[Q] Wake up lag - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

With every android ROM I've tried so far, I always experience a lag from when I press a button to when the screen switches on.
It's always at least 1 second long, and sometimes much longer.
My question is: 1. Is this normal? 2. Is there any way to stop it?

1. Yes that's completely normal, I have also had this on every ROM
2. No, not that I know of, but some kernels have less lag. For me, michyprima's r11 gave a lot more lag than my current kernel hastarin's r7.6. Now it's barely noticable, with only like half a second between the button press and the actual screen wake up

Hastarins latest kernal is pretty damn nice. Wake lag is minimul

Did you ever try with another key than the End Call key?

I have the same issue, other keys doesn't work at all. For example, display turns off
- I hold (press doesn't work) the End call key, after couple of seconds the display turns back
- I press any other Key, display is "locked" means I have to wait like 10-30 sec until I can hold End Key to turn the Display back, that's very annoying.
This happens in this Miui builds, like "mccm SE 2.0/2.5 up date version build"
I had before FroyoStone Sense - V3.1 build from DarkStone which didn't had this problem. Didn't try the 3.2 build yet. For me it was a build issue.

I always had this until i used Phiremod Android
Its brilliant! Works like it should.
Go try it! NOW!

I think it also depends on the unit. A friend of mine only got his hd2 last month. We have the same android build, setup, sd, winmo rom, radio...but his hd2 wakes up fast as in fast. It is like it is running native on android. No matter what build he use, it wakes up the same. And his android reaches upto 2 days with moderate use, with me it is 9 hrs only.

Power up delay

When i press the power button, there's a 0.5s delay before the screen turns on. Is this normal, or just with mine?
You flashed it with anything or running stock?

Any custom kernels for lagfix / oc?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Nope, just flashed jm2, and rooted, nothing else.
Dunno then, might be normal. Its even worse with the lagfix kernel.

Hmm ok, thanks for you fast reply's!
OMG! are you guys for real!
this is >insert slur here<
a fraction of a second for the screen to turn on from off is normal on any phone device.
....
Don't label me with the same brush as the op. I was trying to ascertain if he had the startup lag from the custom kernel used for the lag fix with samset. I said it was probably normal - I refrained from calling him an impatient fussy so and so. Abuse him all you like, leave me out of it.

How is this normal on any device? as my touch diamond didn't have it, my ****ty nokia 5800 didn't have it, my htc artemis, htc tytn II, do i need to continue?
It's 0.5s-1.5s. But mostly 0.5s, that's why i said that.
If you don't have a solution, just don't post , i flashed jp3 to try it out, and the delay i've got from jm2 is gone. Hmmm, guess the delay wasn't normal after all.
Damn, i feel like i'm on a chatbox with 12-year old's.
And no, i don't mean Bynar010 to be clear.
Hello all.
This wake up lag is killing me, coz its 1.5s most of the time.
I did apply the lag fix kernel, and that was worse at times. So now i simply reflashed it (JM5 now) and removed the SD card.
Is there anything else I gotta to to remove this fix, or re-flashing removes it ok?
Thanks in advance
I am also having this problem. It can be anywhere from half to three seconds . I have just flashed to jm5 and applied the one click internal lag fix. Anyone know what I can do to fix this. Thanks in advance.
Same problem here on JM2 + 1 click lag fix. I previously use JM2 + memocan and not found this problem. Wondering why others with 1 click lag fix didn't realize this since it's very longer (mine's about 3 sec).
3 second is nothing...
just pressing the POST button to this took more than 3 sec
In that case not only this phone sux, but your internet connection isn't much better..
Please just reply if you can help us with this problem. I like the phone, but the power-on delay is just annoying. I use it instead of a watch too. Wouldn't you care if you had to look at least 3 seconds at your watch before you could see the time, EVERY time you looked?
As i said, this is just annoying, other phones i've owned didn't have a delay like this, not even the WM ones.
i don't know about you, but the last WM phone and PalmOS phone i've had took at least 1 sec to display
yes i use my phone as a watch as well, i don't carry a watch with me
Just to throw it out there, mine lags about 0.25 to 0.5 seconds on average. I'm on JM5 without root.
Do you mean lag when you press the power button to unlock your phone, or when you switch on your phone? It's of course normal during switching on the phone. But I also experience a lag when unlocking the phone (~1 second). It only happens when I haven't used the phone for 5 minutes or more. Doesn't happen if I lock it and immediately try to unlock it again. I believe it's the chipset waking up from sleep or something.
@ AllGamer:
The ones i had: HTC: S100, Artemis, Kaiser, Touch Diamond.
They all went on faster. I didn't have the problem at first (with stock firmware), guess it started after my first flash (to jm2), but the problem stays when i flash back to the stock firmware, that's the strange part..
@ ssj4Gogeta1:
I mean the delay when you press the power (or home) button when the phone is already powered on, and it happens everytime, even when i press the power button, wait 5 seconds, and press it again. Nowdays, it's at least 1.5s every time.
Lol, would be great if i meant the power-on time.
the thing is, all phones i've had, will go slower and slower the more apps i install into them
the same applies to SGS.
to keep them fast, i always only install apps that i'm really going to use.
i used to clam every single piece of software i can put my hands on into the phone before, that always lags the phone to death.... although so far the SGS is holding quite well
still testing out a lot of software, but once i'm done i'm going to stream line it with only the stuff i want in it.
Regarding the delay with the Home button, that is not the same as Power button.
See now we understand you better, it does takes a split second after you wake up the phone with the home button.
however anything longer than 1 sec is not quite right, if you have that sort of lag, try optimizing the phone.
recent firmware updates like JH1 or JH2 depending where you are, have made vast improvement on performance
in the worse case scenario you can try the one click lag fix from the Dev section of the forum
are you still on the stock firmware?

[Q] SoD Confirmed Workaround+Question

Guide:
If you get SoDs as often as I do, you might be getting mad. in fact, you might even go back to WinMo! But, try this tip out.
[0] Disable automatic phone lock / screen time out. (I'm not sure if Aldiko does this)
[1] Download the Aldiko app from the Android marketplace (before you ask, yes, the eBook reader one.)
[2] Start the app and click one of the included books.
[3] Slide your finger from the top left corner of your screen to the bottom left corner of your screen. This is your new "locked" screen.
[4] To unlock your screen, hit the home button and go to your home screen, or phone button and go straight to your phone.
[5] Next time you want to lock your screen, just start the Aldiko app, it should already be a blank screen but if not just slide your finger down again.
Question: Is there any way to make the power/hang up hardware button on your phone start Aldiko?
While I appreciate your creative work around, I've not experienced a hard freeze or touch screen freeze in almost a month.
If your juggling android builds, this can cause corruption in some cases, and can result in said-per SOD.
If your working with an older build, the g-sensor can cause a freeze, but its not quite a hard freeze unless you fiddle with it to the point of it not recovering.
If your using Set CPU and its clocked on the lowest settings, this can cause hard freezes via it being clocked too low to wake up.
These are the main reasons that I've found for my own SOD. My suggestion? Use a WM Rom built specifically for android. Use a RECENT build that specifies that most everything is working. There are some new chefs out there working on builds that aren't quite as polished as some of the more experienced chefs.
Good luck, and may you never experience an SOD again!

The thing about the Windows ROM is bringing up this question. What is the best WM ROM to use? I'm using Miri's V17 but it sucks so much it can't even get the flipping time right... I really hate it, what should I change to?
I'm using ChuckyDroidRom, and its working out pretty well for me. But I cant say its the BEST.

I'll give it a try. Anything is better than a POS that can't even get time right... should probably try Elegancia too, hearing good things about that.
Im using an old energy rom from back in june i believe and i will get a random screen freeze. Maybe one every 3 days. thats it. and my radio is still on 2.10 and i can get through a day of normal use with just one battery. Someone had referred to that aldiko app but thats too much trouble. If your getting that many SOD's then reformat your memory card, add a fresh android build. And try not messing with setcpu. Im using the froyo build by tytung and its running great.
+1 for not having anymore freezes. I have not had 1 freeze in the last 7 days using latest darkstone froyo build. Im also using a old full energy rom from july. Also a class 6 8gb memory card.
I think with all this work that has been done on these kernals and builds have REALLY reduced the SOD's.

AGAIN, PRESS A BUTTON IN WM AND HAVE THE KEYPAD LIGHTS ON.

I AM CURRENTLY GETTING 3MA WITH SETCPU
I had to try this twice before it worked but THE KEY IS TO BOOT ANDROID AS SOON AS THE KEYPAD LIGHYS TURN ON!

I just posted this in another battery thread but I think the real key is booting Android as quickly as possible and not really the lights so much as I have achieved similar results just using Exceller Multiple Build Loader app and not even touching the keys/lights. C/P from the other thread-->
Tried different techniques to get better battery and found that even on the same build with exact same setup would give varying results. Here's my setup that I would like others to try and post their results. SetCpu with screen off profile set to 245min/max 100 priority and whatever main profile you like; but use conservative preferably or interactive for best battery performance. Any task killer that auto kills all tasks with screen off (be sure to add SetCPU to ignore list). And here is the most important step, use an auto android booting app with minimum boot time setting. I have been doing some experiments with this and found that if you boot into Android as soon as possible, it seems to give better battery performance as opposed to playing around in WM then booting Android. Have tried this with several WM/Android combos. For the first time ever I'm able to get comparable battery performance out of Android as WM. I'm running a bare bones WM (but should work with and WM rom) and using Exceller Multiple Build Loader app set to 3 secs. Even running several sense builds I was able to achieve 3-7 mA draw during standby according to current widget. Took my phone off the charger at about 6:30 a.m. and it is now 11:15 and I still have 25% battery left after pretty heavy usage on standard battery. This is as good or better than what I usually get from WM! Hope this helps.
This was the one thing that was ruining my Android on HD2 experience. I finally got this step right after a few tries.
I've been using it for two days now, and getting consistent 5-8mA readings on standby. There's definitely something to either booting Android quickly and/or hitting the back button to turn on the LED backlight on the buttons.
I just checked my phone, and it's reading 5mA.
And I don't even have SetCPU on my phone. Should I try it out?
I think HTC winmo sense is the culprit. I disable the sense in winmo and get very low Android battery usage during standby. Sometimes around 3mA.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I also suggest to disable sense and put wmo in offline status.

why should turning off sense be good when it comes to battery usage under android? this would mean winmo and sense are running in the background of android...which is not the fact!

You had to try this 2 times before it worked yet you claim this is the final solution for battery drain problems?
i agree with you guys but let me just throw this observation into the mix here. i've read somrthing here in these forums regarding the sd card that came with the phone had something wrong with it ( don't really remember the exact issue ) and if you swapped it out for another sd card, there would be less SODs and a better battery as well.
i've tested this as i have a 4gb sd card and have had no problems whatsoever. everything runs smooth as silk. and, once again, the battery life is great.
NOTE: i do use the keypads lights on trick as well.

Most of us don't need to do keypad gymnastics to get those same results.
Just use the exceller boot loader and set it for 3 or 6 seconds. Having stuff turned off till you need it is a great way to preserve the battery.

Not working for me
Sorry thats all not working for me
i'm still having about 60 mA with VBNROM reloaded - 2.15.50.14/ Bangster 1.5 / Scandisk class 2 - 8 GB
I realley tryed everything and have read a lot of posts. I'm really distressed at the moment.
The best battery cosumption i ever experienced was with mccm 2.5 But that one was not stable for me.

1. Are you using SetCPU with a 245 max screen off profile? 2. Are you disabling WiFi, data and GPS when not using it? 3. Are you using a auto task killer with only SetCPU and Current Widget in ignore list? Also, I don't have 3g in my area but if you do I guess it could account for increased battery drain. If you're in an area that is in/out of coverage, this will cause higher battery drain as well. I get spotty coverage where I work and the battery drain is terrible.
Try mdeejay sense rEVOlution 2.0 androind build with your vbn wom rom - works great !
Try this:
1. switch phone radio off in winmo
2. power off and charge until green light comes on
3. boot winwmo on vbn, then immediately click on EBL
4. boot into mdeejay sense rEVO 2.0
5. turn sense off and use LauncherPro
I get *very good* battery life now with avg 5-7mA draw as evidenced by currentwidget.

no need for keypad gymnastics or other weird and wonderful combinations - before booting into Android, just use KeypadLedControl to force the keypad lights to stay on, then fire up Android using your loader of choice (I use Android Loader, modified to automatically call KeypadLedControl to turn on keypad lights, instead of just letting it run on WinMo startup).
Been rebooting 5-6 times now with consistent low 5-10ma standby current.

The Solution....kind of ;-)
Thx for u'r replys.
I considered all u'r tips and sry dudes it didn't work for me I think the problem was related to the Bangster Build, even though i have been lonesome with my issues.
I changed the LED lib, and tryed to let the LEDs on while booting, set CPU is in condervativ mode/screen off 245min/245max 100% interactiv. And yep, GPS and Wifi where off. I even searched for any SD-Card related Problems in regestry. But Chucky did some great work i think. (i switched again concernig to faster boot)
At some time i think each Leo is different to the other. I changed to Hyperdroid 1.7 with 2.14 Radio and the results are definitely mind blasting.
12 hours on the road, did some surfing, some calls, 2 h musik.
Strange though i used the same kernel and same Radio. Something must have gone wrong by flashing Bangster or something.

[Q] So what is currently the most stable setup for android on HD2?

So about 1-2 months ago, I switched to Android on my HD2, but this wasn't a very good rom. Whenever I turned the screen off, it would only light up black (wtf). It stated the battery was empty all the time. And when I had to restart my phone, and tried booting into android again, it would either freeze on the bootscreen, or it would be the darkest screen ever. Sometimes both.
So I ask; What is the most stable setup to date, for HD2?
I would also like to know which is the most stable Android build to-date (i am not bothered with the HTC Sense layar).
I agree ^^
Right now I'm using mdeejays evo sense 2.3 revolution and upgraded the kernel with Hastarin R8 and it is very stable!!
Its gonna depend on many factors such as what WM rom you're running and what radio as well. I would recommend you get chuckdroid WM rom, a good recent radio, and either evo sense 2.3 or Bangsters 1.5 (if you dont want sense) Ive had good results with both.
Latest Energy WinMo ROM, 2.12 radio, the Android build linked below.
Works fantastic, all day, every day. CM6 mod. MDPI/HDPI hybrid too

I like my setup (in my sig). There's a new skinnyEVO v1.5, and since I haven't tried it, I can't speak of its stability.
The issue you'll encounter in most Android builds is data dropping, which is caused by using PPP (not RMNET) connection. This can be 'fixed' by turning on/off airplane mode.
+1 for Mdeejay builds
just loaded Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 1.1 Matted this morning, so far v smooth, battery 5mA in standby, camera with flash working, no probs so far.
deff' the best of the 3 android builds ive tried
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797357
For the one who said that it depends on many factors, here is my current specifications;
OS-Version
5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.82)
Manila-Version
2.5.19211619.0
ROM-Version
1.66.409.1 (76641) NOR
ROM-Date
01/12/10
Radioversion
2.12.50.02_2
Protokollversion:
15.40.50.07U
What kind of setup would be best for my specs?

I'm on O2 in the UK. Using the latest Sense version of the PhireMOD Skinny EVO (v1.5) with 2.15 radio and the latest Chucky ROM 23139 ~ 3.14. Rock solid stability and very smooth and fast. I get an occasional data drop but that's the same with every PPP build. Battery life with light usage is approx 2 days.
Just upgraded to V8 kernal and it's smoother than ever. Best andriod build i've used - apart from the data drops (which is not the fault of the build) it's pretty much perfect for me. The key is to get the right combination of radio/wmrom/andriod. Unfortunately it seems to be different for different people so just a case of trial and error until you find the right combo. In my case the switch to 2.15 radio solved a lot of issues.
energy and skinnyEVO v1.5 with latest kernell update is the best setup you can get.... after a long search i foud this one to be the best..... oh radio 2.12.50.xxxx great battery life..... >
energy rom and mdeej's Revolution is by far the best sense build to date and there is a new radio for those of you that dont know yet 2.15
There is no guaranteed catch all perfect setup. what may run perfectly fine for me may run absolutely horrible for you. Different strokes for different folks.
Factors you have to consider:
SD Card (class, size, whether is SDHC or not, how it is formatted, cluster size)
Battery calibration (does your battery last a long time in WinMo?)
Your own knowledge (if you cannot be bothered to search for any simple problems then you WILL get frustrated trying to run Android)
the best way you can find out the best setup for you is trial and error.

Sorry for the noob question, but can somebody describe data dropping to me?
I got a HD2 from work on the weekend, so the first thing I did was install android
I installed: Radio_2_14_50_04, and FroyoStone_Sense_V3.2. This combo is working fine and seems stable.
The problem I had yesterday was that I could not access the internet although I had a strong 3g or H signal. The problem would suddenly disappear and access would be fine for a few minutes and then no access again. Access seems more consistant today.
Battery life seems a problem too, it was fully charged at 7am this morning and was down to 5% by 5pm, that was with mild usage apart from about an hour mp3 and 30 min gps.
Any of this sound normal for android on a HD2?

So I ask; What is the most stable setup to date, for HD2?

is the one you really like, the one that appeals to your needs and whims the most
so try them builds around and share your ideas and experience with each of them

Sorry for the noob question, but can somebody describe data dropping to me?
I got a HD2 from work on the weekend, so the first thing I did was install android
I installed: Radio_2_14_50_04, and FroyoStone_Sense_V3.2. This combo is working fine and seems stable.
The problem I had yesterday was that I could not access the internet although I had a strong 3g or H signal. The problem would suddenly disappear and access would be fine for a few minutes and then no access again. Access seems more consistant today.

there is a VERY BIG discussion on a lot of threads about data drops, search for them. that is one nagging PITA at the moment for Android. switching airplane
mode on and off always worked for me though, also need to have the correct
APN setting for your network

Battery life seems a problem too, it was fully charged at 7am this morning and was down to 5% by 5pm, that was with mild usage apart from about an hour mp3 and 30 min gps.
Any of this sound normal for android on a HD2?

reboot Android at least three times and the battery usage will improve drastically
my juice lasts a full day of moderate to heavy usage.

Thanks for the info...the airplane mode trick worked a treat
When you say reboot android 3 times, do you mean reset the whole device, or is there a way to shut down and restart the android os?
Cheers
Tony
I use:
VBN reloaded 2 minimal ROM
mdeejay revolution 2.0
radio 2.12.50.
One time deals:
i) turn off auto backlight in winmo
ii) do a g-sensor calib in winmo
Make sure you :
i) Load android using EBL *as soon as you possibly can*
ii) press the back button when its loading HaRET
and you are all set !!!

[Q]Slow wake up

So, when i lock my phone, and when i try to wake up to unlock, it is really really slow sometimes (up to 10-15 seconds even)..
Is there any way to prevent this ( to decrease that wake up time ) ?
p.s. My phone wm and android roms, radio and kernel is shown in my signature
Cheers ppl and thanks in advance,
Laynee
The 'smartass' scaling defaults to 245mhz when the screens off.... Disable the smartass, then bump the frequency up when the screens off !
Ok, first of all thanks for swift and fast response..
Second, from your reply, it seems like i have to install setCpu, and do that in it? What freq to put when screen is off? Because last time i got those profiles set up in setCpu ( before i uninstalled it), they didnt work..
And last, will it affect my battery drainage alot ?
p.s. One more question ( i know im annoying ) : I got really slow download speed when downloading from Market.. any cure ?
Huh, nor smartass nor underclocking in standby is respondible for slow wake up (well, maybe for a split second but definitely not the 10-15 seconds OP is talking about).
I haven't found any solution for this yet, but actually once you learn to only lock your phone when you know you won't be needing it the next 30 seconds, your problems are gone. (Unless you're using an old build/kernel, in that case you should just upgrade. New builds only lockup if you unlock shortly after locking.)
Slow market downloads is due to your sd card apparently. Either try with another one, or unmount SD card before starting the download.
i always find using the 'pick up' key wakes the phone in less then 3 secs everytime for me
I'm my experience wake lag is caused by corruption of the SD card. It happens more often when I try to use higher class cards than the stock one. What always fixes it for me is running checkdisk in windows. It usually finds errors and after it fixes them and I reboot I get no wake lag for a while. Errors happen a lot less often for me when I stick to stock sandisk class 2 card. Hope this works for you.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I found this recently on Desire HD, it takes 3-5 seconds to wake up (not using setcpu)
I am using cedesmith desire hd2 (beta) rom with 2.14.50_2 radio and energy (13-nov) winmo.
Most desire builds are ok (less than 1 sec )
Hope to fix this ASAP

The most you can do is try another microSD card, but the reality is that this is device-dependent. You've just been unlucky to get an HD2 that is slow to wake up.
I know this because I had an HD2 before which took around 5-10 seconds to wake up all the time. After I broke it, my insurance company replaced it.
My new HD2 wakes up instantly almost always.
Well i forgot to mention one thing :
The slow wake up problem is not happening every time i try to unlock phone(its not that much often but when it happends im pissed off).
When it happends, buttons and screen are up, but screen is blank for 7-10 ( not 15 seconds i overreacted )..
So any help now ?

hmmm my screen is only ever delayed by around 3 or 4 seconds e.g. when in the middle of installing software.
Only thing that might help is, as before, trying another microSD card or a different ROM/kernel.
The one I'm on is Mdeejay Clean Sense with hastarin 8.5.1. Try that and see if it's any better. If not, its either your microSD card or just your phone.
