I apologize if there is already a thread like this, but the search wasnt working.. I know what i can do with my phone once it is rooted, I am just interested in what happens tot he actual phone. I could be wrong, but once i root it isnt it always possible to tell that i rooted it even if i unroot it so therefor all warantees are voided? sorry if im being unclear, i cant think of another way to explain it haha.

The language on the "warranty void" screen says that unlocking the bootloader "may" void your warranty. On the Nexus One, HTC usually honored the warranty if the issue was with anything hardware related and could not have been the result of software tampering. Granted, that's them and this is Samsung.
Further, unless there is something hidden in the system files that counts the number of times you unlock the bootloader, you can always relock it prior to sending it in for repair with fastboot oem lock.

So there is a way to kind of undo the root without them knowing? THanks a lot btw. I figured it was something like this.

In a nutshell, unlocking the bootloader means you will be allowed to flash non-Google/custom files to the system partition and more or less enables superuser access(aka root). Once thats done, then you "root" the device, push the Superuser.apk which will enable the rooted apps. Please check out the rooted section of my stickied FAQ for more detail on how to do this if you decide to. There are two great threads I link to.
Once you lock the bootloader, you lose access to the system partition and superuser I believe which effectively unroots it.

So basically if you want to do any sort of mods, flash roms, etc. you need to unlock the bootload and root. Thanks a lot for explaining that. I think i understand it now, but just to clarify, if i unlock the bootloader and root will i be able to get the phone back to stock without samsung knowing that i rooted/unlock the bootloader?

Yes, to mod/flash roms you need to unlock the bootloader. It's possible that sometime down the road someone may develop a method of gaining root access on the phone without touching it, but it's unlikely given the fact that we can both unlock and lock the bootloader very easily.
Right now, the answer is... more or less. If you make a NAND backup in Clockwork Recovery/Rom manager of your stock ROM, you can restore back to that, fastboot flash the closest thing we have currently to the stock recovery(check development section for this), then relock the bootloader. This will give the phone all appearances of being stock. Unless Samsung has something deep in the system files tracking the number of times you've unlocked/locked(which I doubt, since I'm sure such a system would have been found by now), you should be good to go.
Most people who have returned the phone to Best Buy have noted that they don't even power on the device or check to see if the bootloader is unlocked or if there's a custom recovery on there. But your mileage may vary.
Interesting stuff. I was under the impression that once clockworkmod is flashed there is no way to remove it at this time.
Reading this thread I'm guessing and hoping this is not the case?
I had clockworkmod installed but used rom manager to flash the 2.3.1 update and i've now got the stock bootloader back. I guess the ota update does the same? It would seem that getting back to stock is pretty easy.

My apologies, I posted that before I came to the same understanding regarding the stock recovery.
Like the poster above me mentioned there is a NAND backup of stock 2.3.1 you could restore to which has the stock recovery.

So, just want to make sure I have this straight... You unlock the bootloader, load custom recovery, SU, and now phone is rooted. If you lock the bootloader, you lose root?
For me, I'm not big on custom roms since I just don't have time to keep things up to date or participate in the bug process, but I do like to maintain backups with Titanium (my primary reason for rooting). So by locking the bootloader down I will not be able to use Titanium. Furthermore, unlocking the bootloader wipes the device. So is there a reason one would not want to keep the bootloader unlocked? Have I completely misunderstood the system?

I would like to warn everybody that the use of the permanent root option of visionary can lead to an unrecoverable brick!
Lately we are facing an increasing number of bricked phones that have been created by an attempt to permanent root the G2 (or Desire Z) using visionary.
While there is still cure for Desire Z phones (even if it is a complicated procedure) there are certain conditions for the G2 where nothing can be done to rescue the phone.
These are the conditions:
- the phone is S-ON and not SuperCID
- the hboot and the recovery are still stock
- the main software version is 1.22
When visionary corrupts the system partition (which it does some times) the phone can not boot anymore. And as there is no original stock rom (PC10IMG.zip) for the G2 that has software version 1.22 or higher the stock rom can not be installed from hboot.
And with the stock recovery there is also no chance to cure the system partition or change the main version in the misc partition.
But even if the brick can be cured for other phones (Desire Z, Desire HD) this is totally unnecessary because the phones can be rooted and freed by methods that do not have any risk at all (even if you do some steps wrong).
The method that I highly recommend to use is the one described on the XDA-wiki at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD.
This method is constantly maintained and is the most up to date method.
If you really are not able or willing to use adb I would recommend the method described by ianmcquinn in the thread "[GUIDE] Permanent Root with Visionary/gfree (No ADB Required)" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
It is less up to date but it uses visionary only to gain temporary root and it uses scripts for the necessary commands so that the risk of bricking the phone by typos in important commands is minimized.
Scotty2 and I (and a lot of other people) tried our best to make the rooting process as easy and risk less as possible and therefore it is very frustrating to see people who bricked their phones by using an unnecessary, outdated and risky method.

Since football dropped the new gingerbread T-Mobile ROM (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074391) a G2 bricked by visionary can be cured. (which is a complicated procedure of course)

On my first G2 I used the visionary method and it messed up after about 2 weeks.
It wouldn't connect to the wireless network.
On my second G2 I used the gfree/rage method and, it has worked just fine.
I'm sure with all the visionary problems people are having, it probably had something to do with mine going bad.
I am waiting on an insurance replacement G2, glad I found this. I rooted mine the very first method that was posted. So does Visionary have a checkbox in the app or something to permanent root? I was using the first release of it.
:edit Just got my G2 from UPS at 1:20, and now at 1:50 I am already flashing CM7 Visionary is great, glad I saw not to do Perm Root attempt though haha

i rooted my g2 a few weeks back, installed the cyanogenmod 7(which seems solid btw) & honestly dont remember the method i used (it took multiple tries over multiple posts/guides/websites) but i recall visionary was involved at some point.
anyhow should i be worried about this thing becoming useless? should i be reinstalling/uninstalling something? are there any precautions i should be taking? is there a way to tell what method i used?

If you're already rooted you should be good. The method that uses VISIONary/Gfree was posted in January, the latest thing that said it could cause any problems was an update on December 23rd, and from what I understand is that you'd have to downgrade a Desire Z... Didn't say anything about a G2. I'm sitting here waiting for UPS then I'll be doing this.
hmm ok, thanks, ill continue to slowly set it up for use than & keep an eye out for additional posts/info on the subject. i sure would hate to doorstop the thing before even using it.

The only issue I've encountered with the way I did was that it says phone number unknown. Quick xda search found you go into Call settings, additional settings, and you can set the phone number in there
Well, I used the Visionary + gfree way to permanent root today, and it went smoothly, on the 1st try, no problems, as of yet. I ran root check and noticed that busybox isn't installed. Is it supposed to be? It was when I was using temp root. Is it ok, to install busybox from the app from the Market?

I'm not sure it will work the same way since I don't have a pc... Do you know someway around this? Or some other way I can root my phone on my mac...

It should be no problem to root your phone on a Mac. The guide to setting up adb in my signature has a section on how to do so on a Mac.
I perm rooted with visionary method the day it came out (I think this was November or October?). Was on cm 6 and now been on cm 7 for a while. No issues at all. Guess I was lucky or people are doing it without being careful.
My friend's G2 seems to be bricked under these conditions. Failed Visionary root. He's counting on me to fix it.
The recovery is stock and it has S-ON. How can I check the version?

You can't.
Just try to install the 1.19 PC10IMG.zip using hboot and you will see. If it installs you'r good if it tells you that you version is to high you are 1.22

i have been searching since 5pm yesterday and it is now 1030am.
I have been able to load an update through the stock recovery and it shows that it went well. when it reboots to the screen with the grean circle arrows over the phone, it doesnt seem to take enought time to be loading image or other software. and when its done and reboots, its still stuck on htc screen.
any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry if i cluttered up this thread.

I agree with this thread but back then there was only one root tool for the HTC Desire Z or G2 persay. If there is another tool I am unwilling to unroot and reroot again if possible. But I agree that Visionary++ increases the chances of a bricked phone with a percent of about 55%

If you used Visionary, and it worked, then you don't need to worry about unrooting and rooting again. If there were going to be any problems, it would have happened as you were rooting. If you didn't run gfree, and are not Super-CID, S-Off, then you might want to do that (you still can). But otherwise, you are good to go.

i just hit it up this for info on rooting my atrix i aquired... long story short i found a beta program called rescue root that works
i just rooted my bell atrix 4g, gingerbread 2.3.6, build 4.5.2a-51_oll-17.8
all i did was install motorola device manager program from the moto site, installed rescue root, connected my device and ran the program and rooted in under 10 mins, confirmed by root checker app, titainium backup and other various app requiring superuser permission
also i did not have to unlock the boot loader before i ran the program

i thought you had to unlock the bootloader first in order to root... not root in order to unlock the boot loader, guess i'll hit up moto's website again as theres a unlock your boot loader option there
but either way, just thought i'd share a new quick root method with the world that caters to those less technically gifted like me
i guess they only just released this beta and turns out the developer is actually just across town from me which is kinda cool
forgive the newbish excitment i only just snagged this phone off ebay since i bricked my old android by deleting things i shouldn't have without backing up first

I think you have it all completely mixed up.
You have to unlock the bootloader to be able to flash custom ROMs. Rooting is completely separate and has nothing to do with anything else - you don't need to unlock anything to root, and rooting won't help you get anything else (unlocking, flashing) done. It is literally completely separate.
It would probably help you to do more reading on the subject. Getting informed and educated can only ever be a good thing.
I have just recently started my journey into rooting, I've been in research mode for about a week trying to learn as much as I can but it's SO overwhelming trying to keep up with all the old and new techniques - trying to find out what is the best method to use.

I've watched a few videos on how to root a htc but they've all been made around the time of the phones release, and as we all know each year things get bigger and better in computing, so new techniques might have arrived. So I wanted to ask here what are the full sets of instructions to root a htc one m8 in 2016, starting from watch software to use to back up your phone, how to unlock the bootloader, etc... and using whatever new rooms and kernels people have been using and would recommend.
My aim is, with your help, to make this post a place beginners can go to learn how to do their first root. thankyou in advance.

3) gain S-off, which makes system partition accessible outside of the custom recovery. the phone can be enjoyed the same as any other rooted device at this stage. **this can only be done one way, and that one single way isn't free.**
you want to have all the stages mentioned in that link covered apart from the last firmware guide which is more optional.
How are you getting S-off that isn't free? I had S-off within a week of owning my phone back when it was new, and I'm on Verizon, they are the devil when it comes to modding anything. Have you looked into Sunshine?

Just rechecked into it to refresh my memory, as I've been S-off so long I forgot the method I had used. It was in the pre-Sunshine days. I used Firewater to get S-off (thought Sunshine sounded odd to me for some reason). Didn't cost me anything but a couple minutes of my time. Hope that helps. I wouldn't want to pay for S-off either, it's not really something that I think many people would want to do...

If you have a way to revert it and become S-on again (assuming you're S-off also) I would say you could hide the fact it's been rooted by unrooting and removing any root apps, but don't quote me on that. I rooted back when mine was new, and never looked back at the warranty. Now my phone would have had the warranty expire anyway, so it still doesn't matter. When in doubt, assume the warranty to be void upon rooting, but research a way to revert if it's possible. Not like we have to bother with KNOX at least.
only way is USD $25 for sunshine....can't S-OFF it without other ways.

firewater doesn't work anymore unfortunately. Only way to get S-Off now is sunshine @ USD 25.

Hi I can't root mine . Every time I try to get token it says that it's a incorrect file batch path or something like that? Do you know what the problem is?

Sorry. I have my issue fixed now as I just needed to type cmd on the top of the window to get token to unlock bootloader token. Flashed aicp 14.0 working excellent. Much faster, better battery oh only arm 9.0 pico seemed like the best gapps as I tried other ones didn't work. Man it took a lot of searching to do this as things are posted all over the place

Meaning what exactly? Doesn't see storage (did you select the option on the phone to allow data transfer?) or adb or fastboot? Booted to the custom ROM, or something else (bootloader, recovery)?
When asking for help, please give as much information as possible. One sentence is really never enough info to go on.
At the risk of being barked at by the spirited young hackers on this forum:
After days of searching the interwebs, I am close to resetting to factory settings and returning this thing, even though I really like the phone itself.
Admittedly, I'm a total Android virgin and know only what many hours of googl'ing have left behind (it's all a blur, at this point), but after all of my attempts to use the common rooting suspects (KingoRoot, King Root, iRoot, etc.), I sit here more confused than I can handle.
First attempts at figuring out adb and fastboot made me realise I am in way over my head.
Anyone know of a way to root my XZP running Pie, from my Mac, for free (if at all possible), without first having to get a degree in computer science. I can stumble my way around Terminal, if given clear instructions, but that's where it ends.
hope someone can help.
I really want to get the EU firmware flashed onto this thing, with the modem working as designed for the US market, and hopefully use this thing as a router and many other things that require root access.
But I also read the thread about people like me, who don't know much about Android, ruining their bootloaders and then coming here for help/support...so the question for me arises is: reset to factory settings and return it, before I get myself into quicksand territory, or do whatever it takes to figure it out (with the help of the esteemed community).
It's just such a nice phone, and I miss the iOS jailbreaking days so much, that this would be the perfect antidote.

yeah, I am set on the XZP, as my first Android phone. It serves my primary purpose of being a little presentation device for my 4K video and photography work perfectly, I already enjoy it as a very good Hi-Res music player, it will hopefully serve me as a little portable router/VPN, etc. once I figure out how to root it, and it was a great deal, for a used one, for so much power. But I also want to be able to use its fingerprint sensor, here in the USA, and for that...
So when you say that "a very good manual" is out there, would you be so kind as to share a link? I tried to follow so many methods, at this point, that I am at the end of my wits.

thanks again, mad0701...I was out riding all day and just skimmed over that link...first reaction: this is more advanced than I feel confident tackling...I fear that a one wrong action on my part might leave me in a situation where I can't even get the phone back to factory settings, and won't be able to return it anymore (for which I have one week left).
I'll read through the manual in more detail, maybe tomorrow, and if it seems that I can actually do all that, successfully, then maybe I will give it a try. But since I don't even know what the TA is, or the TWRP version, it may be something I may not wanna get into at this time...only so many hours in the day.

Lots of people keep pointing at this thread without actually reading it. There still isn't a way to relock your bootloader with your saved TA partition. Yes you can save your individualy encrypted key, but then what?
You still need to unlock your phone to get permanent root, with no way of putting the key back in place, so you still need a 'fixed' kernel
If you want an easy way to root your phone, as you admit yourself your android experience is limited., then I would recomend Xperifix
@sToRm// wrote a one stop shop program that did everything, but then took his work to a private website as he wanted to charge for all the hours that he put into it.
The original thread is here, this would tell you what to do and the drivers you need to install (important). Then the go to the Xperiafix website and pay your $20.
I used it to root my XZ1 compact and it really was as easy as plug it in and follow instructions.
The only probelm with this is that there still isn't a root available for Pie firmware, so his fix is based on Oreo builds.
Lots of people speak badly of Xperiafix 'why pay for a fix when you can get it for free?'
Yea, but free is complicated and I'm happy to pay for easy.
Edit: To answer your original question, I'm not sure there is a Pie root kenel for a stock rom available yet, I know @janjan posted a Pie kernel on the XZ1compact thread, so it's just a matter of time before he updates the XZ premium
You could go with a custom rom to get rooted Pie, read the instructions and decide if you're up for it.

Theres no need for a kernel for pie, flash pie, flash twrp flash magisk. That's it.

I totally missed the Mac part....
Alright, u need adb and fastboot for mac.
If you will find newer instructions use it, here is the first thing I found.
Unlock ur device here using fastboot, it clearly written there how to do it.
Find latest twrp recovery in this forum.
Use fastboot again.
"fastboot flash recovery your.recovery.img"
Then, using this recovery u need to flash latest magisc.
I've gave u enough information, with minimum efforts u will be able to find everything u need to do it. Plus u will learn something useful.

the manual looking complicated but it only took 2 hours for me, and if u backup and restore your TA partition, u dont need any drm fix for all firmwares, and dont pay for any useless programs like xperifix(the guy on upper comments always advertise this useless windows program)
for rooting, its very easy on pie
I really appreciate all of y'all's input...but, to be honest, I understand too little of it, at the moment, to feel inclined to dive into executing some of those instructions.
I mean, it looks like I was given enough info to have a chance to root and flash my XZP successfully, but I may just hold off for a bit, maybe return this one and wait until I can either score an XZP that's already been rooted and flashed with the mixed EU/US firmware, or wait until I can afford to get a newer device, which has all of the features I am looking for already working: 4K screen, fingerprint sensor, and preferably being a Sony...if such a device exists now.
