[Q] Voodoo lag fix - Still lagging/hanging? - Fascinate General

Just wondering how many people are still seeing significant lag or freezing even with Voodoo installed? Mine was was hanging and lagging pretty bad over time and uninstalling apps, doing battery pulls was not helping for long. Didn't seem specific to any particular thing either.

Yes but there is no writing to system so lag there should be minimal. I was having issues too, until I figured out it was the ram tweaking app doing it.

Valid point.. I was thrown off by the OP's grammar. My initial understanding was that lag was experienced during the uninstall of apps. I see, now, that he meant that uninstalling the apps didn't help with his lag.

My culprit was http://www.appbrain.com/app/autokiller-memory-optimizer/com.rs.autokiller
Which makes me sad because I made a sizeable donation to the dev.

I miss my Nexus as well, but am happy with my fascinate. It's a superior device, just needs some froyo pushed so the dev magic can begin in earnest.
Honestly, if they rolled out an N1 on verizon, I wouldn't change, I just wish Samsung would get off their asses with the update already.

Sorry for the poor wording - I was having issues just unlocking the screen if the browser or another app had been left on screen/running when it turned off. Sometime moving from one app to another then to another would do it and sometimes just opening something like Tweetdeck or Tapatalk from the home screen with nothing else running would do it. I was getting complete hangs lasting 30-40 sec. I don't use any task killers and had pared apps down to about 6 or 7 and was still getting unbearable lag - much worse than I ever had without Voodoo.
Just my experience so YMMV - just thought we could consolidate the issue with a poll since I was seeing similar comments in various threads but no real consensus on the issue.

After you took that off did it clear up the lag issues? Because I put that on the same night you did in IRC. Might have to put voodoo back on if autokiller is what was causing it all along. Just seemed to get slower day by day without a restart but I would love it if the app was the issue

Curious about the autokiller settings you were using. I leave it on default with aggressive as secondary when my screen sleeps. Haven't had any lag whatsoever with anything. I know sometimes things are device specific, but was just curious how you nailed this as the culprit.

I was using the settings that curio put on his twitter. I know that wasn't towards me but I think Adrynalyne was using these too. But I could be wrong.

I tried Curio's settings, as well as aggressive, and one other....
I nailed it down because I froze it with Titanium, which stopped it on startup and my phone started working 10000% better. I was this || close to uninstalling voodoo as the problem.

Did you try the "optimal" setting?

The settings arent the problem. The app is.

I'm not even sure why people think they need these task killers. This phone runs like lightning with just Voodoo.

Glad that works for you. Me personally, I'd rather let an app do it. Then it can still let things in every so often without me doing anything. And the battery use is minimal in the background.
JuiceDefender works... it's a good application. The more time you spend setting it up correctly, the better it works. And having UltimateJuice is a must.
I don't believe in Taskillers as they are just taking up CPU cycles killing off applications that aren't even doing anything (read up on how Android works to understand this fully, mainly how it kills of application and how they can be open and dormant).
gonna give this a shot, thanks

Agreed on both accounts. You gotta go for UltimateJuice and I can't emphasize more that task killers really don't help. You're completely right on your points. The apps aren't doing anything. Android doesn't handle background apps poorly like a PC.

Some live wallpapers are way more taxing than others. Depends on your home launcher too.
I'm using the tw vibrant launcher and most lwps don't slow it down at all.
Mario lwp on playback mode has no real lag problems at all.
If you're using adw or launcher pro, good luck. They don't handle live wallpapers nearly as smoothly.

Unless im a complete mental....you mean to tell me that lets say you use the Pond wallpaper....that doesnt slow your launcher down? Or even slow you down when flickin through pages?
BTW Im using launcherpro set to its fastest settings.
Without the live wallpaper i ZOOM!
No, but as mentioned above, different launchers handle lwp better.
Sadly, the twlauncher handles it the best.
@pkopalek just saw your post about launcherpro having problems.....if thats the case SORRY I spoke to soon i am a TARD!

TouchWiz with the lwp flurry yields no lag in page changes or app launching. Just about a 8% extra decrease in battery throughout the day versus a static image.
good day.
I had some lag issues in the past all of them fixed by task killer or format sd card to clear out all the crap on it. Cache cleaner helps alot as well. Havent had many issues with live wallpapers only one would totally freeze my phone so I tossed it and no more issues. Been over a month since noticable lag or any freezing... And thats the truth. Take it or leave it.

[Q]Task killers?

Coming from the cliq rooted with a 2.1 rom, atk was a necessity IMO.But ive hard that task killers are not needed with froyo and that it hurts more than it helps. But ive noticed that even with atk on froyo, apps aren't being killed unless I go to settings/applications/manage apps to force close myself. Ive tried just not force closing or killing apps and ive noticed it being a memory hog and decrease in performance and battery, but thats just my own personal testing.
What's your opinion on task killers and such? do I need it or am I better of without one?

I am using "advanced app killer'. A number of stock apps will restart right after, but most others will not.
I use it right after starting up, and after closing some apps (they often keep running in background). I think this is helping materially with my battery life - which is fairly good.

is a horrible thing. the second u close an app and it instantly reopens itself your cpu shoots up 100% and you end up killing more battery by doing that.
Haven't seen the need for a task killer. I run System Panel app and what I'm seeing is the majority of the apps listed are on background and not taking up CPU power at all.
If anything, once I root, I'll probably use Autostarts just to minimize the number of apps that run at startup. But right now... not even necessary.

slow downs

hey so my gf has a desire z mostly because I convinced her android is the way to go, and she loves it, but recently she has been frustrated because every once in a while, usually when she uses the default messaging app or widget, it will slow way down and/or freeze, and take a few minutes to sort itself out, I suggested try handcent cause it may clean that up, but since then it has continued to happen, any suggestions? thanks!

Reboot with pulling the battery out? Many apps on it?
If you're unsure whats causing the slowdown, I'd download Watchdog Lite and see what apps are taking up the most CPU/RAM and see if removing or fixing issues with these apps will change anything.
I haven't done anything extra for her to it, no rooting, all she has done is the ovta 2.2.1 update and download apps, just simple ones like backgrounds, schedules/notes, and games, and okay thanks I'll try downloading that app to see

When having that version of Android I had some slow downs when using animated wallpapers, they clogged the memory also until it froze. Using normal, steady backgrounds took care of it.
I also have advanced task manager installed (free from market), it has a widget, clicking on it frees memory and speeds up the phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I like the wallpaper idea but I have heard from many places that task killers use more battery cause most apps will just start up again, but if it stops the freezing maybe it's a necessary trade off
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah, Froyo is supposed to be much better with ram management so task managers are not required. Its very likely to be a misbehaving app in the background.
Failing that, factory reset to rule out an failed ota.

Don't use task managers. They're unnecessary and like you said can hurt more than they help more often than not.
Check out an app like Watchdog, that doesn't kill anything it'll just show you if something is eating too much CPU, so you can remove or change it. Also, lots of messages or long long threads can slow it down too.
so I got her to use watch dog and she just texted me saying that it popped up and messaging was over the cs threshold, and I do think she has a ton of messages, I'll tell her that deleting them could fix it, thanks!

You can customize what the threshold is. I think its like 20% or 30% by default. Kinda surprising that very rarely happens. If she deletes all messages and it still happens I'm really not sure.

While the Sense launcher is a bit laggy and resource hungry, it sounds like the OP has something going on far beyond just Sense. Sense itself does not cause the Messaging app to lockup for minutes, and it seems to be a problem that has developed over time.
My personal preference is "System Monitor". It doesn't kill anything and does everything watchdog and a little more. It costs tho

You were previously talking about flashing CM7. If the HTC SMS app is indeed the problem, you don't need to flash a new ROM to get away from it. Yes, the HTC SMS app is not great, but neither is the stock AOSP one. I've been using the stock Sense ROM for the most part since December, with Chomp SMS and see absolutely no slow down. Plus, I've tried CM7 and other ROMs, and there is no significant affect on battery life. If the OP's GF wants to stay on Sense, its really overkill to recommend ROM flashing. Its pretty apparent from the most recent posts deleting some messages will likely fix the problem.

5000 is a bit much. If its just a case of not being bothered to delete old messages (I have the same problem, but delete in the hundreds still) I could recommend the "Delete old messages" function which will automatically keep the thread down to size.
