Hi,
I have recently flashed my HD2 with the following firmware called :
_HTC HD2_RUU_Leo_HKCSL_WWE_1.72.831.1_Radio_CRC_Signed_15.32.50.07U_2.07.51.22_2_Ship(2)
I got this from the HTC Website, after reflash all was good
After the reflash I used a program called "HTC Backup" to backup all my contacts etc from a file i created. After that backup was done, my HTC had only half the Icons on it, example when I go into Start > Tools .... there is NOTHING.
I have tried to Hard Reset, by holding Vol down, vol up and power button, the multicoloured screen comes up but does not prompt me to hard reset, so only thing I can do then is take battery out and put it back in, resets back to how it is... limited functionality with nothing under Tools.
Any help? My HD2 is pretty much useless now. i try to reflash again wtih it but I get error 260 cannot connect.
Thanks.
Bit of an update, Well I managed to get it to connect and reflash, but now I don't know how to get my data back.
I was highly recommended the program "HTC Backup" which is supposedly made by HTC, but the backup simply renders my HTC Useless, no Tools, No Settings.
When restoring, about 30 seconds while it's restoring, it just turns into the desktop, the program dissapears and goes to desktop, then you have nothing under "tools"
It's done it twice in a row.
Anyway of accessing the files stored in the "backup" file this program makes?
The program when restoring, about 10 seconds in just switches to the desktop, the desktop is now bank, no clock and nothing. when going into menu, there is no "Tools" and the menu is half empty half of the icons.
I'm wondering does anybody know how to access or decompile these backup files that the program "HTC Backup" creates?
Thanks.
has it restored your contacts?
see, what has probably happened is the backup prog has backed up all kinds of registry settings, and you have moved to a new rom, and those settings are no longer valid, and are screwing with the new rom. (you shouldnt copy tweaks and reg settings across from one rom to a new rom. its OK for hard resetting to the same rom, not a new one).
So, if your contacts are restored, and you can get enough functionality to do it, try to sync them off the phone now whilst its useless, (activesync to outlook, microsoft myphone, gmail or something, theres probably loads of ways,) and then do a hard reset, and after the new rom is in place sync the contacts back, meaning you arent running the restore program.

Hi all,
got a QTEK S110, which is great. Recently done a backup, but when I then tried after a hard reset to restore, it could not, as it said it was for a different device!?!?!
Now I know this is not the case, so does anyone have any ideas what I can do.
I have also done a bit of messing about, and done different backups of my newly reset pda. This time it allows me to restore, but then stops and says some files could not be copied, because they could be in use, and to make sure all programs are shut. The only one open is Activesync, which I then shut And it says that it is all finished, but all my contacts along with other stuff has not been restored.
Activesync seems to be a bit lame. Is there another program I can use to restore the activesync backups?
Nick B
Hi Nick !
Had the same problem restoring with activesync. The backup i made was with country setting to "German - Austria" but the default after hard resetting the qtek is different so activesync quits restoring.
Solution:
After resetting your qtek set the country setting (Start/Settings/System/Country Settings) to the country you had set while you made the backup. The try the restore with activesync.
Good Luck,
Gerhard
Contacts & Calendar are somewhat problematic with backups. Next time use Sprite or another third-party product for backup/restore.
Now to solve the open programs try to boot in safemode. There are several programs to achieve this. I believe sbp pocket plus is one of them. Also you can try to empty the windows\startup folder. Just move the shortcuts somewhere else, especially poutlook.lnk is a suspicious one. I must say I never tried this myself when I had simular probs, at that time I didn't knew to much of the PPC.
Last resort try to synchronize with your desktop, this should give you the contacts & calendar data, which I think is most important at the moment. The other data will come from your AS backup.

Suddenly my Media Player has gone bad on me. Probably deleted some part of it in my efforts to slim down the system. When I launch it from the "Programs" folder I get this error-message:
"The file 'player' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might nedd to reinstall or restore this file."
The icon is also missing. However when I try to open a WMP-file the app starts up just fine, and after that clicking on the icon in the "Programs" folder also works until next (soft)reset. Icon still missing though. Kinda annoying but no big deal. Can it be fixed somehow, or am I facing my first hard reset?
Grateful for help / [email protected] xlnt forum
OK, so I did the hard reset hoping my problem would go away but since I also restored my device with Sprite the WMP-error was also restored (I sort of suspected that...)
It did however work before the restoring part of all this.
Is there any other way of doing this? (Besides another hard reset and the pain of having to manually install/set registrys etc etc...)
Please advise... :?
If you can remember all the files you deleted, you can perform a hard reset so that the files you deleted in the first place are returned. Copy all those files to your SD Card then use your excisting Sprite Backup to restore back to whatever configuration you programmed and add one by one the files you deleted (now placed on your Sd card) and test Windows Media Player. This proceedure is very tidious as you have to try one file at a time and remembering which folder you copied them from, restoring and deleting them again if that was not the file needed.
So personally, I would just perform a hard reset and do it all over again. But this is just me.
Another suggestion to avoid this happening in the future, if you do opt for the hard reset and starting from scratch, make a backup BEFORE each time you add or delete a file. Just in case you want to go back to your last configuration. This is the procedure I use to do with my Palm OS device each time I want to try an application. I made sure I have a backup of my system with a clean install, meaning I did not change anything on the system, just a plain backup after I plugged-in all my codes and installed all my applications. I then perform another backup after each change I do and observe my system if nothing conflicts. So in anyway, using this procedure, I know I always have a backup of a clean install. Something I miss from Palm.
You´re probably right, makes sense to have a nice, clean backup to go back to. Guess that's what I'll do. Just need to work up the energy for it...
Thanks Christian!
Start Menu just lists "Today" and "coldinit" - system behaving strangely
I've been using NTS Jaguar for maybe half a year with no problems.
3.08
3.08
02 25 11
10.1.0.811
Then a few days ago the phone started behaving strangely, I would go to turn it on and it would do nothing but a black screen, with the LED blinking green. I'd pull out the battery to restart it. Once I saw the bootloader. Now the Start Menu lists nothing but "Today" and "coldinit" with an application icon. I can open Contacts and Calendar, but Messaging is completely missing from the Today screen, and if I try to send a text message from Contacts, nothing happens. If I press the wireless button, camera button, messaging button, or IE button, it says something about not being able to run or find the shortcut. The contacts and calendar buttons work, though. The latest restart it said "No Service" and then went black. Is it dying? Is there a fix? Is there a way to run programs without the Start menu?
Now it shows "coldinit" and "enrollnot". Is there a way to make a backup/dump of the filesystem so I can reflash it?
"Cannot execute \Windows\StartUp\OmapClock.lnk"
X-Button allows me to view memory, which allows me to find files, and it seems like most things are still there, so I don't get it.
Is there any way to run commands without using the Start menu?
Now it's saying "Storage memory critically low". Is that all the problem is? I got it to sync with Google Calendar but it loaded too many things and filled up memory? The Start menu has calupd, enrollnot, and coldinit as the only possible options.
I can access the files through the USB link, but there are parts I can't copy, like "Databases". I'd really like to backup all my contact information, calendar information, text messages, etc. before I re-flash it. How do I do this?
Also I can't install any programs. The installer just quits.
I just realized that this happened after installing Funambol and configuring it to update with the scheduleworld.com servers.
I can't even reflash it??? It gives me an error:
ERROR [214] : FILE WRITE
The Update Utility can not write the requested file. Please check your Update Utility.

I hard reset it and am now able to copy my backed up files onto it. Then I hope to back them up normally and then reflash with a newer ROM.

You should consider using a backup utility (eg. Sprite Backup) to perform a full backup of the device once you're done setting it up. that way, you have a stable base image to restore from should something like this happen again in the future.
Also, it might be a good idea to sync with Outlook or other local synchronization tools to synchronize your database & PIM information to your PC as an error on the hosted website services could render your online data obsolete & inaccessible.

Yes, that's definitely something that should be recommended to all new users. Since I have a SD card in at all times, a program that regularly backs up all my data in the background to the SD card would be best. If I had known about this a few months ago when I started using this phone, I would have been able to hard reset and restore from the backup right when I ran into problems.

I don't use Windows, so I can't sync with Outlook. I wanted to use ScheduleWorld / Funambol to back up my data and then synchronize calendar with Google Calendar and figure out how to synchronize with Thunderbird/Lightning on my computer, but Funambol apparently is responsible for my phone dying.
I have been running d-two's rom for a while now and it is working great for me. Last night I tried to connect to live messenger and it went a bit crazy. Now it will only get to the today screen and then it hangs. I am looking around the site for a solution but I just wanted to ask here as well..
I know a hard reset will get me going again, problem is some text messages from last night that I really really dont want to lose.
I think it may be relatedto xpuscaler, but I dont really know. Activesync will not connect
The ideas I think may help me are:
1. can i use something like tty to get into the machine and either take the sms and contacts file or remove xpuscaler from the startup?
2. Can i use the clean registry without the format storage option from the hard reset menu? would this destroy my contacts and sms?
Please help
sim cards can store messages and as far as i know windows mobile (2k2 & 2k3) saves contacts to the sim card. check it in another phone if the stuff is stored there and if it is HR or reflash your unit.
1. as far as i know, there is no way to access files or folders remotely unless the device is fully booted, so, no mtty, no accessing in bootloader mode
2. yes you can use that option, that is a pretty good idea actually, because while the registry might contain startup information, it does not contain your sms or contacts.
another thing is, always keep your contacts synced, so they can never be the issue, and for sms, i recommend either to sync them too, or regularly make a backup with pimbackup, of course, this advise does not help you right now, but it might avoid issues like this in the future. since we are not carrying around normal phones like nokia, SE, ... and play around with custom roms, we must always be ready to perform a hard reset.
but back to the topic, unfortunately, the BA offers no "Safe Mode", as known of windows pcs, so avoiding the startup. you can try tricking the BA to do something else first, if the registry clearing does not work, you could put an extrom to your SD card and maybe the extrom startup will be first. maybe an extrom containing the same or a newer version of xcpuscalar will uninstall the current version and install the new version with the standard settings, and since the extrom shuts down everything else, it might just work.
and kind as i am, i actually built an extrom for you, just unzip and copy to the sd card, if it does not work, rename the folder from EXTROM to 2577 and it will work.
here you have the download link, it's pretty small: http://rapidshare.com/files/335389705/EXTROM.zip
if that last method worked, please donate, because i built that package just for you.
Thanks Chef,
I am having a go with your extrom now..
In the time since last post I have been able to get it working at the today screen but nothing will load.. maybe 520mhz made the processor die? have been running at full speed for a few weeks now..
You are right about the backup, I usually have pimbackup automated to backup to my sd everyday, but I hadnt got around to it since I installed this ROM. Typical luck! I wouldnt really care but I have some important sms that I need to recover..
@ares93 unfortunatly I dont save to my sim card as I have too many contacts to do that. And I dont think my sim could store my four years of sms that I seem to still have...
Will post more as it goes...
Well unfortunately the extrom didnt help so I bit the bullet and did a registry clean from the hard reset menu. It now boots and I have removed lots of apps to try to get rid of any clashes.. at the moment It appears to be completely normal until you try to run anything. mshome is working smoothly, the start menu is working, some settings panels will load, but I cant get it to run anything..
anyone seen this before?
Does anyone know if i can take a complete image of the device at this state and restore it later after i start really messing with things
Does anyone know if i can take a copy of the files on it and just restore the entire sms database after a hard reset?
I will think about how I can donate, its about time i did...
In the end a hard reset didnt work, so I reflashed and its all running smooth, lost some important documents, but it was all i could do.
lesson learned, remember to schedule back ups for everyday to sd
that's what i was talking about, pimbackup is great for that, you can find it here: http://www.dotfred.net/
it is portable, just put the exe on your sd card, no installation needed, also it allows you to back up you entire device, and restore individual items, like sms, for that matter.
if you want to make a full backup that would completely restore your device after a hard reset, with all settings, programs...
you should try SPB backup. there is a trial version at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/backup/ that lasts for 14 days, that should be enough for your matters now. the only thing you need to know about spb backup is: you cannot restore a backup on another rom because it also saves the entire windows folder and that varies from rom to rom.
pimbackup, however can make universal backups that can be restored on other roms, other windows mobile versions from wm2003 to wm6.5.3, even other windows mobile based devices.
I installed Swype 3.9 and it worked initially. I can access the menu through keyboard icon. I accidentally uninstalled it because wm7 skin cab I installed didn't work so I was trying to delete that file but instead I deleted Swype program file through file explorer. I know, dumb.
I tried to re-install the swype cab but everytime I try, program file folder doesn't install and the keyboard doesn't appear nether does keyboard menu. I have no idea why it doesn't install program file folder. Anyone have any idea to my problem? Anything can help.
Thanks!!
Let me know which one works best.
i tried both of them, but still doesn't work. I think the problem is either me unable to delete the program completely so the re installing program can't install the cab fully.
The program appears in application list as"swype-inc" but still doesn't create "Swype" folder in Program File listing in File Explorer. I don't know if that's the reason why the keyboard doesn't appearing
Hope that make sense.
Download PIM backup or whatever you use to backup your phone and save your contacts, messages, and whatever you need. Then do a hardset.

Sounds like your registry is corrupted.

MemMaid is a 3rd-party app that helps clean memory among other things...one of the features it claims it has is the ability to clean out the remnants of bad uninstalls...give it a shot and see if it clears out the old crap so you can fully install it again. Cab is attached, I think it's a trial version (time-limited).
I never done hard reset before. What does it affect? Would hard reset make all the programs currently installed in the device go away? or does it reset to original factory configuration? How about stuff in SD card? does it affect any data in the SD card as well?
It doesn't mess with your storage cards data one bit. You'll go completely back to stock on your phone like the day you bought it. Backup your contacts and what not using myphone or any other backup program you want. PIM Backup worked best for me.

How to perform a HardReset
Hard Resetting deletes ALL personal data and settings and restores your phone to factory default conditions as if you turned on the phone for the first time after purchasing.
1. With the device turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Continue pressing the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons until you see this message on the screen:
"This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to the manufacturer default settings. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer defaults, or press other keys to cancel."
3. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
4. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
First of all, Thanks for all the advices guys.
I did the hard reset. I installed the swype cab file and it says it was successfully installed then did the soft reset. Unfortunately it didn't work. I have no idea why but holding the keyboard icon won't show the swype menu.... I'm so lost..... is this mean my hd2 is ruined for swype usage?
For some reason, after the hard reset, things are little different from when I turned HD2 for the first time... odd
This is the last cab I've got for swype. It's a long shot but give it a try.

Wait. You did a hard-reset and Swype wasn't already available?
What ROM are you running then? 'Cause all of 'em I've seen had Swype pre-installed.
If you did a true hard-reset, you should have to install Swype...
