[Project] ---> THE Guide <--- - XPERIA X10 General

hi everyone,
I made this thread to prepare for starting a new thread in the xperia x10 Forum, the thread will be called "THE Guide"
In Case you are wondering why i made a Project thread about it, that is the way i want that thread to be it can't be done by one member, So i need your help
WHY ?
i am tired of new threads people make about very old problem that were solved millions of times, every forum have one of these thread and we shall make this one the best one.
IDEA
it will include everything we can imagine,
My view is like this:
- 1st Post will be the Index, it will contain links to the different parts of the guide
- the next for example 2 pages, each post will be about a different topic, example:
--> Root Post will contain links to differnet rooting methods, FAQ, known issues, etc
--> ROM post, will contain links to ROMS - if any -, Dev in Progress, etc
i hope you get the idea..
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO:
- this thread will be always fresh and updated, and i can't make that alone, my time won't allow me to manage more than the index post and at most one other topic
- Anyone willing to join this epic Guide, write in this thread and tell me what topic you want to handle
- Any ideas about the topics are always welcome.
- you should have a decent amount of posts, etc.. ( i can't allow someone with 1 post to take part in this, sorry )
Posiible Topics that i came of till now:
- Branding/Debranding
- Rooting
- Market issues
- Battery problem
- themes, and related Howto's
- Dev tools, and related progress ( i think someone should arrange that for new Devs coming to help )
( those what came in my mind in just 2 mins )
BEWARE: THIS IS NOT THE GUIDE THREAD, AS SOON AS THERE ARE ENOUGH PEOPLE AND WE ARRANGE WHO WILL DO WHAT, I WILL CREATE THE THREAD.
so for now lets here what you guys think about it.

Hey OP, just wanted to know, can we post news articles over here as well? If so, I'm a pretty keen observer of all the x10 news(a la Google alerts ) so I wouldn't mind handling that. Let me know
Edit: I just remembered there's already a section for that in this forum... linked in the post above mine. maybe we should ask the mods before we do anything

i will, to make it more organized i'll list everyone who apply here and will pm all at once when we are enough

Ahww ok, sorry bro

Good Idea. I just read PiLOT's post and I really do think we need to help people out that are as clueless as I was when I got my X10
I'll volunteer myself for getting the theme related stuff together. If nobody has already I'll get a list of the most important threads/how tos together.
Should I just post a list here and keep updating it?

HELP NEEDED FOR NOOB THREAD! Please read all of this, then decide if you will help!

**DO NOT POST ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD AT ALL, PLEASE READ THREAD, THEN INSTRUCTIONS** PLEASE READ AT LEAST ONCE, THEN DECIDE IF YOU WILL HELP OR NOT.
Do to the success of the "General PPC Question" thread at the top of this page, and the amount of members, from noob to seniors, that are willing to support any cause that will stop unnessicary posts, I have created this.
This is a work in progress, but here is the concept. This thread will list every imaginable question you can think of , that may be asked by a nooby, or any member, and give the best possible answer. There is no other thread like this, and it will need help from all of you genius members.
In here will be the answers to question such as,
*What is a ROM
*What is G.U.I. or Graphical User Interface?
*What is MortScript?
This may seem unnessicary, but it's not. This is the most popular section in this forum, and will not stop being the bombing ground for every question and thread that hits this site. So why not cut the problem off before it even lands as a new thread. So heres what I need from you.
If there is a TOPIC you would like posted, or if you have the exact answe to a question posted here , please PM me. Put the question you would like to see listed, and the exact answer, and label it , "Question".
Afte a couple of days, this thread should be jam packed with questions and answers.
At least give it a try.
INSTRUCTIONS:
*MAKE NO POST WHAT SO EVER ON THIS THREAD, ALL QUESTIONS WILL HAVE THERE OWN SPECIFIC THREAD AND THREAD NUMBER, AND WILL BE LISTED IN AN OVERALL GLOSSARY FOR EASY FINDING.
*PM ME THE QUESTION (ex: What is a ROM? , What is MortScript?) FOLLOWED BY THE EXACT ANSWER. NO GUESS OR YOUR EXPLANATION. TRY TO WORD IT WHERE IT CAN BE UNDESTOOD FROM A NOOBY POINT OF VIEW, AND MAKE SURE IT IS RIGHT. THE SIMPLEST QUESTION YOU CAN THINK OF MAY BE THE HARDEST FOR NEW USER, SO USE YOUR IMAGINATION.
*LABEL THE PM, QUESTION FOR NEW THREAD
*I WILL DO THE REST, AND THIS WILL BE UP AND RUNNING WITHING 48 HOURS AND JAM PACKED WITH HELP FOR EVERYONE.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Give this a try. No one thought the General PPC Question Thread would help or make a difference either, but look at how it is growing. So at least give it a try. The worst that could happen is you help some noob with an answer, and stop a thread from starting to find out what a rom is!

I agree. I mean, congratulations on your stickied post - it's already helped me and a lot of others but isn't this a little extreme? It seems that you want to condense the entire forum into one thread. People would be searching within your thread rather than within the forum...
This thread is a decent idea and commendably well intentioned, but I tend to agree that the Wiki is the place for this.
However, this begs the question as to whether the Wiki is included in the standard search facility. If it's not, it may explain why some users claim to have searched but failed to find the answer. Equally, if it's not, perhaps it should be, if technically feasible.
The issue seems to be around the simplistic and repetitive nature of some queries. I see three main underling causes:
- People come here looking for help because they have exhausted other avenues, however basic those avenues may be. There is an inevitability to some people approaching this in a clumsy fashion and there isn't much we can do about it other then close the site or accept it. A little gentle education can help too - we all started somewhere and we have all probably made the same mistakes at times!
- Failure to search; this is inexcusable but inevitable and there isn't much we can do about it. No matter how accessible the information is made, if you are lazy, scared, in a hurry...or possibly just stupid, they will not find it
- Efficiency of the search tool. Can't comment overly, but it does sometimes seem like feast or famine in that one either gets too many hits to be useful or too few. Is there anything that can be done to make the search tool more intelligent, search more widely, or more specific about what it has found and where, e.g. 'this' from the Wiki, 'this' from the Forums, etc?

The first few times it is acceptable, but when the question has already been asked and answered, it gets boring for everyone, and just clogs up the forum with avoidable clutter.

Somewhere with info (such as the wiki) will at least reduce peoples time wasting...
I think this thread is a little too far, but there are alternative systems (the wiki for example) that will be easier to use...

These threads are a great idea, but I think it would be a better idea to make a forum specifically for questions, and nothing BUT questions.

Polaris ppl: Please Vote>>>MODERATOR! Please lock "HTC Polaris tweaks and tips.."
Seriously, guys, the "HTC Polaris tweaks and tricks" is completely out of control and ruining our Polaris forum. Issues that should be posted in general, or that deserve a new thread are all being posted in the tweaks and tricks thread. It has over 890 replies as of date! Its impossible to read, and a lot of good information and good answers to questions are getting lost in it.
Please, please, can a moderator lock just extract the original tweaks and tricks and lock the thread.
I've even included a poll so that we Polaris ppl can vote on the issue.
completely agree, i follow this forum almost everyday, but I never look there, it's too big a mess for me!!
good idea!
My god please do this!
all the usefull post (of the ts) should be putted in a new locked topic so you get 3 or 4 post with only usefull information!

The thread is a mess, it served it's purpose but has now become too cumbersome: remove the sticky and let this thread drift off into history.
As said above, we need a new page with the final list of Tweaks and Tricks, to be locked and linked to from the Wiki page.
The Polaris part of this site is completely amateur compared to some of the other areas I been on before - it's like it's still being treated like a beta product rather than the full production product it is now. Lots of people are running around developing different versions of the same things with very minor differences and no one wants to collect and document things in any standardized or useful manner. Unless you read every post in every thread you risk missing some valuable setting and having a system which can't do everything you need.
It would be a dream to have a wiki page with links to official roms, cooked roms, radio roms, utilities, tweaks and issues; with every thread linked from the wiki being no longer than one page in length. Strict enforcement and removal of off-topic posts would help.
It's great that everyone is working on developing continuously improved versions on a theme but if nobody builds-up the knowledge base around it then most of these efforts won’t get to the people who need them.
agree with you guys .. at 1st I found it useful because I knew where to look (at what pages) if I wanted to find anything .. now If I wand to find some new tips I have 2 read the thread for 2 days to see there are no new news.
If you could do something to improve the meaning of that thread if would be GREAT. If not, close it and remove it from "sticky" threads list.
cheers
IMO the thread is still useful, I vote for "let it open"
Why don't U just use the board function "Search this thread" to find your
solution?
I have to agree to Lock the thread - even though im relatively new to the forums i have been coming here for a very long time.
Additionally its not just that thread but a couple of the others too. TAKE BEPE'S Rom thread / and Udk - You have to go into them to see if any updates have been carried out - Bepe's says 0.65 , however 0.67 is available. New rom should = new thread!
In general it needs a clean up.
Thread is very usefull, but has become monster. It contains many usefull tips & tricks (as intended) and a lot of questions which are obscuring answers. I'm aware that without questions there would be no answers...
As I altready suggested there, it needs cleaning up... and there's no way you can search "iGO", for instance...
well guys..!
Who can make new thread ?
If some one here can make new thread beter than old one.I will lock it
Cheers..!
It voted for close it. I think a Tips and Tricks thread should not contain questions. Only the answers to questions, asked in other threads, should be put in the Tips 'n Tricks thread, as a kind of summary. Else it should be called the Ask-Everything-You-Want-And-Write-Anything-You-Like-In-This-Thread-So-It-Becomes-Unfindable-thread.
why do we even need another thread? can't this one just be closed and we use the forums as normal, creating a thread for an individual subject as and when we need to - I don't see the point in closing it just to start another one...
Someone could create a wiki out of the old thread and leave it at that, or just leave it there for peeps to look at/refer to when needs be.

Mod-connect.

Well, the rules to abide by in this forum...Hope to keep every member in there safe.
Use the Smartphone General forum for GENERIC posts, hacks, tutorials, questions!
If you have a question / tip / hack / trick also applicable to (most) other Smartphone models, please PLEASE post it to the brand new General Smartphone forum. Few Smartphone users check out the forums of other Smartphone models and, therefore, your questions / tips / other stuff will be read by a LOT more people if you post it to a general forum than in just a model-specific one.
As has already been pointed out, everything should be posted to the new General forum that isn’t ONLY related to the particular model. Some examples of what should be posted to the General forum and what should stay in a device-specific one:
* posts like “the HTC Opal has a very bad-quality Camera" should stay in the device-specific Opal subforum because it’sonly the Opal that is affected by this problem. The same stands for problems with the bootloaders of a given model or specific ROM upgrades, ROM versions, unlocking etc. only applicable to a given model (and nothing else).
* posts like Live Messenger CAB’s , OpenVPN hacks hacking etc. should go to the General forum because these hacks, information etc. can be used on (almost) ALL Smartphone models.
* if you have a question that you feel can be answered by other Smartphone users, do NOT post it to a device-specific forum, but to the generic one. Generic questions are “What Web browsers should I use?”, “How do I configure my e-mail client?”, “How do I install Flash on my device” and so on. ONLY post questions like “What about ROM version X.Y for Smartphone model XY”, “How do I enable HSDPA in model XY”, “Where should I get WM6.1 for model Opal”, “I have problems with the Camera of my Opal”, “My Opal’s buttons are hard to press” – that is, questions you’re absolutely sure about belonging to model-specific forums.
Also, make sure you continuously monitor the forum because I’ll post a lot of brand new Smartphone-related information in there.
Again and again,
1. POST ALL your questions / tips / hacks in the General forum if you find it can also apply to / answered by the owners of other Smartphone models
2. frequently visit the new forum for new tips / questions and, last but not least, my tutorials / roundups
thanks to Menneisyys for the rules...

Bad show!
What are the other members doing???We don't have only Jagan and Pajerm as the heart and soul of this forum...We had a really good team of beta testers (for all ROMs)..A good Italian discussion thread(later asked to continue and translate in English)...I guess the device had a shorter life span...May be people upgraded their devices or are rather not interested to develop due to limited functionality of the device...Bad show guyz...

You really can't blame others for this, with a lot of new devices coming out, it just show that Opal is really limited with regards to its hardware capabilities. *sigh* I just learned how to flash my Opal recently, but I guess it ends here

The Opal does have some limitations and i think all the members must have migrated out to a new device and forum!!!
I have an idea, look at my signature, if what I wrote goes against the rules of the forum then tell me and I remove everything at once.
Good little phone
Yes, the Opal might be a bit older, but I have found that it is a great little phone especially when you upgrade the ROM to a WM6.5 or greater.
It doesn't have a large screen or isn't as fast as some of them out there, but if you don't have a data plan or don't do much on-line and want a good Pocket PC / Cell Phone it works just fine.
And I for one will be happy to help Pajerm get another Opal.

New life for opal?
Looks like we're gonna see new ROMS again in the future. Keep it coming guys, I wanna help with the testing

Request to the devs, new version, new thread

Please start a new thread when you put out a new version of your rom.
By the time the second version comes out for the really good roms it's impossible to follow all the issues as there can be upwards of 1000 posts in the thread. Starting at the back doesn't help because of all the "how's your battery life?" posts. Then again, maybe that's the problem.
Anyway, I REALLY appreciate the work you guys do on these roms and kernels. I just wish it were easier to follow the flow of development.
Thanks for listening.

Well it doesn't have anything to do with developing..
Although you do make a pretty good point, it is a LOT easier just to update the thread with a new download link & change log.
It would also cut down on a lot of clutter in that section.
If you are running an older version of what that dev posted, you shouldn't post bugs unless it didn't say it was fixed in the newest version of what they posted.

Master, your thread specifically is almost impossible to follow because of the almost 10,000 posts in it.
The easy fix to your update example above:
1) go to post for last release
2) hit edit
3) Ctrl-A to select all and Ctrl-C to copy
4) Hit Cancel
5) Open new thread and Ctrl-V to paste
6) edit pasted text and hit preview
7) review the post and make corrections as needed
8) hit submit and wait for the flood

I think it's more of a "Let's see whose thread can get the mot posts" type of thing. Because it actually makes little to no sense to update a thread from months ago that is full of non-existent issues and then ask people to search through that thread as if the answer is supposed to jump out at them. Luckily I have given up on trying to read threads.

Well first, you cannot delete your own threads nor close them.
There is a search button in the threads for a reason also..
I guess it could be a thing to get people into saying what version they are on when they report a bug/ask a question..
Just a thought
I have to say I kinda agree with the OP, although obviously from your point of view its just making work.
I run your Axura 2.1 ROM Master, and was feeling a little lag from it here and there. I was looking for one piece of information... "can I use OCLF with this ROM"... had bad experiences with Voodoo in the past.
Man, it was no mean feat to find this out. Eventually, I put the new Voodoo kernel on my phone and its running flawlessly (utterly love this ROM by the way man. Seriously. Better than anything out there by a royal mile), but it was a hugely frustrating process to figure out whether I had any other options. To get a definitive answer. Just to find something simple.
I've often asked people direct questions in PM, and got no response, or at least an unhelpful one. As a technical guy, but not a developer, any questions I have are usually pretty specific, and not newbie in nature, and finding the answer is a massive problem. One of the biggest hurdles to this is 1000+ post threads.

Personally I think the old threads should remain anyhow. They help to keep the versions separate, not everyone upgrades right away. People should post in the correct thread for their version, but right not this is not possible.
Also, the old, dead thread clean up is not the responsibility of the OP, but of the forum admin. I have owned and run many forums. I have used ikonboard, vBulletin, Invision Power Board, MyBB, Phorum, phpBB, and my favorite Simple Machines Forum. All of them have in the administrative back end the option to cleanup old dead threads with no posts with a set time frame.
Problem is rom gets updated, 300 posts of "OMG Thank You, flashing soon!!!!"
They don't care.. The only thing they care about is getting donations. Higher post conts = more attention = more donations. In summary: they do not care

Sorry, gotta call BS on this one. Based on recent events I can guess that you are speaking at least generally if not specifically to Master, and he already addressed (IN THIS VERY THREAD) his thoughts both for and against. In fact so far he has been the ONLY developer to come forward and state he would be willing to do this.
Your statement does not contribute in any way to the discussion at hand, and I personally to not appreciate anyone that posts in running threads just to flamebait and be defamatory. Please check yourself.
I think an easier and better solution exists.
The problem for us the users is that we cannot find which posts relate to which rom version, correct?
The problem for developers if we choose to open a new thread for every release is to follow all 20 threads.
An easy solution would be to have one thread for the rom as it is now, BUT with every update of the rom (and the first page) the developer can add another post with update details at the end of his thread (basically a simple post reply) and put a link to it on the first page in the change log.
This way people viewing the change log will have links to the parts of the thread that discuss that update, while developers won't have 20 threads to maintain.

Whether you are following 20 threads or the same number of posts in 1 thread the work is the same because you have to reply either way. Also, all versions in 1 thread plus people still using old versions leads to confusion, and confusion equals having to clarify which ultimately means more posts. If you subscribe to the threads and use proper subjects for the thread you should get an e-mail that not only tells you there was a reply, but to which thread version and you can prioritize your replies, ie. Current version I will answer that now, 3 versions back and he can wait until I am done with what I am working on or else he can upgrade. Also since the older threads will get posted to less frequently the chance of multiple posts after the e-mail is less, so if the question is something that was fixed in a newer version you can decide it is not even worth your time to reply. As a developer you can not do that now because there may be many replies after the one that triggered your subscription e-mail that you will not see until you visit the forum.
Trust me, I have run a BUNCH of forums, and 1 thread per version is a better idea for many reasons you have not even thought of yet. If you fully think it out you will realize that it is actually easier to keep track of the 2 or 3 most resent threads people actually pay attention to then try to track the last 2 or 3 versions in 1 thread.
I've run a few big forums too so I do know what im talking about.
With 95% of users upgrade to a newer version of the rom there would be no need to keep the threads for the old roms because no one will write there. But you can't delete them. So instead of having 20 threads with 20 roms, we will have 400 threads for 20 versions of those 20 roms if we follow your idea

[Q] Can newbies have directly support from other xda-users?

I am a newbie to Android operating system. As many other newbies, I got a lot troubles and puzzles when using my android phone, recreating themes or modifying ROM, etc... Then I have to post a new thread on forum and waiting for an advice. Sometimes it takes a lot of time just for a easy bug fix.
Therefore, I wonder if some experienced android users can leave their gmail address so that newbies like me can add as buddies in g-talk in order to asking for advices in some cases.
Thanks.
Best advice I can give you is to start here reading the Noob bible, read read read, then once you are more familiar with the phone, I would join one of the developers personal website forums. The people in there can and will give you advice, you can look into EDT forum, TW etc. All these groups have a varying level of skilled people in each of their respective website forums. But, before launching over to one, you need to have some education, and understanding so you can ask useful questions.
Good luck............. android is a great platform

99% of the time, all the "easy bug fixes" that you're referring to have already been addressed and resolved. I have been at this a while and have yet to start a new thread because my questions have either already been asked/answered, or I just figure it out myself. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people asking legit questions, but members starting new threads about common questions is a little irritating and shows a lack of effort in my opinion.
My bad - accidental repost.
Yeap I see, thanks a lot. ^^
if you need help feel free to pm me, no offense but i dont like leaving my email address around especially with everything i use it for. I generally check my XDA pms atleast once a day, keep in mind that i don't have time to walk you through everything step by step which is where the noob guide comes in. However i will always be willing to point you towards resources that will either instruct you on what to do unless its an incredibly difficult topic in which case ill do my best to asist.
Cheers
make a thread, pm me, ask for my number w/e I'll help you out..
