Does at&t olam detect the tmobile hd2 IMEI? - HD2 General

I'm with at&t and just got a t-mobile hd2, I'm waiting to receive the unlock code. Just wondering if at&t is detecting the imei in their system and forcing a data plan on the account.
I don't want to bother with paying for data because I can only get edge connectivity.
I'm using an unlocked tmobile motorola razr right now for backup with data blocked on the line.

No it will not detect it. I am using it right now without any data plan. You can use it with basic internet too.

it will not dtect it since the IMEI is not on the database

Yes and no
the IMEI is ALWAYS transmitted when the phone accesses the network but since ATT does not have a record of it, they do not know what device it is and therefore they do not know what data plan to suggest for it.

I was thinking of getting the medianet plan for $10/mo since I have unl family texting.
but I have access to wi-fi at home and work.
is edge speed unbearably slow? Worth at least $10/mo?
right now all I pay is $10/mo for my line

Yes, EDGE is CONSIDERABLY slower, like, dialup slow. Most of the time, ATT's EDGE speed is 100KBPs or so, which is crazy slow compared to WiFi.

So, do you guys think that AT&T wont detect HD2 unlock as of today. Am getting my phone a few days from now.

WiFi or Data plan usage?

Hello all I have a HTC/Fuze (Raphael) with AT&T and can access the web just fine. I however did not get a data plan on the the phone..just an unlimited text to talk family plan. This is an offered plan in case you do not want a data plan. My question is how can you tell if you are using your wifi to access the internet and not the att network. I don't want to be charged for using the internet (since i have no data plan)...I went to the att store yesterday and they told me I can still get charged for using their network to access the net even though I have no data plan... can anyone help me with this question?
Thanks.

you need to use the HTC data connection application. you should be able to totally disallow any internet connection.
I am using an Orbit 2 on O2 UK, when wifi is connected it will only use it until disconnected or out of range, then reverts back to 3G.
You will know when it reverts back because the speed of the internet will slow significantly.
I completely disable/delete the medianet and AT&T ISP profiles so that it doesn't ever connect over 3G.
I have the same setup as you (but with a Tilt, no data plan). Download Modaco No Data cab, install and disable the ISP (the first option). This will turn off data usage but still allow you to send and recieve text and MMS.

HD2 Data questions?

I ordered a HD2, And am on AT&T. Wouldnt mind killing my 30$ data plan, is there any way to stop it from connecting, and can AT&T tell I have a smart phone?

to answer your question first, yes you can cancel your data plan and stop the HD2 from connecting to ATT data (by not setting up your device during your first setup, or you can just delete the media net settings after setup is complete. i.e. selected AT&T as your network during the first boot up).
AT&T would not recognize your device, as it is not listed in theit IMEI bank under AT&T's system. (you can just tell the representative that you have an old flip phone, if they ever call you to get the imei of your phone since it is not going to appear in their system or at the time that you cancel your data service, as i am sure they will ask you why are you terminating the iphone plan). so make sure you have an old cingular or At&t phone that you can give out the IMEI when you made the call. (This will also benefit you in the future, if you ever decided to get a medianet unlimited for $15.00 which is the perfect data plan for HD2 under AT&T since your HD2 (assuming that it is a T8585 or a Tmobile brand phone and HSDPA or 3G will not be supported.)
Im sorry but i just don't see the use of having a device such as the HD2 without using the data. Im sure that you are aware that HD2's features such as weather, maps, facebook, etc.. require's an internet connection right??? so if you decided to cancel your plan, you can only be connected thru Wifi or if ever you permit, AT&T pay per use is extremely expensive.
1Cent = 1KB
opening yahoo.com webpage = assuming 1,024KB = 1MB = $1.00
so think about it really good if i were you.
cheers
I think one problem is that the T-mo HD2's are showing up as Blackberries so they are going to force the $30 data plan regardless. I'm 100% positive they think I have a blackberry but I'm hoping that someone can tell me that they don't enforce the $30 plan in this instance?

[Q] Can I avoid having a forced data plan on AT&T?

My sister got an iPhone and gave her old blackjack II to my mom. My mom has never needed internet for her phone much less knows how to use it, yet AT&T has forcefully added a data plan and refuses to remove it. Is there any way around this?
The blackjack II is running windows mobile 6.1 standard, CE OS 5.2.19208. The phone was unlocked from when we traveled internationally. Is there any way to change the IMEI or regedit to change the identity of the phone? Or change the plan to a pay-as-you-go like what I have on my blackberry?
If you have a contract with AT&T, there is noway to remove data plan. It doesn't depend on the cell phone unit but your contract with At&T. If the 2-yr contract ended, u can definitely remove the data plan.
This phone has been off contract for a long time, so no worries there. AT&T, however, recently started identifying smartphones and automatically tagging on a data plan.
I talked to AT&T, turns out it is possible to change the IMEI and replace it with a dummy code, but my rep said it has the potential to wreak havoc on the phone (no calls, no data, etc.) and he has had some people corrupt their sim and need to get it replaced.
Are there any devs that can give me more info on IMEI swapping?

Uh, I don't think so. Even though your contract with AT&T has expired, features (such as data, texting, and even the minute plan you're on) are not part of the terms of your contract and the data, specifically, is required on any phone designated as a "smartphone" whether you're in or out of contract.
What I mean by that is you can change your rate plan at any time, add or remove texting plans, change the amount of data you have on your plan, etc, but the contract itself only means that you're agreeing to stay with AT&T for a minimum of two years, phone, features, and everything else notwithstanding.
If you have a smartphone, you have to have data now, period.
(AT&T indirect dealer).

On topic:
I'm not a dev by any means, but I do know my way around AT&T's system (and everyone else's, for that matter), so IMEI swapping is relatively easy. However, flashing the IMEI won't do you too much good, because as soon as the phone boots and is connected to AT&Ts system, they know you're using a Blackjack. The OS broadcasts that info itself over the wireless network, and a flag pops up at AT&T if you don't have a data plan on that phone.
Best thing you could do for your mom would be to get her an AT&T PayGo phone similar in looks to a Blackjack (they exist), pop her SIM card in it, and just use that and sell the Blackjack. Avoid that hassle of fighting with AT&T over data. They won't budge.
EDIT: Your REP told you about using a dummy IMEI? That's rather interesting, because even if you put a false IMEI into AT&Ts system, and it takes it, AT&T will still recognize the phone as a Blackjack as soon as it's connected to their network.

[Q] How to get AT&T SIM Working?

I put in my chip and it can't connect at all? Is there anything special I need to do to be able to connect to AT&T?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401
That thread should work. One thing to remember, if you don't have an LTE data plan on your account then you need to use "phone" instead of "pta," which is also mentioned in the post.
I called them last night, from the new phone, after popping my iPhone 4 (3g speed) sim in. Told them I wanted to re-provision my grandfathered unlimited plan to a Smarthphone 4g plan. When they asked I just gave them the IMEI off the Nexus and said it was an LG phone (Optimus G, I did have to re-iterate that a few times to them). Then used the 'phone' APN, 'pta' wouldnt work as I think thats LTE specific, and when they told me to reboot I had data. Checked my at&t account immediately after, and my old Unlimited Data for iPhone had been changed to "Data Unlimited SmartPhone Personal". Was pretty easy =)

Slow tethering (<200Kbps), APN options grayed out, PdaNet not working, T-Mobile

My T-Mobile 6T has been great so far, but when I used the hotspot earlier today I was disappointed by the wireless tethering speeds. I popped the SIM card back into my old phone (unlocked Mate 9) and, although wireless speeds were slower overall, the tethering was much faster. I attempted to edit the APN settings, but everything was grayed out. I was able to add my own APN, but when attempting to enter 'APN type' received a message saying "Carrier does not allow adding APNs of type dun." Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Is T-Mobile trying to get me to pay more for 4G tethering by somehow slowing my hotspot to below 3G speeds? Would the international ROM be able to circumvent this?
Thanks
if you're paying for 4G tethering, then call T mobile and ask for help
If you're trying to steal it without paying for it, thats a different story

Not trying to steal 4G, just wondering why the 6T's hotspot is slow much slower than my old phone when the the phone itself is so much more capable. My Mate 9 gets closer to full 3G speeds (500Kbps) when tethering.
Thanks
The only stealing that would be going on is the carrier trying to get him to pay for the same data twice.
