[Q]Hi res.. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Damn with some apks you can get brilliant hd backgrounds but the icons and widgets always suck they look crappy anyone knows how this comes and if it can be solved or is it due to Android? I can't imagine that our phone is causing it since standard Android wallpapers are never hi res too, but you can get hd walls with special apps. Especially music widget is strange why is it this bad quality? Needed to know.. i won't buy a new phone but I am considering it because I am a bit tired of the ugly image quality or is this on any Android device?

HTC HD (WM) Overwelming

Hey everyone,
Let me start off by saying that this is not a promo or hate post for the iPhone.
I was always a WM user, had a Trinity for a few years and loved it. I went to the iPhone and I must admit it is much better than the WM in many ways. Months later I heard about the HD, I have it now but after using the iPhone I feel such a diconnect with WM. I used the HD with a few various ROMs but went back to the iPhone due to the superior integartion of software and hardware, everything just seems to work so much better. Now my HD is just collecting dust. I know that the HD is a much superior device in hardware (except for the touch screen-I am not talking about resolution). There are a bunch of little things that annoy me about the HD and I know it is just software realated. For instance, I can't even go on the Facebook site with Opera Mobile, looking at pictures just does not work properly. Youtube video are not as smooth or high quality partly due to lack of 3G, I am in Canada. I know this can't be changed but still a bit of a bother. The camera is 5mp but I can't even take pictures of my 1 year old son without blurring due to the shutter speed. I read many threads and hacks but it is just overwelming. Can you guys make a few suggestions as I really like the HD and want to use it instead of the iPhone. How can I get faster browsing on EDGE? I don't care about streaming Youtube but is there at least an option to download Youtube videos in HiDef to watch at a later time? I don't want to ramble on and I hope you understand what I am asking, any help is appreciated.
Yes, I do like and I don't mind tweaking my phone.
If you really like the IPhone's simplicity check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473116&highlight=finger+friendly
to download youtube vids look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427702
for facebook just set your browser to iphone.facebook.com (isntead of m.facebook.com).
Other browsers are faster than Opera but I have a 3G Touch Pro and an Edge Touch HD and the speed difference actually isn't that much - just a few seconds no a full page. You can try to use Iris Browser (it is based on webkit so it looks iPhony) or NetFront or SkyFire (fastest but not high resolution yet).
Also have a look at Opera Mini not Mobile that comes installed on our THD. This browser is fast.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=469469&highlight=opera
I recommend Opera Mini v4.2.13216 if you don't want to do any tweaking.
Concerning the camera: I recently compared it to the iPhone camera under daylight conditions and the HD camera really is about 10 times better. The pictures are very sharp, there's no grain and you can zoom in 4 times and still see details.
The iPhone pictures were blurres, zooming in was useless and they were grainy even in brigt daylight.
I suggest you disable the shutter sound and set the picture quality to 'super-fine'. I took photos with the HD while skiing, which makes it impossible to hold the phone still and the pictures were perfect nevertheless.
Concerning Facebook, try using another browser like Iris, Internet Explorer or Skyfire (which is not yet released but will definitely be able to display any website, including video).
Next, I have to say that my HD recently annoyed me a lot and I already thought of getting an iPhone (again).
I tried to replace all the Windows Mobile applications with finger-friendly alternatives and was quite successful (see the video bugsykoosh posted earlier).
However, Winterface caused crashes and could not make me happy at all (in fact, I was even more annoyed by the crashes and the lack of beutiful animations like the ones on the iPhone).
Then I made a WAD2 skin using bluemetalaxe's realize iconset and the iPhone-like launch animations. Now, everything runs smooth again. No crashes anymore, an interface that's completely customizable and beautiful and launching applications is fun
I then installed FingerMenu and replaced all the horrible green with a nice blue and now I love my HD again!
OK, that's my story... please excuse my any bad grammar in my story as I'm not English
i looked up bluemetalaxe threads and i ended up with huge sets of icons and i have no idea how to assigne them or how they would look like on my hd :S can you please post screens for your hd and how it looks like now and direct us to the thread with the instructions to follow ? please.. this sounds so interesting to my and i am actually bored with the touchflow style and capabilities :\
There is nothing wrong with wanting the iPhone if you don't need to switch in spare battery during the day, do not require GPS, and do not keep important excel, power point, and word document on your device.
iPhone is an extremely attractive product. The user interface, smoothness of operation is way ahead of winmo devices'.
However, if your need could only be met by HD, like in my case, you would have to sadly give up the extremly sexy user experience.
To mimic that interface, if you really really like iPhone's UI, I recommend using Vito's Winterface. It is as close as you could get to program launching and navigation. Without complication.
Then, start replacing and looking for finger friendly software to replace the older ones that you had collected. For example, replace the standard contact application with Inesoft Phone 4, may be also use its fovourites (althernatively you can use Winterface's). Use Vito's SMS Chat to replace the SMS. Opera browser is good, but check out Opera mini (It's fast, and scrolling is just as good as Safari's). Use ThumbCal for Calendar for example. Use Google Map with Street View to beat iPhone's standard google map. Use Vito Audio NOtes Touch for voice and call recording. Have you tried Web Video Downloader? It lets you watch not just youtube but every other type of flash websites too, with better video quality downloaded or watched instantly. Try out Panaromic Calc Pro for calculator
GPS applications is the area that winmo devices really shines over iPhone. I have TomTOm7, Garman, Mapking, and iGO8 on my devices. In Australia, I use only TomTom but I use others while travelling overseas.
DOn't forget SoftMaker for desktop class functionality in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. Or use it just to open attachments without losing any formatting.
The day before yesterday, I was using TF3D, customized with wallpaper on every tab and applications changed with SSMaPa. Today, mine desktop is based on Winterface. Tommorrow? May be SPB Mobile Shell again. This is so much fun playing with all types of software. It makes my toy brand new again each day. Yes, it can be a little laggy at times with tons of software installed. It may also freeze my device once in a while. But, I get to play, and the device serves my need.
Its not just the iphones UI which is better, its the quality of its apps. Developers make more efort with the iphone. Just compare shazam on WM to shazam on iphone, and also lastfm, facebook etc.
Commercial developement for WM has stopepd, everyone develops for iphone now.

Not to mention a iPhone app is 2-3 USD/EUR, while WM apps are like 20 USD.
SO WTF !!!?!? why should we pay more, how more supperior is WM apps against iphone. with NOTHING, in fact, i have 4-5 apps for HD that actually use the HD capabilities (screen res and accelerometer) while, ALL applications on iPhone look better, work better and are cheaper.
There is a commercial product i looked at last days (can't remember, something like a chat program), WM version was 19,99 USD, while iPhone was 3.9 USD .. so again WTF ?!
THAT is why iPhone gains so much momentum. (and because of the capacitive screen )

[Q] Looking At Buying Touch HD - Pre-Buying Questions

Hi everyone,
I've been browsing the forum for a while and thought I'd sign up to ask a few questions that I couldn't find answers to. I was reading one post from a guy asking if he should get the iphone or Touch HD. I was in a similar situation but I really want to have to customization options. Sorry if some of these options seem basic, just need some advice..
1 - What is the difference's between the ROM's? Are all of the HD's the same, and the different ROM's can just be flashed with different software?
2 - Is it possible to set the e-mails to be checked every "x" number of minutes?
3 - Whats the camera quality like at night? I currently have a C905 and the camera quality is pretty good, with a good flash. But if i was ever in a pub/club, what would the quality be like?
4 - Is it possible to set longer tones for sms, my current tones are limited to 10 seconds, which is fine, just curious. Also can you set different tones for sms and email?
5 - I was reading in the quickest way to send an sms about going to the contacts, if i had an sms off the person that i wanted to send one to, could i just click that and click reply?
6 - Is the screen on the Touch HD a lot better than the iphone? I haven't seen a touch HD in real life, and quite liked the iphone that a guy i know has, but never had chance to use it. The iphone looks nice, but i guess i like to mess around with my GUI and make it my own.
Also, everywhere i seem to read about the phone lists one of its down sides as not being as user friendly as the iphone (though i did see a video on youtube where a guy installed software which made it look just like the iphones user interface) and that its a big phone (but looking at it it doesnt seem that big to me, being thinner than my C905, and only a few mm wider and taller...). Whats peoples views on that?
Thanks guys, and i hope things like this haven't been asked again and again and again

1. Unofficial roms are customised for speed etc and often include new improved features. It's best to try a few and see which you like most, or if your happy with the stock rom keep it.
2. It is possible. It's also possible to use push services so email is delivered to your phone straight away.
3. Useless. It doesn't have a flash and even day time pictures aren't of good quality. I came from a nokia n82 which had an amazing camera and the Touch HD is really let down by it's camera.
4. Im not sure on this as i use the default tones. But i think it might be possible to use whatever tone/song you like regardless of length.
5. Yes you can reply to texts by going into the message and typing your reply. Texts are displayed in threaded mode so it's just like a IM conversation.
6. In my opinion the screen is miles better than the iphone. The resolution is great for browsing, viewing photos and watching movies.
your questions are not really blackstone spc but general windows mobile spc
1
roms are updated by operators once in awhile to fix bugs or to introduce features
and custom roms can be based on any rom version and include and exclude any feature and or program depend on the rom
2
yes thats std behaviour of email box you change it in setting of the outlook for pocketpc
3
personally i never come across a cmos chip based camera which all phones use which could hold a candle to a real ccd chip that digital cameras use
4
don't know of any time limitations of those but think only wav files are supported as non ring-tones
5
yeah thats called threaded sms's and is the default sms handling
it works kinda like im in many respects
6 well it's bigger and got
320X480 iphone
480 X 800 blackstone
a pixel or 2 more
The youtube page that i was reffering to it looking like an ipod interface has comments on the bottom and it seems like two people arguing over the ipod and htc touch hd, and it refers to this....
"colour difference as much as you will notice the screen resolution difference..
" (DJDa9L)
Iphone color amount 300 X stronger
HD resolution only about 2 X more
(840/480 vs 480/320)
Result:
-> All in all better Appearance on Iphone

Now I assumed that the HD touch would have had a much nicer display, but got a little confused by this...
Also, in comparison to the ipod 3G is the phone much bigger in its actual dimensions (phone specific rather than operating system based lol )

Actually when I compared it to my friends iphone the HD is a sliver shorter AND the screen is noticeably larger
Ideal
I really like the idea of customization, and the ability to carry round pretty much a minature PC (obviously not with all the features, the only games i really play are classic lucas arts ones) and the main software is windows based. Would be nice to be able to take some ok snap shots, like with my current phone, and have some nice apps that are a bit different to mess about on. I like to have my emails though, and also MMS. Think the touch HD would be ideal
" the only games i really play are classic lucas arts ones"
there is a perfectly good scrumm client for pocketpc which makes it possible
to play all old lucas art games on a windows mobile
Awesome!
I'll be the envy of all my mates!
One last question.... The Touch (in the UK i believe...) is locked to the orange network. From looking on ebay, the outside doesn't seem to be branded. Are they easy to unlock, or is special software required? I'm guessing a rom flash is all thats required to change any branding in the software?
Also, I'm guessing that you can because of the rest of the spec, if i changed over to T-Mobile, would the HSPDA work ok... And would it work as a usb modem? lol
Thanks for all your help so far!
You can buy an unbranded model, as far as i know the orange ones are locked and you have to pay to get them locked, there hasn't been a free solution here on the boards yet.
Do remember that the screen isn't going to be as sensitive as the iphones, the resolution is great, but you're talking about two entirely different screen technologies.
passive (hd) vs capacitive(iphone)
Never had any experience on touch screens other than an old ipaq that i used to have. So never really played with the touch screen on a ipod. Only touch screen i have tried was on a Samsung Tocco but I'm not sure what type of screen that is...
the ipaq's screen would be passive.
It should be fairly easy to use with one hand i hope (for texting). It seems like the ideal phone.
Is the screen easily damaged? It'll be carried around in my jeans pockets and i dont want to add a BIG case, other than the protective slip case that it comes with, as dont want something massive in my pants..... If you'll pardon the way that sounds. lol

Pros and Cons of SGS

Hey i'm considering getting the Samsung Galaxy S when my contract runs out but i'm still undecided between it and the HTC Desire. The specs for both phones are incredible.
Anyone have any problems with the SGS?
or Anything really AMAZING about it?
Please help

mostly lags and application force close but that's it..
cant be solved by updating the firmware or rooting..
..as for the application.. it happens to all android phones.. normal day to day experience.
not being biased or anything.. i can say that i am happy with my SGS - JG5.
I'm having problems with GPS. The iPhone next to me has me located in the right building but my SGS when it even gets a lock has me a few hundred kilometers off.
I get bad application lagg where I'm left looking at a black screen for quite a few seconds.
I don't like the non-standard usb connection. Plus I'm having problems connecting it to Kies, which I still have no idea what it is for.
The music player isn't great and I often get songs lagging.
On the plus side it is much better built than I expected from all the reviews I read. I thought the back would be thin and creak but it is solid.
The screen is awesome. I've been using it sat outside in the sun.
PROS: everything out of the box is better than other phones currently available in the market.
any "issue" you find, if you find any, can be fixed by software, including the GPS problem that some people have reported
CONS: battery life, that's all
Pros:
Needless to say the screen is absolutely amazing, watching videos is pure delight on this phone. compared to my old iphone 3g the difference is huge.
the default video player plays anything i have thrown at it, all look really good on the phone.
the music player is basic and does the trick, i really dont see the advantage of doubletwist etc, i found the desktop doubletwist extremely slow and laggy. I chose to use mediamonkey and stock player and it works perfectly, no lag at all. i do get some random album art which looks very poor almost like a thumbnail like some people reported. but majority of album art looks fine....
my phone generally is very snappy and quick, the only real lag i get is gallery for a few seconds and adding widgets/app shortcuts on the home screens.
im using launcher pro and pure stock rom.
i would also like to add that my first and only smart phone was an Iphone 3g 2 years ago, this is my first android phone and im loving the OS, i had my worries at first with people saying it can make certain tasks harder than they should be but tbh i find non of this, i love the notification window and widgets.
2.2 froyo coming which will hopefully reduce the little to no UI lag.
Cons:
Battery? Although its far better than my 2 year old Iphone 3g's battery.
A little lag here and there but no where near as bad as people moan about.
we all know that SGS can play all filetypes of video, but i have a question i haven't seen yet answered anywhere...does the SGS video player support subtitles?
pros:
light, beautiful screen, fast processors.
cons:
occassionals lags, reboot, slight stability problem.
waiting for 2.2 update.
Non standard USB?

Sounds like you need a firmware update!
Non standard USB? Are you aware that micro USB IS the defacto standard for data and charging connections on phones across manufacturers worldwide?
Tried replacing your music player with MusicMod - Far superior. Google "pirate media music mod"
Cons:
Lagging occurs quite often which is annoying to say the least (I hate that).
GPS not very accurate
Occasionally crashes
Design not very pleasing to iphone like - looks better in pictures
Touchwiz waste of space and ram
Pros:
Screen resolution
Video playback brilliant best around
Graphics best out there very smooth.
Screen size bigger then most
Music player is better then most including desire
Speaker LOUD and clear better then most other android
How come no ones mentioned that the SGS has a killer CPU and Vid Chip? just check the benchmarks. I too was going to buy the Desire but on the same day I was going to lay down some cash they launched this thing
Bad: has no trackpad as some old games and apps depend on it.
Pro's
- Beautifull screen
- Fast browsing
- Nice camera (for taking pictures during the day)
- Nice for gaming! Better FPS than other phones
- The phone is very light compared to other phones (it weighs less then the desire which is a smaller phone)
- Nice music player and the allshare app (which i use sometimes)
- Faster then all the phones when you apply the "lagfix"
Con's
- Lag (but this is fixable with the new JG5 firmware or/and the "lagfix")
- No image stabilizer for video capture
- No flash (camera)
- Reported GPS problems (these are software/firmware issues so they can be fixed)
- Battery life (but all the 1GHz phones suffer from this problem)
Allround its a great phone! if you are a tweaker then you CAN make it better!

LOL. This could have been MY post.
Pros:
* Blazing fast (when not lagging).
* Awesome touch-response (when not lagging).
* It's Android
* Calendar is great
* Screen is great.
* Charges while connected to computer.
* Superior for mobile gaming. (Assuming the gamedevs actually use the hardware)
Cons:
* Dotpitch is subpar on the screen. (This is the one con they definitely can't do anything about)
* Laggy.
* GPS is unreliable
* 3G/2G switching is unreliable under some conditions
* Firmware updates are not OTA.

I think the lag on the adding applications or widgets is much, much worse with LauncherPro, I use LauncherPro, but the lag on adding anything to my home screens I attribute to LauncherPro because I didn't have any issues on TouchWiz (I think part of the reason is because of the way I have LauncherPro cache my pages for improved scrolling)
The screen is the biggest battery drain and this screen is nearly 20% bigger than the iPhone 3G with more pixels, we are a bit lucky to get the battery life we do, and the standby battery life is better than the iPhone 4's.

I think you'll have to hardcode them into the video before putting it onto the phone, Google it.

Thinking of buying an atrix. A few questions first

Coming from an iphone 4>nexus S>Inspire 4G im akin for an atrix. Im just curious about a few things though, im not quite sure if i should give up my inspire just yet.
1. HDMI out - I'd like to connect the phone to my 55" LED TV and watch some netflix, HULU, or even network shows (fox, nbc ect) Is it possible? Or will i need the Multimedia dock for this? Or can i just output straight from HDMI to tv. Also would i need a third party app like PlayOn since Netflix wont play on Android yet? T
2. Quality - As said before i'd be outputting to a pretty awsome TV. How is the quality of the video youve guys seen?
3. Screen resolution - Coming from the Iphone 4 then Nexus S the inspire was great but you can easily notice the resolution, vividness just isnt there with the Inspire. This is a must have for me now. Is the screen resolution really all that???
4. Battery life - Im a heavy user. Im lucky if i make it 10 or 12 hours on my Inspire. Does the battery live up to the hype?
5. Fingerprint reader - Does it work? Is it convenient? Or is it just an add on that nobody really uses (i.e. NFC Nexus S)
6. Motoblur - How is it? Is it possible to install say ADW launcher and replace your home screen entirely?
Any opinions are are really appreciated guys
i dont see you being a custom rom flashing addict,
buy it, atrix is great and address all your problems
blur f---ing is aweful, but putting ADW over it will fix that. i prefer GO launcher personally, but either will do the job.
I had to freeze a bunch of stuff with TiBackup, its just personal, you dont have to do it.
What about netflix via HDMI?
1.Well you can do the hack that people have found now to enable the docks without the docks; all you need is a Bluetooth keyboard.
2. I played one video over HDMI; nothing big, but I did see scan lines but it didn't really bother me.
3. The screen resolution is higher than any other android device and that makes everything smaller and more compact; I liked it.
However the actual quality of the screen is something that a lot of people don't like.
4. Battery life is awesome.
5. Fingerprint reader - I loved using it; allowed me to get into the phone within 2 seconds. However you have to get adjusted to it, there's a certain knack to getting it just right.
6. Just install another launcher. The Motorola Widgets are pretty good though.
Not to mention you can use the motorola widgets on go or adw.. It's a great phone

1- i have seen mods on the andriod development form where you can use the HDMI without the need of the dock. you have to root your phone first
2- i watched videos on youtube " still didnt get my atrix" and i thought the quality is nice. sure it wont be as good as blue ray player hocked on your 55 HDtv, but it will do the job
3- iphone 4 has higher screen rez but small screen. galaxy S has high color but you can see the pixels with your own eyes even if you are half blind
The atrix screen has higher rez than galaxy S. but ofcourse not the same colors. abit less "bright"
4- best thing about the phone. its 1900+ mah. not a single phone came close to it. you will be very happy
5- ita a gimmick. you will love it. its a nice show off in front of your friends to envy you. " my screen will only open with my fingers " but when you are alone. i dont think you will use it . or at least i wont.
6- i dont know why people hate it. i used to have a droid and if its the same thing, then i love it " i dont have the phone yet " its better than the galaxy S skin. and i am sick of the htc skin. plus like other people said, you can others. so that is not a problem
the only problem i see is the locked bootloader. i like to test roms. and i bought the phone but i am hoping i dont regret it for this " giving up roms for good phone performance with dual core Nvidia gpu. and 1 gig of ram. you will never need task manager anymore
i did the HDMI out webtop mod and its great. i watched a youtube video at 480p with no problem, it got a little choppy however when i hit 720p.
The hdmi cable included with the phone will allow you to view any video stored on the phone on any hdmi capable tv. You can also listen to music via the hdmi if you have a sound system capable.
The battery life is great provided you do the common sense disables of software. Check this forum for my battery advice thread.
The phone is great. The finger print scanner is rather functional and works great.
You will be happy

I am also looking to buy it and this stuff was useful information. Thanks!
I have another question. How buggy is the phone in general? I saw the thread about restarts but was there ever a consensus about how widespread and the cause? Are there any other irritating bugs? I'm coming from a nexus one which I loved but would freeze about once a week and require me to remove the battery.

How to make wallpapers fit???

Hello xda I have been out of the android department for a while. To be exact its been since December of 2011 and since than I have been a member of the iOS family. I have recently gotten back into the world of android with a galaxy s4. Unfortunately I have run into a problem that I used to all the time when I had my old htc evo. The wallpapers do not fit. They are always zoomed in. Regardless of the crop it zooms in. Some launchers allow the scrolling effect which if you scroll the five slides you see the whole wallpaper but I am not really looking for that. I was more hoping to see the whole wallpaper at all times (like I do on iphones). I have seen post about different wallpaper apps that can crop the wallpaper to fit right but unfortunately those are not working for me either. They always zoom it to far out and half my screen is black while the middle is the wallpaper. I just dont get why this was an issue almost 3 years ago and it still is....
Crop them yourself on a computer. I don't have any problems with my wallpapers. Sure yours have high enough resolution? Doesn't sound like it. The s4 has a full hd 1080p screen.
Make sure the wallpaper is sized for the S4, and don't compare android to crappy iOS. When you only allow one phone and one tablet it is easy to make apps and wallpapers. There are 100's of different android phones and tablets, screen sizes and shapes, so making a universal wallpaper is a little harder to do.
