Does anyone else see the camera thing in the upper left of the G2? Looks like a camera to me.... It's not easy to see but it's there. Sorry if this has been brought up before...
What do you know about the front camera?

That's probably the proximity sensor.

The G2 does not have one. That is the poximity sensor and light sensor I believe.

Uhmmmm.....I don't have a G2 but im pretty shure what your seeing is the proximity sensor for the phones screen to turn off when you put it up to your face.
Nah its light sensor and proximity sensor. Sorry

it would have been sweet if it was a camera to do chat and stuff but no, its a sensor
This is exactly what I said when I first received the phone, I was just hoping I was wrong and when we started rooting this device and looked at the internals, we found a FFC.
If it was just empty space, I'm sure one of the hackers here would have installed one just like the Samsung Vibrant.
I'm always amazed at how tolerant this community is of sheer stupidity.

Well I just replaced my arias digitizer, all works well besides making and receiving calls. My screen will turn black and be unresponsive, I can be heard by the other person but on my end my phone is unresponsive. I would have to take out the battery to get it to respond, which is ridiculous. This has been an issue for many people and I want to get to the bottom of it. All help is welcomed, thank you.
There is a tiny rubber cover for the proximity sensor that needs to be there for it to work properly. It is easy to lose when you replace the screen.

Currently I am messing with it and I've tried many things. Could you possibly describe it, much appreciated.

It is a little rubber thing, square on one side and round on the other, with a hole through it. It fits over the proximity sensor to focus it through the round window on the glass.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Well apparently I must have put my earpiece in wrong too and I can't hear anything during a call. Many thanks if you can tell me how it goes in.

I resolved the speaker issue. now its just the damn sensor, i cant wake from calls :/. To be exact, what does the proximity sensor look like and which tiny window does it "see" through?
Right next to the speaker are two little sensors. The closest to the speaker is the proximity sensor and the other one is the light sensor. Above these on the glass are two round windows.

If you search around on here, someone posted a hack for disabling the proximity sensor. This will enable you to make calls, but you will obviously lose the sensor function.
Sent from my Liberty using Tapatalk
I have seen that thread about disabling it, I'm trying to keep that as very last resort. Well does the sensor look like a tiny little chip?
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Yes, it has a little circular 'eye' on it.

Thank you. I'll continue to mess with it. Btw, what do you know about the gingerbread development? Anything about the aria?

The Cyanogen people are working on it as we speak.

Anyone know how to replace the front camara with out breaking the phone?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I beleive the front facing camera is solder to the motherboard. So that will require some soldering skills.

One of the things that's critical is getting it mounted properly. It needs to end up so it's firmly pressed against the back of the front glass, otherwise dust gets in there something awful. My first one has a badly aligned camera and after 2 months all you could see was dust. The camera was completely useless.
Bear in mind that the camera sits right behind the headphone port, which is basically a giant hole in the case saying "Dust, come in here!".
If the camera is borked though, and you bought it from T Mobile, they'll replace it.
Ok thanks

I noticed a weird light being emitted from proximity sensor when I entered the stock Samsung messaging app. It looks like it could be an infrared light coming from the sensor, but it's faintly visible to the naked eye. I thought I would take a video of it to show what I'm talking about. It's more apparent in the video than what you actually see. You can see it yourself in a dark room.
Has this been addressed? Does anybody know why this is happening?
isnt it looking to see if you move the phone to your ear in the messaging app so it can do the call feature?
I noticed this on mine last night. It's not like that right now though
I have the Motorola Atrix and when I use the proximity sensor, it does the same thing, glows a very very dim red, only visible in a dark room. Guessing that's how that sensor works in a generic way.

You have the eye tracking on? I just assumed it was that.
SwiftKeyed on my Sprint Galaxy SIII...
Mine does the same thing. It's for the direct call feature for texting. If you turn direct call off in your motion settings you won't see it anymore.

Doh... I feel silly for posting this now... Well, at least we have some sort of visual proof of it?
Haha no worries dude. Really easy to over look the little things! I was curious when I first saw it on mine as well.

Wow I have never noticed this before, haha pretty cool

I don't think mine's ever done this before and I've enabled smart stay before.
i have that as well...noticed it a few days ago..didn't think much of it
It's direct call for texting. Really it's anything that uses the proximity sensor. Smart stay uses the front facing camera.

So my phone turns off right when i turn it on.. I've been lurking around and I've heard its the proximity sensor.. there's an app called phone tester that i got from the play store, it said the P.S. was "far"
Do all the G2s say that or is it just mine cuz it's faulty?

Hopefully someone can help me out. This is verizon vs980. I needed to replace my screen bc I got a dead zone in the digitizer. In my experiences with screen replacement, replacing just the lcd/ digitizer assembly never goes well, aftermarket double Side tape never holds it to the mid frame like factory. So I opted for a digitizer/lcd/mid frame assembly. Simply swap the guts. Everything went well. After about a week the digitizer began lifting from the mid frame (as though it weren't factory assembled) . Little mad about that bc it's the whole reason I opted for that type of assembly. So I decided to return it. This time,I figured if they're gonna lift like that from the "factory" I might as well save the twenty five bucks and just buy an lcd/digitizer this time and stick it to the mid frame myself. I did. Once I was totally done, everything seemed to be just fine. Then I realized the knock on does not Work, and my proximity sensor was acting up. Didn't worry about the proximity sensor since I'm taking it back a part anyway to send this assembly back bc knock on isn't working... So I sent it back. Got a new one, same issue ! No knock on and proximity sensor is acting up. So , suspecting proximity sensor as culprit I unplugged it. Still no knock on. So I then pulled the proximity from the housing and Used a proximity tester app to test it. When its out of the mid frame, dangling, it works fine (still no knock on) but when I put it back into the midframe housing the proximity sensor registers something in front of it ( no its not glue or tape, digitizer is unattached permanently at this point) confused I looked at pictures I took from that very first assembly that I took before returning. I found there is a black housing trim that I accidentally left in the housing I sent back ! It pops into the midframe, then the sensor pops into that.. I suspect this is why my proximity sensor goes haywire when it's in the assembly, but why is my knock on not working?! That black piece I left in housing ? Bad sensor all together? Coincidentally got two bad digitizers??? Rom? (Tried to different same result) stumped. So to sum it up right now, I have no knock on, and the proximity sensor constantly registers something when it's placed into the housing, but works fine outside the housing.

No I didn't, I don't have my sim card in to access the dialer. Suppose I could try that, but it worked just fine with the lcd/digitizer/frame assembly. Is this something you're supposed to do after a screen replace?
