What kind of files?
You meant system.ext2 instead of zImage?
No i think i need the zimage i need to add files to the proc directory i can so it within the build useing terminal but have to re do it every restart because zimage is a virtual machine and re installes every time

we all know that we can use swapper and etc to set a swap file on sd. but if i push the file to the system/media(it was rom file path! i use df to check it out) , i cant load the swap anymore ,even change the path by editing user.conf and swap.conf ...
the question is , can we put the swap file to rom , and load it to use?
sorry for my english~
I ran everything listed below that I got from another post, but I cannot get android to run when I use the system.sqsh file. I can get it to work from the system.img file but I want to run 1.6 and I cannot find one in the .img format. What am I doing wrong?
Instructions for booting android.
Files to download:
basefiles-xxxx.zip
default.txt
haret.exe
system-xxxx.img or system-xxxx.sqsh
resources.zip
updated zImage-xxxx
updated rootfs-xxxx.img
If you are updating clear the root of your sdcard of any old android related files by moving them to a seperate folder or deleting them. If you are changing system images make sure you rename or backup your old data.img it might not be compatible with new or different builds.
Copy all files to the root of your sdcard.
Extract the basefiles.zip and resources.zip (resources.zip is not needed for donut) to the root of your sdcard.
Rename any updated files to there short names. For example if you downloaded zImage-24-10-09 rename it zImage etc...
Edit your default.txt for your panel type and resolution. There are comments in the file that will guide you.
Correct resolutions for different builds:
Donut/Tattoo: mddi.width=240 mddi.height=320 lcd.density=120
Ion/Cupcake: mddi.width=320 mddi.height=427 lcd.density=160 (this is the most common and can be adjusted)
Hero/Rogers: mddi.width=320 mddi.height=480 lcd.density=160
Rename the system image that you downloaded to system.img or system.sqsh depending on what file extension is already there. For example if you downloaded system-08-08-09.img rename it system.img. If you downloaded system-tmo-ota-drc92.sqsh rename it to system.sqsh.
After everything is setup execute haret.exe and tap run.
Any other questions post them in the correct xda thread for the build you are running.
Which build are you trying? Ion/cupcake should be 240x320 also.
I am using system-tmo-ota-drc92.sqsh, and I get this error when trying. The error I get is Failed to find system.img on SD Card /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control t/ #

put everything into a folder called android on your sdcard make sure your rename system-tmo-ota-drc92.sqsh to system.sqsh
Thanks it worked great. I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of days.
I had the same problem...thanks jamezelle
Hi,
I really like all the Android builds that use the Desire ROM as I really like the HTC Sense. However, my language isn't really supported there (The fonts exist but the formatting is bad).
I have some files that should fix the formatting, but they are meant for the original HTC Desire and are installed by going to the ROM Manager/Recovery Mode and then choosing an option called: "Install Zip from SD Card".
Since I can't go to this ROM Manager nor get into Recovery mode with the HD2 Builds I am looking for an alternate way to change the system files on the Android build I am using.
The thing is that I am having difficulties doing so.
At first I tried using EStrongs File Explorer to get root access and copy over the new files I want to change but it gave me an error that it failed.
After I couldn't make it work I started looking for ways to open and edit the system.ext2 file in Windows.
I couldn't find any program or driver that would let me change the files, but only view them so I decided to install Linux and do it from there.
I used VMware workstation to install Ubuntu on my system.
On Ubuntu I mounted the system.ext2 following the mentioned instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8001443&postcount=8
It mounted okay but it said there was 0 bytes free when I tried to overwrite the files I wanted to change.
In addition it gave me permission errors, the error was that I did not have permission to copy the files.
I am not that familiar with Linux and I tired googling for answers but couldn't find anything useful.
I would appreciate if anyone can explain how to do it, or direct me to somewhere with more details as I'm kinda stuck at the moment.
The files I wanna change are:
/framework/framework.jar
/app/.DS_Store
/app/Gallery3D.apk
/app/Mms.apk
And a few font files to /fonts
Thanks a lot!
It is best to mount the ext2 file as you suggest but instead of trying to modify the file, copy the contents into a new folder and use the genext2fs command to recreate the system.ext2 file!
Hey man, it worked perfectly.
Thanks a lot!!
By the way, is there a recommended file size for the system.ext2? Or should I just keep the original size?
Is it worth setting it bigger? Will it benefit somehow?
I've compiled and installed a modded kernel. I'm trying to figure out how to load AOSP compiled binaries. I've tried using adb flash_image system /sdcard/system.img, but I get "failed with error: 6." Does anyone know what this means or how to load system.img on a Galaxy Tab from VZW? I'm working on reactivating the phone dialer...
the galaxy tab has nothing like fastboot, so its pretty hard to flash it! but u can try to overwrite a stock factory.rfs with the files from ur system.img and flash via odin!
That sounds like a great idea. However, I'm trying to figure out how to put the vendor specific drivers in the system.img, which is mountable and editable. If I could get my hands on an original stock system.img, that'd be awesome.

As far as I know, the Tab doesn't use mtd file system, so I don't think it uses .img extensions.
Not positive though. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
I know for a fact that img files are created as the output of an Android system build. This img can be broken apart with standard Linux tools. I've already done this. I've also mounted factoryfs.rfs to a local directory, which allows me to move apps to and from the file system.

If you have a md5 of it too, you should be able to flash it via an advanced restore in CWM recovery. That is if it is only the data that is flashed to /system. otherwise I would suggest converting it to a .fs or .tar and flash via heimdall or Odin (respectively).
What PC tools can I use to open .img files in a nandroid/CWM backup set?
Must I set up an Android ROM cooking kitchen using Virtual Box + Ubuntu, or is there another way?

use the attached unyaffs.exe to extract a system.img! simply drag the created system.img onto unyaffs.exe and it will extract alle the files in the same directory!
to rebuild, i think it might be able to create a image file in magic disk maker but im not sure

Hey Guys,
This is a small tutorial for those who want to Deodex a Single Application manually.
Deodex And Odex:
The APKs or JARs of Android contain certain .odex files whose supposed function is to save space. These ‘odex’ files are actually collections of parts of an application that are optimized before booting. Doing so speeds up the boot process, as it preloads part of an application. On the other hand, it also makes hacking those applications difficult because a part of the coding has already been extracted to another location before execution. It will make your faster theoretically even though it would be too small to notice. When deodexing the .odex file is changed to classes.dex file. Deodexing also allows us to theme and install mods. Many of the Stock Roms and CyanogenMod 7 roms are now odexed and to theme them or to add mods we need to have it deodexed. So lets learn how!!
Deodexing:
Preparation:
Hope you have Java Development Kit installed on your computer to run the scripts.Get it from: here.Select you OS from the list and download the suitable package.(We would need the full thing and not the Demo versions.)
Download the Attached .zip File
Extract its Contents to a Folder.(Extracting to a New Folder in the Desktop is Preferred for Ease)
We will name this Folder with the Extracted Contents as Deodex(or any name that you like)
Procedure And Explanations:
First of all copy the Application file that you need to Deodex.A Android Application file is the .apk file found in the system/app directory.Copy the .apk file and the .odex file of the application that you want to Deodex and paste in the Deodex folder(Folder to which the attachment's contents was extracted)
Now go to your system/framework directory and you can see a lot of .jar and .odex files in this folder and copy all its contents to the folder to which the attachment's contents was extracted.
Before doing anything more backup your rom and the application file(If anything goes wrong you can use it then)
To Deodex a application you need to specify its "BOOTCLASSPATH" files. BOOTCLASSPATH are files that contain the classes for an application or in simple language BOOTCLASSPATH files are those files that are required by a android application to run properly. They are actually those files that we have copied from the system/framework directory to our Deodex folder. There are mainly 5 BOOTCLASSPATH files for every android rom. They are: android.policy.jar , core.jar , bouncycastle.jar , ext.jar , framework.jar
All apps are dependent on these files but some apps are dependent on some other BOOTCLASSPATH files. So sometimes the problem is that we actually dont know to which of these files is a particular app dependent to.So we will have to specify all the BOOTCLASSPATH files or the .jar files in the system/framework directory. So problem solved!! Now enough with the theory class, lets proceed to the practical classes!!!!!
Open Command Prompt.
As an example we will Deodex Settings.apk
Type in this command in Command Prompt:
Code:
java -Xmx1024m -jar baksmali.jar -c :am.jar:android.policy.jar:android.test.runner.jar:bmgr.jar:bouncycastle.jar:
com.android.location.provider.jar:com.google.android.maps.jar:sonyericsson.suquashi.jar:
core.jar:corej-unit.jar:ext.jar:framework.jar:ime.jar:input.jar:java.awt.jar:javax.obex.jar:monkey.jar:pm.jar:
:services.jar:sqlite-jdbc.jar:svc.jar -x Settings.odex
Here:
-Xmx says the heap memory needed. In the above command it is given to 1024m. Sometimes deodexing may have errors due to the low heap memory. So set it to 1024m itself.
-jar baksmali.jar says the program to run baksmali.jar file.
-c says that the following files are the BOOTCLASSPATH files of the application we are deodexing.
-x says the name of the application that we are deodexing. It should end with .odex extension.
Note:
When you specify the .jar files just add all those .jar file names in the system/framework folder(only add the .jar files and not the .odex files).Ensure that you have added the .jar extension at the end of each file. Separate the .jar files with colon " : " symbol.
If you have made no spelling errors and have done everything mentioned you will get a folder named "out".
Now we have to smali the out folder into classes.dex file.
So again type in the Command Prompt:
Code:
java -Xmx1024m -jar smali.jar out -o classes.dex
Here:
-o says what the output file should me named to.Dont rename the classes.dex file into anything else.
Now you will have a file in our Deodex folder(Folder to which the attachment's contents was extracted) called "classes.dex".
Finalizing:
Now open the application's .apk file(which you were trying to deodex) with WinRar.
Move the classes.dex file that you got to this .apk file.(Just drag and drop it to the .apk file opened with WinRar.)
Now you will have a deodexed .apk file.
Note: After deodexing you will have to delete the .odex file of the particular application which you had deodexed.
I will make a guide to Odex back a Deodexed application soon!
Hope this guide helps you....
For any doubts or questions please post it here in this forum and I will try to attend to it.........

follow the highlighted lines and try again and deodexing takes time according to your computer's ram.so be patient.if you still cant do it then just upload the system=>framework folder and the app you want to deodex and its odex file and Private Message me the links. I will check whats the problem.

this can be found in the android sources site but it not so easy to understand for beginners so i made it a little easier to understand and i didnt refer that guide because all is clearly written in the android sources site.
i understood why some of you are making mistakes when trying to deodex a apk or jar file.
its because you are copying exactly the same bootclasspath files that i specified in the guide.
it varies depending on your device and your rom. So I have made some changes in my guide.some lines are highlighted in red.
follow those lines.

Specify your device and rom that you use. Are you sure that you followed what i told itself? Try it once more as I have made some more changes in the guide to help you guys.
Still if you cant do it then just copy your framework folder and the apk and .odex file that you want to deodex and pm me. I will try to deodex it.

no fotak we dont need to deodex settings.apk. We only need to deodex the .odex file but we will have to keep the apk file also in the same folder.

you will have to wait for some time when deodexing depending on the ram of your device.
what is the ram of your computer?
and do you have java 7?
