Hey guys! I'm a new user on this forum and I also a completely new android user, I have just gotten the HTC Desire HD. And I'm really really enjoying the OS. The way you can customize the OS is amazing! And Therefore I feel like I have been missing out for a while.
However there is one single problem about the HTC Desire HD and sadly it's a pretty big problem. (You guessed it,) the battery life. I'm not gonna lie, if i cut some features i can easily get through a whole day. But whats the point of buying a phone with lot's of features if you can't use them, and whats the point of having a 4.3" screen if you can't have the brightness level at 50+.
To the point!
HTC have already made updated batteries that have a much higher capacity than the original batteries, these are for some of their other products.
(just look at the higher capacity HD2 batteries by HTC, they have a higher capacity than the original HD2 batteries.)
That's why i suggest that we all contact HTC and let them know that we are both aware and annoyed by the horrible battery. And then request a better and improved battery for the Desire HD.
If you look at their updates, they have a pretty good history of listening to their customers.
And if their customer service department get about 300 requests in one single day I am absolutely sure that we will see a result in a month or maybe even faster.
I live in Denmark myself and I've seen a similar thread in
a Danish forum and in two days time we have had 183 people send mails to the Scandinavian HTC customer service.
Now there is only about 2000 active users on that forum so that's pretty good for two days. And with such a huge success in a Danish forum, I'm sure a big forum like this would do even better!
So if you have the time to write a little email to the HTC customer service telling them about the poor battery life and then make a request for a better battery, I (and probably every DHD user) would appreciate it.
And even if you are one of those lucky users that can go for days without charging while having standard settings,helping us wouldn't hurt.

Well....although I do get your point, I am not sure that I, and probably other people as well, agree entirely on the 'horrible' battery life.
Yes, at first, it does look to have poor capacity when you get your DHD out of the box.
But remember, a lot of people, if not allm are using their new toy a lot the first couple of days.
If you browse this forum and the DHD topics you'll see that people report a lot better battery life after a couple of charges.
In addition to this, when you get into rooting and flashing, you'll see that users with custom roms, custom kernels and special profiles setup in Setcpu (like less Mhz usage when the screen is off) actually even get better battery life out if their DHD....
In essence, from what I have read, most people are able to use their DHD for one day without charging, which in my opinion, is quite acceptable, considering the size of the screen, the speed of the device and the possibilities and syncing going on....
If I sometimes read other cells'threads, it appears to me that the battery life on the DHD is not that far off, or even is better, than other top devices....
Having said that.....the effort you take I understand for sure, I just am not sure that HTC will do anything about it (as I think what we get is what we should expect)...
Where is the solution in that? Infact there is no solution its how it is

DHD battery life sucks.
There is no point defending it. Its a bloody mobile phone, it supposed to be able to work out of box, not a science project that u have to spend days tweaking it in order to last a day without the bloody adapter!

If you mean 'it's supposed to have the best possible life the first time I fully charge it on day one' then, no it's not. You are wrong.
I just don't get it this was my first proper Android phone after coming from a HD2 and an iPhone 4 and the battery life is on par with both out of the box however simply reducing the time some apps sync I mean can you really not wait the 2 sec ish Twitter etc take to update? Really does improve battery life I have my screen set to 30% brightness which is more than enough if not you need specsavers not a new battery.
At a push I can get 2 days out of my DHD and I would say I'm a average to heavy user about 30 min calls 50 odd text and a couple of hours playing games surfing the net
Gadget show last night drained an iPhone 4 from full charge to flat in 2 hours using the layer app
I don't use setcpu etc I've just used some common sense.

well, i charged mine overnight, leave home at 7, phone dead most days by 5pm. u can defend the battery life as much as you want, and i m glad u like yours. less than 12hr of standard use makes any smartphone useless in my view.

I use iphone4 along side my DHD, almost identical setup in terms of sync and updates. when my DHD battery flat out in the afternoon, iphone4 has typically over 80% left.
I dont think it takes a rocket scientist to see DHD's battery is an issue.

Unplug mine from charging about midnight, get home from work between 18.30 and 20.30 and most nights I have approx 30-40% battery left, LiOn batteries need multiple charge / discharge cycles to get the best out of them so no phone is gonna be at it's best outta the box.
There seems to be massive difference in peoples experience with there DHD mine defo lasts as long as the iPhone 4 I had how yours can last less than 20% there must be something wrong

mine actually died last night (the first night i had it) i was a little surprised but i checked the battery usage and com.zxing..... used like 70%
lol it seems the barcode scanner didn't close and kept the camera on all night
I am a heavy user Facebook sync every hour a hundred odd texts a day few hours of internet browsing and I can get more than 12 hours mainly like 15 hours unplug at 7.30am and charge it 12.30am

it seems that some people have a very good battery life even with heavy use,and some don't. I am new to android having come from windows mobile. In winmo devices,the radio version on the device can make a difference to the battery life on similiar devices.maybe this is the same case on DHD because I noticed there are several version of stock roms with different built of radio image.

There isn't really a benchmark for "heavy user". I reckon its largely due to different interpretations. Throw the difference in batteries that are likely to exist due to the manufacturing process, and you'd get varying reported results.

why do people complaint so much about battery life of DHD and other smartphone. when you look at their capabilities, you wouldn't switch your laptop on an expect it to last all day. cause its a smartphone doesn't mean it can do everything for you!
if the battery really bad, then the is a fault i.e faulty battery,app which is eating up resources, radio constantly changing from 2g to 3g which i think one of the biggest drain on battery or a set up which just going to drain battery faster etc etc. These phone when "out of the box" are set up to show the phone off, so yes its going to have it all sing and dancing at you! with everything switched on why you taylor the setting to meet your needs. please don't come back and say "but yes why have i got a smartphone and then i have to switch off all these features" you don't but don't expect it to last all day.

True, but i honestly cant see why it would hurt to encourage HTC to make a new battery with higher capacity as a part of their accessory lineup for the Desire HD.
sorry yeah i do agree with you, that HTC sould bring out a higher capactiy battery and don't understand why HTC have not used a higher capactiy battery in first place. ive also have a X10(1500mAh) and BB storm2(1400mAh) both have higher capactiy, and X10 is the worst for battery life out of the 3 phones and DHD beats both these phone on battery life.
HTC have the reasons why they used that size battery for the DHD and if they do bring out a higher capactiy at least you can believe the claims of it being a 1800mAh, were these 3rd party batteries claim 1800mAh but really you only getting 1400mAh.
i was not aiming this rant at you, an im sorry, its to people that complain about battery life of todays smartphone and there expections of them.
Test it! You must not use more Power per Hour than 1%.If you are at 4% you do something wrong. In standby of course...

I just submitted the following letter to HTC's Customer Service:
"Phone = Telus Desire HD. I've been using my new Desire HD for awhile now but have come to conclude it has one major design flaw. If I don't cripple half of its options/features before leaving the house the battery has trouble making it through the day. Once half the features are crippled what's the point of having a smart phone? Please tell me HTC is in the process of designing/producing an upgraded battery? I have no issues with spending additional money to utilize my device to it's full potential, although I am alarmed R&D did not resolve this before launch. HTC did not make the battery cover replaceable nor did they add a little depth to the phone to allow a larger battery. Unless HTC can refine their battery design are all their current Desire HD customers forced to use their phone with reserve? It saddens me that I can't even recommend this phone to a friend because of the atroshish battery life. Lastly when I purchased this phone I did so because of HTC's reputation. I neglected to read current reviews prior to my purchase knowing that it was a flagship phone for HTC. After purchasing it I started browsing reviews and found only one common theme that never deviated. The Desire HD has a dismal battery life. What if anything does HTC plan to do about this??"
Yes guys I know that recent rom development has done leaps and bounds to improve battery life, and there are plenty of ways to extend it but the bottom line is HTC released this and knows that everyone has the same issue. They should come up with some course of resolve. If they found a way to refine the battery vastly extending its life this phone would be untouchable. I hope more users write to HTC and complain. It only takes minutes but as customers our voices should be heard.

Glad to hear it, I hope more follow suit. The way I see it is the XDA forums in the Desire HD section gets an astonishing number of hits. If even 1 out of every 500 people that just read the Desire HD threads write a complaint in regards to a battery it will have a swift impact on a battery upgrade option for the desire hd.
Unfortunately I think this is the HTC policy. They never build a perfect phone; think about the HTC Desire and the Nexus One: they're legendary devices but they had multitouch (and weak reception on N1) issues. The HTC HD2 probably was the best phone they ever made, but it had a tiny 1320 mAh battery and Windows Mobile 6.5. Other phones had issues like camera, WiFi performances, etc... And now our DHD: no S-Amoled ( = more energy required to keep the huge screen on), a low capacity battery and a sub-par GPS.
I think this is their strategy to make sure ppl will keep buying their new phones. You get it, you recognize it has plenty of great features and most things work just as expected (unlike other manufacturer like Samsung, Motorola), you get a lot of software updates... But you have one or more issues which will let you consider to upgrade to their new models.
Just my 2¢... I'd love if HTC should announce a 1500/1600 mAh extended battery tho

Never quite looked at it that way but maybe it is a HTC conspiracy. Give them just enough to keep them coming back. Regardless I hope you voice you concern to HTC too and maybe we'll see that 1500/1600 mAh battery in the near future.
You won't see it for a couple of reasons.
The Desire hd is near end if life in terms of being a flagship, and the technology simply doesn't exist to increase battery cell density further. The only way would be a physically larger battery which is impossible given the design of the dhd.

There is no doubt a new flag ship is just around the corner. And yes I've heard the density argument several times, but I'm praying they still have a trick or two up their sleeves that they have yet to reveal. ;0) Besides, it can never hurt to take a shot even when the odds look overwhelming. But hey who knows, when they respond to me they might just admit I'm SOL. We'll see what the future reveals.

A day and a half and I'd be ecstatic. I get a full day too, but refrain from allot of the everyday tasks I'd also like to accomplish. I spend 14-16hrs away from home 5-6days a week. Normally by the time I return home my phone is warning me about 15% battery. Yes I could charge it while in my car, yes I could swap batteries (but I HATE the battery cover), and finally yes I could plug it into an outlet for awhile (abandoning my contact with 99.9% of the world) . To me 1230mAh seems exceptionally low for a smart phone doesn't it? Especially is you design one with such a power hungry screen? There are tons of things I do love about this phone and I mean tons. But in a year if this isn't resolved I'll remember it as the awesome phone that ate batteries. Lastly though all I can say is thank god for all the brilliant developers who are coming up with commendable ways to stretch our battery life further. And shame on HTC for just standing by on the sidelines.
The thing is, I don't think anything can really be done to make a battey big enough. Yes you can buy some 1300mAH - 1600mAH but they tend to be worse then the 1230mAH we have in the DHD. The software can be optimised but the main thing is the screen. To be honest, the DHD had a design flaw, a slot that was not big enough to house a battery that can contain more than 1230mAH. The only way we can go forward is hope that new battery technology comes out soon, but this is around 3-5 years away from current experiments technology from what I have seen...
But also, other phones are in the same situations. All battery of under 2000mAH will be terrible. Phones if you want it to last would need at least 10000mAH in my opinion, and again we are around 3-5 years away from this happening at the earliest for a credible solution..
Hate to say it but complaining will be fruitless as htc already have your money.

Yes, there is no point complaining because they have no obligation to comply. Even if they really have the technology to provide a better battery, it simply not a viable business strategy to design a new battery for a phone that soon to be replace by next generation of androids. Its not just HTC, every business is like this, they provide a good product, but always reserve better for the next product cycle. Thats why most updated technology usually takes 5-10years to actually reach consumer market.
I don't think the battery of the HTC Desire HD is so bad, I easy get about 1 day and 12 hours with all options on, ofcourse I don't use battery comsuming apps like twitter, I mean if you are so active with a phone then most smartphones will barely make the day.
I think we should be happy that the battery is removeable, just look at the iPhone, the battery is not removeable and to extend the battery life they need use a external battery, no thanks then I rather carry one spare battery with me for just in case I would need it.

That is the technology I head about 6 months ago... now widely reported... this is what will solve our battery problem... Having 1500mAH won't do anything about from extend the life for a few hours.
Too bad we are 3-5 years for it to get anywhere near market consumption

Well the main power consuming piece of hardware inside our phone is the screen.
Qualcomm have invented a new type of display called the mirasol display, and it uses a lot less power than the traditional LCD. Since HTC and Qualcomm are partners we could be seeing this type of display in future HTC devices.

This obviously doesn't solve the root cause, but if you're willing to spend around 50 USD google for something like "PB-5000 Phone Charger", it's 5000mAh...
my Desire HD has the exact same issue, with only 10-12 hrs maximum with half the features off. i am seriously considering buying the HTC Desire, just for the sake of the battery.
there is a very easy and acceptable solution for this problem. can't they make a charging case or a charging cover or a case holding the 2nd battery being in action for the HTC Desire HD? they have done it for the iPhone. i have mailed so many companies with this idea (including mugen and HTC), however no one replied.
I also have a question: how much does LeeDroid improve the battery issue??? as in how many more hrs does it give me?

What kind of services are you running?
I listen to music to and from work, wifi is on all day at work + listen to music and watch a video or two. LiveProfile is on all day as well. I normally don't use Livewallpapers. A charge will last all day for me with this typical usage. Now, If I start rocking "Dungeon Hunter" or some other game or am using GPS then battery goes way down and I have to hit the trickle charge at work ( USB to Computer )
I normally charge overnight.
It is a Smartphone with a huge screen and chip, it's not a MOTO RAZR.

Sounds pretty good. I like my DHD and all its awesome functions but having to be so careful about battery consumption really is a pain in the ***. The phone's screen is pretty darn nice to look at, but I have it set to 25% brightness just to keep consumption down a bit. Seriously, using the DHD's screen for 4 hours the battery is almost empty.
I'd really have no problem settling with a 'less pretty' screen if it would mean I could use my phone for more than 4 hours a day.

My typical use during a day:
-Unplug it at around 8:00
-Making calls for about 30 minutes
-Sending ~25 SMS
-Internet for about 2 hours (1 hour wifi and 1 hour 3G/H)
-Listening to music for about 1 hour
-Checking my awesome team in RunFootball ~5 times a day
-Plug it in at around 22:00
At 22:00, the battery is usually down to below 15%. I have GPS, BT, wifi and 3G off unless actively using them. With my screen brightness set at a low 25% the maximum screen time I can get out off my DHD is 4 hours. There are no rogue apps running in the background.
Honestly, a phone with this type of power consumption needs atleast an 1800mAh battery to last me through a day without me worrying about it.
I dont want to flame, but i have some deal to switch my Desire HD for S2.
is it really that worth ? I mean, i am amazed with Hd (custom rom ofc) and battery life (around 2-2.5 days) and i read about S2 having bigger issues with battery (around maybe 1d) :/

As someone on this forum said , the S2 is only a software update away from being the most powerful smartphone around ( not taking the 4.65" screen on Nexus into account ). Adreno205 and 1GHz Snapdragon on Desire HD just can't compare to SGS2. And about the battery, one day is enough really , who uses their phone for 24 straight hours... Jack Bauer maybe -.-

That, you can do, of course.
My dad has a Desire HD and it's slow as ****. I would never consider or recommend anyone getting a DesireHD over a Galaxy S 2.

Are you kidding me? I had a desire HD also it had a 1230 mah battery and lasted 8 hours max for me. My galaxy s II easily lasts 2 days if I want it to (with about 5 hours screen on time). Try CheckRom or Androidmeda if you do get the Galaxy S II. But if you have enough money, you should get the Nexus. Its the best phone out right now

Its a very, very good phone, hopefully good enough to grab the phone of the year award. If youre up to a bit of tinkering you can make an amazing phone into one so awesome it could slap the baby jesus and walk away unscathed.
Its a definite jump from the DHD but as with all tech, increase the power and screen real-estate without a jump in battery technology and you do get worse battery life. With the frankenstein ki3 rom and speedmod12 kernel I get around a day and a half to two out of it with low to medium use.

I bought an s2 two days ago. Moved from a desire HD.
I was getting about 30 hours using rcmic runny rom. I was happy with it but fancied a change.
I have rooted and unlocked the s2. I have tried CM7 and MIUI roms but have come back to a Samsing KK5 rom with a few minor tweaks.
I have siyah 2.3 kernal overclocked to 1.4 ghz.
Battery life is about the same ss the desire HD but i have noticed that the samsung takes twice as long to recharge.
One thing i do need to say. This is a very very fast device.
I loved my desire HD but the s2 is a better device all round.

if you've already bought it then perhaps u can try CheckROM Revo HD 4.0 with the latest speedmod kernel
for me its the best combination if u want better battery performance

Not sure where you're getting your info from but the Desire HD's got worse battery life than the Galaxy S2.
I was one of the DHD early adopters back in late 2010 and yes, as someone else mentioned here, it's slow as **** compared to the SGS2. I don't know why anyone would prefer the DHD over the SGS2. My phone lasts me 2-2.5 days just with a rooted stock 2.3.5/2.3.6 ROM. I only use SetCPU and App Quarantine to freeze apps.

i have had the desire hd and its not in the same league on any front. better everything honestly. Dont be worried about the battery. custom rom and kernel and it will easily last you the FULL day on heavy use.

You can get the official 2000mAh extended battery from Samsung like me, and battery life will be even better. With this battery I have not once gotten mad about my phone switching off during the day, somehow my battery life has increased with 50%.
Anyway, Desire HD to Galaxy S II is a good move. First of all, the screen are just as big, but the Desire HD screen looks ugly and washed out compared to the beautiful sAMOLED+ display on the S II.
Second you upgrade from an old Snapdragon processor to Dual core exynos, which is seriously must faster.
I also believe the camera is better on the S II.

Regarding battery! Basically he is comparing his personal use on dhd with reports of power users on sgs2. In short if your dhd lasted you with your usage pattern 2-2.5 days you're sure to be within 3-5 range on sgs2 provided you continue to use it the same way.

Btw, i am mid user.. 10-15 calls, 1h wifi/day...when i first got DHD, my batt after few weeks lasted less then a day..like 15-16h... Then i rooted and falshed few rooms, stayed on Virtuos. Now i have 2-2.5 days mid usage...1-3mAh (Batt Monitor Widget).

Well i had an hd2 and came from 1-3 mAh to 30-60 mAh on the s2 with the same apps installed. On the hd2 there was even more syncing enabled and wifi and gps always on. But everything else is better on the s2.

i use both at the moment. GS2 is faster with much nicer screen, youll probably miss sense until you get used to touchwiz or run a different launcher, (launcher pro has virtually the same widgets), but overall the GS2 is definitely worth it.
Dont expect the same battery life though, no matter what rom you put on the GS2 but as long as you get through the day and stick it on charge its no problem is it.
I've unplugged 2 and a half hours ago, its already on 48% lol. Don't flash a miui ROM.

I swear this thing does nothing when on standby. Screen on time is at just over two hours and yet the stats are amazing. Interestingly I'm on my third one, the other two were NOTHING like this.

So am I. Typically 30 to 40% battery left. With my iphone and SIII, both were dead by the end of the day.
PS. I use the power saver function.

Couldn't agree more... I am only on the first "One" . But battery life is fantastic compared to my S3. My current stats are showing 54% remaining after 26:25 hours. Estimated remaining time is 33 hours. That's with a little bit of 4G usage and 30 minutes talk time. Total screen time is showing at 1.03 hours.
By this time of the day, with similar usage, by S3 was sitting under 50% and would remain for another 6 hours. I was originally very worried about the non-removable battery, but with performance like this I am no longer worried!

Sadly im one of those that seems to have got a poor battery life after swapping
My 1st unit was AMAZING, just like the screenshot in 1st post, i could go a full day at work with 80%+...now ive got my replacement unit I noticed the difference straight away
In about 30 mins im losing like 10%+ even on standby
My old phone I saw well over 1d 15 hours on battery before i saw it go into abotu 15% battery...win some lose some.
However I am getting another replacement...fingers crossed

No offence, but the Xperia Z is better. The One may be good, but it's not the very best.
It has really good battery life considering the 1080 p screen and those dual speakers with boom sound.
Guys please consider the battery to note 2, it is a phablet with a gigantic battery. It somewhat like comparin nexus 7 with HTC one, difference between the n7 and note 2 screen size is only 1.5 inches

Best standby I have ever seen on a phone is the iphone5 to be honest. But the One definitely isn't far behind.
For me coming from an iPhone 5 and before that iPhone 4 and before that numerous other phones..this HTC one has been the best for battery life by far. I'm averaging battery life of 17 hours according to gsam battery app... I never would have imagined getting battery life like that and I am not on power saving mode. And as for the note 2. I would hope it bas better battery...it's not that much bigger (screen) and it has a 3100mah battery compared to 2300 in the one.

I'm lucky to get 8 hours. I'm not impressed at all. I had to charge it twice just to able to do some photography.
My recent past phones were an iPhone 5, galaxy s3, and note 2. Only the 5 had worse battery.
I have undervolted, have lte off and It drains fast when the screen is on. Who cares about standby. How does it actually last with use.
the battery has been very inconsistent for me ever since i got the phone a few weeks ago. sometimes i can go the entire day just fine and other times i need to charge by 6 pm. it definitely wouldnt last an extra day if i forgot to charge it before going to bed.

I don't have any hard evidence but this phone kills my Sensation. I would use about 1 hours of actual usage in a day while the rest of the time is in standby with wifi, and I can get through my 8 hour day with about 60% to 70% left. My sensation would have been near 20%, and I have to charge it if I use it more often. I am really impressed.

My One also handily beat my friends' S3 and iPhone 4S as well. I have never used a phone which I didn't worry about the battery near the end of the day - this is the first.

I already have one. I am here to present unbiased facts, while some people seem to be blinded by ignorance. As previously stated I was in the market for an additional device for my fiance, and the One came up. Also if you actually read thru the responses from the One users, there is a lot of mixed responses not just praise.

I have the S3 as well as the One and my S3 and my One have approx similar screen on times but the S3 has longer total up-times with similar screen on time. With the H1, u need power saving on ALL the time to get decent battery life.
The S4 will eat up this phone in terms of battery life.
Getting back to my original point, the H1 does NOT have the best battery life ever of any phone.

I too agree, it's been unrealistically good on standby. Granted I'm rooted with some bloat removed + Greenify.
Yesterday got 22 hours, 4:33H screen on, 4G on all day, power saver off.

I use Greenify as well and it makes huge difference. Currently at 3 hours of screen time, with 60% left! Lost only 2% overnight.

honestly, if they just put a 4000mAh in it, I wouldn't mind if it weren't replaceable. And I seriously doubt with the kind of perfomance/specs its gonna have, anyone would really mind the extra thickness either. Not to mention heft (cough, durability).
It's not how big the tank K is but how much less is sippped from the tank
Nexus 5 so battery is 75% if G2
But battery life on nexus 5 is far less than 75 percentage of G2 albeit having a smaller screen

it looks promising but i would take this article with a grain of salt. I want to see a article or a video with alot of apps and features turned on this reviewed. i believe that would be a real battery review
Still, LG hasn't outed official talk, standby, browsing and video playback times yet, so we can only guesstimate the battery life of the G3 to be pretty good, based on some tangential proof from improvised battery tests that are popping up.
First off, a prototype version of the phone has been put through its paces, and the phone lasted six and a half hours of video playback on a charge, as you can see from the screens on the right. That might seem average, but the test has been done at the screen's*maximumbrightness, which*LG officially pegs at 430 nits, instead of the usual 150 or 200 nits, so the result from standardized routines like our own battery test, are likely to be much higher.*
Also so the test was at basically 2× brightness of a normal screen. ... so at lower brightness it should do very well

Thanks to the removable battery I couldn't care less about battery life you can always take one or even two with you and go through half a week without ever needing to charge your phone good job LG :good:

Is it really nice to always have a secondary batt and most time having to turn off phone then replace. I quite don't like that and I don't see that very cute at all. Maybe it's how I feel but that for me just seems not right.

I would totally have taken a 3500mAh stuck battery like in G2(not impossible to remove after some years) instead of 3000mAh removable.

I never said 3000mAh isnt enough, but 3500mAh would last longer and most people dont run around with an extra battery in their pocket even if they can. Saving 1-2 hours of work to replace a battery like in the G2 after 1-3 years isnt really that much.

Of course they did, but they are catering to the people who are stuck in the old days when smartphones didnt last as long and batteries died much faster. Sure batteries degrade still, but if they hold longer between the charges and with more improvment it would be years between needing to change it. LG did the right thing with G2, but people arent smart enough to see it, so LG had to go back to the old ways to win the heart of the stuck.

Okay, what I'm saying is if they have thought then it'll make no sense for that regard. If so, then the 3000mAh batt along with their Optimization makes it enough to have that battery.
Like for example, there are different desktop power supplies but some of them are different quality. A 3 star 1200w quality desktop supply could be equivalent to a 5 star 800w quality supply.
