My phone is getting so hot while it charges that it is uncomfortable to hold. Are any other people having that problem? I'm afraid it's going to over heat to the point of no return.
Mine sits on the bed with me when I listen to Pandora at night. After a few hours I reach over to kill the tunes and it is hot. Not painfully hot but very concerning hot.
Yeah, when my phone was on the bed covered by my blanket, and my alarm was ringing for quite some time before I woke up, it was pretty hot. But it cooled down in no time.. so I wasn't worried. And it has happened twice only in my days of using the phone.
I can use mine for hours and hours and it doesn't get hot what so ever. Listening to music while browsing the internet and taking calls in between...
My Battery seems fine. I use setcpu with notifications if it goes above a temp. Never got one. and i check the temp now and again.
and it never feels hot at all compared to the vibrant.
So you guys think maybe I have a defective device? This morning it was was like my own personal hand heater.
I don't let my device get over 98 degrees farenheit. If its getting hot while you have it under the covers and listening to music for hours, you should consider not doing that anymore.

My phone has never been under covers while running. It heats up when I charge it which I can't stop doing because it needs power to survive. Also, it's spelled "Fahrenheit."

Right now when I put my phone to charge it gets extremely hot for some reason...I'm using the charger it came with and in just 10 minutes charging it gets to 112 degrees fahrenheit..i am running setcpu to the minimum when asleep and it still gets super hot for some reason..can anybody explain why it gets so hot?

My G2 gets hot when i charge and play angry birds at the same time... Sometimes it gets super hot when I charge from the USB port of my head unit (5V @ 500mA, I dunno if this affects anything).
It's pretty intermittent for me.
Also do you have a case on it? I have the black Tmobile gel case. I don't know if that acts as an insulator lol. I haven't checked temps
I had the same issue... I listen to Old time radio at night while falling asleep. Upon wake up one morning to an alarm on my phone stating my battery was over heating.... I ripped that sucker right the H3!! out and threw it in the garbage just in case it exploded.... scared me so bad that I went on amazon and bought a pillow speaker LOL

well when i first got my phone i only charged it when the battery light was red and hollow. And at times i would put it under my pillow due to the alarm being so loud, didnt want to wake up my son.
But the past few days when i charge it and put it under my pillow it gets really warm, it never did this before, any reason why?
AFAIK all phones do, as well as any battery you charge (MP3 players, laptops, etc).
yea I agree, I think that is something most smartphones do, my mytouch did it... so did the g1
Thats because it charges at 1000mA via AC.
Don't charge it under your pillow! definitely not good for it.
Today I charged for an hour my n1 over usb.
It was really hot.
Then I go to home, and when I arrived, it was again really hot, and battery life is over.
So I reboot and now is ok, but is very very strange...
yeah they get hot, i have the battery life widget and also shows the battery temperature, when it was charging it peaked to 110 degrees lol
I came from a mytouch 3g, didnt have it long, i love Android, i guess i change the alert to something more calm. But before i charged it under my pillow and it never got hot. Maybe its a wear and tear thing
Any device to which you're pumping power into, or using power, generates heat. That's how it works. The only difference between the devices is how much it draws; the more it draws, the hotter it gets.
Yep. Don't charge under your pillow. It needs air or it will get super hot. Not a good thing.
Man...I thought my N1 was going to burst into flames today. 114.5 degrees...not sure if it would have gone any higher.
I was in the car using an AC/DC adapter. Had my navigation going along with my music. The glass on the phone got hot to the touch! I unplugged it right away.
How high of a temp can this phone endure without damage? If it were to overheat, would it just freeze up and shutdown?
Anyway...what's really weird is that the phone was plugged in when battery life was at 80...when before I unplugged...it was at 79. Huh?
warm nexus!
i charged my nexus tru the usb a few days ago, yes it got warm like always but when it was fully charged. it stayed warm even when it was unplugged from the usb. i know that was kinda odd and it drained the battery, it was at 76% just after 30mins. so i reboot and everything went back to normal. what the hell?! i think its a bug. what i do now just to be safe is i reboot the nexus after every charge and check if it stays warm...
I turn off my phone at night and charge it with the wall charger. I understand it being warm while the battery is actually charging but when I wake up in the morning after 8 hours on the charger it is still warm. That doesn't seem normal to me considering the phone is turned off. Anyone else experience this behavior or is something wrong with my phone?

where do you put your phone overnight? is it covered? my actual Phone (HTC 7 Pro - ouch) gets warm whenever i load it, but it´s turned on all night. Also i burn my fingers from time to time because i cover it with my blanket by accident.
I think you used phones before which experience did you made? or is it the first time that you turn off your Phone for chargeing (i never did)

I charge the phone on my desk so it is not covered by anything. Previous phones I had in a case while charging overnight so I'm not sure if they got warm. It's not burning hot or anything, just warm to the touch. I just figure if the phone is off, once the battery reaches 100% charging should stop and the phone should be room temperature.
So I was charging my phone last night and it was under my pillow on airplane mode as usual, because I use it to track my sleep patterns. But this morning I woke up phone was off, with the charging battery icon showing only, and was so hot to the touch I literally couldn't even pick up the phone. I was really surprised it didn't melt or start a fire, that's how hot it was.
Now today after letting the phone cool down, it doesn't seem to be taking charge well at all, I'm having a very hard time getting past 25%, if I use the device while charging it will actually drop charge while in use (and this is with the wall charger).
I'm thinking the battery cells have been damaged by extreme heat. but just wondering if anybody else had the phone get this hot?
Sounds like damage to me! Sorry to hear that man.
Also seems like an irreversible damage to me :/
Some day I accidentaly left my LG GT540 letting it charge under my pillow. It got EXTREMELY hot and I unplugged it swiftly; I was so frightened that the battery (Li-Ion!) might have literally blown up.
To be honest, you should be grateful that your pillow didn't catch on fire together with your head, really... NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR PHONE CHARGING UNDER ANY PILLOWS!
Well guys funny thing is, seems to be charging ok now.
I believe I'm having a similar problem that a lot of other people are having with the phone getting stuck on USB charging mode even with the wall adapter, so not accepting ACpower. But once I reconnected it a few times now its charing on AC and got back up towards 70%, so I think luckily I might be ok.
But damn this phone gets so much hotter than the galaxy nexus.
My phone never gets hot when charging...ever. I think you might have an issue with your phone
I went to bed with my nexus 4 charging under my pillow for about 3 hours. This is how I usually store my phone when I sleep because I don't have a night stand and haven't had any other problems with my other devices. Anyways, I woke up and it was realllly hot. First thing I noticed was that it had stopped charging as the charging indicator was not on and this has been happening for a while now. I tried awaking it and it wouldn't do anything. I tried again and it got stuck at the Google logo. I then shut it off and tried booting it into recovery mode with TWRP and from there powered it off from there I rebooted the system. I then powered it on as normally and it worked.
I'm thinking all that work was just a way for time to pass and let the device cool itself.

plugged in(generates heat) under a pillow(heat insulation).. not a wise idea, actually a very dumb idea. sounds like your battery overheated, i dont think tbe cpu would overheat before the battery. battery overheats at 60C, cpu overheats at 100C.

if i leave my phone charging on the couch cusions, it gets warmer than letting it charge while on my table, because the couch cusion insulates better, keeping the heat from escaping from below the phone. if i cover the phone from both sided with insulation, im sure that it would eventually overheat the battery. plus right now its warmer, outside and in my home, so it warms up faster and cools down slower.
Charging under your pillow and sleeping on your head on that same pillow isn't really a good idea.1st it isn't recommended because its harmful to your health since your phone transmits radio waves. Did you rest your head on the same pillow? I agree, the pillow trapped heat of the phone.

My phone has serious temperature problems... If I surf in the internet and Facebook then my S4 is almost always at 40°C . When playing games then it can reach over 60°C (where the CPU is under the screen, measured with optical IR thermometer) It randomly starts heating up in my pocket till it is so hot that I cant hold it in there anymore.
Battery life is around 8 hours with LIGHT use!
I bought my S4 on first may and that problem appeared after summer holiday.
In November I sent it to warranty, It took them like 20 days and they did basically nothing to it. I haven't had any time to send it back there because I need my phone.
Yesterday I put it in a warm glove mining Dogecoins using AndroMine (android CPU/GPUminer) with charger connected
After 15 minutes it was at 67°C and battery was down to 30% form 97%. About 5 minutes later I heard a vibration, it had turned off and it didn't boot anymore. I was very happy, because I thought I manged to burn it down. Unfortunately it booted after cooling down . Now the battery life is even worse...
I'm thinking of putting it mining in oven... oven at 50°C I know that S4 has temperature protections but sill it might work. And the battery inside definitely doesn't like heat, so it might pop .
If I mange to burn it then I will get warranty replacement!
All crazy ideas to burn it down are welcome !!!
Sounds like a defective battery. See this thread

The thing is that my battery serial is YS1D420JS/2-B
And how can defective battery make phone become hotter?
