I'm looking to upgrade from my dream to the hero.
The phone from Sprint is 180 w/ contract.
I want to get the phone and unlock it.
Does anyone know how much the phone Withought the contract is?
Thanks in advance
Sprint is a CDMA network. It doesn't use SIM card, and the user data is stored on the phone. You cannot use it on other networks.
So getting it without contract is just... without contract. You need to be on Sprint's network for it to work.
well looks like im switching to sprint lol
sorry for my ignorance

Ummmm.... JUst cause it's a CDMA network, doesn't limit it to Sprint. It can be unlocked & flased to Metro PCS, US Cellular, Page Plus, Virgin, Verizion and numerous other local or regional CDMA networks. Just need to have the know-how.
$599
Bestbuy`s going to charge $599 to buy it out right. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9509784&type=product&id=1218120547637

Theoretically you can swap the radio chip inside and add a sim card slot too add GSM support too. I don't want to waste time arguing with you on that, but if you do know how to unlock a Sprint CDMA phone to use on Verizon yourself, congrats, you can make big bucks with that knowledge.
BTW, to those who are considering getting onto Sprint for the Hero, note that Sprint's network cannot do voice and data simultaneously, so if you are downloading stuff, you won't be able to receive. It's like the GPRS problem on GSM network, it's just that current Sprint network faces that problem even on 3G.

that's not true, if you are downloading something and someone calls the download stops and the call is recieved. atleast that is how it has worked with my touch pro, vogue, and titan.

Yah I'm just going to add a line, cancel my current line with the Palm Pre and good enough. Gotta love Google Voice.
Figure I can maybe sell my Pre for the cost of the ETF. Although there isn't much demand for them for obvious reasons.

As I understand, CDMA networks need to register the ESN of your device to their network, but most CDMA networks (at least Sprint and Verizon) no longer allow the registration of ESNs that were originally registered to other networks. Apparently Verizon used to allow 3rd party ESNs, but no longer do this, but I cannot find any "official" confirmation of this.
i.e. if you have a Sprint phone, it will have a Sprint ESN and Verizon would refuse to add this to their database.
I believe there are methods to clone another ESN onto a new phone, but I've no idea how "legal" this is.
Regards,
Dave

I never made mention of the legalities of the process.... I was just stating that it can be done. I do it for Metro phones all the time. I also "heard" it is possible to unlock unlimited data for smartphones on Metro as well.....

A lot of people don't care about that, so stop trying to pee on Sprint and claim it's raining. Geez... If i'm Youtube(ing) and a call comes in, fine, i take the call, finish the call and then continue what i was doing.

This is BestBuy's modus operandi..which is charging more (lots more) than even Sprint's MSRP. So if one is considering buying at full price without contact, go to Sprint directly. The flip side is that they usually have better new/upgrade-contract prices than Sprint since BestBuy doesn't do mail-in-rebates, they make it instant.
Some folks on spintusers.com are claiming $429.99 Sprint full price.

Yes, Sprint is charging $429.99 full retail. At least according to their own website.
http://www.sprint.com/hero (read the fine print)
And why the F is Best Buy charging so damn much??!! That is just rediculous! Doesn't best buy do price matching?? Couldn't I go into a store and say hey, sprint is only charging 429.99, hook me up?
.........$429.99.........
Free, with a catch
(I know this is a shameless plug, however)
Today - Sprint made three announcements around support for the Android Platform.

Soon it's time for me to get a phone upgrade for one of the two HTC vogues on my contract, so Bell called me and asked me if I thought about it and I told them I was putting the upgrade credit towards an iPhone. They told me I need to upgrade my plan to a data plan. I told them I had a smartphone already and they said the HTC Touch was designed to look and act like a smartphone but Bell doesn't count it as a smartphone
Now to get my a new phone I have to be on atleast a 500mb a month data plan. 500MB a month?! I don't know but I think I would use that in like a day. I use the internet on my phone quite a bit, I use the last.fm app and push email is on 24/7. To make things worse I can't check how much transfer I use a month now, because Bell's data checker is wrong, it says I only use 15mb, when I've downloaded files larger than 50mb on my phone.
I have no idea what to do
Well,
If you like what your phone does. Why not keep it. You can use the latest WinMo builds on it. I don't know. Just my thoughts.
Don't change it. Data charges will go through the roof.
I'm torn, because the htc dream I'm looking at has tons of nice features, but I don't know how fast I would consume 500mb.
Then i suggest going with the dream but disabling the "cellular network data connection". That way you'll be able to use calendar, email and such (yay for cache-ing data!)... but not google maps. That f'in sucks, i know.
well if there data counter s wrong then get the 500mb plan they will only say you used like 40mb right lol. j/k
it seems you are in a situation.....
Download a data monitoring program. Look at what you use after a month and decide if 500mb will suffice.

That is a brilliant suggestion, but unfortunately the 2 I tried netcounter and rocket data aren't compatible with my vogue
I'm not sure what to do, really! I would LOVE to have a larger screen and hardware keyboard, but if I need more than 500mb, well, I need more than 500mb. Ah!

Wait - Bell has the HTC Dream??
Ok checked their site mid post and they do not have the HTC dream...
Also for the HTC Vogue - the reason it isn't considered a PDA by Bell (from what I've heard) is more marketing than anything. The wanted to release a PDA with cheap data to get customers in contracts during the just-pre-ipone era.
I am on Bell and got my Touch on release day. Bell does consider it a smart phone. However, they allow a customer with a Touch to add the Unlimited Mobile Browser which is normally limited to dumbphones with WAP browsers only.
The reason they did this was because Rogers was releasing the iPhone a few days after the Touch release( in Canada ). The Touch, being the closest thing to an iPhone hardware wise at the time ( all screen, no keyboard ). Bell decided to sell the Touch for cheap AND give it a VERY cheap unlimited data plan. 5$. Yes, unlimited data on the Vogue with Bell was 5 $. and it worked. The Touch was sold out all over the place here and there are many, many Bell Touch owners because of this.
It has since been raised to $7 and $10 data plans, depending if you're on contract or not. This was a one time shot and in the 2 years since Bell has done this, they have never done it again with any other smart device.
So, if you get rid of the vogue, you have to go to their new absurd data plans. IMO stick with your vogue, it is still the best phone that BEll carries with a 7$ Unlimited Data Plan; you can't beat that.
Also, in reagrds to the incorrect data usage displaying on your bill; Bell caps each data session at 0.0391MB. So even if you DL 100mb file, it sill still only show 0.0391MB for that session. Why? I don't know, but I'm sure someone much smarter then me can tell you why carriers do this. If you want to track your data usage, use SPB Wireless Monitor as it does work on the Touch.
EDIT: These are the devices that Bell carries that allow the 5, 7 and 10 dollar unlimited data plans.

No, I got the device from ebay
There is no actual data limit per session or a "maximum session rule". It's just how its recorded by the system and displayed backto you. Even if you call TCARE or text TCARE it will show this deflated value. Session is when your phone dials #777 to connect to data. Under WinMo you can see this by clicking on your data icon on the status bar. It will show you that you're connected and the current session time. Now, don't be fooled thinking that the system does not fully register your total usage and expect to get away with tehering etc ( on a non safe ROM ) cause you will indeed be billed for actual usage.

If you are asking will just background data and emails and casually surfing the net eat up 500mb, then no not even close.
But if your a "power user" and your downloading MP3's watching youtube and streaming lastfm, then yes you will definitely go over.
As well the original reason for the Vogue to be non smartphone was because it did not have a keyboard. The Vogue was the first phone in NA (I believe) to be an entirely touch interface with no physical keyboard/dialpad. It was this reasoning that they did not believe it to be a true smart phone, and honestly given one WinMo 6.0 they were pretty much right lol
The iPhone was not available until July 11 2008 from Rogers, the touch has been out since July 2007 and was released to Bell sometime in the fall of 2007.

As far as I know, Bell now has a full GSM network... no extra config should be needed to get a GPRS/EGDE/HSPA connection... should just work outta the box with a Bell SIM card

Bell does have a new network, however it is not GSM. It does however use sim cards. The new network is HSPA+/UMTS and only supports dual band of 850/1900. This is different then the GSM/GPRS/EDGE Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and any devices that use these bands will not work on the new Telus and Bell network.
Example:
A GSM (850/1900 MHz) device will not work on Bell/Telus
A HSPA/UMTS (850/1900 MHz) will work on Bell/Telus.
The NA version of the HTC Dream that rogers carries happens to support HSDPA/UMTS dual-band (850/1900 MHZ) and will work on Bell and Telus' new network. However, popping a bell sim card into a Rogers HTC dream will not make it work. You will need to have the device unlocked and then you will need to contact Bell and give them the ESN to activate on your account, or do it online though your account services. Bell will unlock a device for you for a $75 charge. I suggest doing it yourself for free by looking up how to get your unlock code and how to unlock your device, in the usual places.

True, except tha dream "and any GSM only device" uses an IMEI number not ESN.. "besides phones like tha touch pro2 for telus witch has an ESN & IMEI as it suppots CDMA & GSM" im shure bell wouldnt need tha IMEI or even be able use it for that matter as they can not have every IMEI in there data base, only with one of there devices would you be able to register tha IMEI on your account.. allthough like skydirt said if its unlocked and support NA HSPA bands it should work.. most new devices may auto configure your carrier settings (for data) but you may need to get settings from bell for some phones to work - at least that how it works with rogers/fido "were i am a beloved customer service Rep"
PS: im in tha same boat as tha creator of this thread and it sucks! im kicking my own ass for not upgrading my phone wen they still offered unlimited data, sms, calldisplay, voicemail etc for $45 a month.. i no i would go well over even with 1GB on any other device... i did put tha wife on tha $45 unlimited plan while it was still offered though,,, now if i can just get her to switch accounts with me lol i have herd bell will allow you to keep old data plans switching to there HSPA network? ?
Hey folks, let me preface this with:
I am relatively a noob to hacking the G1, but I have installed Cyanogen's latest, and I know how to do basic hacks.
So what I was wondering, with all the hubub about 4g, and the big networks offering 3g/4g for laptops via one of their little USB dongles, could the G1 be configured to use the 3g/4g data signal from Comcast?
It would be cool, as I already pay for comcast, and the service might even be better. Best of all I can drop the data plan on my TMo service and save cash.
What do you think?
Thanks!-- BTW love the forum... thanks for all you folks do!
Comcasts' 4G is actually WiMax, which isn't compatible with any current Android device. Sprint is supposed to launch a WiMax Android device soon, which should be compatible.
Comcasts 3G is piggybacking off of Sprint's CDMA network. Which means it *might* be possible to use it with the Sprint CDMA HTC Hero, but honestly, your best bet is to contact Comcast and ask them, because they might lock their service down to only authorized devices.
I recently received my Focus all the way from the US of A (currently stationed in Australia). I managed to unlock it without any trouble.

I suspect the AT&T apps are US specific. If someone could write a brief description & whether the apps are any good, that would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I may as well delete them.
AT & T Family Map
AT&T myWireless
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Radio
AT&T U-verse Mobile

Navigator - a paid (monthly) navigation software.
Radio - let you listen to AT&T streaming radio.
U-verse - let you access your AT&T U-verse cable programming if you're an AT&T U-verse customer.
None of these are useful outside US or even inside US. It is commonly refer to as bloat ware that carriers want to make a few quick bucks from you.

Never tried it (most of these apps automatically sign you in with a monthly contract if you launch it).
According to AT&T site, it is another subscription service that can track your family members' location (their phone location) if they are on your family plan.

Here's a list of some of the best sports apps
http://lifehacker.com/#!5782923/the-best-sports-apps-for-android
I use scorecenter. It's got all the scores and a crawl on the bottom for news, I've never used their mobile alerts.
From their site:
"Why wait to catch the score? Sign up for *FREE ESPN Alerts and get the latest scores, breaking news, and ESPN Fantasy updates sent to your phone. Sign up is easy, you choose the Alerts you want to receive. It's *FREE, and it works on any mobile device that can receive text messages." I guess they should update that to say "except Sprint". I'm sure it's a money thing, I'm sure ESPN is probably pissed at Sprint or wants a bunch of money from them.
I liked receiving texts alerts without opening an app...
I'm testing buzzbox right now, going to see how that works.

Update: And just like that, we get a tip about what's really going on. Here 'tis:
It's not a "money thing" in the traditional sense. They didn't give us a real clear picture of what's going on, but ESPN offers these messages free of charge to ESPN.com members, and Sprint is going to start charging their customers for each individual text message, regardless of having an unlimited messaging package. ESPN really isn't going to put up with it being "free," yet not free.
This stinks. ESPN alerts were nice because they gave you the scoring plays. If I choose alerts for the Yankees and A-Rod hits a 2 run homer, it will show he hit a 2 run homer and R.Cano scores, the same with football alerts.
I have already paid my membership but will not be re-subscribing to espn insider or doing any espn fantasy leagues.
There are other alerts out there, I will just have to search for something else. It stinks, these are FREE apps (I pay for espn's extra services and in my mind pay sprint for extra premium $10 fee).
It seems like things are continuing to get worse at Sprint - I lost premier status upgrade, I lost espn alerts, who knows what will happen with the network (if they will go LTE or Wimax). Every time I try to use my mlb at ball app to listen to the game, the game keeps cutting out every 10-15 seconds and network speeds seem to be getting slower and slower.

According to this article, Sprint is charging the content providers, i.e. ESPN, Yahoo, etc. more per message sent. They aren't doing anything to the individual users.
