I am new here but just wanted to know if anyone else has had issues with their Samsung Vibrant overheating???? I have had this phone for less than 2 months from my carrier and now it is dead and in for repair!! I went to go grab the phone and the screen did not come on; however, the buttons at the bottom were lit up so i tried the buttons on the side of the phone (on/off switch) still nothing. The top half of my phone (not where the battery is) got so hot that it burnt my hand. Then I noticed blue, red, green pixel stars on the screen (which by the way burnt the screen). I don't know if it is a faulty battery/charger? Or what. When I spoke to my carrier, they told me that this is the first they have heard about anything like my case. It has been in the shop for more than 1 month now and I am getting very annoyed..as they gave me a loaner Galaxy to use and I HATE IT!!! Anyone have any suggestions??? I did not game on this phone or anything...
Thanks so much,
Pam
Happened to an HTC Aria I had, and had to get a new replacement to AT&T. The digitizer went (burnt?) out, and since it's a touchscreen only phone it became unusable because I couldn't really do anything on it.
What kind of charger did you use? Especially car charger...
I have never had it on with a car charger. I have heard that one should put the phone on plane mode as the green charge battery light will not come on. From what I hear they are replacing the screen (which they have no choice as it is burnt) as well as the board. Why is it taking soooooooooooo long? I usually have it on WiFi all the time; however, this should not do anything. It makes me mad....I have waited for this phone to come out and when I got it, I thought there was no other...until this happened. I did notice it acting kinda slow and I realize some phones do get warm...but should NEVER get hot enough to burn one's hand!!!!
I'm guessing you didn't OC the phone or anything.
Yea, I keep mine on WiFi basically 80% of the time, but the phone (in stock form) turns that off when the phone sleeps. I have brightness set to auto.
I notice my phone gets very hot when I have it on a car charger, and I'm using a charger from T-Mobile. It doesn't happen when I have it charging from an outlet in the wall through a USB Extended cable.
That's the only time I notice my phone getting hot.
Also, using the phone on WiFi tends to keep the phone cooler than using it on a data connection - I've noticed that for a few phones I've owned.
The overheating issue was also a big problem with HTC HD2s (except those phones would just go into a reboot loop/lock up, instead of burning up ).
No I did not overcharge the phone; however, I do notice that the battery life is almost nil on this phone. Full charge does not last 2 long on the phone and I only use it basically to text my daughters...and a little texam holden lol. But I have noticed with this galaxy (the loaner phone) the battery stays good for 2 - 3 days! Although I really hate this phone so I do not use that much! How would they be able to tell if it is the battery?? From what they have told me, they are only replacing the screen and the board....Well something made it go hot!! Battery or charger...When I took the phone back to Aliant I was going to give them everything including the charger, but they just sent it away with the battery. How do they know it was not the charger?? Getting very frustrated....I have always owned a Samsung phone and have never had any issues until this phone....makes me want to go back....but I do like the Vibrant when it was working....esp the screen.....
Only things I've ever come across that have made a Vibrant overheat is using cheap non-oem extended batteries, overclocking the CPU / GPU or leaving it a car in a 120+ climate then expecting to make heavy of use it without allowing it to cool down first.
I have never replaced the battery...it is brand new (less than 2 months old)....Thank god I had insurance on it... One would think that it would not take this long to come back from being fixed!!! Have never left in car....don't have to worry about the 120 degrees we are INTO snow now!! LOL... I am disappointed with Samsung. How can they tell what made it go that way?? Battery? Home Charger? They should replace the battery in my opinion as well!!
How often does the Vibrant overheat? Is this a common issue?
not sure.....it only took one time for me that fried the phone...Now they are supposedly replacing the screenh (they have to it burnt an image on it) as well as the board.
I have never heard of this happening with the vibrant. They claim they have not heard of this issue??!! I cannot believe this. I would like to know what caused this. I thought perhaps it was the WiFi being on all the time, but I do not think this is why. I do not game on it....I do not overcharge it (only charge it via home charger when it shows battery getting low - which might i add says it is almost drained at mid day??!)
Seriously, I have never heard of a phone overheating. I mean, sure they get hot when talking on it, but never overheat.
my phone has gotten really hot gaming on it while charging (stock charger and moto cliq charger), but it's never died or even decreased performance from it. even when oc'd.
Mine has gotten warm twice: once, I left Google Maps w/ GPS open when I put the phone in my pocket, and didn't realize it until I felt the heat in my pocket; the other time, I left ScummVM running (which apparently doesn't suspend properly), draining my battery over about two hours, again in my pocket.
Both times the phone was only warm to the touch. Nothing like you've described.
So do you have T-Mobile or Bell? If you have Bell (sounds like you do, I'm 99% positive) this is limited to the Bell i9000m Vibrant and not the T-Mobile T959 Vibrant.

There are threas on T-Mobile's official Vibrant forum about this issue.
My vibrant gets very very hot from time to time. I keep it on a usb hooked up to my computer at work with wifi on all day. Sometimes it will get super hot and not want to charge. I restart the phone and it usually fixes the problem. But its not the battery that gets hot, its for sure the yup part of the phone.

Sounds to me like you had a bad battery...this can cause the battery to overheat while charging. I work in construction and when the batteries on my power tools fail you can cook an egg on them when they are charging.

my phone goes to 120plus with me playing while charging. Why don't they just replace thw phone?

OMG there is a ScummVM emu!!!! BRBBRBRBRBRBRBRB.....
Did u happen to have anytype of case on your vibrant. I notuced when I charge my phone with the case on it got prety hot. Not to where it would burn my hand, but hotter than I really thought my phone should be while charging. So I take the case off when I put it on the charger.

I had only owned my Epic a week and this is what happened to the screen! I thought I was seeing things at first, then it got BAD. My wife captured this short video with her Evo before I took it in and traded it for a new unit.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm almost 2 weeks into my replacement unit and everything's fine so far.
That screen seems faulty to me.
Edit:
Or maybe even a loose wire?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Looks like a connector to the screen may have been loose :/..
I had it happen. Took it back and exchanged it even though after rebooting it appeared fine. I believe it was an overheating graphics processor (I've had similar happen on a computer).
At first, the guy at Best Buy was hesitant to replace it. I told him I didn't mind if he did a hard reset on it so he could rule out a software conflict (personally, I was confident it was hardware-related). Less than 3 minutes after being reset it was doing it again.
Now, I'll probably root it have some real fun!

I am having that issue right now! Anytime I even slide the keyboard out a little bit, my colors go all sorry and my wallpaper looks like old PC's with 256 colors! Lol or safe mode! I am 5 months into this phone, but hopefully it's still covered under some kind of warranty so I don't have to turn it on an insurance claim. Lol.

Wow! Seems to be a manufacturing defect in the latest round of shipments... Hope getting it swapped with a replacement was simple. Too much money to lay out to start with a defective unit like that, but as with anything, sh*t happens...just not cool when it happens to you!
With the amount of phones sold there are going to occasionally be defective ones.

I've had a similar issue, except much more subtle. Best way I can describe it: There will be random changing horizontal color bars that overlay on top of what is on the screen at about 90% transparency. It looks like something is interfering with the video output to the AMOLED. This only happens when the phone appears to be processing something like the loading screen for the Android Market or during the melody test in the *#0*# menu. It also appears to be related somehow to the battery charge level. The lower the charge, the more the effect. I'm just noting this issue here, and kind of wondering if anyone else has this issue. It doesn't really bother me at all, to be honest.

Getting it swapped was simple & quick once the Best Buy Mobile rep hard reset the unit and saw that the problem continued. As I said in the OP, my replacement is doing great so far.

I think I was having the same problem.
It only seemed to happen when the battery was nearly depleted, and even then only when the screen was on high brightness and displaying nearly all white.
Seems to me like at low charge levels the battery can't supply enough power to keep most of the pixels white at high brightness, so it starts getting distorted.
Go to sprint service and repair store and open a ticket. They will either charge you $35 or it will be free if you're under tep, so long that you have no liquid on the device and it's not rooted. I'm a tech at one of the stores.

So this morning was casually playing bubble jump on WP7 and all of the sudden backlight went off on lcd and the camera flash started going rampant.
hardware buttons wont work and a distinct sizzling sound and a giant pop then came from it before it became completely inoperable.
i left it for a day and the screen turns on but no light and the battery is still amazingly working.
any ideas what the problem might be, I've sent it back now just curios on people's thoughts.
to not confuse anyone it poped again which then made the device inoperable, forgot to mention that *hits head*

its the HTC auto destruct sequence. It has detected that you have enough money saved up for a new phone, has reported this fact to HTC and they have sent the kill signal. You should start recieving phone ad emails from them any time soon.

If you can get to the bootloader (even if you can not see the screen) task 29 and reflash original Win 6.5 ROM. By doing that you can eliminate software and, if you have warranty or insurance, exercise that.
I could not possibly suggest that now is a time to get insurance and, having waited a significant time period, drop the HD2 from a great height.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
hey, couldn't boot in to spl due to the pop, i think that ultimately killed the whole system as non of my spare batteries work nor does the charger, the insurance i have on it accepted it fine and have told me i should expect a replacement in about a week.
I am very pleased that you have insurance then and will not be without your beloved HD2.
If no charge is a secondary problem then an interesting test was whether or not you could access the bootloader whilst external power is applied - in this Maglr world I believe that you can trickle charge through that method. You probably did that which I think confirmed a major hardware problem (check battery terminal pins though).
I hope it arrives quickly for you.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
well from what i could tell the pins were all still in tact and before the pop, the charger worked on it. seemed very odd why it would just do that, but I'm no electrician. thanks for the replys guys =)
I've noticed that the device is pretty hot. I'm not sure, which is why I want to verify this with you.
I've used the "Battery Indicator" app which shows that the temp is 34-37 Celsius.
Does that seem about right?
Thank you

Really? Cause it always feels hot in my hand....
Could it be that I'm just hot (cause the weather here is hot as well)?
What would be too hot ( I mean what temperature ).
I've had the phone restart itself twice yesterday after getting too hot (don't know the temp it was at though)

34-37c is absolutely normal. Its quite cold where I am atm, and the battery is 37c.
You've also no idea that the phone restarted due to heat. I've gone through 5 replacements now for various reasons, and they all got pretty warm under use. However one of them got stupidly hot, so hot you couldn't even hold onto it without hurting your hand. Thats why I got that one replaced.
And yes, if the ambient temperature is hot, it'll make the phone feel hotter aswell.
None of my GSII's have ever restarted on their own though. Could've been due to an app/widget though.
There has been 2-3 threads on this, one of which I created myself.
It's normal for the device to get quite hot, especially around the camera at the back and the screen near the top of the phone when gaming or watching videos over wifi. It shouldn't get so hot it can't be held though. It also doesn't help if you have a case on the phone, especially a thick gel-type one. I'm currently looking for a thin perforated cover, like the official Samsung one, but unlike that one with protection for the top and the bottom of the device. I suspect these holes will help with heat dissipation.
The phone has inbuilt safety for overheating I believe, although mine has never gotten hot enough to activate it. The phone will shut down if it thinks any more heat will lead to damage.

Thanks!
Was just about to ask about the case, since I bought a black gel one.
So do any of you know of a case that won't affect the heat ( a lot )?
I am honestly afraid to walk with the device without a case so that I don't break the screen (or scratch it) or break the phone in half (it looks so delicate!)
Like I said, the perforated covers look the best for preventing heat build up, although the official Samsung case doesn't protect the top or bottom corners, which perversely are the most likely parts to be damaged if the phone is dropped. I'd like to get hold of a cover that looks like that but with all round protection.
But, is it also "normal" that the phone gets incredibly hot when you play music with headphones on?
I seem to have experienced all the issues everybody went through (except for the shutdown) but nobody ever mentioned music (i am talking about 3 minutes playback not hours!)
Anybody with the same issue?
Take the back case off and smell near the top left of the phone..
When mine got hot a weird smell came from it.
It's probably worth checking with something like osmonitor that you haven't got a stuck task.
A few times mine has got really hot and it was a process using 96% cpu...
Most recently it was SocialHub which I don't even use! Had to reboot the phone to stop it as it wouldn't die.
I also had extremal heating in that area while playing angrybirds and after I move app from SDcard to internal memory - All comes OK. So I suppose it is because your apps ar data (music etc) located on SD and some of them due to speed limits heats during work. (it is in addition to WiFi and other network activity). Cause when I plug SD into comp by adapter and perform long file framsfer it also heats
So is this thing hotter than the original Galaxy S? I can live with the phone at that temp, but any higher is questionable.
It will shut down if it gets to hot. And I guess it takes quite a bit because a few months ago on engadget.com I saw some video of an iPhone a palm phone and I think a nexus one on a grill to see which one will either break or shut down first. And after like a minute on a grill it finally shut off. So I wouldn't worry about it unless its so hot u can't hold it. Once with my evo I was using 4g GPS Bluetooth. And charging the phone and it got up to around 115° (around 46° in celcius) and was fine. I shut it down tho when I noticed it got that high tho haha

Mine (running XWKE7) went to 50 c when gaming "we rule" in game hub with charger plugged in. No external SD installed though.
Also keep in mind that fatter phones have more space to dissipate the heat. This phone is thin thin. That heat has to go somewhere! That's why I want a case that vents

as soon as I start playing "real football 11" i can essentially cook an egg on the phone. Other games are fine though
Could it be due to the installation of overclocking apps? Didn't notice it was this hot during my first few days of usage.
In the first few days after I got my SGS II the phone went really very hot every time I charged it or when I played a game or even when I watched a movie.
Since I use Lite'ning Rom and banned some system apps the problem vanished.
So for me it seems to be a software-sided problem.
so..
i bought a G4 H812 canadian off Kijiji (our local buy and sell like craigs list kinda thing) $50 no battery stuck in HS-USB 9008.
invested another $22 in a battery from a friend. now total invested into a possible bricked device... $72.. not to bad, a risk yes... but i had luck and confidence!
excellent screen scratch wise but had delamination all around the screen (see pic 1)
so with a half charged new battery, a possible bricked g4, and some previous knowledge and repair skills, i went to work.
tried QPST... nadda. tried LGUP... nadda. tried lg flashtool... guess what.. yup.. nothing... felt like friends repair shop was last left option...
but im a scrooge, and determined
so i took to youtube and google, found out it may have been one of a possible recall phones that had the thermal bootloop issue or emmc failure..
grabbed my custom heatgun and blasted it at 275 for 3min.. 3" away in circle patterns, just like most unbrick guides.. and left it cool for 30min.
put it back together and powered on to find it boot just fine not needing no relfash, had a pattern lock, contacted original owner the seller, got lock off,
wiped personals and internal storage, and found it was on 6.0.1... DAMN... no root possible.
go to downgrade and it doesnt, error's out before can even do anything, i forget, com41 change required...
so go to reboot and it stops booting again, but really warm... overheat issue again...
repeat the process many times trying to get to usable home screen as it would just keep freezing.. so i really examined all the phones parts and noticed... pic2 this really crappy black thermal tape, right where the main emmc and cpu is... kinda silly for such a heat hog i thinks.. so looking at the rf shield on phone where cpu is they also have this really ****ty goldish shield tape that on the reverse side is plasticy feeling.. not good for thermals i think.. so i tore it off, and removed that black thermal tape, cleaned top of cpu, heatgunned again this time at 300 for 2 1/2min. 2.5" away circulars, twice, 30 min cooldowns between.
took a light blue 1mm thick heatpad i found from a ddr3 ram stick heatshield, cut it to shape of cpu, and placed on top, also placed a piece on the slightly smaller black chip to the upper left of cpu, and also on the what i believe to be the power control ic on the opposite side of board, so that all possible sources of higher heat had thermal pads and better conductivity.
placed phone all back together, screwed all screws finger tight, placed sim card and sd and battery, back cover.. and hoped to god.. press power..
boots up nice and quick, hot at first after a factory wipe in recovery, like kinda scary hot at first then slowly cools...
its been running for almost 2 days now.. no slowdowns, no sluggish, does get warm when charging as expected.
but so far, ive been able to use sixaxis controller app, my ps3 controller, moonlight for root, and stream wildlands from my pc for almost 2 hrs,
charge up a bit, play Bully and run 3dmark for a while, and while it does get warm, its not near as bad as it used to be, i think something went right this time
its almost upon its 3rd full day of use without bootloop or overheat, mind u i am also using v4 CTT cpu mod
have xposed installed and root on 5.1 and am happy its still running so far.
so yeah, if this continues to run ill keep updating post when and if something happens to the device..
if it keeps running every two days ill update, and then this may just be a way to self fix the overheat bootloop cpu issues most of us have face i bet!
if you try this, let me know if it works for you.. id be happy to know im not the only one
I'm glad you got it working! Yeah this has been brought up here before on getting it working or putting in the oven etc lol. But it will eventually fail again there's no complete fix sadly. But hope it lasts you long I loved the G4 but the boot loop issues really gave it a bad rap.

I have done this already and I can assure you it's won't last. Nice work but you are being too optimistic. Without going into too much detail, the problem with the soc will slowly get worse the more you use the phone and putting heatsinks only slows down the rate at which it gets worse and does't stop it altogether. You haven't fixed the underlying issue. That's why it will fail again eventually.
My lg g4 had bootlooped issue too. Everything I did didn't solved the problem . From freezer to oven , and disabling two big core to remaining in only one core the device bootlooped everytime. Now what I did was : First I opened a device , remove the upper golden colour cover enclosing the processor, put some thin paper covering both processor and ram. Then put everything on their respective place. Then I turned a device it booted up. Downgraded to lollipop , disabled the big core using .tot method , rooted my LG G4 and enabled four core using free app by stojshic (Kudos to him: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/root-4-cores-activator-t3538175) . The device is working fine since week . I've restarted the device many times to check whether I will get bootloop again, played games like clash of royale for 2 hours etc. The device is working fine with less heating. The main culprit is I guess golden cover shield which is worsening overheating issue . The CPU generates heat and the cover shield is increasing thermal cycle . If by any means a thin better insulator is kept between the CPU and covering shield, this may solve the bootloop problem

Yes but the the heat of the phone when your playing games and booting up will still effect the soc to get worse over time, just at a slower rate. Its not a case of "if it does't reach a certain temp it will be fine". It's a case of "the more heat the quicker it will bootloop, the less heat the slower it will take to bootloop" but either way it will get there eventually as the problem gets worse over time.
Any recommendations?
Can anyone recommend a copper heat tape (or something better) that would work to get my phone running again? It's overheating and therefore bootlooping, so I am curious if there is any specific things to look for or stay away from when buying something to fix this, however temporary it may be.
Copper is better conductor of heat .. So it will work as heat sink ..U can put thermal paste in between CPU and copper tape..
Check it out

go to downgrade and it doesnt, error's out before can even do anything, i forget, com41 change required...
so go to reboot and it stops booting again, but really warm... overheat issue again...
repeat the process many times trying to get to usable home screen as it would just keep freezing.. so i really examined all the phones parts and noticed... pic2 this really crappy black thermal tape, right where the main emmc and cpu is... kinda silly for such a heat hog i thinks.. so looking at the rf shield on phone where cpu is they also have this really ****ty goldish shield tape that on the reverse side is plasticy feeling.. not good for thermals i think.. so i tore it off, and removed that black thermal tape, cleaned top of cpu, heatgunned again this time at 300 for 2 1/2min.

Can anyone recommend a copper heat tape (or something better) that would work to get my phone running again? It's overheating and therefore bootlooping, so I am curious if there is any specific things to look for or stay away from when buying something to fix this, however temporary it may be.
@ezzony was right, mine finally took a permanent dump last week after 3 more reheat attempts since last post, but it atleast lasted this long..
now im on a heavily modified Huawei Nova Plus converted from a MLA-L03 to a CAN-L11 software wise, so i could get perfect rooted Lineage OS 13 on it and xposed
i miss the camera of the g4 so much...
i still have my dead board Note 4, note 4 edge also dead board, and lg g4 dead board, all cause of same problems SOC overheats
seems like it was a common problem amongst tons of models too.... sad that we the paying customer get shoddy manufactured devices that we end up paying so much for...

Copper is better conductor of heat .. So it will work as heat sink ..U can put thermal paste in between CPU and copper tape..
Check it out

Thanks a bunch! That's the exact video I've been watching and the most helpful too. I am just not sure if there are different sizes in thickness that are more conducive or not. Also, are there different strengths of copper to resist higher temperatures? I'm learning all of this through google, so I'm sure I sound as savvy as I am with technology.

Sorry to hear that, but yes I feel every G4 will suffer the same fate as in your case. Once it starts it won't keep running forever.
Yes the camera is awesome. The no.1 reason I love the G4 and no.2 reason is the textured leather curved back cover which makes holding the G4 very easy in the hand to manage, as it is a big phone. I was going to go with the G5 when my G4 died as it has the same camera but I really don't think it's as special as the G4. I picked up a new secondhand G4 with a serial number of 701 so I'm hoping the fault has been resolved in the newer version.
I'm not totally optimistic it wont suffer from the same problem in time though as I do feel it gets very hot that one can feel on the back cover . And the heatsink over the soc is virtually non existent in comparison to a Galaxy S6 I owned briefly which had a much more capable heat sink on it. I'm hoping the heatsink is not the problem and it was purely the chip itself, but I don't know for sure. I stuck a copper shim on the soc with some thermal paste anyway just in case, couldn't hurt.
I'd suggest to anyone who like me loves the G4 then picking up a newer version with a serial number of 701 or above might not be a bad idea instead of messing around with a clearly faulty one that will fail on you possibly at a highly inconvenient moment.

so..
i bought a G4 H812 canadian off Kijiji (our local buy and sell like craigs list kinda thing) $50 no battery stuck in HS-USB 9008.
invested another $22 in a battery from a friend. now total invested into a possible bricked device... $72.. not to bad, a risk yes... but i had luck and confidence!
excellent screen scratch wise but had delamination all around the screen (see pic 1)
so with a half charged new battery, a possible bricked g4, and some previous knowledge and repair skills, i went to work.
tried QPST... nadda. tried LGUP... nadda. tried lg flashtool... guess what.. yup.. nothing... felt like friends repair shop was last left option...
but im a scrooge, and determined
so i took to youtube and google, found out it may have been one of a possible recall phones that had the thermal bootloop issue or emmc failure..
grabbed my custom heatgun and blasted it at 275 for 3min..

It has been six months, does your lg g4 still working?
