I've read that rooting with Gingerbreak works with the latest update, but also might erase the internal storage. Exactly what part of the internal storage might be erased? EVERYTHING, or just installed apps, ringtones, music, etc...?
Anything on internal storage, if u click on app files and go to internal storage anything there, so if u don't put apps on sd ur fine but some of its files it saves will be gone

So... basically my best bet would be to make a copy of everything i can onto my computer before attempting the root?
Yes
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
And..... another question. Is a microSD card actually required for it, or no?
I never remove my sd so I am not sure
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yes an external SD card is required. You will be prompted to have one when you first install gingerbreak. I had to go out and buy one.
just copy su file in /osh/bin with some name. your root will be preserved.

Try liberty and/or root tools by jrummy16. It seems to be the most popular way to go.

Sorry, i gotta ask... why do this? DroidX has what? 8gb internal? apps2sd is not compatible with all apps (widgets, etc), and it certainly improve performance. AFAIK it also decreases sd card life? Why? It's not for more space, it's not for performance, and it's not gonna help compatiblity, why??
I have to go +1 on apps2sd being a bad call for the X. I had literally hundreds of apps on mine. Only a few play well with apps2sd, one reason I outgrew my D1. Memory is one thing they addressed with the X. You could fill it up, but there is just no way you would fill it up with apps you actually use. There is an app called apps2sd free on the market if you want to play with it, but I promise you there is no need, and after you test it, you will see that there's just no reason to use it. I actually went through and edited the apps that automatically install to SD (such as Twidroid) so that they would install to phone.
Hi
I just had an issue of the internal memory is getting full even if I already had the applications and games installed in the memory card
But I wonder if there are any way or tips to optimize the RAM and get as much space as possible ?
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium App
Not much besides returning it and complaining the the 500.00+ phone you paid for came with 3.00 worth of storage. Im being generous saying the internal memory is 3.00 its more like 2.00

But there should be away to optimize the RAM coz its totally an clear for the internal memory to get full fast even if I just had only few apps installed. My Iphone have more apps and games installed and I never had an issue with memory

Yes there are many ways. Easiest and fastest download the app: "app to sd" from market and u can move most apps to sd card.

Flame the noob, shame on you You don't know jack until someone points you in the right direction. Sure he should have searched a little, but still.
Dude, you got good advice on the apps2sd. The real memory improvements are after you pluck up the courage to root your device, but it's pretty easy. Follow the other posts on same. Then you can check out Titanium Backup from the market, or there is another command you can run if you install the Android Development Kit but it's more techy. Stick to Titanium, it moves most of the game to SD, leaving <1Mb for each. I have loads of games installed & have 150Mb free.
Let us know how you get on...
Thank you guys. I just tried it and it freed around 120MB

If you learn how to use adb, you can try the command " pm setInstallLocation 2 ", this will force more apps to install to the SD Card and free up even more space

I'm not flaming or anything I just want to enlighten the OP.
Ram is not what you are referring to. What you are referring to is the internal storage.
Internal storage = Computer hard drive
Ram is where processes are being run atm. every time you turn off the phone the ram is cleared.
Now like many have said you can use adb and setinstalllocation2. What this will do is install all the applications on your memory card.

First of all check all the apps are on stock apps2sd. Go to settings/applications/manage applications then on the top click SD Card. It will then bring up a list of all the apps that are stock apps2sd conpatable and if theres a tick it means there already on. If no tick click the app then click "Move to SD". Instant more space.
Second uninstall the apps you use least.
Third clear your browser cache. Go to settings/applications/manage applications then scroll till you see Browser click then "Clear Cache"
Forth and finally I would root the phone and uninstall some stock stuff you won't use.
Done.

I am currently running EH06, stock/deodexed and am experiencing seemingly random reboots. I was curious to see if this issue is memory leak related, and from general RAM checking, I believe it may be. Of my available 342 MB of ram, RIGHT NOW my phone reports 241 MB taken up, I have seen that value getting up into the low 300's at it's peak, and unfortunately I haven't seen it immediately preceding a reboot.
I decided to check the memory usage from the command line, and when I run 'free' via the bash shell, of the 350400 KB (342MB) of potential RAM - which matches nicely with what the phone is reporting - I am being told I in fact have 321 MB of RAM taken up. Now I'm no Linux/Android guru, but that doesn't seem right.
So I opened up a bunch of apps, visited a couple of websites, backed out to the home screen and rechecked my numbers. I am now at 302MB/342MB according to the task manager app, but 338MB/342MB according to 'free'. Using the 'Clear Ram' button, I was able to knock it back down, but I have seen it in the past few days not drop the used RAM amount upon pressing that button...
I'm experincing similar problems , it seems every day I need to do a reeboot to keep my ram usage down cause when I first boot , let everything load ... then kill tasks I have around 180 free but after about a day when I kill tasks I have around 80 free and I need to reboot for peace of mind I don't know what it is but I hope I get fixed ....

People have had mixed results with the 3G Turbocharger script and KickAssKernel scripts. The V6 script is the one many are reporting helps with the RAM leak. I used oprion #9 MegaRAM2. This is the lastest script. You need to get Script Manager from Market. Select "run as root" then "run". http://db.tt/oUYakOc

In the world of software, there is NO random, everything has a cause. We call things random when we haven't defined the problem's pattern.
So check it out , I instaled the new eh06 plus kernel without really getting an answer as to what a kernel was and it seems to have helped I haven't been on it for 24 hours yet but I will update and let you know

The paid "Full" version of Memory Booster allows to to set (raise) the minimum RAM threshold supposedly. I just got it and will see if I change it and install and run a bunch of apps if it prevents the reboots. Huh, I got the "Full" version but the minimum RAM threshold is set in the MB RAM Optimizer app. I will change it from 15% to 35% and see if it stops reboots tonight.

I've been getting these "random" reboots with all of the GB leaks. Been looking at my logcat but I can't make heads or tails out of what the messages mean. Currently using catlog for the logcat reader, never seen anything under the lowest level "what a terrible failure" but get tons of stuff under the next level up "error".
currently running eg22.
Would love a thread detailing how to do anything with this that might help figure out what's causing these issues.

Great John, let us know. The free version is great for seeing what is REALLY using your memory. Not the little bit the stock task manager kills. Apps are constantly loading in the background even if you haven't used them in months. If you go to Task Killer in Memory Booster Lite you will see this "ninja" apps stealing your memory. This is what people keep calling memory leaks. They are real apps loading.

but i am seeing memory problems. such as maps running using a whole 6MB of ram. Think, 10 years ago, that wouldve took a supercomputer. Why are these apps running even when i dont launch them?
such as engadget, maps, telenav, THREE DIALERS TAKING UP 11MB EACH WTF I THOUGHT THERE WAS ONLY ONE DIALER. anyways yeah i usually have ~100mb free but still. when i CLOSE an app, it should CLOSE. I also shouldnt see the app UNLESS I LAUNCH IT.

If you root, you can easily store apps on external. Also, internal is partitioned into 4gb halves. One for the the ROM and the other for media/etc. Personally, I don't understand how people fill that up so quickly. I use very few apps and all my media gets stored to my external SD. I'm still sitting at about 3.5GB available on my storage side.

I understand it's portioned but I've never seen a phone require half of its internal storage. As for media, it's all going to her card. I guess if you use few apps your ok, but that's not the case with a 5 year. You shouldn't have to root for a phone to be functional with a relatively low amount of apps in use.

It came straight from Verizon as a replacement phone so all I know is that it's a refurbished phone. I cleaned up the backup assistance so hopefully that will help. I have a theory that triggered the warning and loss of functionality. We'll see. If it pops back up, it's going back to Verizon.

Makes sense since this phone is loaded with it. This is our first Motorola smartphone. Is that a Motorola issue with excess bloat? I know all phones have it but this seems like a lot considering the limited amount of internal memory.

bloat is an issue with all Verizon android phones (the bloat helps bring down the costs on the device).
one of the drawbacks to this device is the lack of internal memory. however, the bigger drawback is in the OS that prevents folks from moving apps to their SD Card.
but once I rooted, and installed a "clean ROM", I got a lot more space.
with your wife's phone, I suspect she has the latest OTA baseband (check the phone settings, if the baseband is prior to May 2013, then you are in luck - DO NOT ACCEPT the UPDATE). if the baseband reads May 2013, then your only option is to gain root access and freeze/delete the bloatware.
if space is an issue, I highly recommend to go this route. otherwise, start trimming some of the apps she never uses.
