I had to get my vibrant replaced (which is another awful, long story) and my new Vibrant is arriving soon. I have a feeling it's going to be refurbished. How can I tell?

Probably a refurb. Have you been reading the forums? Plenty of people getting swaps for no reason..
Sent from my SGH-T959
Aren't sellers normally required to identify a refurb? Look for a sticker when you open up the back.
The box
usually they come in a different non printed box. And, the yare supposed to disclose if the unit is refrub look inside behind the battery... etc
Also look at the terms of your replacement insurance in the contract. It usually will have some disclosure LIKE: we will replace with like kind new or equal.... or something like that That is contract-eeze for Refrub
They all come in a white box. That doesn't mean it's a refurbished phone or not. The stickers are usually slightly different too.

Thats not totally true. This phone is constantly backordered so they have no choice but to send out new phones in those situations. Maybe its diff fot tmobile.
If anything happened and I wanted a new phone i'd just report it lost and get one from asurion. I got two mew ones in a row from them.

refurbs are fun! if you replace your phone alot, on the 3rd time, you are eligible for a different phone. my HD2 was borked as bawls. got it replaced with refurbs, which still didn't fix anything, and now I have my shiny new vibrant having phone insurance is great
EDIT: i had my vibrant replaced already and it was a refurb, but still works just fine
i have a replacement, and i dont care if its refurb. or not. fact is it works better then 1st one i had, and as long as its a samoled screen and all specs work what difference does it make? besides once its rooted with one click lag fix the phone is blazingly fast
I got my replaced and now its still perfect after 1 month.
Getting a refurb is bad for factory warranty purposes. That is why lots of people don't like them. Manufacturers track manufacture dates by IMEI, so you can't lie to them. Buying a phone now and getting a refurb from July is bad.

not always, i received like 2 BB as a replacements till i call Asurion and complaint about how bad are both phones, then the rep apologize with me about this problems and the i received a brand new BB, that was mi own experience
I had a Hero replaced, they sent me a f**ked up one. Amazingly, I was pissed (who would have thought???). I told them to give me a new phone. They did without hesitation.

You can't. You warranty states after 30 days from purchase, they will replace defects with a refurbished phone. There is nothing you can do about it. If your refurb has problems, take it back to sprint and they should give you another one.

Stop fretting about the refurbished phone. I have gotten many refurbished phones from the Sprint store and they've always looked brand new. If you get the refurb and there is a problem with it then let them know when you get it and they'll take care of you.

how can u tell the difference between a refurbished and new phone? do they send a refurbished phone without the temporary screen protector and no box etc? I need to get my evo replaced also, and I'd prefer getting a new phone since I am paying monthly for insurance, I feel its my right to get a new un-refurbished) phone if I want a new phone, even if i have to play phone-tag and send the refurbished phone they send me, back to them. I just would like to know how to tell if they are sending me a new one or refurbished. tia.
Refurbished ones usually don't come in a box like the new ones Idk about the evo cause I didn't get it yet but I agree with you if I'm paying insurance they should give a new one not a used one that didn't work right before

I just received a refurb last friday for my launch day EVO and it was not in full working order. The Home button would not illuminate and the menu light was faded. I was pissed. I'm receiving my 2nd refurb today and if its messed up I'll be requesting a new one. Most of the time in the past my refurbs have been on point. Only once did I receive 2 bad BB and demanded a new one and they sent me one.
As for as receiving the package DD, the EVO refurb came in a small general Sprint box that looks like one they send all refurbs in. All replacements either via Sprint or Ausrion will be refurbs. Remember if you are inside your 1 year warrenty which all EVO owners are Sprint will replace it, unless of course you smashed or lost it.
BTW my refurb was a HW 0003. Same as my launch day one. I'm really curious if the 0004 version has a better screen like some say.
Interesting. My launch day Evo is HW 002. I have had the screen replaced due to dust under the glass in the upper left corner, and the camera lens cover replaced because I cracked it. Otherwise, the phone works great!

No. The phone you have now is NOT new, its used, therefore you wont get a new one back. You have 30 days to replace your phone with a new one, after that its considered used. And no, its not your "right" to get a new phone. If you get in a car accident, your car insurance company doesnt give you a new car. They fix the one you have with reproduction (refurbished) parts.

My phone is only about 10 days old and I took it to a sprint repair store cause my voicemail wouldnt update. They didn't know what to do for it so they ordered me another phone. They just called today and said it was in and that I could pick it up. I asked if it was new or a refurb and they said it was a refurb and she also stated that mostof the time a refurb works better than a new one. Anyone have any experience with this? I just don't really want to give up my 10 day old brand new for a refurb unless it's ok. Also are the screens new cause I don't have any scratches on my phones screen now and I don't want my refurb to have any. So does any one have a refurb now that works great? Thanks for the input.
I was told the actual phone is new, but the main board in it is refurbished. Not sure if this is right or not though, just what they told me at the Sprint store. Mine is a refurb, but it works great... also, if I remember right, you can check to see if it's a refurb or not, just can't remember how.

Take it to where you bought it and tell them it is defective and you want to exchange it. Under the 30 day guarantee they should exchange it for a brand new one for free.

If this is true, then my recondition status on the refurb they gave me yesterday says "Status: NO". Total call time onthe phone is only 7m out and 11 min in. With a total of only 8 calls in and out. lol awesome
I'm on refurb epic and all I could is my phone looked, smell and to me is new. I wouldn't worry about it.
Yeah your right I guess as long as it works ok and looks new. It's just we paid so much for these phones and something is wrong with it and it's not our fault I just think we should get a new one.
I believe your 30day time period restarts each time you get a new phone. Personally I would make them exchange it for a new phone. If you wanted a refurb you would have paid refurb prices.
As for refurbs "working better than new phones", I guess this could be the case if they fixed a defective part and you have less of a chance of that part failing again.
I've had pretty good luck with refurbs. But if I had the option to get a new exchange I would do that instead.
I am wonder if they make recondition status to show NO even if it is not since that is their phone and they can make showing anything they like.

After 30 days of purchase of the original phone a refurb will be used unless one is not available. The 30 day does not start over after an exchange. Anything within 30 days would be new.

It's hit or miss on the refurbs. I'm on my 4th Epic atm. The original had the radio go bad after a month. The second one that was a refurb lasted about 60 days then the charging port went bad. The third one which looked to me to be brand new (still had all the stickers on the chrome) locked and froze in the store as soon as it synced with google. I just got the forth today, fingers crossed so far so good.

yes same would love a new in the box and a refurb
I got a refurb 004 a few months back and if anything, its better than my 003. I think 99% of the problems are gone now
I don't remember the hardware version I had before. It probably was 3. I got my phone the day it was released.
Maybe a month or less now that I got a 4 refurbished. I worried at first but I haven't had any problems with it. I did check the refurbished at the store and the screen was defective. The tech offered to put my original screen on the refurbished since it was defect free. I've been happy ever since. I'm using it quite often, with the sprint extended life battery, even though I have a shift. The large screen is easier to read stuff and the battery easily lasts me all day with like 40 to 50% left when I go to bed.
I wouldn't be afraid of the 4; just thouroughly test the 4 before walking out of the store.

I thought the 0004 revision was better than the 0003? Am I wrong on this, or did they screw something up with the next revision? I own a 0003 myself.
All your gonna lose out on is a little bit of compatibility here and there but I think that is minimal now since the 0004 stuff has been included in most everything now. If your lucky you might get a brand new one anyways if the amount of refurbs they have available is dwindling. I got a replacement for my launch day Evo, and the one they sent me was an 0003. This was back in July but I checked the refurb state through the ## code (I dont remember which one) and it ended up being a brand new phone because it hadn't ever been activated or refurbished.
Well, sprint is going to give you a refurb, there is NOTHING you can do about that. However, if you are unhappy with the quality of the refurb, you have every right to take it back. Either call customer service, explain your problem with it, and tell them you want another one. Or go to a repair center and see what they can do for you. Do NOT just settle for equipment that's broken, or doesnt work the way it should.

you would be lucky to get a 004 evo. but more than likely it will be a 002 or 003.

Use it. If it screws up, exchange it for another one.
How many of you get pretty mad when you spent 400 to 250 on your evo and it was brand new outta the box and you babied it and then you had the light bleed or b spot effect on your screen 3 or 4 months later and when you take your phone in they swap it out calling it a new one thats a refurb kinda wish they give you a brand new one that had all the issues fixed dont you for the amount you paid for?
what do you guys think?
I buy my phones from bestbuy and use their insurance so if my phone messes up then they just replace it with brand new one. They don't use referbs. Just fyi for later buys. They also have buy back program. So basically when I upgrade next Jan they will be paying me for my next phone.

not all ways true last phone i had they never replaced it just wanted to keep sending it out and have it fixed and handing me a pos loaner
my first evo started to restart randomly, first thing the sprint rep did was do a hard reset and format the sd. I had a feeling that would not fix it and in fact the problem only got worse. When I took my EVO back the second time, they ordered me a "new" phone. The next week I was able to go pick it up. Soon as i got home i noticed 4 b-spots 3 of them are horribly distracting. Im procrastinating going back to the store cuz i am tired of the run around every time i go in. One thing that is weird to me is that i supposedly have hardware version 4. shouldnt the b spots be fixed by now on this version?

Only Novatek screens exhibit the "b spots", and H/W 0004 has been using Novatek screens along with Epson. So some unlucky 0004 owners have the crappy LCD panels.

Yes, I completely agree that it sucks getting a refurb. But the truth is, your phone is NOT NEW ANYMORE. It's 3-4 months old, making it USED. Sprint should NOT have to give you a brand new phone to replace your USED one.
That being said though, I have had a few bad refurb evo's. But, I just take it back to sprint store, or call CS. I explain that while I understand I will get a refurb, the phone should be in good physical and working condition, as my last phone was. Then they either give me another refurb, or a new model for the inconvenience.
I don't mind as long as it works and I've had no problems with mine. I too am normally nervous about refurbs, only because I've had bad - and numerous - refurb issues with electronics. But as long as it works I couldn't care less.

I don't know what planet you're from but that's never the case with Best Buy. They will ALWAYS try to repair your phones which means sending it in for 2 weeks while you get stuck with a crappy loaner for the mean time. If it is not repairable, then they'll provide you with a new unit as long as they don't have something that has been returned to them in working condition.
Sprint will at least attempt to fix your phone on the spot so you're not wasting so much time and then send you a refurb (some times new devices).
I have recently had bad experiences with Sprints refurbs but kept exchanging it until I was 100% happy (3rd try) with no questions asked.
BTW, Best Buy's insurance is $10 a month, while Sprint's is $7 (30% less). Also, BB's insurance DOES NOT cover lost/stolen phones (not even if paying $100 deductible), Sprint does.
Done...
I talked to the manager at the sprint location I did my warranty swap at and told him I only wanted a new evo. Explained my side, waiting in line on opening day, etc., etc. and he agreed. So there are other ways....even at Sprint.

My last replacement was a refurb with a cracked case and a weird bright spot on the screen.
I called 15 minutes after opening the box and Asurion promptly sent me a brand new one.
I wanted a brand new one too and Asurion could not guarantee it. I got a refurb and often wonder if it has been better than my original would have been. I had my original 3 weeks and cracked the screen
I dropped my phone and shattered the screen today. I have placed the claim with Asurion, wondering if anyone has had a claim recently and if they received a new or refurb phone? Also if the phone was received with the newest, i.e. unrootable, software?
Thank you in advanced.

WTF? Mine was definately refurbished because it had scum and dents in the outer casing!
Other than cosmetics it came with 2.2 and rooted it just fine.
Refurb if they have any, new if they don't.
I received my phone today and it was a refurb. Rooted fine, but still a refurb.
Asurion put out a communication a couple weeks ago that due to low supply chain (which has been ongoing), they were shipping new in box.
I haven't heard anything changed recently, but seemingly the supply chain has been restored, so refurbs are going out again.
I have received 3 Phones from Asurion, yes, they love me...haha. Anyway, if you get a refurbished one as I did. Dont accept it. Call them back, tell them that you refuse it. Ship it back, and get a new one. Although it may take more time, it was worth it to me to recieve a new one, the one they sent was if far worse shape than the one I had before It got broken..
