[Q] SoD Confirmed Workaround+Question - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Guide:
If you get SoDs as often as I do, you might be getting mad. in fact, you might even go back to WinMo! But, try this tip out.
[0] Disable automatic phone lock / screen time out. (I'm not sure if Aldiko does this)
[1] Download the Aldiko app from the Android marketplace (before you ask, yes, the eBook reader one.)
[2] Start the app and click one of the included books.
[3] Slide your finger from the top left corner of your screen to the bottom left corner of your screen. This is your new "locked" screen.
[4] To unlock your screen, hit the home button and go to your home screen, or phone button and go straight to your phone.
[5] Next time you want to lock your screen, just start the Aldiko app, it should already be a blank screen but if not just slide your finger down again.
Question: Is there any way to make the power/hang up hardware button on your phone start Aldiko?

While I appreciate your creative work around, I've not experienced a hard freeze or touch screen freeze in almost a month.
If your juggling android builds, this can cause corruption in some cases, and can result in said-per SOD.
If your working with an older build, the g-sensor can cause a freeze, but its not quite a hard freeze unless you fiddle with it to the point of it not recovering.
If your using Set CPU and its clocked on the lowest settings, this can cause hard freezes via it being clocked too low to wake up.
These are the main reasons that I've found for my own SOD. My suggestion? Use a WM Rom built specifically for android. Use a RECENT build that specifies that most everything is working. There are some new chefs out there working on builds that aren't quite as polished as some of the more experienced chefs.
Good luck, and may you never experience an SOD again!

The thing about the Windows ROM is bringing up this question. What is the best WM ROM to use? I'm using Miri's V17 but it sucks so much it can't even get the flipping time right... I really hate it, what should I change to?

I'm using ChuckyDroidRom, and its working out pretty well for me. But I cant say its the BEST.

I'll give it a try. Anything is better than a POS that can't even get time right... should probably try Elegancia too, hearing good things about that.

Im using an old energy rom from back in june i believe and i will get a random screen freeze. Maybe one every 3 days. thats it. and my radio is still on 2.10 and i can get through a day of normal use with just one battery. Someone had referred to that aldiko app but thats too much trouble. If your getting that many SOD's then reformat your memory card, add a fresh android build. And try not messing with setcpu. Im using the froyo build by tytung and its running great.

+1 for not having anymore freezes. I have not had 1 freeze in the last 7 days using latest darkstone froyo build. Im also using a old full energy rom from july. Also a class 6 8gb memory card.

I think with all this work that has been done on these kernals and builds have REALLY reduced the SOD's.

TouchFLO 3D home screen freezes

Sometimes I just hate my phone. I have an AT&T HTC Pure. I haven't done any modifications to the ROM or anything, just installing a few apps. Today my phone turned itself off due to low battery, so I put it on the charger for a couple hours. When I needed it again I turned it on and the HTC TouchFLO 3D loaded, showing my background and the big ugly clock along with my appointments. I noticed after a few minutes the time was off by... a few minutes. The screen had completely frozen. I couldn't use the slider at all. There goes my People, Music, Calendar, Weather, and Programs tabs I use all the time. I soft reset and it comes back, looking normal. I go to use the slider and it freezes in mid-motion... never to move again. I press the Start button and my Start menu comes up. I close the Start menu and I can still see it, although it doesn't respond and the X is gone from the upper right-hand corner. I tap the Notifications bar and my notifications show up. I click close and it's still up, just not responding to taps (frozen is my guess). I've reset it a multitude of ways now all with the same result... even taking out the battery.
I don't get this. It was working fine just a short while ago. I've reset the thing before and not had this problem. I haven't installed any apps since the last time I had to turn it off due to low battery, and it came up fine from that. What could be causing this?
The real thing is this has happened before. It's like if it ever has to reload the TouchFLO interface it just bombs 1 out of 20 times. Hell I was playing around with Android for the thing, which resets the phone when you want to go back into Windows, and not had this problem the whole time I was testing it. If my phone shuts down, roll the dice and I might get lucky enough for it to come back without this problem.
I resolved it before by doing a hard reset. Lost all my stuff. That sucks for what seems no good reason at all. It's not like I was modifying system files or screwing with registry settings. It isn't even a custom ROM.
Any insight on what could be causing this, and how to get it back to normal?
I'm regretting not buying an Android phone every day anyway, but thanks to 2yr service agreements and lack of sufficient disposable income to dump AT&T I'm stuck with this thing for a while.
Thanks in advance for any help and understanding!
Your issue is that you are on the stock ROM.
That's why XDA exists, because stock ROMs are full of bloatware, eating up memory, and lacking any performance tweaks.
Cooked ROMs are not a cause of issues but a solution.
I hated my phone out of the box, but now it rocks...
With that, if you are going to stay stock, I suggest you get a backup program and hard reset.
At this point I'm very interested in custom ROMs, yet I know little about them. Looks like its time to get on it and read up what I can.

Start with the Hard SPL thread. A link is located in the 2nd sticky.
This is the precursor to flashing a custom ROM.
Once successful, you can cruise the ROM forum for the ROM of your liking.
It's things like this that make me so glad I found this site
You can try installing "CleanRAM" and running it after every initial boot to clear excess memory. You can also configure CleanRAM to schedule your memory cleaning. I recommend you to use "Level 2" cleaning though.

Unfortunately CleanRAM does absolutely nothing. When TouchFLO 3D re-loads it lasts almost literally 2 seconds before freezing at whatever I'm doing. I've even used the customized process cleaner to stop as many processes as I could (or just manila.exe) and it still will freeze when the interface comes up.
I've been able to get it to the standard Windows Default look and it works now, so that will enable me to back up what I'm going to. If I'm going to have to do a hard reset anyway, might as well put something better on there.
Maybe this might help
i experianced the same problem and the cause was i sync my entire e-mail acc. on the pure and it ran ok untill i restarted it and it boom hanged.
So i cleaned up the entire messaging folder under \Windows\
At restarted it and it was fine
So i suggest dont sync up entire e-mail in any form i.e headers only etc.
If this helps do P.M me
I installed a custom rom from dutty, and now it completely dies while in standby, have to remove the battery to boot it up again. Looks like I traded one critical problem for another.

Did you hard reset after flashing?
Also, which version of Dutty's did you install?

**IMPORTANT** Please Test. G-Sensor = Cause of 'Random' freezes + Bad Screen response

I Think I May have found the cause of the otherwise apparently 'random' freezes/hangs and total lack of touch sensitivity.
Basically, In my case at least, It Is the G-sensor/accelerometer.
I have been noticing increasing numbers of these freezes on Mattc 1.5 Froyo, Mainly in Landscape, Mainly in games.
TEST:
I installed 'Iron Sight' Game. (If theory is right then you should be able to use any landscape game, but please try Iron sight if possible.)
I Ran the game and it switched to landscape,
SO I PHYSICALLY TURNED MY HD2 TO LANDSCAPE.
THIS IS WHERE THE FREEZING AND LAGGING BEGAN!
On the Main menu found it difficult to press any options.
When I did manage to start a Game The control buttons were hard to press and the game was unplayable because screen sensitivity was just not there most of the game.
I Then Physically turned the HD2 around and Back to Portrait orientation, AND ALTHOUGH THE SCREEN ORIENTATION STAYED IN LANDSCAPE I DID NOT EXPERIENCE ONE SINGLE LAG OR FREEZE.
BUTTON PRESSES WERE RESPONSIVE TO TOUCH AT ALL TIMES FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES!
HERES WHERE IT GETS MORE INTERESTING....
I Then Turned the HD2 back around to landscape again and the Problems IMMEDIATELY RETURNED.
I THEN HELD THE PHONE VERY STILL IN LANDSCAPE AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE PROBLEMS/LAG/FREEZES DISSAPEARED AGAIN!!!
TESTED REPEATEDLY!
IN LANDSCAPE AS SOON AS THERE IS ANY PHYSICAL MOVEMENT, THE GAME FREEZES, BUT IF I KEEP IT STILL THE GAME RESPONDS PERFECTLY WITHOUT HESITATION.
Can some of you please test this theory?
A cradle/Dock would be handy for testing but it is possible to keep the phone still enough in-hand in my tests.
Use the game "Iron Sight" where possible, but use other games/apps too if you have time or inclination
Post the results below ( with logs where possible ?) Please.
Note:
After discovering the above, I did a search on XDA and found that a member called 'Hinky' and touched on this but I think I have narrowed it down.... I think
Please test and confirm (or debunk lol).
Thanks.

Yes this is something that the devs have been discussing. It does seem that the freeze issue is in fact related to the g sensor. I don't know if anyone is working on it at this time but I believe Cotulla will try to sort it out for his September release

Lol keep with the testing though I didn't figure that much out
Hmmm this is def the prob for my touch screen issues. I tested a bit using the latest mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense 1.5 version, with latest FULLRAM. I found that while on the sense home screen if I hold the phone out in front of me either landscape and portrait it's ok, and I can do whatever I want at full speed no lag at all. THEN if I lay the phone flat, It freezes. I did this like 20+ times and every time It would freeze whether I was playing a game or reading an email.
This also happen to me. Using Mattc 1.5 Froyo, it happens when using internet browser. The screen will freeze or not response right after i turn from Portrait to Landscape or sometimes have to wait for few seconds. I have to turn my device from Landscape to Portrait, and back to Landscape again, then the screen responses back to normal. This also happens in Copilot app when using in Landscape mode.
I turned off the screen rotation
What I did since i installed my ROM with 380mb ram is to turn off all screen rotation settings, so far so good, I haven't notice any freeze or lag so far in any application or while waking the device up, I used to have it and I hate it, I almost went back to Winmo!!.

Did you fresh install 1.5 or upgrade 1.4>1.5?
I had quite a few freezes on 1.4.
Then I upgraded to 1.5 and kept my apps etc from 1.4.
I HARDLY HAD ANY FREEZES AT ALL
Then I did a fresh install of 1.5 and started getting LOTS of freezes.
i did a fresh install.
i deleted all android files on my sd card and extracted the new build to a new made "Android" folder...
i use xanny roms, and i still have the robovoice problem, so i can´t use android daily...
i noticed on all android builds ive tried sofar, that the polling interval of the gsensor is very bad/small. U can see it when u go to calibrate the gsensor, the bubbles move very slowly...
this is not a big thing when u only use the gsenor to turn screen to LS, but it is essential to play games using the sensor...

Lol, no worries I'm glad that you pointed it out. This was actually one of those really useful threads and the kind of thing that the developers are looking for. I am not a dev but I speak with them pretty regularly when the same issue are pointed out time and time again by those who do not read the threads. This was something that has not been talk about here so I appreciate your well thought post and the information that you provided
I was just a step before creating a new thread about it when I saw this one.
This is definitely one of the things that are really pissing me off using Android.
Furthermore, I did tests on this issue for quite long to doubt that it's an autorotation related issue. Maybe it has something to do with the g-sensor, but it still would happen randomly even trying not to move the phone at all. I noticed that the problem wouldnt appear that often when decreasing the polling interval of set cpu and same time increasing the min. freq. to 380, but still, it DOES happen.
I'd really appreciate any statement on this, developer side of course.
I have the occasional screen freeze on landscape, but not very often using froyostone.

Cheers for that ^
+1 for the Gsensor polling intervals seeming very slow.
THIS CAN BE SEEN VERY CLEARLY USING THE 'VR TUNNEL' LIVE WALLPAPER.
Here the cubes move smoothly at a good fps while the tunnel moves around at what appears to be 4/5 fps.

Possibly not related to autorotation per-se, but...
With Autorotation disabled... If I turn my phone on its side (with volume buttons pointing towards floor) I still experience freezes on my home screen or anywhere else for that matter.
Plus I have found that holding the phone VERY still in any position seems to eliminate 'ALL' freezing and lagging problems.
Do the G-sensor and the Dgital compass 'interlink' or communicate in any way? Is it possible that the screwed up compass output is screwing with the g-sensor output?
I ask this because the game 'hungry shark' thought that my phone was flat whent the usb port was pointed down towards the floor.
Dont know if that makes sense but for me it seems like the g-sensor is fubar as well as the digital compass.

Well ofc, it wouldn't freeze when it's COMPLETELY hold still, but I guess that shouldn't be the point of daily usage.
Now when it comes to spontaneous outside actions, you are trying to pick up a call using touchscreen cuz ur used to it or trying to shoot out a text in hurry, and your device will just go sleep for some time. I mean, how'd you hold still if you're moving (fast)?
If you ask me thats pretty much a major bug, not to forget the 3g data thing. I'm not moaning around, just want to attain more focus on this. I notice people losing themselves in some benchmark trolling - just time waste.
There is already a thread for that (walking dead)
Just found a possible solution, please repport if it is better for you too :
- boot windows mobile, calibrate the g-sensor in settings (i did it 2 or 3 times, but i don't think its important)
- do a proper shutdown of wm
- restart wm + android
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
After disabling "Auto-rotate screen" I haven't had a freeze yet, so good so far.

[Q] Please Help..I am at my wits end..

I have an HD2(of course)...i have tried many many roms but am stuck with the same issue..I have random freezing issues..i have tried different radios, different classes of sd cards..tried adjusting the vm heap. but to no avail..i am currently using frankenstine rom it seems to be the smoothest but i still have freezing issues..when this occurs i can only pull the battery to reset it and sometimes when i do this i must pull battery 3-5 times to get it past the magloader screen.
i have asked this question in many of the rom threads that i have used but have never gotten a clear and definite fix..can someone enlighten me on how to cure this issue it is really becoming quite frustrating.. thanks in advance to anyone..
When do you have these freezing issues?
When you're watching a web video? Playing a game and listening to music at the same time?
If so, it's cuz you've run out of ram, so your phone will lagg to death. So get a task manager to close those apps.
If not Iunno what your problem is.
Note: Try not to pull out your battery, instead use the soft reset button. If you keep pulling out your battery, you'll mess up the pins.

yes the last time i flashed i used task29..someone once told me it was my radio..which ive tried to downgrade to an earlier version but that didnt help either..
I think it's ram. Reason being, if it is from opening an app, it may be the app is using too much memory for it to handle, eg. mega jump is one
Never tried words before though, but it doesn't sound like something that uses a lot of memory but Iunno.
Do you use desire hd or z builds? Those leave very little ram left.

ok i rewiped, reflashed, task29'd it last night and thought everything was a-ok until a few minutes ago when yet again it froze. i cant wait till tmobile comes out with an htc phone with the same screen size as the hd2 but native android cuz ill be all over it..this crap gets old quick..i cant believe i am the only one with this unfixable issue.
did you also fully refresh you sd card? not much point task29'ing, reinstalling android and starting over if your sd card is still full of cache/droid system folders/EXT/Dalvik and what not.
that being said, if you have had the phone since way back last year, a good proportion of the early ones had freezing problems, regardless of rom.radio, and a quick warranty swap was usually the answer.

your other comment kinda makes sense..i have had this since i think February of last year.
so after speaking with tmobile, and actually reflashing windows 6.5 and having it freeze on me twice and today it got stuck in a reboot loop, I am getting a new HD2..i sure hope this one does not freeze as much as my current model..if tmobile would come out with an android phone with this big of a screen i would switch.

[Q] lags, high cpu and assorted sluggishness

I am using CMYLXGO's NAND stock Desire HD build. Its great. However, I am having so many lag issues. I seem to be one of the few that is experiencing this with the build so i turn to some of you to see if you have had similar issues with your phones.
Problems:
1. when auto populating apps (like using installer, uninstaller, managing applications in the system tab) the phone will take forever to pull up all the apps , the screen will cut off (because the screen times out) and when I hit the home button or any button to cut the phone back on it stays black.
2. every action makes the cpu run high. adding a widget to the home screen (apps populating issue again), changing screens really fast and other assorted minor processed.
I have stopped auto sync
I do not use auto rotate any more
I do not have any rogue processes for the most part
I don't understand why I seem to have these lag issues. Everyone else talks about how fast and fluid the build is. I am under the impression that with the build NOT being run from the memory card NAND would add to speed. This is not happening for me. If anyone has any idea why this is happening. I am convinced it is something on my end but I don't know where to start. I am open to suggestions.
I have 2.15 radio, 16 gig class 2 memory card.
Hmmm, not sure but have you tried another ROM similar to see if it does the same? You can also go into MAGLDR and wipe dalvik cache. I used this ROM and all was good for me. I have sense been using this one which is also working very well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976384&page=1
every version of this build has been tried. That is the part that gets me. differnt kernels don't help either. i have even used SetCPU and overcloced to try and get through some of the lag. it works, but it is only when I play games not when I need to perform uninstall or widget selection for the home pages. I use SeePU which is ususally shows my cpu strain in the bright orange (for high use). most of my processes/actions raise the cpu use to high levels. I never really operate in a green (or low) usage level no matter what the action is. I would really like to capitalize on the speed NAND is supposed to offer.
Personally I would try something else (a totally different ROM) and see if you are still getting the same results, maybe even revert back to a windows mobile rom just to see if you are still getting the hang up. Last option would be to restore your phone to stock and start over, reinstall HSPL 2.08 new radio, etc...etc...

I personally think this is one of the most stable builds around. I would rarely experience any lag, and if I did it would only last for seconds.

Believe me, I know. Everything is working in his build. GPS, MMS, easy to install - the works. This is why i really want this to work properly so I can use it, without the hiccups, as my daily build. It has to be something with my phone but I can't figure out what it is yet....
On Cmylxgo's build, the first time I loaded it, I had the laggy and unresponsiveness you described for the same reasons. What I found is that rebooting the system to off/on a couple of times when I first loaded the build, addressed the first initial lag and unresponsiveness. After doing a couple of reboots, I found the build as smooth as everyone says it is. I am now trying the GL Core v11 kernel and it gives an extra 300 pts to the Quadrant Score and seems to be a bit quicker than the Rafpigna 1.8 kernel that comes with the build. Also, standby battery drain seems to be a bit better with the hourly peaks at half what I see with Rafpigna. If rebooting a couple of times doesn't do it for you, I know trying another build which may not have all the bells and whistles as Cmylxgo, but it is worth a try to see if it makes a difference. For me at least Cmylxgo's stock Desire (HD)2 build is much faster and smoother than any of the MDJ SD builds I was using.

Why does my DZ fail me when I need it the most

Now I love my DZ; it is by far the most capable phone I've ever owned, but it has this nasty habit of failing me whenever I seem to need it the most.
For example, today I was stuck behind a huge accident on the highway with an exit coming up in a few feet. I thought, "hey I'll just see if I can find a detour around it from this exit." Pulled out my phone and quickly launched google maps. right then, it completely stops responding to all touch input; the trackpad and physical buttons work fine, but nothing was registering on the touchscreen or capacitive buttons. I eventually had to pull the battery to fix the issue.
It just seems that these things tend to happen whenever i need to lookup something quickly on the phone (when im just screwing around on it, it works perfectly fine) be it completely not responding to touch input, or something weird happening like getting stuck between 2 homescreens, or the notification panel gets stuck halfway down, or massive input lag (5+ seconds) to the point of it not being usable.
And everything goes back to normal after a reset; but by then, I usually don't need to lookup whatever it was anymore.
The most frustrating part is that I can't seem to figure out whats causing it. I'm running virtuous 2.0.0 without any sense 3 additions, and I generally only have 1 or 2 tasks going on on the phone at once (usually just music player + whatever I'm doing). I originally thought it was just a performance issue, so I've increased the clock up to 1.5ghz (using daemon controller) but it hasn't has of an effect.
Any ideas on what else i can try?
Sounds like simple bad karma, I suggest donating to a charity or going to church
Other than that, I'd have no idea, sorry. Seeing as its not totally regular, there'd be no good way to easily pinpoint the issue. Maybe see if the rom produces a last_kmsg?

although people say roms are 'stable' and can recommend these ROMs as "dd" (daily drivers) you cannot say that will be completely reliable. This is because when people say a ROM is 'stable', it's only after using it for 2-3days; unfortunately, roms gather clutter and begin to slow down over time. Not a problem for many flashaholics, but a problem if you're a one-rom kinda guy (or girl). So if you're not one-night-stand rom kind of person, here are some tips:
Reset your phone regularly. Phones start acting funny when they've been on for too long
Try stock ROM with addons flashed on top of it, rather than baked in a new rom
Most reliable roms i've experienced are Stock Gingerbread or CyanogenMod. Try those
If you are flashing a new rom, use SuperWipe, this can help get rid of clutter from old roms

Hmm, so you believe that this is purely a rom issue?
I havent run a stock rom for a while, but from what i remember the experience wasnt that pleasant, there was significant lag almost everywhere in the ui. Although i will admit that was back with froyo; i havent tried a stock gb stock rom yet.
Ill probablygive cm7 a go. Ive just grown so used to some sense features that its going to be hard for me to give them up (mainly recent apps in notifications, news widget, t9 dailer+manually linking contacts, and remote ring and forward on htcsense.com)
Has anyone had similar issues running virtuous sense 2.0.0?
As far as recent apps goes, long pressing the home button is a standard feature of android that brings up the most recent. Stock is the last 8 (I think) cm7 can show 15.

Higher overclocking will make your phone LESS stable, not more. I'd stick around 1 GHz, as this is known to be very stable on most Z's, and usually does not result in any significant additional battery drain. OC may not have anything to do with your random hangs, but its probably not helping either.

I'd agree. I really wouldn't ever go over 1.2ghz for a daily driver personally.
I run my ROMs at 800mhz lol, so I don't see the advantage of a huge overclock unless you're just bragging about benchmark scores.
its funny when u wanna show off your phone and you take it out of your pocket acting all cool and stuff and when u press the power button it wont wake up or you get a blank screen
haha its just bad karma for u like nipqer said
Try the stock pre-rooted gingerbread...I just flashed t last week and it is way faster than my froyo was, and amazing battery life, for me anyways, I do have an extended life battery though lol. Anyways as far as speed it is snappy on 800 mhz

I've noticed the random hangs / glitches @ 800Mhz and 1Ghz, so I'm hesitant to say that the OC is the cause.
What do you use for stability testing? I've been running quadrant nonstop to test new OCs, but I don't think that benchmark stresses the cpu enough.
i am running Virtuous v2.0.0 w/ kernel unity v6 on it on desire z.
i've found bugs like
1/the top black bar ui, top left corner, some times i see the background wallpaper rather than the black bar. but it goes away if i pull down the notifications.
2/ the mail with microsoft exchange active sync, if i delete the mail it will automatically resync and downloads all mail including the on i deleted. but i got around that by using pop/imac instead.
all rather minor as i got ways to go around it.
i did have a similar issue where the touch screen goes unresponsive and i had to force close it, restart phone to get it back alive. but then i readjusted the clock speed and never had it happened again.
the phone is at around 825mhz with governor smart ass on wake time max, unless im watching 720p movies on the phone then i ramp it up at 1.4ghz.
sleep time on 368mhz max with governor at conservative.
i had it on like this since 11/09/11 (as i made a rom backup) and it never occured yet.

I've been playing with the wake min and wake gov settings the past few days. I have it set at 600Mhz min, performance gov; I haven't noticed much difference in the battery life, but I'll have to do more extensive testing to be sure.
Performance feels slightly better, especially after a fast wake. can anyone give a detailed explanation of the behavior of the different gov settings? I can't seem to find much info on it.
