Home button durability - Galaxy S I9000 General

Im a bit disappointed by the condition of my home button on my i9000, i barely touch/use/wipe the home button and now is full of scratches.... Samsung should have gone with all capacitive touch buttons or at least made it several times more durable..
How about you folk how is your home button doing so far?

i've had my phone for a month now and can't really see any scratches on the home button as of yet but ive got a feeling that if anything is to go wrong with the phone first it will either be the home button or the power button.
It just doesn't feel as durable as other phones.

Paul from Modaco had this issue too..
Mine still seems fine, however, I wouldn't be too fussed about how scratched it is anyway personally.

My home button is pretty scratched as well. Doesn't bother me much though.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App

mine has some serious scratches as well while the rest of the phone looks like new. I'd prefer one of the US models with capacity buttons over my international

I wouldnt be bothered of the entire plastic is black but as the pictures with modaco his scratches are quite deep and its showing white scratches into the plastic

I've had mine for a couple of months now; home button is perfectly scratchless, only 2 marks on the back cover.. Then again I don't put it in my pocket with anything else so I don't expect there to be much of a chance in getting scratched.

Mine is also fully used from 4 months and scratchless.

No you wouldn't, trust me, since all the capacitive only devices are four button devices, which makes operating them a lot more, um, touchy, than a 3 button layout.

Agreed but mainly because a hole in the glass (to make room for three home button) has seriously created a weak point. Most cracks originate from there even those that suffered minor his/drops.

It might be a bad serie of home buttons because only some people complain about.
I've my SGS since release date in july and all the phone plastics are like new even after making it fall severals times on my wooden floor (because of the charging cable )

I use a eyeglass pouch with my SGS and dont put it together with other stuff on my pocket and I barely use the home button as well.

Mine is perfect, my phone is around 6 months.
You guys should really clip your nails every once in a while..

4 front buttons - build quality?

Hey all,
I've had my Legend just over 6 days now, must say the handset is very solid and built very well.
Only reservations are around the four front black buttons...
All Legends I saw in the shop had obviously been subject to lots of prodding from potential customers and all 4 buttons [ok ok there are 3 actual/physical buttons] lost their solid 'click' feel and had worked their way loose.
I'm posting because my HOME button seems to have worked its way a tiny tiny bit loose. Not enough to send it back or anything, but now, if I tap it with my finger, there is slight movement, it rocks side to side and can now hear a little clicky sound ...without actually pressing the button....this is after 6 days .
Anyone else experienced similar issues?

Bump for this. I've noticed my HOME button has worked that little bit looser. Again.
Not fantastic for such a 'well built' device after just 3.5 months ownership.
Anyone else?
Same. I noticed it when I got it. Hasnt really got any worse and I don't think it will break but it has like a dead 'rock' to it

Yupp. Menu feels solid only on one side of the button.
Same. It's just not as 'tight' as it should be.

Yeah these buttons are the major flaw of the Legend.. if it had capacitive buttons it would be amazing
My back button is not as good as it used to be :-( have to really push it down sometimes hard for it to work

HTC HD2
Also having this problem now. HTC HD2 about 2 months old.
The back button does not click anymore and feels soft when pressed.
This is my first HTC smartphone. Their quality is horrible a phone that cost U$500.00. Haven't they figured out how to make buttons??
Mine has been fine so far, although I've noticed that the buttons' clicking part isn't correctly centralized and in perfect angle with the plastic button itself.
So I've always pressed a specific corner of them (it changes from button to button).
Like the Home and Menu ones, the correct place seems to be the lower right corner, the Back one, in the lower left.
So pressing indiscriminately would definitely wear it quite easily.
Yes it sometimes gets annoying, but to avoid future headaches I recommend you try to feel it and adapt to the design flaw.

Xperia Play Notification LED + Sanded Sides [little MOD](hardware)

I speak portuguese, but you dont need to understand everything.... the only thig that i says that is important is that the side with the triggers was just done and that after a day it would loses its white marks and became like the other
I have my play for a year now and it is in pretty bad state.... the construction quality is not the best...
and what more I care about is the power button because it is pretty much gone, I'm using apps to lock the screen and the home button to unlock...
found out that some one used a nail file to fix it, so I tried and it was better for the first 3 presses.... I noticed that the light was passing though the part I sanded down, so I did the same on the whole button.
I think It looks pretty cool and all the button lights up and catches more attention..
when its off, it is ice/transparent with the power icon in the middle...
########Update########
I'm the kind of guy that has no limits, if I something cool, I keep doing it till it finishes bad... but not this time!! I sanded down the side that has no triggers and it looks like a very dark wood with a lovely texture on it... have to fell it...
Tip. Try to do it all ways in the same direction, along the side so that you have these tiny lines right. Or use a very smooth(?) /for more delicate things sand paper and don't put any pressure on it...

That's so badass, I'm filing mine down right now even though my button works fine. It's looking awesome
I can't imagine why they covered up most of the LED to begin with...
I'm going to do that. I sanded down my other buttons so they're now black. Never thought to do the power button.

How can filing down the surface of a button make any difference to its responsiveness? surely the problem lies beneath the button with the connector?
I agree with you on the build quality. My power button hasn't gone yet but its probably on its way out. It didn't work at all a couple of days ago until I kept pressing it and luckily went back to normal normal responsiveness after that, can't be a good sign though. That and the R trigger on my device has lost its springiness, it goes down with little to no effort now. Still raises back to the surface so I suppose I should count myself lucky.
Looks cool anyway and might make it so the LED light can actually be seen in normal circumstances.
So if I sand down my power button it will make it do that? GENIUS. I never thought of that. Time to go find a nail filer.
Sweet. Going to try this in a few
I just tried it out, and the power button felt a bit weird so I licked my finger and got it a little wet, but with the case on you don't even feel it. But my god, it looks 100x better. Thank you dude.

I think the R button loses its springiness because of the way the phone is held. At least when I hold it its usually being pressed.

Not to go off topic again but I had to replace the back cover underneath the battery. As the triggers started to get sticky and not move as they looked liked they were pressed all the way down. So bought a new backing and bang... works like like new. Now.... back to our regular scheduled topic on hand.
I did this last night... so much nicer to finally see the danger led as the whole button rather then what looks like a pin needle

Use something like this
You can find this on nail cutter or swiss army multipurpose knife. Gently scrub it on your power button. You can use sand paper also which you can find it on any hardware store, but I don't prefer sand paper because the sand will come off and run into your device

Power button too recessed

I might be in the minority as couldn't find much info on this...
Not only the power btn is placed on top thus less easy to get to while using one hand, but is simply too recessed on my device. I got it 3 days ago, it is almost perfect quality build wise, but it'll take me much more to get used to this feature.
I have to press really hard, and even then has to be perfectly centered, I find it easier keeping the phone in my right hand or else have to use both hands for this.
Trust me really bad choice having placed this button this way. Hope they will change it next iteration.

Which ROM hás the ability to use HTC logo?
That's awesome. But wouldn't that make the phone turn on every time you have it in your pocket?
My button is slightly recessed or only raised a bit above the phone, but I find it very easy to press and I can press anywhere on the button. If I were op, I would definitely exchange it or just simply return it, you only bought it a few days ago right?

I was trying to get a pic of this but giving up.. Really tricky.
I will go to some stores holding the demo, see how it compares. Until then, I got a better idea how to explain this: holding my phone while typing this, I swipe my fingernail fro right to left over the power btn, no resistance, flush with body. Doing the same thing, the other way round, I meet a very slight resistance, ie the left corner is slightly raised, maybe 1mm. Is this normal?

Another reason to root. You can install a number of different kernels that allow you the ability to wake and put the device to sleep without using the power button.
Reviews have complained about the button being recessed its downright horrible thing from HTC to not think through such an important thing even when they seem to care so much about the little details of the phone. And no using some custom ROM/kernel is not the right solution at all.

Mine is exactly the same. Power button is flush to the device with no resistance if i wipe my finger across, and the left side of the button is less than a mm higher than the phone. I bought a case it its near impossible to power on the device without really digging in. I went in store for them to have a look at it but they practically laughed and smirked at one another and said they aren't going to fix it as the button still works. They wouldn't even get another handset out to compare the two buttons. Looks like i'll have to put up with it. Either that or go out my way to visit another store.

Seen 3 demo models in as many stores today. Two of them were unfortunately showing similar recessed buttons. Only one had a slightly, maybe 1mm, raised button, however it felt much better, much easier to press.

Sunk in home button, normal?

Picked up my 32 GS4 yesterday and now I am noticing that the home button is sunk in. It's completely flush with the screen. Doesn't stick out at all. It works completely fine, but makes a really audible clicking noise. Obviously Samsung doesn't manufacture these all the same. I am worried if it will get worse in time. A google search brought many results with the GS3's home button. Apparently some think its normal, some don't. I am really fussy when it comes to QC on flagship phones.
Just wondering if anyone else has a sunk in home button?
its normal.
I don't have one yet, but I just wanted to say that I really wish they would have used a capacitive button instead. I work construction, and dust/sand etc. destroys the physical buttons. Also will miss the search button that I have on gs2 I like pressing and holding it for voice search

Yeah. I have noticed a couple Note 2's home buttons being flat, while others were slightly raised. I don't know if its considered not normal, as it functions just fine.
I do not like the loud audible click the button makes. I might try to swap it towards the end of my 14 days.
EDIT: Ok, looking at it really closely, its not completely flat. Maybe a tad lower than the other phones. I don't know, I would hate to return a phone because I'm too OCD.

The home button functions perfectly fine. Since it doesn't stick out, the tactile feedback isn't that great. May take it to AT&T this week. Haven't decided. I am actually more concerned about my power button. Seems very hard to push and mushy, like its not sticking out as much as it should.
My home button is just BARELY above the rest of the phone, but it feels very responsive and a bit 'clicky'. While it's not raised so much, it at least feels really solid.
However my unlock button seems like it's really sunken in and almost hard to press at times, does anyone else have one like that as well?

Thank god, at least I'm not the only one. This is my second s4, I just brought back my first one from HUGE battery issues. Would lose 15-20% while idle while I was asleep.
Already noticed a huge difference with my new one, except now I've noticed the mushed in unlock button. It's functional, it just feels like it has the possibility of eventually getting stuck somehow...Maybe I'm just being overly attentive and sensitive with the new one.

The unlock button does seem more sunken than it should be. Might swing by the ATT store in a day or two just to check out their display...If it's that bad, i'll bring it back to best buy and see if they're willing to do another exchange . I only have 4 days left on my 15 day window unfortunately.
