Does no root, mean no android OS update? - G2 and Desire Z General

So if we are not able to root the G2, does that mean newer Android OS updates are unattainable? IE we wont be able to get Android 3.0? Or updates has nothing to do with rooting?

No updates will come. W/o getting too technical, when an update comes some type of encrypted key lets the phone know that it's a legit update and unlocks the read-only files for the rewrite.
Or something like that...

OTA update. do or dont?

I don't really want to root yet. I'm waiting for the roms to get better and for some solid 2.2 action. In the mean time should I install the ota update? Will I ruin a good thing?

+1, want to know this too... also what is the OTA fixing? just the SD card issues? is this something that can be fixed w/o the OTA?
can some please tell me? i just wanna know if im better off waiting without the update.
Really? 180 views and nothing? Surely SOMEONE can tell us the answer to this question.
I read in some of the other threads not to.
Do. Nobody is replying because it is old news. Search forums.
People that did the update had fewer errors then the ones pre update.
Same as you I'm still waiting for a more solid 2.2, not yet rooted or update OTA. For me there is no urgent need to OTA since I've replace the Stock SD Card and haven't experience anymore problem (Evo is nice and smooth). I'm just gonna play it safe and hold off on OTA until I rooted my phone most likely with Toast method (THANK YOU VERY MUCH TOAST!!!).
the ota does more than just fix the sdcard issue, it reportedly locks down internet sharing/tethering as well and no idea what else. if you apply the update, you will need to sign up for sprint's $29 hotspot service or root your phone with unrevoked and install the wifi tether app...
other than that, enjoy the phone
I haven't applied the OTA yet and my Evo has been flawless so far. Normally I'm a rabid upgrader of anything and everything but I don't see any reason to do so now and there are some possible downsides.

A new OTA update was released yesterday. My phone is already rooted with the unrevoked method. I updated while I was drunk btw. But the OTA didn't mess with my wireless tethering...I'm still tethering away, freely!
just for my own education. once you update, can the simple unrEVOked method still be used?

Same here. I verified the URL with my alogcat, it's the same. Rebooting now....
Took a while to boot, but it booted and I'm on FRF91 now. Nice.
Will these updates to FRF85 be integrated into aosp??

It did take a long time to boot. I hooked it up to ddms to make sure it wasn't looping.

With my old Android phone Samsung used the term "security fixes" as synonym for "fix glitches that allowed root access"… I hope Google is doing some real security fixes
nvm...................
It would be nice if we had a full update of it instead of incremental. That would be easier to make a rooted update from for those of us that are lazy.

But they may fix the new "root access without unlocking the bootloader" exploit that popped from FRF72 onward.
You're right, didn't think about this one.
hmm... I don't use gmail all that much. I think I'll stick to CM 6 as the alpha 3 or test 1 will be here soon with FRF91 I'm sure

Rooted, surprised not on here:

Hope some XDAers are able to get it rooted before it gets patched.

This has already been patched and pushed out, BB was actually impressively quick to patch the issue and push out a new update. A few carriers in the US might not yet have signed off on the update, but the vast majority of reports from users say they've gotten this update. I know I have.
But, can we just load an older build using an auto-loader ?

On blackberry 10, when an update fixed security issues, they put the older versions in a blacklist, so you couldn't downgrade with the autoloader

This is not BB10, this is Android, and yes, I can downgrade, I've tested it.
can root using this exploit?
A small group of devs wrote a script to get root using this exploit for a few Sony phones. Ive looked through there git and if i understand it correctly then the script should be modifiable to work for the priv but you first need to figure out the physical addresses in the memory for the kernel in order to make it work. I don't know awhole lot about this stuff so correct me if I'm wrong.
Seeing all those one click root apps i was thinking it was going to be easier to root the priv once an exploit was found

So does this mean one can downgrade and then root using iovyroot?

Theoretically, yes, you would need to add the absolute kernel addresses of the Priv to the source code, then compile it, but still, you would only get temp root, that's only good for using Titanium Backup and the like.
Ah okay, I understand.
So this root is only temp then? Still hoping something comes out but the community seems very small.

Nougat is here for Verizon devices!

I look at my system updates, and I see this! I couldn't believe it! Nougat is finally here!
Just checked and received it as well!
Has somebody captured the OTA file?
Can we root the android nougat?
I had Verizon before. They are known for doing updates late and completely messed up. At least they aren't late this time. I'm just miffed that they dropped it before RETUS.

You do not need root to read most system files.
It used to be in /cache but deletes itself after the flash.

I know. Since I flashed it, I couldn't pull the ota through logcat.
My update is having issues. Tried a handful of times and would get "update could not be verified" or something similar after the download would complete update. When it doesn't fail verification, the install fails after rebooting. wtf, I have tried the VZW/Moto software update program but it returns that I have the latest software. Guess that channel might not be updated yet.

What is the issue with the Verizon variant for root? I am willing to commit a good tip for a verifyable process to anyone that can do it in a reasonable timeframe. Anyone else willing to donate to the cause?

Tmo System Update

Anyone else getting a system update today? I've already got owacerts set as .bak and sys updates disabled, but for some reason I'm still getting the nag? Any thoughts on preventing this? Nothing to freeze in Titanium for FOTA, or System Update since it's a diff variant.
