Can I get step by step instructions on how to root? I tried the one click root, but after it does the "adb connecton wll restart log in" or whatevr and then says "wait 15 seconds..." but then it says "error no device found" but it comes up under adb devices...

Ps, I can't search. The app force closes.

I got that too. It was because the drivers didn't install completely. To finish the install, I unplugged the phone which resulted in windows telling me the install was successful. When I plugged it back in, it installed a couple more drivers, and the rooting worked just fine.
It's the drivers. Your best bet is to try it on a WinXP x86 machine.

You don't have to search....you can just go into the Epic 4G development thread and the steps to root is in the stickied threads.

I took the drivers from samsungs website. But I did plug the phone in when I first got it and it installed the drivers by itself back then. So what do I do? Plug it in, let it install, then unplug and plug back in?
Lol

Once you have sdk installed, if you're having trouble connecting your phone to your computer, get "adb wireless" from the market and you can connect that way leaving no need for the usb cable. All you need is your phones wi-fi turned on and a know how of adb.

You have to have a router too. A way that both the computer and phone can connect.

Hey all,
I am attempting to restore Vibrant back to 2.1 in order to try out Samsung's official 2.2. When I go into Download Mode and plug up to the PC, ODIN detects the phone, but it will randomly give the noise where you unplug something from USB, and ODIN will say removed, then almost immediately say my phone is added again. I'm nervous to try flashing at this point because I don't want that to happen while I'm restoring to 2.1.
I'm running Windows 7 x64. Has anyone had this problem?

Reboot the pc and try a different usb port then make sure odin is open before you plug the phone into the pc.

Tried this as well, no different result.
Windows 7 is saying:
USB device not recognized
Device driver was not successfully installed
Unidentified device: (red x) device unplugged
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem: ready to use
I'm currently using Nero v5 with voodoo lagfix disabled
Sounds like you could have something as simple as a bad or fatigued USB port or cable. I've seen this sort of behavior with USB devices before and it's usually from a port connection making poor or intermittent contact. Whether it's a port on your cable (either end), your phone, or the ports on your PC...hard to say...

Yes that was the next thing I did. Same result. Is there an issue with the drivers I'm using because of the ROM I'm running? Do I need different drivers?

That ROM should have no effect on the drivers. Have you tried installing the drivers by updating the kies program? You might have to install the drivers and software first.

Yes sir, Kies is up to date as well, and says unrecognized device (obviously lol).
As an aside, as I keep trying and trying, now windows is telling me a usb device has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.

Yes, I just plugged my ipod in and am using it as normal. I am also able to use the phone in mass storage mode as well. The problem only seems to occur when the phone is plugged in during download mode.
I think your driver is corrupt. You should uninstall kies and the usb driver, reboot, and reinstall. Stupid question, have you tried a battery pull on the phone?

Ok, I will try that now. I have entered download mode with and without the battery. I will let you know in a few minutes after uninstalling kies and the drivers, and reinstalling the drivers.

When you try odin are you:
1. Opening odin.
2. Selecting the pit and tar files.
3. Putting the phone into download mode.
4. Plugging the phone into the PC.
In that order?

I was opening Odin, putting phone into DL mode, plugging it in, and then messing with the files. When I started the thread this morning it would remove / add constantly, and then it went to not detecting my phone at all and giving me the error message (only in DL mode) once I installed and updated Kies. Reinstalling Samsung drivers now, just rebooted.
Just reinstalled drivers and attempted in the order you provided, and windows is still saying that there was a malfunction with the device.
Can you try a different usb cable?
Kies is still installed right?
Can you use a different pc?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes. My sister has the same phone and cable. I'll borrow hers and see if that helps. I appreciate the quick responses, by the way. Thank you very much.
Would the cable only cause it to act up during DL mode and not regular? I can mount normally, etc.
Edit: Odin detects my phone while it's turned on normally. I don't supposed that helps me any.
If there is a bad connection you can have issues.

I never had an issue rooting, someone with more knowledge will reply soon. You cant root if you have update software. You have to go back to older software and do steps before update to keep root.

Do you have any backups, have you tried rerunning the the setup while still connected.
Ask this question in that thread I mentioned, if not might have to chance it.

All you should need are the drivers, put phone in bootloader and then rub the. Bat file from pc. Don't need sdk to perform this, should be automatic.

thanks for the help man, really appreciate it. especially from your phone ahah
Okay, try downloading the file in 1 click root by shabby penguin. Open it and run the PDA setup so you have PDA installed. This should automatically download the drivers you need. Then back out and Go to the 1 click unroot file ( remember to be in bootloader mode) and try to run the .bat again. If not try rebooting or go in to recovery and clear cache and dalvik and try again. Not sure, but trying my best to help.
