Wait to be rooted.
You can search in the dev section for access to the wifi AP settings and there is something supposedly but I haven't tried it myself.

Just wait for th OTA update!!

Received an OTA update to my GF G2 & she now has Wifi tethering & the wifi calling application.

Yes there is wifi tethering.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk

The ability to use a wifi tether is really all I'm looking for right now. When I rooted my G1 and installed BarnacleWiFi from the market, that just opened up a whole bunch of options for me. I would connect my iPad to my phone and surf at the airport and other places where wifi wasn't free. At work I could do it and access sites which were locked down by the firewall, but I needed to access when I had to work on an agent desk and didn't have my laptop handy. Being able to tether with wifi is HUGE! I didn't know the G2 couldn't do this when I bought it, but I still would have bought it anyway. I can still tether with a USB and then use Conectify on my laptop to create a hotspot for others if I wanted to, but not having to drag out the laptop to create a hotspot was just toooo awesome. I'm really hoping the OTA update comes in soon. I won't even wait for a root solution on the G2 if they are able to enable that on my phone.

Using one of the many posted temp root methods will allow "wifi for root users" app to work perfectly. I tested myself last night. Use the newest one posted on the google code page.
Anyone that received the ota update already, pm me, it can help the cause! If you have the notifaction saying update but haven't done it yet even better...

Its funny how EVERYONE that says they got the OTA update shows proof that they have it by uploading pics showing the update. But the funny part is, they ALL post the same EXACT
pics that ive seen in other threads from a user claiming they have the update. I smell.......bull

So you've seen the pics from at least 1 user showing you the wifi tether but you still say it's bull.
The OTA was stopped by TMO due to it being released before they wanted it. Only TMO employees and demo devices (used by vendors)received the updates and not all of them received it. TMO has halted all OTA updates to the G2 until the tethering data plan is ready to launch. From what I've heard you're looking at $10-$15 per month for tethering w/a cap of 5GB just like the broadband cards. Give it about 2-3 weeks and you'll see an official release.
Before you ask how I know this...well lets just say I work w/TMO released and unreleased devices. I get to test them out and use them before the release date. I can tell you the myTouch 4G, otherwise known in the blog world as the myTouch HD, will have wifi tethering and wifi calling out of the box. The wifi tethering data feature will be ready before/or on the launch of this phone in November.
PS. Don't ask me for pics of unreleased devices...not gonna happen since I like my job.

[q] wifi tethering and root access

Ok Guys my brother just got his mytouch 4G and he over heard that Tmobile charges 14.99 a month for tethering so I thought for him to avoid that problem he would have to gain root access. So my question is this true or not ????????

Sounds right to me. You can't tether for free until you do so as far as I know.
Just looking into how to do this as I know someone who just got one and would love to have that ability for free.
My phone isn't rooted yet (just got a replacement) and I tethered my netbook using the stock wifi hotspot app that came with the phone.
It let me tether just fine without any problems. When I went to T-Mo's website, it shows up as regular data usage.

Free...for now. Sooner or later (likely the former) TMob will start charging as they've already released details on the $14.99 tethering/hotspot plan.
The alternative is to root and use and use another wifi hotspot app (e.g. the Android wifi tethering app).
T mobile rep charged me then called customer and had them remove the extra monthly charge.

They will though. I asked the store and the 800 #. 14.99 they said on top of the data plan.... Screw that. I am rooted and fully plan to skip that $14.99

cutting off tethering?

so ive been tethering for like two months with no issue via my rooted glacier.
just got a text from tmobile..
889: Free T-Mobile Msg: Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi sharing access may be blocked unless you add a Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing plan available at my.t-mobile.com
should i be worried? can they really cancel it on a rooted phone? what gives.
well they blocked it now.
its just normal web browsing which is odd.
AIM still works, and i can still browse via tor. or manually putting an s to make it https. but that isnt practical for browsing.
any ideas? different browser perhaps? i wonder how they are determining that i am tethering.
ugh, any ideas would be appreciated..how annoying.
I talked to my brother and he said its probably my user agent. So I'm going to get the ref control add on and change it so its sending what my phone sends and see if that works. Ill let y'all know how it works.

Keep us posted of the user agent change, I'd be curious to know this myself. Data packets should be entirely agnostic to their network unless are they doing deep packet inspection or specifically monitoring non-port 80 traffic, or port 80 traffic with different user agent strings.
Any luck with your attempts?

Isn't free tethering still available if you use the android-wifi-tether app? or the one built into CM? I heard you only get charged if you use the stock wifi tethering app
No worries for you, its only looking for desktop user agent strings to block. At home I hotspot to my mt3g from my mt4g and then tether the 3g to the desktop. Its never got a warning yet. Can you believe Sprint might be buying T-mobile out? I'll be canceling that service, again.

The good thing is if this plans out correctly those of us with T-Mobile will be able to exit the contract w/o a ETF. I hate the fact of having to use ATT or BigRed.... Wait a tick. Cincinnati Bell uses the same frequencies @ T-Mobile where i live. So i could use them and keep my phone....

Personally i followed LeMans racing. I followed NASCAR back in the day when i was younger, but heck i'm only 28. I like the various class of cars in LeMans, it brings a new dynamic to racing. I might have car that can do 30-40MPH faster than the next guy but it cannot pass him, it doesn't do any good. I also like grass root dirt tracks, those are a blast to go watch.

what's new?
yeah within minutes of me activating the phone yesterday evening it was pushed to my phone OTA.
I bet it's the update that takes away free tethering.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I did the update when I first received the phone on Thursday and I still have tethering. This is a built in native Android feature. Eliminating that would defeat the purpose of a Nexus device.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Yeah I saw it as well, yesterday. I went ahead and installed it. The corporate Sprint store around here opened at 11AM and I saw it when my phone was activated at 11:30, so it must have been something they knew about before the launch.
The description said it fixes minor performance issues or something to that effect.
GRJ22 is the final OTA build sent to the rest of the Nexus S devices. The NS4G phones likely all shipped with GRJ06D and are just being brought in line with the latest release.
You can find a changelog for GRJ22 in the OTA threads (mostly bugfixes and Google Talk video chat) but it likely doesn't all apply coming from GRJ06D.

I was pretty surprised tethering was still in there, too, given that they charge for it for the other phones.
I didn't think they would be able to charge for tethering on a pure Google phone, until I noticed they updated the features page at Google.com/Nexus. It now says under portable wifi hotspot that it is subject to carrier fees. :/

Sprint rep said tethering wouldn't work unless the account was already set up for the mobile hotspot $29.99/month plan. Tested to see, and you can set the phone to act as a mobile hot spot and make the connection, but it wouldn't actually give me internet access. The laptop showed the connection, but with local access only and an error about the IP address. Not surprised - it was the same way with the CDMA Hero, too.

has anybody made a 2.3.4 stock rooted rom based on the OTA? my phone gets here tomorrow and i want to root and go to town!

Considering purchase

I am really considering buying a Nexus 7 but am curious if it can be tethered to a GSM GNEX running on Tmobile without paying for the hotspot feature. I have searched the forum but no threads have been specific enough to my question. Thanks guys.
maybe ask in the genx forum, it will be easier to find someone there with a n7 then someone here with a genx
neither my rooted g1 nor my rooted g2 will connect via adhoc to my unrooted n7. I've been busy lately so I haven't attempted to fix this but I'm sure it will be very easy to do, there may even be custom roms for the n7 with the proper wpa supplement but I haven't looked into it yet as its not a bother nor have I the time.
point is it will work for some phones right out of the box with little or no effort, can't attest to it working with yours

appreciate the response. Thank you.
I use my lte Gnex and it works just fine.
Worst come to worse u could prolly use foxfi app
Do this
Go to a store that sell nexus7, turn on hotspot, see if u can connect
Oh I think I misunderstood your question.
Most custom rom for Gnex allow you to tether without paying the premium for hotspot. But, it uses your data plan. If you don't have unlimited, the data used will still count against your data plan allowance. There is no way around that. And if there was I don't think you would find it here :/
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm on tmobile and have the Gnex, I've had since April. I've been using the hotspot on it with no problems.... I've never received a notice from tmobile. I'm now using foxfi app. I don't think tmobile can tell when we use the gnex as a hotspot.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
They can't, because using foxfi is just making your data available to another device. It doesn't hide the data usage just allows another device to use ur plans data. Which they aren't allowed to block(vzw got "In trouble" for blocking apps that allow you to use ur data on another device. Tho they CAN block unlimited users from using them, they aren't allowed to FORCE tiered users to pay the hotspot premium to use the data on other devices)

There is not software from Tmo on your Gnex; just use the native hotspot feature on stock and you are good to go, the beauty of vanilla! I’ve been using this combo for weeks, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

That's what I was trying say....the GNex is one of those devices that T-Mobile can't "see" you tethering/hot spotting with. I've been doing it since May with not a peep from T-Mobile.
