It will only get better with time.

Well those numbers were from the JSC area, and I can get 4-6Mbps where I live in West U. The "signal" strength is kinda pointless IMO because it's more your connection to the tower than your bandwidth to the internet. I have noticed better bandwidths with 1-2 bars than with full 4 bars a lot of times
well i live in an area saturated in 4g well everywhere in town but where i live...sigh
anyways los from an antenna and nothing near your speeds, and like i said my small town is saturated by 4g i can literally walk 3 streats down and 4g kicks in

And to be fair that 12.7Mbps was a peak... not sustained here is my highest "sustained" test. It seems like after a few second peak of anywhere from 10-13Mbps I get throttled back to around 9-10 max sustained. Still though very impressive for a freaking cell phone internet connection! Ha.

I think some people have come to expect too much from WiMax. I have heard complaints about it not getting more than 3Mb/s yet they don't complain about the 900kb/s they get otherwise with 3G - its more than triple yet they want more.
I am happy to get sustained 3Mb/s speeds wirelessly anywhere. Hell 2Mb/s sustained is better than any Wifi at Starbucks or places that offer free Wifi. Most of them let you ride off their T1 line. Can we say 1.5Mb/s shared to everyone!
I am very happy to get the speeds that I do. It's SOOOOO much better now with the update. I am interested to see where I got the 5Mb/s before the update to see what it will give me now. It's a local starbucks that I frequent. I am curious.

As good as it is, 2.5-3 mbps is equivalent to AT&T 3G speeds, that's why people complain.
You can say their network sucks, but it's bigger than Sprint's 4G at the moment
No 4G for me here, and I would be happy with 3 mbps sustained, but I wouldn't call expecting more than that unreasonable for 4G. It should (and will, eventually) handily beat other existing 3G networks. Looks like it has already started according to the OPs results.
My data speeds have gotten slower and slower over the past couple of months. I cant even stream a youtube video without it buffering to hell. WTF SPRINT! I know I cant be getting throttled hell my billing cycle just started.

Yeah I have the same slowdown for my data speed as well. First I thought it was just me and all my flashing addiction but after seeing this glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

Have you paid attention to what time of day data speed slows down? Could be just the network being overloaded in your area. For example I start work at 7am and if I run a SpeedTest during 6:50a-8ish I am in the 700-800kb range in my office. If I run the same test after 10a I see anywhere from 200-500kbs. The worst is near lunch hour and after 3pm....damn kids! lol

This is what happens when carriers keep adding subscribers, but are unable to keep their backhaul data pipes expanding. They need subscribers in order to build infrastructure, so we the consumer suffer in the meantime.

I also have to imagine that Android being Sprint's biggest smart OS doesn't help. WinMo/BB just kind of idles when it.. idles. Android on the other hand is built to have constant background data updating, now add a bunch of both old and new subscribers who don't know better and leave the short default polling of their thousand and one apps, and you got a scaling problem.
Its quite annoying. Forget trying to stream anything its pointless lol. There was a point where I could watch netflix with no buffer, now it takes it like 20 minutes just to get to the point where itll actually play. I dont even use it much anymore because as soon as it finally plays the buffer will kick right back in. DAMN I really dont want to have to get this AT&T DSL garbage.
Same issue with me in Wisconsin.
Had 2 friends standing next to me, 1 Verizon 1 AT&T...They both passed the 2mb mark while I chugged along at 350ish k
I used to get awesome service outside Milwaukee but now it seems like complete crap
I called sprint today about the slow data issue, I'm in green bay wi. She told Mr that a lot of people on Wisconsin have been complaining about slow data speeds. I noticed my 3g going to crap over the past month because I stream Pandora all day. Plus just looking at the bars I could tell the signal was not as good (I haven't run any speed tests).
Discovered today however that my 4g now rocks! I'll be using 4g as often as possible now. I didn't notice a big difference in battery drain because while 3g struggled, 4g flew, so I think that evened out.
This is my subjective opinion of course.

Same here, I work in downtown Phoenix and it's POINTLESS trying to stream anything over 64k quality after 2pm. I thought it was Pandora sucking, so I switched to shoutcast on Xiialive, same thing. In the morning it's fine for the most part, but once all the kids get home from school the entire network goes to crap. I don't care about 4g, I just want decent 3g... oh yeah, my speeds are .6mbs in the evening and at the slowest i'm pushing .09mbs per speedtest.net app.
Anybody notice 3G to be a bit slow lately? I used speed test awhile back and got 1.5mbps, now I get half that! Not cool.

Check your mobile internet settings. I just flashed cm7 and it has a couple of new selections...like international roaming, which was preselected. Also, it was preselected to roam on national affiliate networks. Since a lot of these roms are from people "across the pond" as they say, it will default to their servers. So, de-select those options and it will find a server closer to where you live. It is pretty kewl as it does switch to another network, but it is only 1rt speed, not 3G, so it didn't make my connection any faster. There are several threads out there on this about slow 3G speeds. I can only hope that with the 4G coming online, maybe the spectrum will open up to allow faster 3G speeds.
Lol glad im not the only 1 seeing this.. I was testing my connection in Germany yesterday LOL...
Tho even swapped back to the closest server (Germantown WI) , my speed still sucked..So I called sprint when I got home and told him my results compared to an ATT and Verizon phones while they were right next to me, and they were 6-7x faster then mine.
The CSR told me that its possible with northern Ill. getting 4G its working its way north into Wisconsin, and that could be affecting towers here while they transition..
Frankly I dont buy it. 2-3 weeks ago it was great, since then, 360kb is common. Also in the phone call I told him that I have no issues paying the $10 premium data charge, but if my phone keeps chugging along as it is now, I will be calling back since there is no way in hell I can take advantage of this "premium data" when I cant even watch a video on YouTube without constant pauses and other downloads basically crawling along.

I chatted with a rep last night and they gave me the whole "there are no issues" song and dance. Clearly with so many people noticing this in so many different areas there is SOMETHING wrong with Sprints network. Either that or theyre throttling their speeds thinking people wont notice.
The csr i spoke to said he was going to push something thru to my phone and I should reboot it..which I did..
I see somewhat of an improvement at home (I THINK theres a relay on the watertower near my house but im not sure) and its now about 1.4mb down...Tho most of my issues are when im away from home and not near WiFi lol
I really hope Sprint isnt pulling a ninja throttle job on us to ease up the network for all the new subs

I'm 20 minutes outside of Baltimore which IS 1 of the 4G operational cities, and on my wifes iPhone 4, it barely reaches 600k download and 300k upload. Don't know if there is an issue with the towers around here, or somethine else. My daughters 3GS get about 1.6 download and about 21k upload. When I had my Atrix Wednesday, it was getting about 400k download and about 120k upload. All 3 side by side, my daughters 3GS always got the better download speeds, and my wifes 4 getting the best of the upload speeds. In comparison, my Evo was getting 1.1 download and 830k upload (at 3G speeds, I'm about a mile away from 4G at my house).

iPhone what? No such model as an iPhone 4G.
And AT&T doesn't cap speeds on iPhones. Just all the others.
i was standing in AT&T on Monday while they were getting my phone issue sorted around.... and people were there looking at iPhones, and they kept thinking that. They seemed to think that the iPhone 4 was a 4G phone.... because a lot of people DO seem to refer to it as the iPhone 4G. KINDA makes sense... seeing as it is the 4th generation iPhone (Original, then iPhone 3G, then iPhone 3GS, now iPhone 4).... but that little misnomer tends to get confusing when people take it literally.
Even funnier is that they said they didn't want to get an iPhone 4 that was capable of 3G at the highest, and then 3G gets shut down when 4G becomes the norm. I'd almost swear the lady wanted to give him a "WHAAAAT?" look. She politely said that wouldn't happen since if a 4G phone couldn't connect to a 4G service, it would drop back to 3G.
Aaah..... not quite technically inclined people and technology.... isn't it grand? Not trying to sound like an a**.... but it's the truth no matter where you go, especially Best Buy.

I meant to say 4, was in a hurry running out the door. Regardless, AT&T's so called 4G speeds are a joke to say the least! I was also making mention that in Baltimore, which is 1 of the 12 4G up and operational cities, I wasn't getting no where near 4G speeds. My Sprint 3G was faster, and much, much less latency!
You would have thought all the money on iPhone sales over the past 4 years, they would have put some of that money back into there backhaul sooner, rather than later. T-Mobile in the Baltimore region constantly gets between 14-18Mbps downlaods and 3-5Mbps uploads. Hell, even in Salisbury which is a small town, T-Mobile gets 14Mbps constant. But again, this isn't about T-Mobile's 4G, its about the lack of AT&T's 4G!
My way of letting AT&T know I wasn't happy with the 4G, RETURN THE PHONE! We as consumers pay to much money to be beta testers for big companies making billions!

LOL. i got one like that. less than 1mbps down, but like 18 up. WTF?
dosnt make any sense.
like others my speedtest result are really all over the map.
sometimes i will get over 3 down, right now i just got .99. othertimes its rediculously slow at like .15
im not reading too much into it because the phone almost allways loads a webpage full of pictures at an acceptable speed
Wow i really do want this phone badly. But i'm just so afraid of sprints 3g coverage. I can barely watch a you tube video now. Anything that involves data sucks. What good is a phone if the coverage is horrable. Plus now they are really going to get hammered with to many people on the network for them to handle. Anyone else afraid of this?
I feel the same way. I live in phoenix and their 3g here (at least around my job and home) sucks balls. My friends edge tmobile phone gets better speeds.
No cause my sprints coverage has been great

Sprint in Sacramento is kick-ass. I'm not worried.

+1 for sactown always have full bars
I posted this in another thread but it applies here too. I get crappy 3G in my area and no 4G. They are so focused on bringing 3D phones but we can't even upload/stream regular vids to YouTube with their ****ty network. Why not roll out 4G in more cities and beef it up first? T-mobile is turning up the heat with 40mb in a few cities. This proves that sprint could turn it up as well if they wanted to.

I do wish that the new Evo did have the LTE radio, as rumored, but I get 5Mbps in my apartment on 4G, so I'm not going to complain too much. And I have no issues with my 3G in this area, either.
The thing of it is guys, is what are our options? AT&T-Mobile or Verizon. Both with data caps, sub-par customer service(at least from my experience with the GF's iphone) and high rates. There's really no other choice.
That being said, sprint absolutely needs to step up their network. My evo will never connect to 4G. i can be sitting in downtown Dallas, TX, right in the middle of the alleged 4G coverage area and never connect. Its worthless.
I've never had an issue with 3G. Wimax is another thing. It's mostly good but I hardly use it for anything. I'm almost always in Wifi when I want to download a big file anyway. Pretty sure they are going to eventually add LTE support to their towers since Wimax is ok for cheaply blanketing an area in Wifi-like coverage but isn't so great in big buildings and they are dependent on Clearwire's oversubscribed network.
For all the talk of "why are they worrying about 3D phones and stuff like that", they need to stay up on the flashy new handsets because that is what gets them subscribers. This is their chance to really make or break their company with the playing field narrowing soon. AT&T proved with the iPhone that folks will put up with all kinds of crap for a must-have handset so they need to keep putting out exclusives that stand out in the market in order to stay attractive to customers.
Moving to another company would cost me a lot more per month and add a data cap so I am not going anywhere soon. I used to have T-Mobile to fall back on if Sprint ever pissed me off but with them being bought up, it's time to double down on Sprint.
Since when does VZW have a data cap? And I dont mean some data cap that "may" come at some point down the road. At this point the data is still unlimited.
I live in KC, which is basically saying the Sprint HQ (overland park is a division of KC) and the service here could def be better. 3g is no too bad, unless you go to Overland Park. Which is funny, because your IN the campus, and service blows. 4g... you pretty much have to be downtown to really make it "better" than 3g. I too find it odd that t-mo can ramp up 3g speeds to topple our 4g. Co worker has tmo and he dominates me in d/l speed. Somehow for him that equates to his mytouch slide 4g being better than my evo, but then again he does have a wicked self idolize-ing issue.

what part of downtown? i can sit over by the opera house and get 4g.
Ok guys, relax. It's one of two things if you are getting slow 3g speeds.
First, Sprint is actually growing again. In some areas it's growing so much that the existing network is at capacity. It's being addressed.
Or, it's a bug with some phones on 3.70 or 3.70 based ROMs. It's being addressed in the next update (not sure if it's going to be gingerbread or not)

Not disagreeing at all with your points, but the max capacity is what the op is saying he's/she's afraid of. I've seen extremely slow coverage expansion of 4g in KC, while other carries have been going hard at it. It's doubtful they are expanding 3g much anymore since 4g is the "new baby." I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but if the op is more concerned with coverage, and the fact that we face $10 a month for 4g coverage, he may very well be better off with another carrier.
You all act like Sprint could revamp their entire network overnight if they wanted. I know for fact they are working on it, and I see signs of improvement all the time. I can get 2Mb downloads now on 3g in several locations in my city where 2-3 months ago I was lucky to get 200k. Maybe they could make people happier faster in the short term by taking shortcuts, but it looks like they're doing it right. So have patience or gtfo.

Well if it's ok in your city then that should be ok for everyone worldwide then. Try growing up before posting please.

Supposedly Sprint also has a "cap." Never seen it myself, but that "rumor" has gone around a bit.
I feel the exact same way. My 3g is terrible, I get anywhere from 200-700 MAX DOWN and about 400 UP. No 4g at all. :/

Try growing up?? WTF??? Did you not click on the link to see that I was trying to provide some hope for people that are not in a good data area?
I did not even say it was ok in my city... I said there are signs of improvement and there are places that are great. I was just trying to help people out who think the network sux everywhere and Sprint is not doing anything about it anywhere... because that is wrong. They are working on it diligently.
Perhaps my "have patience or gtfo" comment was a little rude, but that sums up the situation here. The network sux. It's getting better. If you can't wait for the improvements, complaining on xda is not going to do anything for you.
