I just wanted to drop a quick battery tip in here. - EVO 4G General

This might not be a good tip if you're a "power user" but for normal folks it adds up to quite a bit of battery savings. It's basically something that Ultimate Juice does, but you can do it manually in about 1 second. I use Extended Controls for this little trick. I install a widget that allows you to enable/disable mobile data. When you choose the mobile data button it asks you what you want the function of the widget to be. Choose the one that actually turns off your mobile data. I use this every day and it's been a HUGE help to me. You can still receive calls and texts, but not G-Talk, internet, emails, etc. I've tried disabling "enable always on mobile data" which turns off mobile data when your phone "sleeps" but it doesnt give me the same results. I also add the "sync" button to my widget, that way I can enable data, manually sync then disable data pretty quickly. Like I said, it's not gonna be a big help for people who want to stay synced 100% of the time. But I've left my phone in my car while I was at work and when I came out it literally had not dropped even 1% And it was in there for over 8 hours. Anyways, I just wanted to try to contribute something back since this forum has been a gigantic help to me with all of my phone escapades lol.

Yep, I do the same. Huge difference to turn off 3G data when not using it.
Does't stop SMS or phone calls.

Good tip for those who do not need gmail/gvoice notifications.

you dont need to download anything, its in the shut down menu and htc has a widget for it if you run sense, not sure if android has a default widget or not but if you are running sense, go to add widget settings mobile network so if disabling 3g is all you need/want, its easier to go that route

Auto data connection disconnect

Helo my beloved community!
So, since the HD2 utilizes quite a lot of the data connection quite frequently (mostly for weather updates), it would be good to have an option to disconnet the data connection automatically. I presume that this is probably a registry hack. This feature can be found for example in TD2/TP2 Tools. I don't want to wait until HD2 Tolls (or Tweaks or something else) shows up (I hope it will quickly because its always something very welcome!), so maybe someone could answer quickly where to tamper with the registry to do that?
Thx in advance!

I've used an old tweak I found which seems to have done the trick, not really watched it closely enough to find out as not had time yet.

thanks for the reply but ive installed the cab and restarted but it doesnt seem to do anything
I just did the mentioned reg edits but it didn't seem to work. Then installed the cab to countercheck for my mistake. Didnt change the result, didn't work...
Even though I noticed the CacheTime setting existed from the start and was set to 600 (10 minutes).
SuspendResume original value was "~GPRS!"
Data charges are not so much the issue, I'm just concerned it might drain the battery quicker if the connection remains open permanently.

Try to do the regedits like this:
SuspendResume=GPRS_bye_if_device_off
CacheTime=5 (decimal)
VPNCacheTime=5 (decimal)
It works on my TD2, which to my knowledge has the same WM6.5 as the HD2 does. By the way, did You set the end call button long press to "terminate data connection"? If You did, then UNDO it

Right, You can't check it, as none of the HD2's hardware buttons are configurable Just ignore that question. Anyway, I think Ive figured it out to some point. It looks like the registry hack works whenever the phone connects to the web to for example browse the internet or update stocks. But it DOESN'T WORK if the phone connects to download weather updates. It looks like the Sense weather app is somehow preventing the data connection to shut down. But I think it only happens when automatic weather updates downloading is set.
hmm you do appear to be correct... now why is the weather app hanging onto the data session
Well, just tried setting both CacheTime and VPNCachetime and when checking mail I can confirm it works.
Thanks a lot! Mail checking schedule set up.

absolutely no idea I think someone smarter than us should try to find the answer. Ive already done a rather brief look around the registry and tried to find something that would get the weather app such privileges but with no success. Im thinking of addressing a new topic about that, so its more visible to the community

Twitter app doesn't close the data connection either
This is really annoying me. My battery was draining fast and could not find out why. Now I have found out that it is because I am constantly connected to Mobile Web on O2. I have tried terminating it but it starts again. Even after unchecking auto update for weather and twitter it still turns on and never off. I have mail set to download automatically but if i turn that off too then what is the point of having this phone and feature?
I have tried the setting in HD Tweak app to turn off data after 1 minute but noy joy.
Any help? Pleaseee.

Theres one more thing you should check out. The biggest connection-demander was always the NOT PROPPERLY CLOSED OPERA. If you use the opera browser, be sure to close it NOT with the X in the upper right corner, but through Opera Menu->exit function. If you close it with X, it only goes minimized and does not shut down the connection. Even if you close it, because opera is still running, after some time it will want to refresh a page and conect again. Thats why you have the imression that the phone connects by itsself. Thats not the phone, its opera

Also as stated, weather, opera etc will keep your data connection active...so end task and it should shut down a few seconds later.

I have installed a shortcut to taskmgr in my quicklinks - so if i see something constantly running i end task...it shuts it down rather than minimising it which is what happens when you hit the little X in most cases. The taskmgr tip is in the sticky at the top of the page.

Yes I know what you mean but you can't kill the weather app or twitter in this fashion as they run within Sense itsself. Besides, killing processes is not the point. The point is to have an automatic data disconnection, so you dont have to do or kill anything

FR008 - Apps starting automatically

I rooted to FR008 recently and I've noticed that a lot of apps are starting automatically. Far more than the stock ROM. I use atk to kill then but they restart within moments.
yeah, I might be a little ocd about having things running, but the bigger problem is that a bunch of them start up when I turn on mobile data or wifi. everything competes for bandwidth at once
And so it slows down the app I'm trying to use.
Any recommendations?
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
when you say they start up, what exactly do you mean? what apps are starting? do they just open and run in the background, or are they forcibly starting and taking over your screen? as for having certain programs start up when turning on some form of data, i've never experienced that particular issue.
don't blindly kill every task thats running, as the android os manages RAM and running apps differently than a windows pc.
i would highly recommend going to this thread and reading the posted links about task managers.
using a task killer on froyo is useless as the apps are restarted rather than killed

They start and run in the background. On most, I don't notice except for when I go to my task killer. Others show up with an icon in the task bar when data is turned on (see below)

Yep. When wifi or 3G data connects it goes crazy. I get a sync icon in the task bar (don't know if it's Google finance or Gmail) and most of the above-mentioned apps plus, Yahoo mail (which I do use) all start up and start trying to grab data.

+1 - Get rid of any automatic task killer apps.
as far as apps opening and running in the background, as i mentioned, its normal. android handles all of its running processes much differently than a normal computer os. having a lot of programs running isn't necessarily a bad thing, as you'll find through reading the linked post.
with apps syncing as soon as you turn data/wifi on, that also is normal. they don't bother trying when data is shut off, but once theres an available connection, they are going to try and grab the most current data so as to be accurate.
do you use most/any of the apps that are running? if not, many apps that can't be removed normally can be removed via this method.

Would one of the "Autostart" apps be able to prevent this from happening? Often, I want to simply jump on and check my mail or the weather. With 3 or 4 apps starting up & competing for data all at once, I have to wait for a minute or so before I get what I want. This is especially annoying when I'm in an area with a weak reception.

I'll get rid of the ones I don't use, but I do use some of them so I don't want to wipe them all out. That's why it would be nice to be able to configure an Autostart app as noted above..

you could turn off background data, or at least check your sync options and make sure programs you don't want trying to auto-sync are un-checked. that way, the only program that would use your data connection would be the one you are using at that moment.
Turn off auto-sync if you don't want them to do that. As previously mentioned, as soon as a data connection is available the apps that are set to auto-sync are going to go out and get the most recent data. Turning that off will just mean you have to sync whatever it is manually. But, it will stop the **** from "starting" automatically, which btw, is normal. Just because they are in the background and "running" (<- according to your task killer) doesn't mean they are "running" in the true sense of the word. It also doesn't mean that they are ALL trying to grab data and suck up bandwidth. Maps shouldn't be starting automatically, gmail is normal because you probably have autosync enabled for it. Task killers are detrimental, would advise you stop using them. Also, I used to be OCD like that as well because of how I am on a computer.
The OCD is hard to get over, but I've stopped using the task killer.
I already had AutoSync disabled, but background data was on.
I am going to try something for a few days..
I have JuiceDefender installed, and one of its' features is to turn data on for 2 minutes, twice per hour. My thinking is that letting those apps start automatically and grab what they need on their own will prevent them from jumping on my bandwidth when I manually turn data on for a one particular need.
The reason I didn't do this before is because I get a pretty large quantity of email on my Yahoo account, and don't want notifications bugging me all the time. I just turned off notifications in Ymail (duh!) and will check it when I want. Presumably, with the 2 minute/30 minute data schedule, I won't even have to turn data on to see my recent emails.

Noticed changes in DL30

I don’t see a thread like this so I would like to start one
I have noticed a ton of changes in the stock DL30 build and there are still some i probably haven’t ran into yet. I think it would be fun to see what changes people have noticed. . I know a lot of these are in the original leak thread but that thread is too saturated with questions and issues people are having.
I would kind of like to keep it clean so I would like to see lists of changes only and not a ton of questions.
I will start off with a few things I have noticed so far. I have left out some of the obvious things that comes with froyo but feel free to add them if you wish
-Facebook syncs contacts automatically. No need to get friends and then check the ones you want from Facebook
-You can now manually join contacts. Maybe you could do this before?
-You can now use custom ringtones for contacts that aren’t local on the phone
-You can use media files for ringtones
-Can now use multiple exchange accounts
-Can now use out of office for exchange accounts
-Can use pin unlock even though it doesn’t work because it says you need a symbol
-New theme which I actually like.
-Has new e-mail and text counts on the Touch wiz icons
-Can use media or voice tones for alarm
-The sliding thingy when you are typing, makes it much easier to correct spelling mistakes
-Can change fonts
-Media hub added
-Includes Samsung keyboard which I prefer over the others now
-Dock now works!
Only thing I don't like is that you have to enable background data in order to do anything related to data. Never had to do that before.
Anyone got yahoo email setup on the new DL30? I tried to read email (HTML based) from like amazon and other spam I usually get and now it say message too long, cant not display.

Email count on the home screen is awesome....

Few things I noticed so far:
For exchange accounts it lets you choose seperate peak and off peak sync times which is cool.
The notifications has an auto-rotation on/off button along with your wifi, bt etc. But it doesn't really work with your homescreens unless you install laungher pro or something.
Signal strength has definitely increased.
Also, after I got DL30, I was asked to update camera firmware, and that added a couple of minor changes to camera.
Also forgot to mention that while in Car or Desk cradle the home screen now is landscape. Also when you get calls when on either the call screen is landscape!!! can you say "Awesome"!!!!
jv
And I am sure everyone is dying to know this, they replaced blockbuster with media hub.
Couple of things, keep in mind I was rooted running a custom ROM previously and now have LP running:
1. I like the changes to gmail (I was used to 2.2 gmail from my droid, took me a sec to figure where the send button moved to)
2. For whatever reason, after flashing and restoring apps with Titanium, I was debinged, however, that applies to voice search and all functions of the car dock aside from basic search. Hence, none of those functions work (voice search, navigation, maps. Not a deal breaker..just an observation.
3. The battery icon seems likes it's not even tied to the actual charge amount. Again..no big deal, I use simi clock and I check my battery there.
4. Gallery renders FAST..
5. Market still on old version...hasn't updated yet.
Haven't had a chance to really check any flash websites but will get around to it.
Issue with back button from contacts
Has anyone else had the back button stop working when in contacts?
It worked fine when I first got done with the update, then sometime after sync of facebook it stopped working. Not sure if that was the cause but something made it stop.
Be sure to open up the camera app. New firmware there.
I also noticed some of the bloat apps I had to remove when I first got my phone are gone. CityID immediately comes to mind (which I thought was the worst thing ever!), but I also noticed the Kindle app is missing and someone already mentioned Blockbuster. I thought they were more, but my memory is escaping me now.
The stock music player is also different, but this is my first Android device and thus first experience with 2.2, so this might just be a froyo thing. When I'm playing music and turn the screen off, when I turn it back on to the lock screen, there's a piece of CD hanging from the top of the screen. This can be pulled down to control the music. I never noticed this before, but I also may have never used the music player with the puzzle lock screen. Anyway, it's a cool feature that I dig. If I change to the AOSP lock screen (which I like way more than the puzzle lock), will this feature still be present?
I found a workaround for the Exchange pin issue.
If you setup a PIN before you setup your Exchange account from settings-> location & security-> screen unlock, it will work. You'll still see the message about device security needing to be setup at first but it will start syncing and not ask again.
Hope this helps!

This was the main thing that bugged me on this rom and i was able to get around it. If you have the security policies already pushed you can go into Device administrator and remove the one for your exchange account, then go change your PIN, after a while your e-mail account will tell you that you need to enable the security policy again.
Thanks again!

Yup, CityID, Blockbuster, Kindle, the demos for Need for Speed and Tetris and a few others.
I'm wondering if this was an early version of 2.2, before they had a chance to add all that crap in. Would be nice if Verizon listened to their customers and actually choose to leave that stuff out in 2.2.
you have to go to the market and download adobe flash player 10.1
i have noticed SIGNIFICANT battery/signal strength increase.. I was barely able to get 16 hours out of my battery before and now mines been on for 14 hours and its still at 60 percent.. my time without a signal was at like 30% on DL09 or DJ05 and now its at 4% without a signal. much more memory available.. could be because im using super clean tho..

I am using tasker but it says data not available try secure settings, which I have. Also I can set a GPS toggle but when trying to use it it does nothing.
Could be an issue with secure settings app. Couldn't tell you since I have chosen not to root for now. My main reason for rooting other phones was to tame the bloat. With the exception of GPS on and off with certain apps, tasker works just fine for the functions I want so secure settings is not a must have.
What tasks do you have running? Sorry I've rooted many phones but I'm a noob to tasker.
I have a variety running such as wifi at home, rotation and custom brightness on or off based off apps, and custom alarms dependent upon calendar entries, day of the week and times. The thing with tasker is that with root and the right third party apps, the things you can do are too numerous to list. Just read up on it and come up with things you want your phone to do. Then read some more so you can set up profiles to do this things. I will admit that if you are new to tasker and do not have programming background, it seems daunting. However, once I got into it was fun and I can't up with new ideas. Once it is setup with the profiles you want, you can sit back as your phone will be automated.

I actually do have some programming background which is what drew me to tasker. I currently have one profile set up for home which automates my wifi on. I was hoping for GPS and data off, at said locatio, but no biggie. I'll keep playing around and create more profiles. I'm just glad it was the app not me that was the problem. One last thing is there an xposed app or some way tasker can set auto brightness? That's the one thing I miss from previous phones.

I actually do have some programming background which is what drew me to tasker. I currently have one profile set up for home which automates my wifi on. Make sure that system+ in enabled in the Secure Settings app. gps off/on should work fine, but for data on/off you have to make a task that has about 2 or 3 seperate actions. I can help with that if you'd like, as i have data off/on when i connect/disconnect from wifi. what are you trying to set auto brightness on during? like a time of the day or when you use a certain app?

System plus is enabled and I was able to get auto brightness to work. The GPS on/off says it works yet my location light in the notification bar doesn't turn off. Yes I would love help with the data. Thanks in advance!

So I made a task and called it Data off. you'll want to Add>Net>Test Net. Type=Mobile Data Enabled, Store Result in=%Data. Second action will be Code>Run Shell, command=svc data disable, if=%Data~yes. Third action will b e variable>variable clear, name=%Data.
Next you'll make a task called Data On. First action is Add>Net>Test Net. Type=Mobile Data Enabled, Store Result in=%Data. Second action will be Code>Run Shell, command=svc data enable, if=%Data~No. Third action will b e variable>variable clear, name=%Data.
Now you make a new profile that becomes active with the wifi connected state. set that to trigger the Data off task, and add select data on as your exit task.
This may seem a bit of a roundabout way to do things, but i think since LL, android no longer allows any third party app or plug in to toggle the data. so the way around that is through the shell commands. Hope this helps!
Hi thefallen924, thanks for this walkthrough on mobile data, I have a noob question though, do I need root for it to work? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this. I'm definitely saving the task but not enabling it just yet. Between posts I set up gavity box mm and it seems to be doing what I wanted with it's smart radio.

I had the same problem, it seems secure settings can't turn on/off the data. A found a solution using Code -> Run Shell -> Command: svc data enable (or disable) and check the Use Root option.
It works fine that way.

Very nice and simple. I just tried it, confirmed it's working and updated my tasks!! Any backdoor GPS methods?
Fit secure settings to work with data connection you do need root.

WhatsApp connectivity S8

Hey guys!
I just moved from a rooted LG G4 running Lollipop to the S8 Exynos. It really seems to be a great phone but I'm having issues with WhatsApp.
Sometimes I feel like the messages aren't really coming up in time, I can open the app and see no new message, close the app, open it again and it will reconnect and show me new messages.
It is even more noticeable while using the WhatsApp desktop program on Windows 10. I see a lot of yellow messages saying I'm not connected to the phone OR when I send a messages I see the "clock" instead of the single-double check right away.
My WiFi setting is set to "Always".
I'm not using any battery save option from the phone.
I installed Greenify (not rooted) but WhatsApp is not in the list to hibernate
Any ideas of what is going on? I didn't have this problem on the G4.
have you added whatsapp into the 'unmonitored apps' section in battery settings?
Can you check BBS and see if WA is using crazy amount of sensor usage? Mine is. I had to turn off battery optimization for WA to work.

It is there. I don't remember adding it into the unmonitored apps but it is there.

Sorry, what is BBS?
I've been playing and trying to figure out what is going on. I found out that my phone is running on "optimized" and not in High Performance, Game or Entertainment. Do you guys think this has something to do with it? It shouldn't be this way right? I also have WhatsApp set to ignore any battery save option, according to the app options.
Also, yesterday I turned off my router. I received a message just before turning it off and I saw the notification on the Windows program like I usually do but it took a couple of minutes for the phone to let me know I received a notification, even though the phone had no connection to the internet. lol what?

BetterBatteryStats. No, you should be using optimized.

Thanks! I downloaded the app but I need to do the ADB thing and I left the USB cable at home lol (now I need to buy multiple ones and aren't cheap)
I also noticed that I do receive the visual notifications (like in the notification bar) but the sound and LED notification comes way later.
Anyone solve the sensor issues
I was finally able to solve this problem and decided to put how I did it in case anyone can benefit from it.
I did check that Whatsapp was listed as "Unmonitored apps" in the battery section of device manager, but still had the problem. After further internet research I noticed that people where pointing to the Android's Optimize battery section, which seems that is doing a very similar functionality but is accessed from a completely different place, so make sure Whatsapp is not being "optimized" from here either.
To find this section go to Settings-> Apps -> Click the 3 Dots menu in the top right -> Special access -> Optimize battery usage -> Select "All apps" from the dropdown menu. In here, make sure Whatsapp and any other app that you cannot risk to go to sleep unintended shows as disabled (not being optimized).
Hope this helps someone with this disconnections.
