[Q] Random Shutdowns on G2 - G2 and Desire Z General

Has anyone had an issue where the phone just shuts down? Mine has done this about 3 times after it has been on for over 5+ hours it just turns off... Doesn't restart.
Sometimes I can hold the power button and it turns back on starting at the HTC screen, other times I have to take out the battery and then power it back on.
Does anyone know what would cause this? Or how to fix it? Should I exchange my phone?
Thanks!

Mine did this due to the batter being lose. I was able to rock the batter on the lower left corner when the back was off. After I wiggled the battery, sd, and sim around I was able to get rid of the rocking and the battery was secure. You should check for this.

Thanks for the quick responce. I just cheched, everything seems very snug. I took SIM, Battery, And SD Card out and reinserted them.. I should know tomorrow if it fixes it, seems to do it once a day or so...
If anyone else has ideas please let me know... If it continues I need to get it relaced before my 14 days.

Just exchange your phone. Its not supposed to do that.

This evening I experienced the problem where the phone is frozen with the screen off and does not respond to any button presses for the first time. When I removed the battery so I could restart I noticed that the SD card holder had unlocked and was popped up. I know my G1 would hang and/or reboot when a bump caused my SD card to pop loose, so maybe the same thing is happening with the G2.

Hmm, very weird as I haven't had any problems with it doing this, like above stated, I'd just return the phone over something like that, it happens.

evo wont turn on unless i take out battery

anybody else run into this? i know if i installed a programmed that messed up the startup but if i have to power down the phone and turn it on, the only way i can complete this is by taking the batter out and putting it back in and then the phone powers on.
I just started to have the same trouble. I am going to be doing a wipe and starting over this weekend ... hopefully that will clear up the trouble.
Let me know how that works for you. Mine is doing the same thing.
Having the same problem here, can't figure out why.

i have problems getting mine to turn on as well. i find i have to press and hold the power button for 5 or more seconds to get it to turn on. this may be intentional...
Mine seems to have the same issue, I have to take my battery out also.
Not a big deal since I dont reset often, and its not Windows mobile.

The only time I've had this happen was when the device was connected to the charger, either too the pc or plug. Removing the cord and letting the notification light go off allowed me to boot again normally.

Yep. Sounds like you messed with settings that you don't know what you're changing. Start with a clean slate and don't edit what you don't know.
guys when you hit power off the Orange led lights... the phone is not fully shut down until that light turns off (30sec to a min). after that the phone can turn back on without a battery pull.

I can assure you I didn't change any settings I didn't know I was changing. And BTW there's no setting that's "Don't let phone turn on without taking the battery out first" and no other settings anywhere, not in EPST, not in Testing, nowhere that would create this problem.
I have found that once you turn it off if you wait 45 seconds all the way up to 2:00 minutes the phone will turn back on without a battery pull.
Ohwut, go to Settings...About Phone...Battery and Boot...and uncheck the box for "Don't let phone turn on without taking the battery out first". You were probably screwing around in here and checked this one by mistake.

i needed a laugh this morning.
I was having this same problem. I decided to take it into sprint to see what they had to say. I haven't rooted or done anything with my MSL. After about 15 minutes the techs told me that it was a bad battery. They put a black hero battery in the phone and I have not had a single problem since. they did not wipe my phone back to factory, just replaced the battery.
Maybe you would have luck with the same thing... My suggestion is if you upgraded from a hero like I did, try your hero battery. if you don't have any problems after that, put the evo battery back in and take it to the sprint store and get yourself a replacement battery for it... I can't guarantee that that they won't wipe your phone so backup first. Always backup before taking your phone in to be serviced.

Mine was off for 5-10 minutes and no light and no response to holding the power down. No options to power off or turn on. NO response at all till I pulled the battery out and replaced it. It hasnt happened since. Of course I had to be with a bunch of iphone users so they were having their fun.

Mine has the same problem. I bought mine from radio shack so trying to get them to do anything is like pulling teeth. And they don't reserve Evos in case something goes wrong like a sprint store does.
I hate to bump such an old thread, but...
Mine will NOT turn back on once I turn it "off" without a battery pull. I'm talking like, waiting more than 5 minutes.
Anybody know what's happening here?

I had this issue for awhile but it seemed to go away on its own. I have a feeling it might have been a buggy app that either got uninstalled or fixed in an update.
But it was a very annoying problem!!

try short presses of power button, usually 3rd to fifth press turns it on for me, w/o batt pull
what rom or version are you using? when I was on the 1st OTA update rom I had that problem. But when I OTA to 1.47 it went away. now I am on froyo and of course it's good.

Nexus 7 keeps turning off at random intervals

This has been going on for about a week or so.
At first I kept finding it off in the morning after charging, and then it became more common. Mostly happens when the screen is off but not always, I've had it turn off twice whilst I'm using it for example. A couple of times it has needed a long press to restart it before it will turn back on. Right now it has turned itself off and will not turn back on.
Battery has never fallen below about 50% throughout so it cant be that. It doesn't get heavy use so I'm not convinced its overheating. I had a look through the app list and none of them seem to be obvious candidates for the problem, and if i cant get the thing to turn back on I cant even test that.
I think this one is going back to HMV asap but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for me to avoid the problem with its replacement, or if anyone is having the same problem. Its a shame as I've been really enjoying my Nexus.

Hi, I had the exact same problem and ordered a replacement from the play store. I never found a way to fix it, I would recommend you just get a new one from HMV. I hope this helps
This actually just started happening to me yesterday on my 3 day old 16GB Nexus 7. I kept mine plugged into the AC all weekend, and yesterday watched it shut down itself once. Thought it was a fluke and just turned it back on...left it running overnight...pick it up this morning and it's turned itself off yet again. I guess I'll have to return this one before it completely doesn't turn on anymore!
Bah. Thought that might be the case.
2 days off charge (and some time on charge) and mine still wont turn on.
Definitely going back for replacement.
Elsydeon, it sounds like you should do the same. Took about 4 or 5 days to go from irregular to brick.
I seem to be getting the same thing... Once every day or two I pick up my Nexus and the screen won't turn on, I hold the power button and it starts booting up. I haven't had this while charging (maybe because the screen is on while charging??)
For those of you who traded in for a replacement, did this solve the issue for you?
I was getting this, but was using one of those magnetic cover/cases. If I wrap the cover round the back of the N7 whilst using it, the magnet in the case/cover is sometimes strong enough to turn the device off from the back!
Mine has powered off twice now

Just wondering as well like the last guy if swapping for a new one helped this issue.
I actually have looked at the battery data and think somewhere the nexus has gotten a power spike that turns it off but not sure if that definitely is the issue.
If it is, perhaps it's where we are plugging in or a failure with the AC plug?
Ideas? I've attached a photo. I hope it uploaded.
Thanks.

Nexus 7 32GB Display Keep Turning Off
My Nexus 7 32GB tablet's display continues to turn off at random times also. It happens while I'm watching a video in landscape. But then I stop the video, go to the home screen, and it still turns off. I already replaced one last week and now its happening to my new one. Anyone got answers? I'm going to call google device support today. Maybe if enough people call, they'll do something about it. Their # is 888-836-3987.

My NEW 32 tab worked out fine for a night and woke up today to the full battery indicator and tablet off again.
I have a new insight though, somehow the battery temp is rocketing to 100 and I'm guessing that is when it shuts off.
It may be because I am using SetCPU to limit my CPU speed to 300mhz when the screen is off. Maybe the tablet is trying to update all my apps while I am sleeping? It shouldn't use so much power though.
I'm going to try to create a new command to let it use it's whole CPU as long as it's on AC and screen off and see what happens tonight.
Happened overnight again. No insights? Does anyone think my nexus will finally brick sometime?
I don't know anyway of testing what is up with this thing? Thanks.
Nexus 7 Screen Keeps shutting off - Fixed
To those experiencing issues with their Nexus 7 screen randomly shutting off.
I just received one for Christmas, and thought this dang thing sucks. The screen would stay off and only show for half a second when I click the lock button to turn it back on.
The issue what the case. The the case, when folding back, contains a small piece of metal on the click. This little connection, thought not direct, causes the screen to shut off. I've tested it out multiple times just to make sure.
Again the FIX is, keep metal away from the back of the nexus, it doesn't like anything that can cause a magnetic field. Even if the metal is enclosed by something.
nexus 7 screen turns off
For those of you who are experiencing intermittent screen display going to sleep mode or turning off you can fix it by removing your tablet cover. Some third party tablets come with different strength magnets stitched inside the cover. The magnet is used to activate the nexus tablet smart cover functionality. If you flip the cover to the back of the tablet the magnetic field may cause the tablet to think it should turn off while in use. Get rid of your cover reboot your tablet and notice that the screen will stop turning off. Hope this helps.
Hi, I also had similar problems with my Nexus 7. After removing the back of the unit, I saw that the battery was nearly unplugged. I simply popped the connector in and voila! no more SOD, turning off, nothing.
So, the Nexus was probably turning itself off because there was randomly no more power comming from the battery.
Here's a link on how to remove the back shell : http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+7+Teardown/9623/1

I was researching before going to get my Nexus 7 replaced today as it also started having this issue. After reading your post, I took your advice and removed the back to find that my battery connection was also barely intact! Thus it would lose power any time it was bumped slightly to that side. Now that the connection is securely in place, I've had no more problems!! Thanks to you StefGou!!!
Hey guys. A few hours ago I encountered the same said problem. I woke up to find the battery was depleted so I charged it. It turned on by itself and stated that I have 6% battery left. As I wait, suddenly the screen was like distorted and give me static sound then shut off. Numerous trials later end up the same. So I just put on the charger thinking to let the battery full. To my surprise, there was no indicator that my N7 is charging. I just leave it charging and left. About an hour I got back it still nit charging. I boot the N7 and it still on 6% battery. So I followed you guys handsomely instructions to remove the 3rd party cover and now my N7 is back. Thanks guys. But I wonder why it is happening now? I've been using the cover since forever.

Nexus 4 wont turn on

Hey everyone, Im having a problem thats making me worry. I was using my phone today and for some reason the phone wont turn on after I turned it off. I havent dropped the phone at all and it hasnt been abused in any way. The last thing I was doing before I turned it off was trying to send feedback for the Yahoo Mail app because it wouldnt sync automatically, but even that was unsuccessful because it wouldnt send. So I thought I should just reboot it but afterwards its not turning on at all.
I tried holding the power button for at least 20 seconds and still nothing is happening, and I tried plugging in the power cord to see if that would help but it hasnt. Has anyone gone through a similar issue? Please Help
Thanks.
Leave it plugged in for fifteen minutes without touching it.

Try holding volume up + power to see if you can get into recovery then reboot from there.
Also, give some more details about your setup...
Rooted/Stock/What Rom/Kernel?
Yea I left it alone for a bit and then I held the power button while holding down both volume rockers and somehow it turned on. I dont know why this happened but I'm just glad it turned back on, it gave me a good scare though. I just hope it doesnt happen again
Mine is completely stock, I havent done anything with it yet
And may I ask what was your battery percentage level like after the short charge? Maybe the phone drained it all just being turned off... There were some cases of this here...
i wanted to add that i had a similar problem with my phone not turning back on. However, I managed to fix what was wrong by just plugging in the usb cable. I know you've tried it, but just in case someone else stumbles upon this thread (like me!) and has a problem turning on their nexus, I wanted to share my experience.
I haven't done anything to my phone other than add my old apps to my Nexus since I received it 1.5 weeks ago. It's stock. I've never dropped it or gotten water on it or anything. I charged it overnight last night and stuck it in my purse on the way to work. I think I briefly saw a working screen after I unplugged it this morning. However, the first time I tried to access my phone today was after I got to work. It wouldn't turn on, though that pinkish light at the bottom was still blinking. I tried calling it and the Nexus wouldn't ring even though the call went through a few rings and then onto voicemail. I tried holding down the power button for a while and also holding the power button with the volume keys to see if that would work, and it did not. Finally I borrowed a usb cable to plug it in, hoping the jolt of power would wake it up. That worked. It gave me the charging symbol for a little bit and then gave me the startup/loading screen with the glowing x made of arrows. I checked my battery and it was at full charge. Well, it was at 85%, which is odd since I plugged it in for about 9 hours last night to charge and there has only been 3 hours of non-use since I unplugged it. Also, if it was really turned off during those 3 hours it shouldn't have ate up any battery. Anyway, I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents in case anyone else has this problem. My brother, who gave me the Nexus, told me that he only has 2 weeks to return it if there's something wrong with it or I don't like it. Needless to say this gave me a scare, since the 2 weeks is almost up.

Yes this happened to me the other night. I was making a phone call and accidentally hit the power button. I then tried to turn the screen back on in order to hang up the phone and it would work. I tried holding the button for 15 seconds, tried pressing the volume up/down keys, and still nothing. I then put it back in my pocket for a minute or so and tried again. When I did that the screen came back on and the call was still active. Very strange, and I hope it doesnt happen again....

Same thing is happening to me right now.
Running stock. Not rooted. Phone charge was around 70% and I was on twitter and the app force closed. So I decided to restart my phone then went to turn it back on and it wont respond. Tried holding down the power button for 20 sec. Volume up and power, volume down and all 3 at the same time. Still nothing. Leaving it on the charger for awhile and the screen is blank no battery logo or anything.
Not quite sure what to do now?

I'm having similar problems. Lots of random rebooting and refusals to turn back on sometimes, even though the LED at the bottom is flashing so i know the phone is still powered up. Also, sometimes when i have it plugged into a computer through usb it will get extremely hot and completely shut down, not turning back on for a long time. I called the google play store and someone is going to get back to me. I love my nexus 4 so i hope i can get this fixed or a replacement.

I had this issue too a couple of times playing Pandora through my car's Bluetooth. That was when the Nexus 4 had 4.2.1. I have not had this issue with Pandora since the upgrade to 4.2.2.
However, I just now had this issue with Movie Studio app and exporting a video I edited. It turned off its screen like normal screen timeout but then would not come back on.
I had to Volume Up + Power button for a few seconds and then release to get it to reboot.
This same thing is happening to me. Haven't found a specific cause...
Just got the same issue
Today got mine not turning on.
Managed to turn it on by holding volume up and power button together for about 30 seconds while phone was on a stock charger. After that I saw blinking orange led. When I resolved buttons there was a battery pictogram. After pressing and holding power button I finally got turning on vibration and Google logo.
The only things a made after the charging were making few photos of my cat (from the lock screen) viewing them in gallery. Then I locked the screen and put the phone on a shelf. In a hour I was not able to turn it on.
My phone has stock rom and only few third party apps installed.
I got muy Nexus 4 on 21-Dec-2012. 4 days ago I flashed to Android 4.2.2 which phone dowloaded itself. After flashing phone was rebooted.
What I noticed is that it shows 70% battery. But It was fully charged few hours ago.
30% in 2 hours! In my opinion some service/app drained these 30% by using 100% of processing power that caused overheating and/or hanging.
I too have just had this problem. And I've had it previously when making calls, the screen simply won't respond at all, its quite annoying.
This morning my alarm went off and the screen wouldn't turn on, it went on for so long I almost threw the phone across the room. I eventually held the power button and volume down/up button and then the led blinked orange a few times and the phone reset, now it seems fine.
Its a very annoying problem, and could be very serious depending on what you are doing, might have to phone the play store and tell them.

This has happened to me twice now. First time was a month ago and the second time was this morning. Phone was at 100% just woke up checked my messages turned off phone 10 min later it will not turn on. Un plugged cord re plugged cord nothing finally pressed up/down vol and power for about a minute (long minute) and the phone rebooted. YIKES!
Every thing seems normal now but I hate that scare and the fact that it has happened to me twice. Full Stock, not rooted.

Happened second time.
I was able to turn it on again by following the same steps. But this time I got some strange issue: after resolving vol+ and power buttons I saw battery pictogram with some frame with a blue background; when phone finally booted up this frame and blue background were visible through the my desktop background an screen itself was much lighter with pure colors. Only after about 5 soft resets screen seems to became nice again. Each reboot caused blue frame to become less visible. I'm confused and worried.
Also during all these reboots this frame with blue background was visible even in behind "Google" and "X" logos during booting up.
Another strange thing is that on screenshots I made this frame is not visible.
That would have to do with LCD or software..
As the battery & Google are just pictures that change. If you understand what in saying lol ?
Nexus⁴

Could a faulty battery be causing these issues?

I dropped my phone a bit ago and had to replace the screen. I also damaged the battery when I removed it so bought a supposedly genuine one.
The replacement battery doesn't charge right. It will say it's fully charged when the phone is switched off but when I turn the phone on it could be anywhere from 50%-100% charged.
Recently my phone has started turning itself off randomly. It doesn't power down. Just goes from on to off.
And then today it's been constantly asking me to re-enter my sim pin. But the phone isn't resetting before this happens.
I've tried a couple of different ROMS and they both do this.
Strangely if I go into recovery the phone NEVER turns off.
Could a dodgy battery cause these problems? Or is it a hardware problem?

I dropped my phone a bit ago and had to replace the screen. I also damaged the battery when I removed it so bought a supposedly genuine one.
The replacement battery doesn't charge right. It will say it's fully charged when the phone is switched off but when I turn the phone on it could be anywhere from 50%-100% charged.

Try it on stock ROM with a clean flash then report back

I thought of that. I'll give it a shot.
Tried with stock 4.4.4 and I can't even unlock my sim card now. I put in my pin number and it just goes back to asking for it again. A message flashes for a split second that I can't fully make out but I know it says "failed" at the end. Hmmmm, I'm thinking it's a hardware issue. New battery is coming tomorrow so I'll see if it is that.
Got my new battery today and my phone is now working. Who'd have thought a dodgy battery would cause such weird issues?
Congratulations

Phone powers down after attempting to take a photo

Hi Guys,
I am wondering if anyone is having this problem or has had this problem and knows how to fix it.
Basically what happens is the battery is over 70 percent and when I attempt to use the camera whether it be taking a picture or video the phone will shut right off, then when I attempt to restart it by pressing the power button, it will not power up.
The only way to get it to turn on is to remove the battery and reinstall it. I di notice that the back of the phone is very warm.
Here is what I have tried, originally I was thinking it had something to do wit ht he sd card failing, so I removed it and turned the phone on but the problem keeps happening. I also tried leaving it alone to see if letting it cool down would fix the problem but again it keeps happening.
I do not want to restore the phone but I might just have to do it.
Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried taking a picture with the phone plugged into an outlet to see if it's a faulty battery?
Bad battery mine was doing same thing, Everytime I opened snap chat or try to take a picture at 50ish percent phone would shut down. New battery solved the issue for me.
