How to check for lag fix? - Vibrant General

I bought my phone from a guy off craigslist, and am not sure if he applied any of the fixes (I have never had any problems with lag since owning the phone).
I don't want to jack up my phone with an update, so how can I check to see whether any of the lag fixes have been applied?

You could download Quadrant from the market and run it, if you score over 900 there has probably been a lag fix applied. Also look in your app tray for any applications that may be a one click lag fix application. Also check the size of your available application memory.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I don't have any applications that apply the lag fix, as I did a factory reset when I first got the phone.
What should I look for as far as the size application memory?

Before you buy a phone off eBay/CL, always sell the seller to reset it to stock factory condition before giving it to you. That will save you the trouble of soft/hard bricking a phone after assuming they did that.

Go to the Market and download Android System Info
Open it up to the System tab
Click on Mount Points (at the very bottom)
Look at /system, /cache, /dbdata, and /data
If you see "rfs" under all four, no lagfix is applied. If you see "jfs" or "ext4" then you have a lagfix.

HTC Mogul memory decrease over the course of a day

What is up with the memory drain on this device. I'll start the day with 24mb of memory (soft reset) and only have 10mb or less at the end of the day with no apps but activesync running. Has anyone less notice this?

Yea I get the same problem. Except I start off with about 20 and end up with as low as 9 before i'm forced to soft reset.
Its the magic of the Mogul's memory leak. The old rom and new rom feature it so untill a new update comes out, were stuck with it.
Does the Hermes and Kaiser have the same issue? They seem to be similar. They other thing is that the WM6 is suppose to have made those apps that leak in previous versions run at the kernel level.
my titan doesnt have the issue. its an app you've got installed. hard reset and dont install anything, you wont have the problem. troubleshooting 101. dont blame the titan.
I posted this on another forum discussing this problem, so I'll just quote myself here:
The memory "leak" thing is nothing more than a cache "optimization" in place to make the device respond snappier.
Whether it succeeds or not is another story altogether...
Basically, like any cache, it stores recent calculations for faster response later. For example, if you open and close IE alot, you might notice that the first time you open it on a fresh restart takes a little bit longer than the next times- that's because the second time you start it up, parts of it are still in memory from the first time!
You might be wondering why this happens even after forcing it closed with Xbutton or the memory settings. That's because the info stored in the performance cache aren't directly related to any one program! Many apps can use the same routines and calculations, and therefore this process exists on a processor/file system layer as opposed to a software layer, and therefore also exists even when all programs are closed!
Meaning, if I have mapopolis that uses a certain routine to access my BT GPS receiver, even after I close it, some of that routine stays in memory because perhaps Google Maps will use the same routine, and therefore respond faster!
Now, ideally, this should speed up performance, and it SHOULD disappear on its own if the memory is needed and the information goes "stale" (hasn't been processed in a while = not really needed for optimized perfomance). However, one look at the way Microsoft handles "automatically closing apps" (native X button, anyone?) is enough to know that WM can't manage its own memory very well.
I can, however, vouch for the fact that the longer you leave all programs closed, the more of your memory starts to creep back into available. I've sat and watched this happen. So, it sort of works, but perhaps not well enough if people are having low memory system crash problems.
Now, before you all start blaming MS for this... Its not Microsoft's problem. They developed CE-5 (which WM6 is based on) on machines limited to 32MB to make sure the programmers didn't get lazy with OS bloat.
Its the manufacturers who add all this file system optimization and stuff to their final device. In this case, its the way HTC thinks the system should run, which is why this anomaly is NOT as apparent on, say, a WM Treo device.
The good news is that if we complain enough, HTC might realize this optimization does more bad than good, and leave it out on the next ROM update for us.
However, truth be told, I think it works. The Mogul is one of the snappiest PPC's I've used of late, although I can't say for sure if its because of the cache or not.
This is just my personal opinion, so don't flog me! I just don't look at the memory useage anymore unless I'm having a problem, which mind you, I hardly do.
My most recent observations were this:
Soft reset gives me ~21MB (got some htc plugins), and after a day of use, making sure to close everything after I'm done, I get 18-19MB. At lowest, I hit 10MB after closing alot of apps. This memory usually comes back to 18-19mb in a matter of time for me. If for some strange reason it doesn't (can't say how often this happens), I soft reset.
All in all, I'm happy with the Mogul.

I wasn't blaming the Titan directly, although I wish they would allow you to adjust the memory like they have in the past. But as I've read that may having something to do with chipset of battery consumption.
I was just wondering if others had the same issue and might know of the reason.
Is there a list of known apps that cause memory 'drain' or don't clear their cache. I can understand apps caching data into memory to run faster, but they are not cleaning themselves out upon exit. The strange thing is how they continue to grow over the course of the day with no interaction.
I'm doing a hard reset to see if it get better. Add apps one at a time until I find an issue.
Ok did a hard reset. Setup Outlook to get my mail from Exchange and Gmail. Let it get synced and then did a soft reset. Started with 24mb after reset, down to 21mb without doing anything after an hour and it's still falling. The only thing running is ActiveSync. I've also removed htc_cm_guardain and ssdaemon from the startup. The only thing in startup is poutlook.
The thing I noticed when I had handyswitcher installed (before hard reset) was that filesys, device, gwes, services, shell and cprog all continously increased there memory consumption over the course of a few hours and never stopped or released it.

No no no... the reason you used to be able to select storage vs RAM was because it was SHARED memory! It was actually all RAM. If you had a 64MB device, that 64mb was split between ram and storage, and just like the rest of your RAM, it would wipe out when the battery died!
Ever since WM5 came along, they stopped sharing the memory, and now have dedicated RAM and Storage (using the leftover space on the EPROM chips used for the ROM image), much like a computer. This is a much better solution since you don't sacrifice your RAM for storing some large files, and you don't have to worry about battery failure cleaning you out!
Also, its not the apps that have cache, its the file system. The file system WILL actually free up some of that memory as the device is left with all apps closed for a while (maybe not all of it, but I've watched my device go from 11mb free after closing stuff to 18-19mb).
You guys need to hit the easy button on this one! It may not be a permanent fix, but there's a small freeware called Oxios Hibernate that releases RAM. I just put it on my start menu and 2 clicks....I have free RAM. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.
bam, thanks for the info... that little app rocks.
use a file explorer and go to \Windows\Startup. There is a shortcut there for a program along the lines of HTC_Guardian_cmsomething. This app is a htc app used to enforce sprint settings and runs in the background. So long as you don't destroy your phone internet settings you can just remove the shortcut. I found all my memory leak issues have gone away. I don't have any leaks when using the kaiser tab plugin.
Yes I've removed the links for HTC_Guardian and SSDaemon from startup and added them to my settings folder (if I ever need them). I soft reset to around 25mb and the Oxios Hibernate app keeps me around 24.5mb.
what does SDdaemon do?
sddaemon is suppose to be the speed dial or voice command app you get when you hit the button on the left side with the talk bubble. It loads the app if you hit the button, so I'm not sure why they have it in startup.
On my old Treo 700W, which REALLY had a memory problem, I used Oxios hibernate all the time. It works quite well.
yes, it works.

you know what might help...if windows mobile had some sorta sorta disk caching feature...
that's what is causing the memory leak.

[Q] Where's My Phone Memory Gone?

Like a lot of people, I would imagine, I have a constant battle to try and fit all of the apps that I want on my phone memory. There are a whole heap of apps already that I would like that I have had to delete already.
My phone memory was down to 2MB and I really want to add Skype to it now that has been launched. Knowing that I would never fit it on unless I deleted something, I decided to remove my greediest app, Documents to Go, which is also around 8.5MB - the same as Skype.
I deleted it, checked how much memory I had left, expecting there to now be 10.5MB, but found that it is still telling me that I only have 2MB left.
I have tried everything to try and find where the missing memory has gone - the app has definitely been removed from my phone.
Any ideas why I still don't have more than 2MB of memory after this?
Wipe cache.
Try to delete cache of all applications and then reboot the phone
I have gone through the caches of all of the apps that I can access and cleared them. This brings it up to 4MB, but it is still far short of the 8.5MB that I thought that I would have gained by deleting Documents to Go (which I never got around to using anyway).
I guess I really should wipe the thing and start again after downloading and deleting so many apps, but it will be a major pain to set everything up the way I like it.
Roll on Froyo when I can download apps onto the SD card, which should solve the problem once and for all.

No, it's not rooted. I looked at the process of rooting and it looks terrifying and complicated!
If it was rooted, then I know I could just install apps onto the SD card and then the problem would be solved immediately.
If Froyo doesn't get released for Legend soon though, I think I will have to try and root it though as this memory problem is really starting to drive me insane.

OCLF harder to get rid of than herpes!

I just can't seem to uninstall Ryan's one click lag fix. The options are not available. When I clicked on undo lag fix it says "you have only 289MB free on RFS, but 386MB used on EXT2. You must free up some space."
How do I free up this space???
im having the same problem lol any help with this would be appreciated.
Uninstall apps?

Let what run exactly?
What a doing coincidence, I've been dealing with this very issue today.
I got the same message so I started deleting a bunch of superfluous stuff (gameloft games--holy cow those are big installs). Put in a fresh battery (can't do oclf with less than 40% battery) and clicked to remove the lag fix.
The thing ran for about 9 minutes and then gave me a very scary error message that it could not rename some data, that something had gone wrong and that it could be "very bad." Yeah. I then got a notification that I was very low on app memory. Checked free space on OCLF and got 1.8gb in ext2 and 39mb in rfs. Yeah, freaky.
Did a reboot and it looks mostly fine. Did file space check in oclf and it shows one volume in rfs, no evidence of any ext2 partition. Only issue is that it thinks a lagfix is in place because of missing playlogos1 file (i'm guessing it checks for it as a prerequisite to lagfixing). I thought I had restored that, but whatever. That seems to be the only issue though. Having some 3g radio wonkiness, but not sure if that's related.
Anyone got that playlogos1 file?
When i was running my lag fix i got that same error message. I tried pressing back to start uninstalling apps but saw that the remove lag fix was still running, so i just let the phone sit there for a few more minutes and it re-booted.
Yay, just went back into oclf and this time it gave me the option to reinstall the boot animation. That worked and now I'm lagfix free!
cool i just did that my self. Do you think we need to remove the ext 2 tools?
Just removed the OCLF. There was a moment of concern when removing when it was stuck on copying files from EXT2 to RFA. It was copying for it seemed like over 5 minutes and then rebooted. It finally finished, then I removed EXT2 Tools and unrooted without any problems.
I am definitely missing the lag fix. Hopefully the update will speed things up, if not, the lag fix will be reinstalled after compatibility is confirmed with JI6.
SO HOW THE HELL DO I FREE UP MORE SPACE??? I erased a bunch of apps already and it still says 289MB free on RFS. The only thing that changed was the memory used on EXT2 from 386MB 355MB
BUMP. Anyone??
By RFS it means internal SD. Remove something from your Internal sdcard to free up space.
well, I moved a bunch of videos and pictures from the internal memory to the external SD card and it made no difference.
I think it's gotta be apps, not media. The disk space we're playing with is the Vibrant's 2gb app partition.

You must delete apps only. It's technically not the SD card itself but the space for app storage that is too low. Delete big ones, remove OCLF, then reinstall the apps.
Well I deleted a few apps and the RFS is till at 289. It didn't change. I got the memory used on EXT down to 229MB. It's still giving me the same message.
DONE. I backed up all of my apps and deleted most of the larger ones. It let me uninstall. Tested with quadrant benchmark and it's back down to the upper 800's

[Q] Error:"Low on space"

I got this error message appears in the right lower corner of the screen: Low on space.
I check the storage of xoom, 29GB was used by apps. Then I check the storage used by each apps, none of them used more then 25MB storage, the total should be less than 250Mb.
could anyone help me about this issue? Thanks.

There is no media in the device.
29GB used by apps??? What apps do you have installed?
This is obviously an error on how the hardware is reporting available space to the device. Not totally sure how to fix it....
Huh, strange one. Maybe do a factory reset? Definitely a problem.

It seems that I have no other choices.
Wow I don't know if there are enough apps in the market to fill over 29 GB.
I I just got the same error out of nowhere. 29 gig plus use by my apps. I load up the apps and the biggest one is my gallery with 1.9 gb. There's definite problem reporting somewhere.

Delete some of the more "low rent" apps. Probably bad programming throwing the xoom off.
I just wanted to confirm this just happened to me yesterday as well. I had just checked my storage (aprox. 1.5gb media/2gb apps) then crashed out for a quick nap. About an hour later I awoke, rolled over, grabbed my Xoom and discovered I had the same dreaded memory notification that has plagued my Incredible. Checked storage and suddenly had like 28gb in my apps! Market quit working because of this as well, couldn't update or install apps. I found no other solution other than factory reset as deleting the apps one by one did not free up the space. The last 2 apps I recall downloading were friendstream and tablet keyboard. I was thinking an errant app was downloading all sorts of stuff as I was connected to wifi or perhaps didn't know how to properly utilize the Xoom's memory as it is a little different than your standard Android device. If this is a system OS issue as it is with my Inc, this is totally unacceptable and needs to be identified and addressed by google soon.
Anyone have any other ideas on what is causing this or how to help identify where/how exactly our memory space is vanishing?

Happened to me too. Factory reset 'resolved' it, but didn't really do anything to figure out what the root cause of the issue is... I went so far as to uninstall all the large games on my Xoom and no luck.

[Q] How to optimize N7 speed, without changing the animations?

I know about changing the scroll speed or animations on Nexus 7 but i'm looking for other solutions
I have a 32gb Nexus 7 that just started showing a lot of lags currently which didn't appear before (regardless of how many apps did i used with closing them). Lags start to show on Home menus, Dolphin browser is starting to lag as well (this didnt happen before).
Its quite annoying since it was smooth the last time i used it and now i feel like i'm using a gingerbread/ICS device which is quite frustating
i still have 9+ GB remaining free space out of the 27.35+GB. i think the space should be much of an issue since 9gb is still a lot.
You might try a cache cleaner app like 'Clean Master' or 'App Cache Cleaner.' Also, a shutdown, restart is good to do on occasion.
I just had this happen to me also.
I went to settings and storage, the cache took almost 6Gb of data so i taped that and cleaned it... Now it feels new again

I just wiped 800+mb of cache files, i also removed some movies from its memory just to make sure...
Is it possible that it might have viruses on it?
I have avast currently installed as a precaution and i didnt detect any viruses but i am starting to get oc/ paranoid about this.
i might use restore factory settings on it, as a last resort.
EDIT: i'm still waiting a few months for the warranty to wear off so i can root this thing..
