[HowTo] Stop PPP drops UPDATED - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

He guys
There is an update that seems to eliminate all drops.
Fix for PPP disconnects
Edit: It is still not fixed yet.
I have some spare time at work and I wanted to update those people having issues with their data connection. I know it's not funny to read all posts, so I wanted to tell you what I have done to get my data connection as stable as it is now (no drops since the last 3 days )
Well, Okay, I have to say it worked for me after updatin to hastarin #7.5. Hastarin's Kernels. But those are tipps that I read in serveral posts and all of them seem to work for some people. So just try out what's best for you.
Before you do any of those steps, be always sure you have done a backup before editing. I don't want to see people here crying cause of a destroyed build.
1. Be sure you have a newer radio, I think the 2.14 has improved the signal again in comparison to 2.12.
2. Update the wrapper posted here, that really makes a difference. Maybe it even kills all you drops. Just copy it into system/lib/.
3. Change the DNS settings in the build.prop file (found in system/).
Original:
net.ppp0.dns1=8.8.8.8
net.ppp0.dns2=8.8.4.4
Change those to your DNS settings of your provider found here.
Mine looks like this:
net.ppp0.dns1=212.35.35.35
net.ppp0.dns2=212.35.35.5
Let the net.dns entries as they are.
Edit: The DNS entries didn't work for me (problem with my provider).
4. Change the setting found in the menu phone info when you "call" *#*#4636#*#*. There is a option to choose your preferred network. Take GSM auto (PRL)
5. At last, disable automatic task killing by task managers and uninstall autokiller or set it to no tweaks btw. original (better to uninstall everything, as you know, task managers aren't needed anymore in 2.2 )
I've you have done all this steps, make a reboot. If it doesn't work now or if you have still much drops, I have to say you are a poor guy

I updated to Darkstone's 3.2 last night, and then I disabled the auto task killer. So far I have yet to have any data drops!

Was the same for me, mattc 1.8 and hastarin 7.5. But there are many people having this issue. So you are a lucky guy

Complete lockup on Data Reconnect.

The issue occurs about 9 times out of 10. My wifi functions properly. Whenever I edit my wireless settings or turn the wifi off, therefore telling the phone to connect back to edge, the phone will lock up completely.
Unlocked HD2 on AT&T, running ChuckyDroid and Bangsters 1.3b
Steps I've taken to replicate the issue:
Turn on wifi or airplane mode (causing Edge to disconnect)
Turn wifi or airplane mode off (causing Edge to attempt a reconnect)
OR
Edit APN/check the 2g only box, causing a disconnect/reconnect of edge
Result:
Complete lockup, no functioning buttons or screen (cant even turn the phone's screen off). The only way to rectify this is by removing the battery.

I had freezing issues with Bangsters PPP build too, and I just switched to mccm SE 1.0 build (stable)
You can try first disabling all data connections on WinMo prior to booting Android like some people have suggested and see if this helps you.

can you link me to that android build? bangsters is the first build I've found with MMS working...
I switched my phone to airplane mode on windows mobile, pre-boot. it seems to have worked, hopefully its not a temporary fix.

A few people have reported this to be working people well for PPP builds. If not try mccm, but remember to change the APN settings to get MMS working.
You need to use a RMNET build (or switch to rmnet support) until PPP hard freeze issues are fixed.

I had the exact same problems with the cell data. You need to use rmnet since ppp builds are far.to unstable for normal use.

Man that really blows. I very much like this build so far, the freezing on data reconnect is very strange. I also experience the drop of data connection from time to time, and the only way to get it to come back on is to reboot (so far as I can tell at this point)
There is something of note I forgot...
At first when I tried shubcraft the cell data was stable most of the.time and didn't cause lockups on reconnects. It was a few days later it suddenly turned and would lockup after only 1 or 2 minutes uptime.
Usually the ppp builds I used where just unstable in general with 2 or 3 lockups a day.
Shubcraft basically had an aneurism.

+1 had the exact same thing happen to me...forced me to switch to the rmnet version
im using shubcraft, it locked up switching from wifi to data, even going from airplane mode back to data. going in and out of apn settings would lock up also. after ive change kernel it seems to disappear. what radio are you guys using. i had unstable data connection on 2.12.50 now im using 2.10.50.26 data is stable for a week now.
give this kernel a shot, might help might not. its from huanyu
Code:
[url=http://www.multiupload.com/FQJ1HXE14K]BFQ-AXI_925mv-0.1.a.zip[/url]: OC +UV + AXI (with reduce delay tweaking) + BFQ
I had the exact same problem with darkstone froyo sense!! it is due to unstable PPP drivers. But I liked PPP because of the speed and didn't want to give up on it.
And this build solved my problem. Its built from darkstone froyo sense so its very similar but has some added features and stable PPP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773790
I use the SE 1.0 version. it is rmnet but you can switch it to PPP by changing the startup.txt file. You just need to add a command to the cmdline to start it into PPP.
Some other things you can try are.
Put the phone in Airplane mode in WinMO before booting Android.
use RMNET version. slow but stable.

DEV: PPP Issues. Improvement + Summary

This possibly needs to be in the dev section but I will start here.
First off this is not a complaint. What I initially want to do is get an understanding (Technical) of the issues around the PPP dropouts and locks ups.
From where I sit this is the only outstanding issue around the current android builds. Simply the phone rocks on SD card and is ultra stable and fun.
I have noticed various wiki'sstate that internet access is complete however obviously not.
There are a number of issues such as
1: Network dropout. Data connectivity will stop responding. Restart of the radio or mobile data needed
2: Network freeze. Android restart as the radio will not turnoff.
3: console level networking not avail. Eg ping etc simply does not work. DNS does not resolve and ping cannot find a route. Std Android this works fine.
4: Related issues. GPS-A data not downloadable. Only via application layer tool.
Is PPP the default connection type on factory android builds?
What is the difference between the HD2 in dev and a std android with the implementation of the data connection.
How can I help. I have over 20 years in IT and have a thorough understanding of TCP IP layers and routing. I have reasonable understanding of Linux and the kernel IP stack but zero understanding of the android kernel or application layer.
I also have dollars to contribute.
Update:
Currently I am trying all four with isome improvements
1: Updated the Ril WRapper with no luck.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794309
2: Change the phones default connection to GSM PL.
Change the setting found in the menu phone info when you "call" *#*#4636#*#*. There is a option to choose your preferred network. Set to GSM auto (PRL)
3: Update DNS settings.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812930
4: Ensure the correct APN's are being used.
This is no internet versus unstable Internet.
Note. Currently trying all four and things are improving. Had my first dropout after 36 hours versus 2 per day. It happened whilst using the GPS and making a call which always tend to be a stresser anyway. Will try to keep this thread updated.
This thread also has a number of updates http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813148
I am running a stock WinMo Rom (Latest European release 3.14 I believe). 2.15 radio on a Telstra Network in Australia. My phone is a T8585. Also running [19.10.10]|<<Mdeejay FroYo Sense Series>>|2.25.771.1| cos I like the transparent titlebars
Now I have been running all 4 of the above for around a week now and have to say there is a def improvement. Where it was common to get multiple disconnects per day I have only had 3 in the last week. Mainly when I use the GPS.
I am still searching and have yet to find a 100% fix the stability is now at a point of reasonable reliable. Also noted that the Devs are still hard at work on this.
Update 31-10-2010
A good test is to open google maps while driving. Its about the only time I get a drop out now.
The GPS kicking in always stresses the radio and that combined with the handover of cell sites is a great deal breaker.
This also seems to be consist with my suspicions around the poor handling of corrupt connections.
Eg the system on fresh boot only has a table for handling 50 connections line. This ensures it can handle multiple simultaneous connections as well as background coms.
Now when a connection is damaged or locked normally it should timeout and/or then be deleted from the table. My suspicions is that this is not happening and all the avail connection handling are slowly filling up until there are now free. Frozen this is why it seems to be very unlikely for a freeze to occur straight after a restart but more likely after a day. Also dependent on stress environments. Homes with lots of RF noise, Long way from cell towers, driving, lots of gps use, Wifi cut over.

Thanks for the response.
I was not looking for work around but more technical information to try and identify where the issue lies. curious to see if ppp is the default and if the ppp implementation should work or is it still a hack/work around.
The steps I have tried are
1: Updated the Ril WRapper with no luck. No improvement
2: Change the phones default connection to GSM PL. No improvement
3: Update DNS settings. Still testing however does not resolve console level network issues and unlikely related to ppp freeze. No logic?
4: Ensure the correct APN's are being used. No improvement
Note. Currently trying all three
This is also separate to a lot of people issues around APN's. From the application layer internet works fine except for the freeze.
I believe rmnet is android's default connection and ppp is winmo's. I think dft reengineered ppp for Android. Remember seeing it some where when ppp first started to appear. Of course this is how I remember it and my life is hectic so it might be the opposite.

So I understand that one of the issues with RMNET was dropped packets. Was this due to it not being correctly engineered/implemented or just a nature of the beast?
Also with the issues everyone is having why are we not continuing to investigate RMNET as at least this was initially more stable and more of a native option.

That is because it isn't implemented correctly. The radio receiver in our phones was made for PPP, not for RMNET. Latter is standard in native android devices. And there it works very fast and stable. So the devs had to implement PPP in android, which isn't proper working. But they're working on it to improve the stability, I'm pretty sure 'bout that. At least it does work and I had never problems with loosing my connection and bad speeds.
Edit: Those are the known steps to get it at least halfways stable working.
Cheers
Okay.
Did some more playing.
Both RMNET and PPP allow pinging from the console. Just had to enable SU first.
Thanks everyone for your info. Will try my best to be patient.

But did you also have a delay till it worked? It took me about 20 seconds before any reply came up. And does your ping test work if you try it in the hidden menu when you "call" *#*#4636#*#*?
Aye.
There was a delay and the hidden menu ping does not work either.
Still needs work.

Right.
Have you seen this thread? It might be a possible solution.
Some people have reported that it works. But I had no time to test it. Had to move servers
That is fix number 3. Update DNS. Testing now. Only been 24 hours however no drops.
Seems strange thou. Hard to imagine it is a DNS issue.
On a side note. Does anyone know what changes to the Rom are needed when installing an RMNET kernel?
Eg If I took the latest MDeejay rom and changed the kernel?
Update
Update on first post.
Def improvements to be found. DNS seems to be the biggest improvement for me but also running all 4 at once.

No one who knows cares enough to answer.
As far as I can tell, no 'modern' build uses an rmnet kernel anymore, because apparently the chefs either don't care about data reception, or don't think that there is a problem because they don't leave a build on long enough for it to start developing problems.

any build that says it uses michyprima r11 is still rmnet based. I don't think the nexus one-based kernels worked with ppp at all.
on another note, I was getting loads of Network Freezes (where flicking airplane mode wouldn't reset the data connection) since last week despite not fundamentally changing anything in my Android setup (see sig). However been doing some research around xda yesterday and may have found something else that's improved my ppp connection stability (so far) and resolved my constant network freeze issue... will update when I've tested this for a few more days.
Some improvment?
APNs are correct, Did the RIL_WRAPPER with no significant improvment. This morning I changed to GSM PRL and noticed an improvment.
Before the GSM PRL, I had many PPP drops, especially when streaming large amounts of data. After the GSM PRL update, I did try streaming youtube, Last.FM, slingpalyer together and NetTest, concurrently, everything is working with no PPP drop.
This is not enough to reach a conclusion, but nevertheless, I never could have done it before
Have a look here.
Stock rom 1.48 WWE, radio 2.15.50 and Froyostone 3.2
Thanks for the support!
BTW: How can I obtain the DNS information for my mobile carrier?
Just report.
I didn't believe change dns will work.
But after I change dns, the data suddenly work ( no need to restart!).
So I think it have something relate to dns.
Same thing. Updating the DNS in the build.pro file seems to have the greatest benefit.
I have a suspicion that the issues are caused with the network driver not flushing dead connections. Eg outgoing requests that to not get a reply. Ideally they should be flushed other wise the connection cache will fill until it can no longer take more connections. Symptom dead/frozen internet
All the symptoms seem to relate to this sort of issue
Things like ppp drop out more likely when on the move (More dropped packets). GPS and wifi but back. etc.
@Dusty_Nz,
Thanks for your help, this is a great thread and its certainly appreciated (the devs are busy enough as it is, xda member contributions are a great help).
As it was asked a few posts up, how do I obtain the DNS settings for my carrier? I am using TMobile US and I'd like to test your observations.
Thanks!

[Q] Data Connection Problems

Hi,
since some time, I am experiencing problems with my data connection. I dont really now, why but those persist through changes of AndroidOS, Radio and WM-ROM.
The Facts: HD2 european version, Operator: O2 Germany
The Problem in detail: When I am at home, I want to use my WLAN connection but some times, it doesnt connect to it. I have to manually go into the menu and reset my wlan-connection, so it works. Much more annoying is the fact, that when I am not at home (and WLAN is out of range), the phone often doesnt connect HSPA/3G/GSM/whatever and programms like maps, opera etc just claim to not having a data connection ready, though there are 2 to 4 bars. Only way to solve this -> go to flight mode, thet deactivate flight mode OR deactivate data connection, then reacivate it. Either way its annoing and mails won't be downloaded in this time, too.
My first setups, when I didnt have this problem where with WM OZDroid ROM, 2.12.50.XX Radio and many different Androidbuilts (no working compass / lightsensor etc - you know for sure ) Then I got to MDJ-Roms which I really liked and I never used another since those times. Still no Problems.
Then, by some time, I installed a new MDJ ROM - Mdeejay_FroYo_Sense_v._1.1_Clean_R75. This Rom needet to have PIN-auth disabled in Windows or it hung up in LOOP ( ). Sadly I installed a new WM-ROM and radio at the same time (I know, never change multiple parts at once... ugh!). Those where VBNDroid-Reloaded2-21913-Oct08 and Radio 2.15.50.14.
Since that time, I have this strange connection problem. I allready changed back to an oZDroid version and tried Radio 2.12 and 2.15. As Android ROM, i used MDJ eVo Sense Revolution 1.8 and now Mdeejay_FroYo_Revolution_v._1.6_S3. - Still the same problems.
I allready had the idea to reactivate PIN-auth but this option doesnt exist in my actual WM-OzDroid ROM.
Is there anyone experiencing the same problems or able to give me a hint in this case? I'am really not one of those persons "gimmie a new OS and I kill you if it doesnt work" - I know Android is work-in-progress but with all those superb fixes in past (lightsensor, compass etc) i cannot believe that a basic part like internet connection isnt working properly.
Thanks a lot for helping me out,
cmoe
RMNET
I think you'll find plenty of others who have had the same problem and some have had success with changing builds, kernels etc. There's plenty of stuff out there if you search on it.
I used to have data problems but switched to RMNET rather than PPP. You need to use a build that allows you to change this though and luckily for me, Bangsters 1.5 is such a build. It's not a sense build.
RMNET gets a bad press for it's speed, but to be honest it is perfectly ok for browsing the web. I leave all my downloading and updating till I'm on WiFi at home.
Regards your wifi issue, I have 'power control' widget on my homescreen and just switch WiFi off and on. Much easier than going into settings.

This might sound a bit noobish, but I was wondering if someone can recommend an android ROM which provides a stable data connection with the windows stock ROM WWE 3.14 (Radio 2.15.40) with SPL (not HSPL)
I'm currently using the mdeejay froyo sense (v2.4). The pain for me is that the 3G connection rarely works, even in areas with full bars, and the roamin data connection tends to drop out a fair bit as well despite full bars. I've tried rebooting, and that normally works but it is real pain to have to reboot on so many occasions (not to mention slow). I tried switchin to airplane mode and then switching the mobile network on again, but that doesn't seem to work.

[Q] Non-n00b assistance required for running Android on the HD2

Hello all,
I have an O2 UK HD2 and I am trying to port across to Android. I already own a Dell Streak running 2.1 and i'd like 2.2 on my HD2.
I've read through a lot of post and believe I know enough to do this - but I am having recurring issues which I cannot seem to get around.
Before I got serious with this, I simply flashed a high version number radio and jumped right into the first android build I could download. The issues were the robotic voice and I cannot get an internet connection (although I have the 'H' icon continuously).
I read up, did some research and followed lots of instructions.
So far i've downloaded several 'android friendly' WinMo ROMS:
Energy.Leo.29005.Sense2.5.Dec.13
Energy.Leo.28244.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Nov.16
Miri_Steve0007_Elegancia_V1.0_CHT2_FINAL
Miri_Steve0007_EleganciaMaxSense_V5.0_FINAL
I have the following radios:
2.10.50.19_2
2_10_50_26
2_11_50_26
2_12_50_02_2
2_15_50_14
And the following android's:
FroyoStone_Sense_V3.2
SuperRAM_Froyo_v1
I've not got the time to swap and change radio/rom/android build 25 times just to find a working version - but needless to say the amount of swapping i've done so far is providing no change to my issues above.
I want my internet to work and I want no robot voice.
Does anyone know, from the list above, what selection of the 3 items do I need to get this to work once and for all?
Also, i'd prefer to be using the semi-recent stock ROM for O2 HD2 as I don't like custom ROMs, has anyone got android working on the stock O2 ROM?
Thanks in advance
Dan

same here.
Just a suggestion, try this mix (works for me giving 3-6mA standby):
Dutty v11 (Christmas ROM)
2.12.50.xx
mdeejay revolution 1.7
everything works.
Thank-you both.
I've just started a download of the 3.14 stock ROM build, as i've got a network .cab that should install my O2 network settings for me.
The lack of internet connectivity means the phone is useless in android mode, so i'm going to give it one last try once i've upgraded my stock ROM and see if I can't get it working. I doubt I will though, but at least i'll have the most up to date WM ROM going.
I assume your net connections simply 'worked'?
I don't think you need a stock Tom, but you definitely need different builds.
The froyostone 3.2 is a discontinued build and likely doesn't have the latest kernels, wrappers, patches etc that have greatly improved many peoples android experience.
on the other hand, superram is highly beta, and is in the process of being revised and improved by darkstone.
Basically you hit both ends of the spectrum in terms of maturity. Try a couple of other builds and see what happens. I recommend going with a build that uses hastarin 8.5+ as the kernel, buy only because for some reason mdjs kernels have never worked for me. Other people say very good things about it though.
One thing you should pay special attention to is the changelog. Usually this will indicate how far along (and how often) the build is being updated.

I know the stock ROM isn't a requirement, in fact i'm pretty sure it's almost detrimental - but i've spent 3 days faffing around with this and i'm literally having to go back to WinMo with nothing to show for my troubles.
Basically i'm upgrading to 3.14 now and trying android one last time, knowing full well it's probably not going to work but still, can't help trying can it. If it fails, at least i'm on the newest WinMo build, and i've still got my Dell Streak with a pending 2.2 upgrade at some point this week.

Hi, the internet issues are with the network not a WiFi router. The internet simply refuses to work, even though I have the 'H' icon.

That's why I mentioned the APN settings
I wouldn't be at all surprised if you went into your APN settings and found GiffGaff selected.

Agreed with that, I've had a couple of builds that gave me no data, it was the provider settings that it selected in the first setup sequence. you can manually change them (the o2 webpage should have them, or try some of the o2 one from here: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/wiki/APNlist) and you should be golden.
Try creating new APNs, deleting old ones

I can second that. I've had problems with numerous builds and APN settings. I personally found (after a lot of frustration) that double checking the the settings was not enough, rather I needed to add completely new APNs using the info from my provider. Apparently some of the settings were different when the APNs were added manually than the default ones (MCC, MNC?), which were not specified by the provider and I therefore could not check if correct with the original APNs, if you know what I mean. As for builds, I personally recommend JDMS or HD2ONE for a good combination of speed, reliability and functionality; I personally like some of the CyanogenMod features like the power bar in the status bar, menu button to unlock, etc. Good luck!
I'm currently trying out Ginger HD2 (Gingerbread themed build, but still 2.2). That was set to GiffGaff at first, but there were a couple of O2 ones in there and the first choice worked for me. I've had this in a couple of other builds too. I guess some builds come with plenty of APNs, and some come with none.
Definitely start there though.
sounds familure.im using energy Leo rom and a 2.15.50 radio and an mdj desire hd build, that work fine now, just make sure you disable htc sence in the winmo before you boot android, see if that works
Hi guys
Thanks for the replies above.
It would appear the Android builds I was using weren't giving me this 'APN' setup option, ironically I only just installed a build now that gives me the popup once it's read my SIM card to select a network - so now I know what you mean by APN, I think.
Anyway, i'm glad to report that I have stock 3.14WWE and an Android build w/sense working perfectly (I can't remember the name but it's none of the builds I listed in the OP), albeit if left overnight, has become a little laggy, but I don't care as a quick reboot sorted it this morning.
Thankyou all for your responses.

[Q] CM 7.0.3 wildfire data connection toggle lag

hello there,
i rooted my wildfire a few days back & flashed CM 7.0.3 stable mod and now im experiencing a lag in data connection toggle.
once the phone is rebooted/turned on i can enable data access over mobile network, but after a while i can not... even though the data enable box is ticked & when i check the network type, it remains at HSDPA.
to re-enable data, i have to reboot or put the phone into airplane mode & back!
hope u guys can help me out!
cheers
same problem here!
i suggest u to move over to CM7 nightlies builds..its more stable then the "stable" 1 and seem so good so far..
I dont have any problems, uses the same cm7, but with latest radio, try changing the radio, else check if u had changed some thing in settings-wireless and networks, or check for some apks like autorun manager or task killers which ends some system applications/process,as some of them are critical for running android os,like android keyboard which when disabled makes your onscreen keyboard disàppear, even though u use some other keyboard input method like better keyboard app.
And i am dam sure that its not a bug in cm7, just becoz as we all know android is an os which largely depends on internet for its functioning, so the developer will take much more care in data connection codes, and a bug like this wont happen. So get a whole check, ur problem will be solved.
