[Q] N1 to Streak : Questions - Streak 5 General

I was considering buying a Streak of late, because my priorities include portable media and web browsing. Being used to large 4.5" and 4" screens on Nokia communicators and then going to the 3.7" screen of the Nexus One isn't exactly the best of pleasures.
For this reason alone I was considering the Streak. I use a lot of push email, watch videos, want a nice vanilla interface and want to browse the web in its full glory like I do on the Nexus One.
There are however a lot of problems I would potentially face that I needed to ask here. Using Android 2.2 is a godsend and I cannot possibly imagine how difficult it would be to go back to 1.6. If there is a way to get the hacks and modifications that I currently have on the N1, it would be fantastic.
Other than that, is there any sort of notification light or LED like the N1 trackball on the Streak? How does the keyboard perform, and can I get rid of the numpad and use the HTC_IME keyboard? Does it have multitouch? Does it have HD video recording like the Nexus One, and a comparable camera?
I am used to having my N1 last me a day of heavy usage, is it the same - or better - with the Streak?
Does the absence of an auxiliary trackball/navigation device like on the N1 hinder your ability to copy-paste and navigate around typed text?
How does it fit in the pocket? Do all applications work as they should? Is the GPS lightning quick (I mean literally, within seconds) to get a fix like on the N1? And finally, will the official Froyo update come soon and bring HD recording?
I'm sorry I couldn't phrase the whole thing better, and have so many questions, but this is a very significant decision for me.
Thanks for any help you guys can give

1.6 is yesterday's news. with some searching you will find 2.2 has been ported and is stable.
no trackball but someone has made an app which lights up the buttons for notifications.
you can use any number of keyboards, i'm on better keyboard myself.
yes it has multitouch.
hd recording capable but i think still buggy in the 2.2 beta.
i've never had a phone with a trackball so i have no basis for comparison but i find touchscreen navigation to be easy.
it's very pocketable as long as you aren't some hipster wearing skin tight jeans.
all my applications work fine.
my gps works fine, that bug was fixed on 2.2 beta.
flash works, i'm getting a quadrant score in the 12-1300's and a linpack ranging from 31-34.
2.2 beta is still in it's infancy but is stable, super fast and only bound to get better.

I sold my N1 for the Streak. Going from 2.2 to 1.6 was painful because of the app selection, but not unbearable. I got impatient and just put O2 2.1 on and love the device. Vanilla 2.2 will go on once it is further along.

texting on nexus?

hey guys, how is texting on the google nexus? is the qwerty touch keyboard tight or is it finger friendly?
Stock keyboard is passable. Some people are okay with it, some aren't. It's not the best, but I could live with it.
Better Keyboard and Smart Keyboard both provide very good alternatives, as does the ported HTC IME. And then there's Swype, which changes the way you type utterly and--if you can get used to it--lets you type as you've never typed before on a soft keyboard: at a ridiculous speed while retaining high accuracy.

I can fly on the stock keyboard in landscape... portrait is a bit tight, but that is to be expected. I wish they had a comma on the main screen, and a few other tweaks, but for me I can just fly!
There are other good options, and of course with time, all of these will get better.
I find the stock keyboard very good - word suggestion and automatic replacement is fantastic.
I think the trick is not to worry about hitting the right keys as the automatic suggestion and replacement takes are of everything.
I use swype... LOVE IT
once you get swype you cant beleive its even possible fantastic
hmm I have the htc touch hd running win 6.5...but I'm considering getting the nexus and selling my hd...do all of you looove ur nexus? lol if you don't mind can you guys state some cons regarding the phone...
Can't find swype in the market...
Swype for Android is currently in beta. Check out this thread for download link for Nexus One and release notes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625910
Swype has not been released publicly yet (not for Android, atleast, other than on the newly released MyTouch 3G), the only way to obtain it is through the leaked apk file, and installing it that way. I believe there is an entire thread about it in the Themes & Apps section (for the N1 Obviously).
how about swype for hd2?

I sold my Touch HD to get the Nexus One and don't regret it one bit.
I've been an avid WM user and the move to Android was a breath of fresh air.
I can't pick out any issues with the device - my advice would be to go for it
wow this is seriously an amazing way to type. at first i was skeptical but wow. you guys should definitely try it out
yea I plan on listing my hd as well and getting the nexus..how much did u sell the hd for..and did u sell it on this forum?
I also sold my HD for the Nexus and have never looked back! The N1 is amazing, fast, fun, etc.
btw, sold my customized HD on ebay a while ago for around $300.
I too am using Swype. I absolutely love it, especially now that it has most of the things I type that aren't in the dictionary learned. And it will be even better when I finally get my antiglare screen protector as well. Sometimes my fingers get a little sticky which slows me down. However, once you get used to it, and your fingers glide smoothly on the screen, it's stupid how quickly and accurately you can type. People in a bar or at school will just look at me and say "what in the hell..." LOL!
I'm very comfortable using the stock android keyboard - gotta admit it took some time adjusting, coming from iPhone and Hero. The HTC IME input method seemed to have a better input prediction and correction so I'm hoping to see the higher res version for Bravo/Incredible ported sometime in the near future!
At the moment I'm going back 'n forth between Smart Keyboard Pro and the stock android keyboard - texting with Smart Keyboard Pro, and inputting passwords/passcodes with stock android keyboard (that warning that Smart Keyboard gave me scared me off using it for inputting passwords/passcodes). I hope Smart Keyboard Pro would allow some theming in future releases.
Better Keyboard is also a nice keyboard replacement app, but I find it does tend to skip some of my keypresses/inputs.
EDIT:
just registered for the beta of Swiftkey @ http://www.swiftkey.net/
The mockup looks good, aesthetically.. hopefully it lives up to its claims
Yea Swype is pretty awesome, I put it on my bfs G1 just for S&G, and he doesnt even use the slide out keyboard anymore
Man had a G1 for a year and then switched to the Nexus 0ne. At first i was stuck on wanting another keyboard phone but i am extremely happy with my N1. Keyboard could be a lil bit better but i am actually quite happy with it. touch accuracy can be a lil off but that is to be expected, i havent seen anything that is a deal breaker. I have used the Iphone OS, and was a MW user since 5.0 till 6.1 and there really isnt any going back for me. I say make the jump!
I find typing on Swype addictive. Never mind the games, this is all I need.
Typing out chunks of Shakespeare on it is stupidly fun.

A couple of questions for Tattoo owners

Hello!
I'm still not sure about the tattoo, but since alot has with the development in the past months I thought I'd ask a couple of questions concerning your current satification kwith the HTC Tatttoo.
1. If you think about the issues that where real in the beginning (a big part of the market was closed for tattoo owners etc), how has these issues changed (perhaps many has disappeared now that you have root/custom roms?
2. Do you regret not buying a phone with a biger screen/higher resoluton? If so, which phone would you have bought instead for around 400 USD / 300 EUR.
3. For those who have tested a 2.1 rom on the Tattoo: Does 2.1 make the phone more responsive and less laggy (if you experienced lag before)? Does it solve any other issues that you had with the device?
4. How long are you planning to stick with the Tattoo before upgrading to another (android) phone?
5. What are your thoughts of the build quality of the device?
6. Would you recommend buying the htc Tattoo today concidering the price range stated in question #2?
Any other thoughts are also welcome=)
Thanx!
1. Still not great. I didn't realise the resolution of the device was going to limit it so much. Plus the camera doesn't have autofocus so barcode scanners dont work among other things.
2. I regret it, but its a free contract phone and im not paying £40 a month for an iphone.
3. not tested but may do soon!
4. Not impressed with android tbh...
5. Feels solid for the money. No complaints.
6. I personally wouldn't recommend it. Its a fun toy but a terrible phone. I think its far to slow. Hopefully this will change with future updates but I would stay away.

1. I've noticed that many apps became available later in the Market after devs added the QVGA tag for them. But it's still something greatly missed.
2. The smaller screen is a slight disadvantage which I was fully aware of when purchasing it, though the 7 home screens kinda make up for it.
3. I will test 2.1 in the weekend. Apparently it is much faster than 1.6.
4. Probably till the end of this year.
5. I'm pleased with the build quality. No issues there.
6. All I can say is weigh the pros and cons and decide for yourself. I bought this just to gain experience with Android.
Thanx alot for your input guys!
Sorry for the long questions, I thought I wouldn't get any answers because of that=)

I'd really like to hear about how you experienced 2.1, and I hope
that it will provide you with a richer experience!
Me and my brother are currently looking at both the HTC Tattoo and the samsung i5700 "spica". Both phones has issues though.
What worries me the most is that the Tattoo might be a bit laggy and that is why I have such hopes in 2.1.
The Tattoo also seems more sturdy than the spica and I'm almost certain that I will accidently drop it some time.
I also like the fact that you can change the cover.
Some follow up questions: For those who has tried phones with a wider color range(?) than Tattoos 65k, spica has ~16 million,
will I really notice that much difference? I saw that the Hero had 65k too and that phone was a huge sucess.
3. Some reviews state that the resolution makes some text look blurred, is this something you have experienced?
How is the screen quaity in general (considering color range is only 65k) and what about video playback?
It's a shame that you can't try the phones in the stores here.
I tried installing 2.1 today, but I got to the Tattoo screen during startup, and then went to a blank screen. Waited for about 10 mins. So recovered the phone, and installing other ROM's now.
PS: I'm in MOD-installing-mood this weekend!

I personally notice the lack of colour depth (coming from touch diamond) but its a payoff to having a phone that will fit comfortably in my pocket (unlike the Hero = chin)
Theres not that much blurriness (imho) but you can notice it. Overall its a good android experince but I will be looking to the desire or legend for my next phone as long as they pass my pocket test!!

So I tried installing it again after wiping my phone, and it installed fine. It's REALLY fast. Nice animations between opening windows. Bluetooth File transfer works after installing the BFT app. It was certainly a richer experience. Despite its current flaws, I'll be using it as my primary OS.

With custom ROMs, the Market is fully available for Tattoo owners. This was the biggest issue I've had, since I'm a big lover of Twidroid and I can mark it as *SOLVED*!

Well, the only real problem I have had is the full-qwerty keyboard in portrait mode. It's just a matter of attitude, though. Having used it for 4 months now, I'm able to write very long text messages in a very short time (even if I mainly twit ), and most of the time I disable the automatical corrector as I write both in Italian and in English. The very first days I was in a real pain, coming from a simple T9 Nokia, I felt the full-qwerty was really uncomfortable, but now everything is changed and I can't live without my full qwerty
So, I don't regret. Anyway, before buying the Tattoo I was taking some several looks at the Hero which should now cost around 300 EUR.

I've never experienced lag with Tattoo but I'm not a big fan of gaming. I mainly use it for music, Google Maps (man, this is amazing!! I was in holiday some days ago with my gf and we were looking for a damn archeological site which was not on our map and not on the road signals, after walking around for about 30 mins I fired up Google Maps, searched for "Archeological Site" and BANG! He got us there, amazing. AFAIK, no GPS software is capable of such a search tool!), Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube and all of those stuff you can do online.
The only way to make the phone very laggy is to use the RadioFM along with the GPS, but it's not a "daily" thing you do I guess.
As for the 2.1 ROM it's amazing. Even if it has not Camera and some stuffs are buggy, it's a GREAT ROM, man it's faster than hell, amazing animations, rewritten Messagging and Google Talk apps which are GREAT, every contact has its own tab which is more than good-looking and.. it's great!

TBH, I'm already planning to change the phone but this has nothing to do with the Tattoo, it's only that I really love the Nexus One and I'm waiting for the summer as it should be available in Italy and I should have enough money But, really, nothing to do with Tattoo, it's perfect for me.

And.. this is a bad point. The plastic in which the stock cover is built it's not perfect. After a couple of months I've had some scratches (not in the display, though) and I'm now buying a new cover.

Yes. If that is your budget and if you don't plan in gaming all day long the Tattoo is definitely a perfect phone for you. As you can see, I'm enthusiastic with it, I use it all day, I tweet, I go to Facebook while I'm on the train, I Google, I maps, I read newspapers, I.. do almost everything. Perfect.
i like my tattoo very much. i paid 60-70 euros for it and since I'm a quad rider I usually wear gloves and the screen let's me handle the phone without taking them off.
if my other phone was ok i would have waited for Nexus to launch.
probably in 2011 i will sell it or when nokia morph is launched... :-??

Hey Sheik - I didnt realise the devs had a rom that was that close to being the finished item - any other probs withthe rom - i.e. all of the widgets and screen sizes ok? 3g or data and wifi ok etc?
Most of the perks, I can live with. Wi-Fi is a little dodgy, but I can partly blame my router for that. Speed and connectivity problems even with the stock ROM. Of all the widgets I have, they work fine. The Music player needs to be worked on as its size exceeds the Tattoo screen both in portrait and landscape mode. My phone doesn't have 3G. I'm still stuck on 2G, and it works just fine.
Thanx everyone for your replys!
Here is an update from me=)
I have had a spica home for testing but I'm sending it back today I did not like the build qualiy, also has less ram than tattoo, and no sense ui). Me and my brother got the spica for the same price as e new htc tattoo (spica was B-grade" though). No more B-grade for me, one of the charger pins was a bit bend and both the charger and the phone was really dusty, the seller assured it was not in "used condition" though.
I can't help but wonder if the Tattoo would have been a better choise=P
As Genargo pointed out, the tattoo seems to handle 2.1 pretty well (while other sources state that samsung spica lags when scrolling through menues and pulling up the menu (even though this is a official 2.1 release).
But our android craving has been put on ice, atleast for the moment.

That sums it up quite nicely, I mean that is is for these kind of moments I want a android phone with me music / gaming and video (divx) is not that important. I guess I see it as a more portable netbook.
Perhaps I should wait and see how android matures, I bet there will be many new models this year. It's amazing how fast android is evolving. Too bad there is no perfect device, I bet there never will be. Another thing that worries me os the dust problem on bothe the HTC hero, Nexus one and the desire (?). Dust underneath the screen would drive me mad=P
Right now there does not seem to be a android phone with a really nice and sturdy buid quality out there. Legends aluminum would scratch too easyli in my opinion and I don't like the cheap feel of the buttons. Hero feels great, too bad that it has the "dust issue"=/

Coming from the backflip?

I was considering heading over to AT&T tomorrow to exchange my backflip for the aria. Im sick of waiting for a root and the 2.1 that was promised. Judging by the CLIQ's progress, its not going to be around for awhile.
What im worried about is the software keyboard, how is it compared to the backflip's software keyboard? Since there's no physical on this thing im worried about typing.
Also, what about speed? I watched a video and it seemed to be flawless, but how does it perform in games? For example doodlejump, is it laggy like the backflip is?
Thanks

The software keyboard takes a little getting used to, but I can type decently with it now, about as fast as on my old tilt since the auto-spell correction helps a lot. The voice dictation function is also pretty accurate.
The UI is very snappy and lag free, even with a ton of animated widgets on the desktop. Scrolling through the application list is very quick and I experience minimal lag when browsing websites. I don't know what doodle jump is, but if it's anything like 'abduction', then it runs perfectly. I actually haven't played a game yet that was laggy.
One thing that IS slow is watching divx/mkv videos with rockplayer. I still haven't figured out why, but I suspect either a lack of hardware acceleration or the hardware simply isn't up to the task of rendering slightly higher resolution divx videos.
Hope that helps.
edit: - to be fair, .mp4 files desynch with audio in rockplayer but run decently in act1, so it's also possible that it's just a software issue.
You won't regret it
I have a Backflip, the AT&T flavor of Google's HTC Nexus One, and now an Aria. I had the poor little Backflip out the other day so I could let it do the OTA update. I had forgotten just how slow and underpowered that thing is. Sure, I loved having an actual physical keyboard, but I absolutely don't miss the "tap and wait" interaction with the Backflip. If you have the chance to get an Aria, do it. It will be a whole new world for you.
Use Swype. Once you get used to that, you'll be like "what keyboard"?
Last sunday I decided to stop by the At&t store to play with the Aria a bit more and ended up leaving the store with one of my own. There are only a few things I miss about the backflip 1. Camera flash 2. flipping the camera forward 3. slightly better speakerphone.
All in all I think the Aria is leaps and bounds a far better phone than the backflip. When I picked up the backflip I was glad it had a hardware qwerty keyboard. Soon I found myself typing on the screen more and more. The original motorola onscreen keyboard is HORRIBLE and within a week of having the backflip I installed the HTC keyboard (HTC_IME.)
The Aria speeds along with out a problem, I'm so happy to be out of that 1.5 cupcake hell! I actually really loved the backflip, but due to it's underpowered hardware and inability to be rooted I gave up. If you have the choice to return the backflip and pick an Aria I say go for it!

hahaha, i used to hate using the tiny keyboard on my Pure, ever since i got swype on it, i didn't mind it at all. though i do miss using a stylist with swype, it helps a lot.
My wife has had hers about three weeks, and her only persistent complaint about it is the speakerphone. HTC really should have spent the extra nickel on a better speaker. Turned up loud enough to hear (in a purse, in a crowd, etc) it's really distorted, so I suspect at some time there will be reports of speaker damage from being too high, etc..
Not that I'm that thrilled about the speaker on my Nexus One coming from a Tilt 2, but oh well..

[Q] Heavily considering Streak, but have some reservations

(This will be long and winded, and I apologize in advance for it)
So, I'm super duper interested in getting the Streak, but I'm trying to be cautious, because I've been burned in the past of buying something to fast without considering future release of products and the product itself. So I've got a few questions.
What I like
First, I will state the features that attract me most. The screen size seems almost perfect. I've been also considering 7 inch slates, but I keep coming back to the streak for 2 reasons. 7 inches isn't pocketable, and so far none of the 7 inchers have phone capabilities, meaning I would have two devices I would have to carry. The pocketability actually is the more attractive to me, as I would want to carry this thing everywhere with me (work, parties, travel).
I know Archos is coming out with a 5 inch slate, but they don't have the market available, though I also realize that more than likely you can get it added with a simple .pkg or .apk or whatever they are called. But then the 2 vs 1 device argument comes into play there.
Worries
1. My concerns I guess are, has anyone heard any news of any 5 inch size phones coming out in the near future (within the next 6 months)?
2. if I root and put Froyo on my Streak, I think I can go back to stock and add the official releases when they come out, correct? I'm not sure how complete the 2.2 release is, does everything now work? Camera, GPS, wifi. What about using the O2 2.1 release?
3. The main thing I will be using my device for will be movies/comics/general media consumption. I've heard of Rockplayer, it seems to do all major video formats from I can tell, but does it play well with the Dell Streak? What would be encoding limits?
Sorry if many of these questions have been asked and answered, I've become a bit confused moving around all over the forum.

I think your worries can be put to rest.
1) I'm not aware of any phones in the 5" game coming, but no doubt there will be. Its probably a ways out though.
2) If you are saavy enough you should have little problem tweaking your Streak. I think most people find 1.6 good for your media consumption, save for flash.
3) The Streak is awesome for media consumption... I think you are exactly right in your assessment of the 5" vs 7"...
Do it!

1. I've not heard of ANY 5" phones coming out at all. 4.3" is about as close as most phones get to the Streak.
2. I'm running 2.2 on my Streak at the moment and 99% of things are ok. The only little bugs I've found are WiFi can be a little temperamental when turning it on and off, the camera sometimes crashes and screenshots through DroCap come out red.
3. I can't really comment on RockPlayer as I've barely used it myself, sorry!
I love my Streak and I don't think you'll regret it if it's 5" you've set your heart on.
Hi,
The streak is a great phone.
Answers.....
1. Ask most streakers and they won't go back to small screen
2. Yes you can. Just done it myself. Everything works apart from camera. Everything is better apart from battery.
3. Media is what it does best...well sorta. Screen size is made for it. Used to use rockplayer but I then moved to arc media player. Not perfect but plays most formats from flv to avi
If you want a great phone with large screen the streak is the only one that pushes the limits

Sounds like the camera in 2.2 is a random works or doesn't work? Eh, I could probably do with 2.1 until then, I use my camera fairly often right now.

It didn't work for me on 2.2 until I did the (very easy) build.prop mod from the Streak Froyo thread.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Currently ditched my FUZE for the iPhone 3GS and while the 3GS is, to me, much better than the FUZE... I'm bored of Apple. I'm looking for an Android device and I've narrowed it down to the Streak and the Desire.
My reasons for worrying in regards to the Streak are with device lifespan/OS updates. Sure, it comes with 1.6 now and Dell has pormised 2.1 before the end of the year, but what after that? Will the Streak see 3.0 or will Dell switch their focus to the Thunder (or whatever else is coming down the pipeline)?

If you're down for hacking new ROMs on there...well...there are still people perfectly happy with their G1

I did enjoy flashing my FUZE so I may be ok with the Streak then...
One thing I think I should point out though, the Streak isn't as pocketable or handheld as a 4.3 inch device. Sure the thing fits in your pocket, but there are numerous reports of the lcd screen cracking underneath the glass as a result from pant stress. I personally use an external holster which works fine, but it isn't exactly pocketable by that metric.
Second, you have to handle the phone more carefully because of its extra bulk. You can't exactly handle it one-handed and maintain a sure grip on it. This creates a bit of jostle anxiety; I tend to cradle it wit both my hands defensively or refrain from using it altogeter if I am not sitting down in a stable environment.
Mostly I am highly paranoid of dropping it, because with Dell not offering repairs for the Streak, that would be 600 dollars out the window.
But aside from that, I couldn't be happier with this phone.

hmmm that is slightly worrisome Gilrad. My first PDA (a Handspring IIIe or something like that) had that fate happen to it in my pocket. Maybe I should contact my insurance carrier to find out about this.

has anyone used this insurance?
As long as you get a decent holster I don't think there should be any problems, I certainly haven't had any with my easecase. I mostly wanted to point out that 5.5 inches crosses that boundary where you can treat it like a normal cellphone.

I find it ok size wise.
It lives in my back pocket and has been dropped a few times and its still fine. I think its about a rugged as a 5" screen could be unless its cased.
I'm running the 2.2 build 1 (or 0.2) and the battery life is looking good so far - especially with juice defender - even on the first 2.2 build with light use and juice defender installed I ran for 23 hours with 37% still left.
I think the new build should improve its battery performance with heavy use.
The only bugs so far that I have experienced is the camcorder not recording in 720p and the inbuilt wireless tether doesn't work - but there is one that does. Also some things don't appear in the market as it thinks its a nexus.
I would recommend trying the 2.2 build instead of the stock 1.6 - its like a different phone - much faster and smoother and flash support really makes it great for watching stuff on the web.
It took me a few days to get used to its size, now I wouldn't go any smaller as the screen is brilliant for watching films and playing games and surfing.
I wouldn't go any larger either as it wouldn't fit in my pocket.
After reading everyones responses and also finding that insurance plan, which after a coupon code I found (tenoff) a 2 year plan is about $112, I am completely ready to make the plunge! I'm really excited today!!!!
Dropped my streak earlier today. What can I tell? still works good and fat even with all cracked screen but oh my I wish I didn't drop it

[Q] Dell Streak on Android 2.2 Froyo

Hi all!
Merry X'mas!
I'm contemplating the purchase of Dell Streak with the updated Froyo. Wasn't really sure if I should get it. Am also looking at HTC Desire and LG Optimus 7.
Dell Streak looks really good to me. But I'm worried about the size of the handset. It is good for web browsing etc but not sure if it's portable (cos I can't try putting the demo set into my pocket as it's locked to the display counter). And most reviews online are based on Android 1.6.
Could I seek opinions/advice from current users of the device, please? Is the device easily portable in the pocket (small size guy Asian jeans, pants)? How does it compare to HTC Desire? I heard that Dell Streak can't load the names of contacts when u use the dialing pad, is that true? Any other comments about the phone too?
Many thanks in advance!
Regards,
Anderson
It is true, when you dial #'s, the names containing those letters so not appear onscreen.

Thanks for the info!
Can I also wifi-tether using Dell Streak as a modem for my laptop? Sorry, I'm new to Android OS, not sure if wifi-tethering is based on OS or hardware. Have only used Windows Mobile and Symbian OS.
Yes you can tether with it but you will need the Unlocked version in the states as AT&T will surely remove it from the official 2.2 once its released on the locked units. On the unlocked phones its on there by default.
As far as fitting in pockets yes it is a big phone and might be a little awkward when you sit down but standing up or walking around it is no problem. I have had a iPhone, and a Nexus One, have used a Droid, Captivate, and others....I like the the streak the best.

I bought my Streak yesterday. And interestingly, its my first Android device too. It came preloaded with 1.6 however immediately got updated to 2.2 (absolutely easily) upon switching on, with SIM inside (FOTA)!!!
Well, size is a matter of personal opinion. Of course, you can not put this in your shirt pocket. The device is Beauty outside, and brains inside.
All is well with device, in terms of speed, stability, user interface, battery life and almost unlimited apps, however If you have been a winmo user all this while you MUST NOTE that unlike Activesync, here you DO NOT HAVE any GOOD SYNC option, which can SYNCHRONIZE your OUTLOOK- CONTACTS, TASKS, CALENDAR, NOTES and MAILS. However if this does not bother you, primarily I feel, Streak should be a good experience!!!
Hi Ron,
I see! I'm in Asia, seems like the telcos here don't lock the phones so the tethering function should be in there! Looks like the phone is portable!
Hi Ravi, looks like you are enjoiying your phone! I'm not too bothered about active-sync cos I am currently using Nokia E63 on Symbian. Nothing much for me to sync with my laptop cos would be using the SIM card for contacts.
How long does the battery last?

No bro, I am not really enjoying my Streak and it is ONLY because of its issue of OUTLOOK synchronization which is an absolute must for me from my business point of view.
The battery life of course depends on so many parameters, including drainers like Wifi/Bluetooth/GPRS (3G), playing music/video/camera / phone calls/ screen brightness etc. However I can say that I am on 3G (switched on) ever since I switched on the phone, using wifi for about 30 min, in last 24 hours and no other major drainer, except few phone calls, however fiddling a lot with the device which means the screen has been on-- a lot, and I have not charged my phone, ever since I switched it on for the first time, ever-since I bought it that is now over 42 hours (of course I fully charged it, before first usage itself) and as I can see, i have more than 60% battery life still remaining. This is really good, for sure!!!
Hey Bro! That's a great battery life! My normal usage would comprise of 1-2hrs of web surfing and IM over 3G network, 10-20mins of talk, perhaps 50 SMS per day.
Have you tried taking photos and videos with the phone? Good quality?
I just got a dell streak today at best buy, so mine is the AT&T locked @ 1.6. Idk when exactly the 2.2 will come out for mine, but honestly for $99, I dont care.
I'm gonna give a little review of it based on my one day of ownership:
I've been an owner of iphone 3gs, nexus one, HD2, and still have my EVO 4G. Aside from 1.6, I'm really digging this phone.
the cons:
*the speaker phone is fine during calls, but cracks when I have the music on full blast (but not a deal breaker).
*the keyboard isn't that great for a phone this size, but there's a lot of keyboards out there in the market, so this isnt really a problem.
*camera is sub par to all of my previous phones (not a deal breaker)
*some may disagree with me, but HTC's Sense UI is better than Dell's Stage UI
*Other gripes are firmware-related, so once I'm able to update to froyo, it should be all good.
Pros:
*The battery seems to be better than my N1, HD2, and EVO, but I'm not sure if the firmware has anything to do with this.
*the screen is only .7 inches bigger than my HD and EVO, but its a HUGE difference. it truly is more enjoying to browse and watch movies with a bigger screen.
(keep in mind that on the 4.3 in screens, I can operate it with one hand, but this phone was designed to be used in landscape mode, so you really need two hands to operate it. feels like i'm holding a psp. kind of weird, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.)
*despite the huge size, the form factor of the streak feels good in the hand(s). Its unbelievably slim and sleek. not too heavy, but not too light where it feels flimsy.
*wow factor. immediately after I left the store my friends and family saw it and they were like, "DAYYYYUMMM!" Phone envy
Because its only dealt through few retailers, the streak is a rare gem.
*contrary to other reviews I've read online, the snapdragon processor has been very smooth so far and not spotty at all.
Overall, my main issues are with the 1.6 firmware which will all go away with 2.2 (I have froyo on my EVO, so I'm sure it'll be just as great if not better on the streak). The hardware (besides the lack of a 4G radio) is perhaps the sexiest.
My biggest concerns however, are the actual quality that the gorilla glass are reported to have, and the support that dell comes through with for the streak (pushed back release date/froyo update).
p.s. I forgot to mention, this phone should fit in your front jean pocket fine. but I wear a lot of gym shorts and track jackets that have wide pockets. because the streak is so long, its more likely to drop out of your pockets than other phones. this has happened to me already, but fortunately it only received a very tiny and hardly noticeable blemish.
Stage ui is horrible I just use launcher pro. The keyboard gets a nice upgrade with froyo as swype is bundled in. the camera is okay, just wish the hd video was better.

Hi Ray, thanks for the first hand comments and comparions on the Dell Streak. I had a go with the demo set in store, I think the Sense UI does looks nicer than the stage UI. And I'm kinda worried about the support as shipment was delayed once to the telco here. Do tell me more about the phone as you use it!
Is there any apps to load contacts' names while keying on the dial pad?
Hi Spectre, will go check out launcher pro! Sounds cool! Saw it appear a few times at the other threads!

Setting up Outlook sync is trivial with android device, just sync directly with exchange server; set it up accordingly, similar as setting up exchange activesync in winmo handset; and rather than sync with PC. Like in winmo platform works as push based as well...
