3.14 T-Mobile Stock ROM PRO's and Cons - HD2 General

I wanted to start this thread to have all of the good and bad of this ROM in one thread instead of peppered all over the message board.
I installed this new ROM yesterday when it was released. I was running 2.13 with 2.10 touch drivers.
Pros:
Touch Drivers are perfect. No need to run 2.10 touch drivers with this ROM.
HSDPA/HSUPA support- Added an "Advanced Network" Section in Connections that I didn't notice before. Haven't seen an "H" yet on my data.
Everything seems to run smooth and fast. Loads Albums faster.
Battery seems the same. I'll know more tonight. Not noticing any drain.
Think they made some tweaks to the Music tab because my albums list correctly in Portrait.
New Radio. Works fine for me.
Added Amazon Mp3
Shazam stock
Cons: This isn't really a con because it's probably something not related.
My local weather won't update. it updated when I first booted on the new ROM, but hasn't since. It updates all of the cities that are added, but not the local. I can even manually add my city and that updates fine.
Could be another issue? Not sure. For now I am using the clock that doesn't have the weather on it so that I forget that it's not working.
If you are HSPL flashing this via USB from your computer will NOT over write it. I ran task 29 before installing because I like to start fresh.

The only thing i have noticed is my clock is always wrong(maybe user related). Also my facebook will not update on 3g network or WiFi. Not a big deal really. This rom works awesome with Android by the way. Went all day yesterday without having to charge with minimal use. Pretty good from the 2 hours i was getting with 2.10

I have to say this ROM is just about perfect sofar other than the HTC Peep issue ive posted about in another thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814101
In general feels faster, smoother, touch screen is more responsive.

i'm about to download...hope the touch issue is fixed lol, t-mobile is sending me another unit but i don't wanna get rid of my old 1!

Well ill say this much about the touch screen, My original HD2 i got 2 days after it was released had a great touch screen. I also have the HTC capacitive stylus which worked well on it too. I never upgraded the ROM on that one because of the touch screen issues with 2.13.
I had to get my HD2 replaced 2 months ago and it shipped with 2.13. The touch screen sucked and the capacitive stylus would not work AT ALL on it. After upgrading to 3.14 the touch screen feels like it did with my original HD2 and the stylus works again too!

it's an issue with sense and your location(weather). this happened to me back in july, you just have to wait it out and it will return in a couple days ..

Facebook not updating is not a ROM issue.. its an app issue.. i heard that they will be launching an update to fix this error.

I saw your response in another thread... How do I manually switch to edge?
It's ALWAYS updated on 3G until now, so what would cause it to happen? Switching to edge sounds like a work around, which is cool, but not really the answer.
It's updating the same exact city when is manually added on 3G so i don't really understand what is different about the local weather. Would love to understand why. The idea is to look at my phone and have it update automatically and I'm not trying to rock edge all day just for this.

Anyone having problems with hiding SIM contacts? I installed BsB Tweaks, turned off "Show SIM contacts" but they still appear in my All People list.

Sorry folks, forgot to set All People/Menu/View to "Contacts"...

So what is the deal here? That totally worked. But why isn't it working on 3G like normal?

there are some 3G towers that are down at the moment and will not give you a weather update. we have to wait until they are fixed. I'm just hoping its the HSPA+ upgrade.. hehehe..

Finally enjoying my HD2
Great idea starting this thread, OP!
I haven't posted anything in a while but felt compelled to log in today and outline how pleased I am after my upgrade to the latest ROM - 3.14. It's like my HD2 has turned a new leaf altogether. I was on 2.13 prior to this (without the touch response fix posted here). After upgrading to the new ROM, the interface feels much more fluid and I am finally "enjoying" the phone (I've had it since release in the US).
My wife has an iPhone and the iPhone usage experience was always way superior. She was also never able to use my phone properly - kept bringing apps up by mistake or pressing soft buttons inadvertently. With the upgrade, however, all this has changed for the better. HD2 now has the same fluidity and all the UI improvements (over the iPhone) are finally showing their true color! I also used a friend's Android-based incredible a while back and it felt much faster and smoother in comparison to my HD2 but I am very, very happy with my HD2 now as it feels as responsive.
The only apps I have installed after the hard reboot the upgrade caused are CHT 1.8, Google Maps, Skype and Bing. No BSB, no Chainfire driver, no registry mods, etc. I'll likely stay this way but I am curious if Chainfire has made a difference for anyone.
So what has changed?
I am no expert but it seems like the video driver has received a significant upgrade. This is probably the reason why everything seems faster. E.g. with 2.13, the favorites in Opera/IE came up after a significant lag. This is a lot faster (although not instantaneous,as it should be).
Touch screen is a LOT more fluid and more accurate. Swype seems to be faster as well (I've set it to be more accurate than default). Web browsing is faster and more fluid. Apps launch more quickly. Scrolling Sense tabs is a lot faster and more fluid. My largish collection of music also loads faster on the Music tab (and I still have the same SD card). I can swipe through Outlook email previews noticeably faster now too! In short, everything I use on an hourly basis has improved.
No bugs so far (and no, I don't use SMS messaging much at all).

good advice . and you will be getting hspa+, after my weather came back i had it .

Con:
Opera 9.7 complains about 'out of memory' now. This didn't happened on 2.13. I only have 4 tabs open and js disabled too. I've opened as many as 9 tabs before and never got the out of memory problem before. It only used 4.24MB of memory according to task manager.

So you're saying that CHT 1.8 works properly on the 3.14 ROM? Others have had problems with CHT after the upgrade, but I'm not sure I want to try to get by without it.

HD2 and SWYPE freeze issue...please help/advice

Hi folks,
Am a proud owner of a new HTC HD2 device with ROM Version 1.43.405.1 (70124) WWE. The phone works wonders in all departments (calling, surfing, mailing, etc) but I have one issue since earlier today...
Situation: I installed the SWYPE software for windows mobiles. It is a great piece of software - really ask anyone who has used it - I got addicted to it within seconds to tell you the truth.
Issue: After successful installation and choosing SWYPE as the keyboard, the system works for a few minutes then eventually freezes and has to be reset.
Question: Anyone been through this mini-nightmare? I call it this because for a while I was very happy since my dream came true but it was short lived. Now I have to resist from using SWYPE and all seems ok...
Please do help me out here... I want to really start swyping on my new phone but there seems to be an issue that needs to be addressed
Is this a ROM related issue, a hardware related issue or a software related issue? WHat is the solution?
What software have you got installed on the device? Also have you installed Memmaid yet to auto clear your memory and notifications queue which can also cause lockups?
I am using Swype with no issues at all. Having said that I'm on ROM 1.48 but I don't see why the rom version should be relevant here (I could be wrong).
Will try and keep my eye on this thread but pm me if you need further help.
WB
Firsy and fpremost thanks for your super quick response.
Now, I don't use memmaid but CleanRAM, which works pretty well without issues. Not sure it's a good idea to use more than 1 memory management software. I've replied to your post using my hd2 but this time not using the swype software and guess what... no crashes.
I'm about to try and uninstal & reinstall SWYPE to restablish whether that helps...
I am getting occasional and intermittent lock ups which I have to admit I am attributing to Swype. I had it installed a few weeks back and had a few lock ups but until installing the sensitivity 3.2 CAB recently I found it hard to work with so took it off. The lock ups effectively stopped.
After installing the screen sensitivity fix I decided to give it another go as I liked the concept. This time it is unutterably brilliant, especially for longer and more complex words - staggeringly good...seriously. The speed I can manage is astonishing.
However, I'm back to experiencing occasional lock ups - perhaps one every two or three days.
I'm about to look at updating my ROM with a custom one and have no plans to ditch Swype.
I'm sorry I can't offer anything more helpful by way of a solution, but I can at least confirm that there may be an issue there. I'll report back if anything interesting happens post-ROM upgrade.
Hmm,
Don't know much about Clean Ram but I would advice a tool that cleans the ram AND the notification queues, etc.
Re Swype, are you sure you have installed the version for the HD2, ie WVGA? Also have you set Swype to be your default keyboard using a utility called Sip Change to be found here on XDA?
WB
Would really appreciate your posting the links to the mentioned versions of swype and tools required... I've just uninstalled SWAYPE and will install the correct version & required tools too as soon as you post the links and test the mobile out before going to bed.
Look in the Development & Hacking forum. Actually, better still, use this to search the whole of XDA...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598952
Works pretty well. You are Looking for "Sip Change" and "Swype WVGA". If you can't find them let me know and I will see what I can do tomorrow.

Thanks for your feedback. We seem to have a few things in common. They include...
1. Installation of SWYPE resulting in freezing the HD2 (or lockups if you prefer)
2. Uninstalling does stabilise the device HD2
Well, as far as I'm concerned there might be a problem here, but then our friend wacky.banana confirmed that swype works well on his HD2...so why ont on our's?
I have a mission...getting to the bottom of this mystery...
I can confirm that swype work great on my HD2 also, I'm runniing swype, sipchange, sense & spbshell together, and though not really stable (a reboot every couple of days) works fine most of the time. The reboots are probably not as a result of swype, it just appears it's common with windows phones, and somehting I'll have to live with. Stability is a BIG issue, especially when compared to my old iphone, in 18 months that needed a reboot less than 10 times, the hd2 needs that or more in a month.
Ok... just installed the wvga version of swype one the xda site and this text is typed... oopsswyped using the software. Now all I have too do is play with the device and find out what happens next...
Will keep you guys posted...
Thanks for your reactions so far...
Alright guys here is the next installment of my monolog... lol
The tips by wacky.banana helped so far. I've managed to install the wvga version of swype followed by the sip change tool. The result is a greater degree of stability after an initial few minutes of nutty behavior by the device. Once I rebooted the mobile things stabilized.
The first battle has been won it would seem. Now we play the waiting game again...
All's well that ends well or a delayed case of disappointment? Only time will tell.
SlidezIT... Hmmm sounds like an option but before I embark on the adventure this is a demo version that dies on you (ends) after a trial period right?
10dulkar,
Now that you have got it working I strongly suggest that you invest in Memmaid to manage your notification queue. If you have any more strange lock-ups it will almost certainly be down to that unless you have installed some incompatible/unstable software that causes you problems.
PM me if you want to know how to set it up.
WB
E Nm,
Thanks for the tip/advice. Currently the device is stable with rom 1.43 (the original that the mobile came with) and cleanRAM works wonders; all this with swype installed of course.
They say, if it ain't broken don't fix it! Enough said really...
Thanks to you all your help and wish you ask lots of fun with you mobiles and a happy new year...
I have a problem with the Swype keyboard not loading sometimes, and also locking out the little keyboard button, so I can not change my input keyboard. NOTE - the phone is operational other than this.
I am convinced it is Swype causing this, as when I have TouchPal set as my keyboard I do not get this issue - however after using Swype, it's really hard to go back to a 'tapping' keyboard, it's so SLOW. Does anyone think installing SipChange will fix this problem, or are there any similar keyboards out there that challenge Swype?
Swype is a bad idea in general for the HD2. I'm completely locked out of mine and can't even do a hard reset.
That's probably due to you installing leaked versions from other devices. You can register for a Beta release of Swype on their website, as I think they intend to release it soon as a standalone app.
i got the us hd2 from tmo which comes preloaded with swype and i can say that texts in general seem to be an issue but mostly when swype is turned on.
if i get too many texts at once and try to use the messaging app it can freeze up sense but i am able to get into the start menu.
sometimes even if just one message comes in if i type to quickly with swype it does the same.
im blaming the combo of swype and the sense messaging app
Freeze issue cause
Strangest thing.
I too love swype.
I've tried TMOUS 2.10 stock, Duttys, HTC-like swype, PPC Geeks TMOUS extracted swype.
All give me issues of freezing etc, especially when in text msgs.
HOWEVER, in TMOUS stock rom, when frozen, if I take out the 16Gb sd card, instant unfreeze???
I put in an older 2Gb sd card, and no problems!!!
Deleting application data on 16Gb sd does not help.
Am doing more experiments.

Swype is amazing .. when it works.
i have tried the v2 version and experienced issues with camera (which i can only assume are because of swype as i havent had the issue since not using that version) which stopped the cam from initialising then eventually cam resetting to defaults?? with low res and white screen when taken a picture - since no solution was available i had to hard reset (this happened about 4 times)
i then installed (and still use) the version 3.9 and the camera issue no longer exists however a really annoying bug occurs sometimes the keyboard takes a long time to work, if i go to reply to a text and the convo is quite big, swype will not let me reply untill its fully loaded the texts (im assuming this.. its very similar to what sms txting was like b4 the sms fix update) if i switch to any other keyboard i can type fine , switch back and still have to wait.
i heard SwipeIT was almost identical, and thus went and bought it (maybe i should have tried the demo) and im not impressed, swype is far superior. im used to doing the loop for repeated chars and you dont do that on swipeIT (if you do it gets confused) , swype gets 99% of what i type and swipeIT seems to not understand more than it does. however swipeIT does not have the bug for sms convo replies so i keep it installed (that and i payed for it so its staying haha)
i accidently installed v2 of swype yesterday when i hardreset and tested the sms and was so happy that the bug was gone (As i didnt realise it was v2) , im tempted to put v2 back on and risk the camera bug
rant over ha

Hero Lag

does anybody have a major problem with hero lagging. It is really annoying. I was wondering if rooting the hero can fix this problem. If not do you guys think the 2.1 update will fix it.
What ROM are you running? What apps do you normally have running in the background? Are you using a Task Killer that automatically kills apps on a set time frame? Have you tried doing a factory reset/wipe to see if it makes a difference? And finally, where do you see the lag the most? Is it in a particular application, or are you judging the "lagginess" based on moving back and forth from your home screens in SenseUI?
Answering ALL of these questions will help us understand what you're seeing a little better. Your question is a little vague, and your answers will probably help you get some more support from folks on here.
Thanks!
My phone was laggy too. I rooted it and put the fresh rom on it and I saw a big improvement in overall performance. Still not as fast as my old iphone 3gs, but I would never go back. I also don't use task manager anymore. It always runs in the background and drains your battery faster.
I was having the same issue.. and I narrowed it down to Handcent(SMS) of all things..
phone was fast until I installed it.. then it ran like a dog.... then I uninstalled handcent and speed it actually usable now..
I would like to see confirmation of this from others as well..

Yeah handcent killed me, made the phone not just a dog, but a wounded dog born with 2 legs. 10x worse than the stock hero app, which is bad.
I'm running handcent, but I haven't noticed any specific slowdowns from it. It can take a while to load the main handcent screen when you have lots and lots of texts in there, but I usually clear them out when I get over 100 or so anyway.
Check to see that you have the most recent version of Handcent. I think I read that there was a performance bug related to their special "with Christmas animations" holiday release (that has since been fixed).
Also, remember to clear the boot-cache directory and reboot after upgrading apps ('rm -r /data/boot-cache/*'; reboot). The Hero has problems with caching apps after upgrades (so you aren't actually running the upgrade version). I have no idea if this was fixed in the newer ROMS. I'm running Fresh and still do it, as it only takes a sec (if you have the android-sdk and root set up).
Turning off HandCent popup notifications resulted in a substantial performance increase for me. Which is good, as I really like the features HC adds (such as voice-to-text).
I had the latest version and it was always cleared out sms wise. and I never used popup notifications.. they were annoying.. and I just got a fresh replacement of the Hero (warrantee) and its still on stock rom and Handcent still killed it.. in one day..
i have not rooted, pure stock phone. only app i think runs in background is email and loopt
I notice the lag from everything to sense UI to the clock taking 2-3 secs to update to my contacts scrolling, to text message lag, to calling even lags. like anything and everything can lag.
It all has to do with this bug in Android 1.5:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3453
I'm running AOSP 1.6 on my Hero right now and it is ridiculously fast.
So yes, I think that the 2.1 update (which hopefully will come out soon) is going to fix these issues for us.
on your location settings turn off "network location" then reboot..your lag will be gone...and make sure you have a task manager installed too and end your apps so they take over your processor
Task managers are a waste of time.

This is very true. I was running the 2.1 build from here the last few days (thought I had to revert due to missing some texts and voicemail) and it's much speedier. It uses the HTC keyboard, but it's much faster in its response, almost instantaneous. The location bug really does suck up a lot of CPU time.
Also, maybe its just me, but I think it's important to remember the kind of device we're using, the hardware involved, and what you're asking it to do. It's not like you're walking around with a quad core CPU and 4GB of RAM in your pocket, but it seems a lot of people think it should respond as if that's what it has. It's a phone, yes, and it should be able to do phone stuff quickly if possible, but look at all it can and is doing. If you need absolute speed, get a dumb phone that can't browse the web, play games, or do just about anything. It'll run just fine.
handcent never made my phone lag. The only thing that made my phone lag was HTC's battery widget. Damn thing slowed my phone down so I uninstalled it and phone is running back fast again. I still use task manager because I do notice once to many apps are open it lags. Don't care what anyone says it happens on my phone. I do have a lot of applications on ignore though.
Try disabling Location services.

I used to wholeheartedly disagree with this statement, until I read a kickass article explaining how Android actively manages memory.
Now, I also agree with this statement 100%. I don't even use my paid task manager app anymore. :/

Lag or slowdown from a 1GHz phone? WTF?!

I'm starting to feel like I been had on the HD2 1GHz SD processor. Sometimes I press the Home Key and all the keys will light up but the screen won't come on. Ill even press the Send Key, End Key or Window Key, nothing. I have to hold down the End Key and the screen will show up in a very slow fade-in sequence. Than I can slide to unlock (which is very slow as well) and the Homescreen will pop up but everything is slow or lagging, even the weather animation.
My friends Droid which is only 500MHz is blazing fast, faster than my HD2, how the hell lol? Also my 2G iPhone at 400MHz is faster too. I wasn't running a stock 8GB iPhone either, it was jail-broken on T-mobile and was filled with nearly 6GB of stuff. I had 3 pages of apps, running a custom Nexus One theme with an RSS weather/news feed on the second page and a Nexus one live wallpaper lock-screen. Although it had its share of slowdown between menus and such, it was faster than this phone.
What can I do to speed up this phone (or get my advertised 1GHz), I mean 1GHz I should be flying through the tabs and screens but it lags almost everywhere, even the keyboard is such a pain when its lagging or because of an incoming message or MMS it downloads. Twitter is soo bad at times, it's frustrating. I don't want to be like everyone else and give up on it already, I really like this phone but what can I do to fix these issues? There needs to be an OS update ASAP, phone is glitchy as hell.
P.S. I'm starting to think T-mobile knows this phone isn't as fast as the processor says, all there ads talk about the size of the screen but never about the (so far) industry leading 1 GHz Snap Dragon Processor. Apple is always showing off how fast the iPhone is.
Sounds like you have a problem with your software- my HD2 works snappy and fine.
The original HTC SMS app has a slowdown issue when you have over about 3000 SMSes in the database, you can use the default Microsoft one (search for "Zenyee disable messaging"). Also for my particular device (T9193 Telstra version) they changed SMS in a ROM update so it isn't so bad any more.
The fastest processor in the world can't overcome software glitches. WiMo 6.5 was never optimized to run snapdragon imo since it was out the door anyway.
This is why the iPhone is so stable. Apple controls the software and hardware, and each are optimized to the max, so a slower processor feels faster.
Your friends Droid basically is doing the same thing, in that, the OS is better optimized to use the 500mhz processor.
Same here. The HD2 is laggy, not all the time, but much of the time. It spoils the whole experience because it's unpredictable. I also found the Droid to be laggy and unresponsive. While playing with it at a Verizon store, I was constantly missing swipes and clicks. Only the iphone has impressed me with consistently reliable responsiveness.
I have had no problems with my HD2.... it's the fastest phone I've ever had. Always fast and snappy. I can play playstation games at full speed, run windows 95 at a good speed. It runs everything I throw at it with ease.
its also the fastest phone i've played with, minus maybe the nexus one. compared to every other non-snapdragon phone, there's virtually no lag anywhere other than when opening applications or something.
all the previous windows phones were super laggy, but i feel like the hd2 just rocks. a couple of iphoners have even said its freakishly smooth during navigation or in opera
I have not really had any lag issues on the phone, only a few when I am taxing it.
The iPhone does not really allow true multitasking and was designed for that hardware. Often times people forget to check task manager and kill applications they dont need running. WM6.5 was not taylored to any hardware so its not quite as snappy but I prefer this greatly over my wifes 3gs
I always get random lag too...I believe its due to WM 6.5
Thats why I'm waiting for WM7 to come out so bad, since it will be optimized for the processor.
Bad slowdowns are due to some software crashing and hogging all resources. Soft reset, and if it repeats just start getting rid of the programs you installed and find the culprit.
exchange it for a new one. sounds like u got a lemmon.
Why are some HD2s laggy ?
Check:
1. free internal RAM (if lots of pics are in the album the cache eats the RAM: move it to storage card)
2. Opera-Cache: move it to SD-card. when cache is full and new sites loaded into cache after ending Opera there is some delay in reaction of HD2 for 1 minute till cache is cleared.
3. See sticky threads to optimize registry
4. Install SKTools and run full background automatic services and after installation of apps "Autoclean". SKTools is really worth it´s prize.
5. Get "Junk Cleaner" (free) and once in a while clean junk
6. Check which mods You have installed (wallpapers, themes etc.) and if You have uninstalled old ones before applying the new ones. You can mess up quite a bit the speed with this.
This WM-device is tempting to install (and then uninstall) apps on the fly leaving a lotta crap in reg and temp-folder which You rarely do on Your PC or Notebook thus slowing down Your HD2. Any other phone would have frozen in the mess the instant but Snapdragon handles it, but slow.
My HD2 is blazing fast (faster than some Netbooks/Notebooks) and more usable than almost all netbooks since I follow the above advice (once again 1000 TX to XDA-pros here, they solved almost all my problems)

I have not installed any programs and I'm constantly ending task and still no help. The phone has some major bugs.
just flash 1.72 firmware, it is blazing fast and the battery life will be better too!
It would be nice to know what firmware you're using. My HD2 is extremely fast, it replies instantly on nearly everything.
More information would be appreciated.
I have had no such issues with my unit... in fact, it's relatively flawless. The only complaint I have about mine is that I didn't get it sooner...
It's quite fast, incredibly gorgeous, and always reliable. No dropped calls, SMS always on time, and E-mails come n' go as often as I'd like them to. It's absolutely perfect... IMO.

Exactly the same for me, except for the self-enforced blip with the virus yesterday!
I'm having some problems aswell! And that was even before I started flashing the ROM... Sometimes, it gets so slow that I can't do anything - This happens especially if it has been charged over night. The next day it'll take some time before it reacts (when unlocking) firstly, it takes a lot of time after I press one of the buttons and then secondly the unlock slider can be moved to the side without unlocking.
Sometimes the SMS function just slows down incredibly - It takes a second to respond each letter and it can't keep up with spaces.
I usually close all of my tasks so there is no more than 2-3 running at the time. It just begins to feel so unreliable.

Bone stock my friend, I haven't d/l anything or install anything to this phone, it's still a virgin.

Few n00b questions

So tomorrow I'm going to be getting my first ever smartphone (HTC HD2) and I had a couple questions.
1.) Do I need a 3G SIM card to obtain 3G speeds?
2.) What exactly is a ROM? Anybody know of really good ones for the HD2?
3.) Does the phone freeze often? If so is there a fix for this?
4.) If Windows 7 ever comes out for this phone will I be able to upgrade to it.
5.) Same as above but for Android OS
6.) Are there good apps out there? Like Last.fm, twitter, etc.
7.) Would Android apps work on the HD2?
Sorry for all the questions, just wanted to make one big post so that I didn't have to constantly nag and make other threads.
1.) Do I need a 3G SIM card to obtain 3G speeds?
I don't know the definite answer but I've had my SIM card forever and I get 3G speeds.
2.) What exactly is a ROM? Anybody know of really good ones for the HD2?
It's like installing a new operating system on your computer. But all of the ROMs are about the same, but are customized for different aspects (different versions of Sense (or not at all), what programs the Chef likes, etc). See the ROM section.
3.) Does the phone freeze often? If so is there a fix for this?
Sometimes. No.
4.) If Windows 7 ever comes out for this phone will I be able to upgrade to it.
Officially: No. Unofficially: unknown; don't count on it.
5.) Same as above but for Android OS
Being worked on, could take a looooooooooooooong time.
6.) Are there good apps out there? Like Last.fm, twitter, etc.
That guide in my sig has some decent apps. I know there's a Last.fm app and a good twitter one, but their names escape me.
7.) Would Android apps work on the HD2?
No. Same goes for iPhone apps.
Thanks for the quickly reply, also what do you think of the phone?
I only got to handle it a little bit at the store, should I return it and wait for something else or should I keep it?
I got the phone because I'm stuck on T-Mobile and I like Windows Mobile, and I absolutely love it from a hardware standpoint. Windows Mobile takes a while to grow on you, and if you've ever played with an iPhone it can be quite jarring to use.
If you like tweaking stuff and having more control over your phone, I definitely recommend it. If you like apps, ease of use, and eye candy, not so much..... It's a hard choice I know.
ETA: Personally, I think the keyboard kinda sucks on it, so if you like composing long emails or texting an insane amount, you might want to rethink your choice.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw that jdwrrzmm already pointed you to the same place I was anyway

im withJDWRRZMM, i think thought the keyboard sucked, but i like a ton of things about it. ive only had mine for a few weeks, and honestly my first thought was there is not nearly enough to do on this phone (speaking from a non-developer stand point).... but i decided to let it try to grow on me, and the more i read through these forums, the more i like the phone...
like stated above, its not ANYTHING like an iphone(which i jumped from).... but in hind sight, the iphone had to grow on me too... i diidnt like aapple very much, so....
id say give it a few weeks, learn more about it, then make your mind up wether you like it or not...
sorry so much writing
1.) Do I need a 3G SIM card to obtain 3G speeds?
No
2.) What exactly is a ROM? Anybody know of really good ones for the HD2?
ROM is the OS. Good custom roms are energy and englencia stock roms is the latest one
3.) Does the phone freeze often? If so is there a fix for this?
Stock ROM-Yes ; Custom ROM- Yes/No Depends on how stable the rom is
4.) If Windows 7 ever comes out for this phone will I be able to upgrade to it.
If a chef can port it, but it will never be officialy released.
5.) Same as above but for Android OS
Same as above
6.) Are there good apps out there? Like Last.fm, twitter, etc.
Plenty. Liked the apps on the HD2 better than the blackberry's but not better than the iPhone(prob would get killed for this one ) or Anroid
7.) Would Android apps work on the HD2?
Not that anyone knows of
Cool apps I've found while using a Custom ROM
-Wireless Tether (makes your phone a wireless router for your laptop) most custom roms come with this pre installed
-Klaxon ( great custom alarm, Stock alarm sucks. It will shut off fully after a couple snoozes which is bad for me haha)
-BSB Tweaks (great app that lets you tweak your phone without doing it manually)
Hope this helps
Why do people hate the keyboard on this phone? I personally love it a lot better than Androids and Iphones keyboards.
If you want apps check out Omarket, there are a ton of free apps there. Few apps I would recommend would be co0kies home tab for great home customizing and clean RAM for keeping your phone running smoothly.
Coming from a g1, I did not think I would like not having a hard keyboard. I really like the keyboard on the hd2. I also have not had any freeze ups and any of the known lags. Cookies Home Tab is awesome. I would also recommend a good task manager. I use Dutty's and like it.
So I got the phone, I'm liking it so far and I have no freeze ups yet and the keyboard seems very nice.
Just one more thing, I saw that there was ROM update from HTC itself, how do I get the update?

Have you tried the swype keyboard..that is what I use and it rocks...not many phones have swype so that is nice showoff feature..
Here is the link for the ROM update but you might want to check to see if your phone already has the updated stock ROM installed. But here is the link for the ROMs..you are looking for the 2.13 Go to START/SETTINGS/ABOUTPHONE/SOFTWAREINFORMATION then you will see the ROM version!

Yea i have 2.13, what's the swype thing you're talking about though?

If you have 2.13 you should have swype so you can check it out. Open up a text message and hit the keyboard icon on the bottom and once it pops up hit it again but a little to the right of the actual button and a list will pop up and you should select swype.
swype allows you to drag your finger from letter to letter without lifting to spell a word.

Froyo + Epic = Amazing Phone

Okay, I'm sure a bunch of people have been having problems with their froyo upgrades... But I have had nothing short of an amazing day with my first 24 hours of Froyo on the Epic. So I am making this thread so we can highlight the POSITIVE changes that froyo has brought us Epic owners.
I have discovered a few cool things that Froyo brings, and I am sure there are more. Let's get a list compiled of all the positives:
What I have discovered so far:
1) Battery life ( see attached photo) - it is so much better than 2.1. I can't believe it's the same phone, battery!
2) The screen rotates left or right now into landscape mode. I was always astonished on 2.1 that it didn't do that.
3) Apps 2 SD. Long talked about, but awesome when it's finally here. I have a bunch of apps and I have 390Mb open on my phone. My wife has 412Mb open on her Epic. #4 is helped by this
4) The phone runs smoother. Of course Linpack scores of 13.92 prove it, but I haven't had any screen lag or lag when opening the app drawer or in typical use the way my Epic got laggy on 2.1 before. Apps 2 SD definitely helps clear up phone memory for every day use.
5) Colorized menus. It may seem trivial, but now I realize just how drab the menus were previously. The icons 'pop' with the color added to them.
6) Separate Sound and Display options in the settings menu.
7) Flash. 'nuf said on that one! Huge improvement over 2.1.
8) Improved Gmail and Youtube.
*the rest will be either new finds by me, or contributions w/ credit.
9) Pinch whatever home screen you are on to reveal all home screens. (thanks styckx)
10) I just discovered that we finally have copy/paste options of text that WE choose! When you are in a field where you have been typing and you click in that field, you get a blue slider button. You can slide that button to whatever starting point you want in your text, and then you can choose to edit and you can highlight, copy, paste, etc only the portions of text you want, not just a copy all option like before! This is a huge improvement over 2.1. Text select was the only thing I missed from my Blackberry, and now we have that too. Not in all situations, but at least it makes editing your current text so much easier.
11) I read it somewhere else before, but just verified it works. If you swipe to the right on a contact in your messages list, it automatically calls them. If you swipe to the left, it automatically starts you up for a text reply. Genius!
12) Robust stock audio player with tons more features. (thanks again styckx)
Okay, I know I am missing things that even I have already discovered and don't remember. 2.2 seems a lot more than a .x update. It's not just 1 or 2 minor tweaks like we have seen previously. Please post anything you have noticed about Froyo that adds to the Epic experience!
* I know there are some things about it people don't like. I am unable to swipe on the notification bar to increase/decrease brightness. I really enjoyed that feature. Feel free to post what you don't like about Froyo also. But I would like to concentrate on tips, tricks, improvements, etc. that Froyo has brought us!
Pinch your home screen
As great as froyo is, there are a lot of probs with it.
Random services keep appearing.
Samsung widgets disappear occasionally
Wifi not working at times (not sure if that's my connection)
Idk, I'm just curious, what measures are you taking on battery life?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
About all the bad I've noticed with the latest DK28 build is the auto-rotate is REALLY slow, and it doesn't seem to auto-rotate when on the main screen (only seems to rotate when I am in the "settings" menu). I had some odd issues with DK17 where it didn't like to delete messages from my Activesync accoutn that appears to be fixed in DK28.

I have been on wi-fi since last night. Not a single issue for me regarding that. Yet. So it may be your wi-fi.
As far as battery goes, I am straight stock everything, no battery juice defender sipper type apps or anything. Just rooted, with no Sprint apps. Nothing special.

I am getting the auto-rotate to work both ways on the home screens, and it takes maybe .2 seconds to do it. Maybe try and wipe and re-flash? Just a suggestion.
I am getting lag at random times. Sometimes the phone will just freeze for like 30 seconds as launcherpro slowly crashes. Rotation is slow, 5 seconds i mean come on. Wifi has been weirdish, might have fixed itself. So far, no where NEAR as smooth as stock DI18. Eclair on the epic was AMAZINGLY smooth and polished.
I like the new features, but there is no way that DK28 is ready for primetime. They need to do a lot of bug fixing on this to make it anywhere near as smooth as other phones running 2.2 that I have seen.
Also, I installed it correctly and several different ways, so its not a bad flash. I am currently running Stock DK28 with root and clockworkmod that was ODIN flashed from stock DI18 which I ODIN flashed. GPS is working.
One thing I really like a lot is the new Audio player. EQ, Visualizer, audio "effects", much better navigating of albums and artists.
I mean, I own PowerAmp which is THE BEST audio player period, but the new default audio player is leaps and bounds better than the old one and is fantastic for default (free).

Agreed. The features are all here. Now it just needs to be polished and smoothed out like the original Eclair builds were.
Bluetooth dialing is busted. Media hub wants to upgrade, but there is no upgrade. On the plus, my gps works now. I don't care what anyone says. This is a beta for hardware level.4 phone to test. I think we will see a newer release pushed to our phones.
I'm just going to keep it. It's stable and usable enough until the real (and hopefully more refined and stable) release is sent.
I'm sick of flashing and restocking my phone. I'm thinking a upgrade from DK28 to the real release won't require the dreaded WIPE WIPE WIPE and a rube goldberg puzzle to get the GPS to work.
If for some stupid, company killing reason DK28 as it stands now really is going to be the official release, I will go back to 2.1 and stay there. We'll see.

Hey OP you might want to try that again because I'm on froyo and can still increase/decrease the brightness using the notification slide-bar technique. The bar may hide but if you move your finger left or right even when its already gone you should see the brightness change.
Mine doesn't change orientation either unless I'm in a program. If I'm in a program, it's instant pretty much..on the homescreen I've waited and the only way I can get it to change is by flipping open my keyboard.
All of this is overshadowed by my sd not working after the update there by rendering most apps useless
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Seems to be working good for me so far. The only thing annoying thus far is the lag in bringing it from sleep with the power button. There's a second or 2 delay before the screen comes on after you hit power. In 2.1 it was nearly instantaneous.
Im not getting it to rotate to the right,

There is no Syndicate rom for DK28.
Thanks for the Post! Found some things I wasn't aware of.
I'm on this Stock Froyo Rom(DK17) and everything I've tried is working great. Notification Bar swipe for brightness works as well as Media Hub.

Although many great reports.. and some not so..
This is obviously NOT the final release. lets remember that..
It is so close now and will be great. (or better at least)
I myself tested on 3 diff phones, found recurring and non- recurring defects which point to the fact that this particular release in its entirety wont be pushed OTA to the masses.. it cant. wont handle the endless differences out in the wild..
And to be expected.. Exactly the reason why upgrades take time.
