How can I turn off my Universal?
When I press the power button it simply goes to sleep.
anyone?
you can turn off the phone, BT, wifi etc and then put it to sleep...
is there no way to turn it off?
I am missing something?
I don't know what you expect it to do. If I switch flight mode on and push the power button then I think that it is switched off. The only other way to completely shut it off, is by removing the battery.
Hope this has helped

Guys, I've tried to make a power off switch app for non-OMAP phones (ie not the Wizard)
Have a look here:

But to answer your question straightforwardly.... No! you can't switch of the Universal as such... there is no hardware Power On/Off option... silly I know
philtech44 - did you try VJEschaton?

Hey, did anyone found solution... is it possible to tweak settings somehow so that display turns on by pushing home button? Or do I really have to push power button every time?
I know of volume button tweak, but.. that one is no good (volume settings gets displayed)... Any other ideas, suggestions? (other than "pull the stylus")
Thanks!
Try AE Button Plus. You can customize a lot of buttons. I didn't tried what you asked, but it worth a try.
Anyway, take care using it.
I would say not. There appears to be no power to these lower buttons while in standby, so no software could work?

No, for the reasons given.
BUT... you could use MobileMagic to toggle the screen on/off when device is turned face down. That way when you turn it face down, screen goes off and buttons are locked. To turn it back on, turn devicedevice face down again.
You do need to go to Start-Settings-System-Power-Advanced and untick the option, "Turn off device if not used for", because if the device gets turned off (instead of just screen off) it won't respond.
I have it set to turn screen off on reverse portrait too,
so it turns off automatically when I put it in my pocket.
Im also afraid for that power button... used it a lot on my diamond so it got bricked, its so gentle... Im using it as much as little possible now on mine HD for that reason.
I have s2u2 unlock on stylus out, so I pull out the stylus, the HD comes on and unlocks. It's so simple.

Do you find this has any impact on battery life? If i'm right, this just turns off the screen but does not put the device to sleep?

That's not possible for the simple reason that the buttons below the screen are part and parcel of the touch screen, so if the screen is off, they won't work.

That is correct.
Power consumption, in this case, depends on what applications are left running. GPS, streaming video, etc would be a bad idea to leave running. But more workday apps use very little juice when the huge power drain of the screen is turned off.

Nope... I've tried that app. Its great for locking down the normal WM hardware buttons, but it doesn't have the HTC bespoke "Home button" on the list of configurable buttons.
Hi, my typical procedure before putting the phone in the pocket is to hold right soft button to lock the screen and to switch off the screen with the power button. I wonder if there is a way to do it at once. You press the power button and screen goes off locked?
Thanks.s.
Install AutolockScreen 1.7 (I'm at work so don't have the cab with me, but if you search this site you'll find it. Install the cab and then go to Start\Settings\System\SmartLock and tick Suspend lock.
LockDevice works well...

Do either of these lock screen apps consume a lot of power?
I understand they have also been created with power saving feaures but what do they run like in a coarse of a day for instance, do they drain the battery quickly?
Thanks.
HD Tweak also has option for autolock when device turned off

It does but it has a problem with the background light not undimming after locking.
Doesn't the phone automatically lock itself when you turn off the screen? Mine seems like it always does.

Mine doesn't do that unfortunately. I am using the app suggested above by ClydeB1 and its working great, not much battery drain either.
Regards.

My phone is set to quite dim anyway in Power settings so this doesn't affect me.......hence why I forgot about it
I've attached the cab which ClydeB1 was talking about, i.e. SmartLock 1.7

What happens if you just turn the screen off with the power button? Does touching send/back/etc turn it back on?

On my device, no. If you turn screen off, only way to turn it on again is with the power button (unless someone rings etc)

Yes, if you just press the power button the screen goes off but it is not locked and although touching the buttons does not turn it back on, if an sms comes in and wakes the device the buttons are then active and could be accidentally touched whilst in your pocket. With the screen locked this does not happen and you need to first unlock the screen to access the sms or the device in general.

Oh ok thanks for the info. Mine does unlock when I get a call/sms but I text a lot so I prefer it to do that, otherwise I'd be wasting a lot of time unlocking it every time I got a message.
Thanks for the hint ClydeB1 and thanks for the cab Fallen Spartan.
I tried SL 1.7 and there are three things, which I do not really like.
1. The phone returns to the very same screen where it was switched off. Some may consider it a pre. I prefer to see the clock when I switch it on.
2. The screen blink once when the phone is switchd on. I find it a bit irritating.
3. I do not see how I can uninstall it.
So, I wonder if you can undim the screen in HD Tweak by touching it or you need to do something extra?
You uninstall it as with any other cab. It's called Chobit Company Smartlock on the list of apps.
If you do use the hd tweak edit, you'll need to push the power button twice I think (it's been a long time since I used it I've forgotten), the first time to activate the screen (you'll see the screen but the backlight will not light up properly) then again to undim and then you can unlock the screen. I think that's the sequence, you'll need to play a little.

The way I had activated the lock was by pressing and keeping pressure on the end call softkey, after a few seconds it vibrates and activates the lock. It comes on automatically when you put the screen off or restart the phone.

Auto-lock screen
I'm running CLEAN ROM (B version) with SPB Mobile Shell.
Considering I don't want any superficial apps installed on my HD, I used HD Tweak and turned autolock on.
To get over the "background light not undimming after locking" problem, I initially unchecked "Automatically adjust backlight" under Settings > System > Power > Backlight and set at 100%. I also set the "Dim backlight on Device" when on battery power to the same time as "Turn off device if not used for". In my case that was 1 minute. I tested and this worked fine.
I then went back in and checked the "Automatically adjust backlight" checkbox.
I also performed the wake up with volume button reg edit making it easier to wake up device.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
"DefaultKeyLock"= 0
UPDATE:
Just tested again and I realised if you wake up device but don't unlock. The screen will automatically dim. Unfortunately if you unlock immediately after, the dim screen issue rears it's ugly head again. The only workaround at this point is to completely disable dim backlight.
.... is broken, no more ,...
Is there a way to assign some other button to do such a function,.. power on/off and stand=by on/off?
Tnx
you can lightly press the reset hole to turn it on and if you are gental enough it will turn it off with out turning it on
i guess i am not gentle enough ;(

Looks like there is no option to select to do sleep on/off.
that's what i actually need.
When phone is off, i can turn it on with reset hole. I don't need to be able to turn off phone. reset is enough.
I only need it to go to and off sleep. Now i am running it always on which is draining battery fast, couple of hours even with brightness lowered to 20%.
plsssss
I did try what brandonledski mention. but looks like it will only turn of screen but not on.
i could make you a shortcut under start menu for the power options as im not sure about being able to map it to another button
How i will turn on screen then ?

AE Button only works when your phone is on, to cold boot your phone you would have to hit the reset button

So i guess ill adjust Phone Alarm setting not to shut off display, leave ON, then do it manually every time i need with AE buttons
EDIT:
Hm,... so i adjusted Phone Alarm not to touch power options,.... AE works for ON/OFF Display, but looks like when its off for some time i cant turn it on any more,.... only if i am switching it off/on one after another
EDIT: Actualy problem was Auto Locking app, as soon as phone is locked i cant ON any more,.... ill try to see if i can add exception in this auto locking app ( its CSDevCtrl APP)
Lock all buttons was an option available for older devices, which should still be available via reg edit (as brandolenski mentioned). I'm gonna try that myself.
AE Button kinda works but battery is draining faaaast.
If i can somehow resume phone from `Shutdown` mode which is set by Phone Alarm (http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html) that would solve problem. This mode i guess put phone in Stand-By (save battery) not only turn off display as in AE Buttons
my screen never turns off and I think that's because of trackball.....how can disable it? thanks

thanks but it's not because of this. after hit thelock button, the screen stops for a second then starts again ... and so without stopping
I would also like to disable the trackball. It has been acting haywire. Makes typing a pain.
