Modification request: long press keyboard letter to dial favorite contact - G2 and Desire Z General

Hey xda devs, I love my new G2 but I'm not a fan of voice dial or scrolling through contacts. On my old Blackberry I could just long press a keyboard letter to dial an assigned contact. Could we have this functionality cooked into a future rom, pretty please? Thanks!

why would you slide open your keyboard or even bring up the virtual keyboard to make a phone call?

Because it would be incredibly easy to pop the phone open with my thumb, press one key to dial someone, then pop it closed and start talking. I just timed myself doing this and it took about one second to do one handed. This would be very useful while driving, carrying groceries, fumbling for keys, etc. Good enough for you?

Use the frav in contacts. Just add the ppl you call most, that way u just hit dail then frav. Then select contact. They will be grouped together so its easy to find. But what u r asking for is speed dail I know senes has it but im sure there is a market app for it

Yeah, looking for speed dial using keyboard only. Don't want to swipe to unlock the phone or tap the screen at all. Maybe there is an app for this...let's go look.

Long pressing menu button brings up search instead of just keyboard?

Is this just me or anyone else? Back on my N1 it would bring up the keyboard on top of any screen/app I was on.. On my Vibrant it brings up a search screen with the keyboard..
This disables me being able to use Swype's cursor menu for selecting text, copying/pasting. I don't know if anyone else uses it like that?
On the Swype keyboard, swype from the tips key to the sym key, left to right.

Reading comprehension fail.
He's problem is that a search field opens with a long press of the menu key, making the swype arrow keys useless when you want to use them outside of a text field.

More like a misunderstanding, douche.
He's out of luck though, since like he said long press of menu only brings up search, not the keyboard like the N1. I believe they did this because you international Galaxy S didn't have a search button, so to take its place they made it available by a long press of the menu. Though, I don't know why they didn't remove that on our T-Mobile Vibrant since we already have a separate button for it.

I have this same problem and it's extremely annoying. This phone is full of bugs. Thankfully we have XDA and it's only a matter of time before we get bug fixes.

Vocabulary fail.
Last time I checked, misunderstanding what someone wrote = not comprehending what was read.
I was just joking anyways.
Have fun calling me names like a kid, pointing out typos (a typo on xda?! whaaaat?!), just next time actually RTFA.
Thanks for the insightful responses my fellow Vibranteers. Lol.
I agree it's pretty annoying. A friend was trying an older Android app that assumes you have a physical keyboard, and as a result, there is no way to force the soft keyboard to open.
You have to wonder how Samsung concluded the search button wasn't adequate for accessing search...
Menu lp for me is the keyboard, as it should be for everyone. Lp search is a choice of with vlingo or google voice search.
lp menu for me is search also......very very annoying!
For me as well... (I'm on stock TW)
Menu LP brings up the keyboard -- and the quick-search box in the top half of the screen.
Anybody figure out how to chnge this behaviour?
I have Button-Shorcut set to go to dialer with LP. As there is no hardware phone button,.SP search. + KB. I wish this app was able to map menu button that would be great.
Is your phone Loki? Use Odin. You'll be Thor!
I asked Steve Jobs and he told me that you guys are long pressing the button wrong

backspace deleting entire text message

Does anybody else hate it when you press the fn key and try to correct something by pressing backspace and the whole message gets deleted? Any way to turn that feature off? It has happened to me way too many times now.
You might be able to edit the keyboard mappings to do this, but I don't have any experience in that area.
I just have gotten into the habit of holding modifier keys instead of tapping before the next key.
Sorry your a step ahead of me...... I have been wondering why my message gets wiped every so often..... must be the fn thing...... I thought i was going crazy

sometimes you are typing fast and then you try to add a question mark or something. you make a mistake and it still has that FN command blinking and you don't notice...you press backspace and bye bye to your whole message.
While were talking about keyboard issues here (since I couldn't really find another place to ask) does anyone know how to "select all" which would normally be ctrl + A, for the epic. I was using gmail and wanted to delete "all" my spam mail at once instead of one by one. I know it something I did on my N900 easily due to the physical keyboard but after reading through the keyboard shortcuts from Cnet I didn't see this particular shortcut listed.

Happens to me at least once a day. Would love to see it go. : )

Thanks for replying, I tried to long press on the screen in gmail but it only selects the the email I tap and when I long press the actual label for spam it doesn't do anything. I guess regular pc keyboard shortcuts aren't available with the keyboard on the epic, which is unfortunate... I love the keyboard though.

fn backspace
Any one have any news on this issue, regarding turning off the FN+backspace = erasing an entire line?
It happens to me AT LEAST once a week, but it's gotten old really fast. I agree with several users...it's just a function I don't need and end up accidentally deleting lines as a result. If I could just turn it off, I'd be MUCH happier than wishing it was there since I never use it.
Whether it's a setting or even an app or add-on that can help I'd appreciate it.
As much as I love the Epic overall, and I may well be in the minority on this one, but even months into owning it the biggest thing that screws me up continually coming from my previous keyboard phone is the placement of the Fn key to begin with. If I had designed this phone, the Fn and Shift keys would be interchanged position wise with the Fn key the one in the very bottom left corner.
It happened to me with droidx multitouch kb installed

Power button for call answer?

Is there a mod or an app that allows use of one of the physical buttons to answer and end a phone call? Capacitive screens don't work with gloves, so to answer I always have to take my hand out and that's troublesome.
I never realized how much of a difference physical buttons make during winter time and Nor' Easter's

And to kill 2 birds with one stone...is there a mod that will allow me to type someones name in the dialer when I have the keyboard open? I think its stupid to only be able to use the 10 digits to type someones name out when I have all 26 letters at my disposal..
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Instead of hitting phone and trying to type their name you could hit search and type it.
i like that idea... i've missed a few calls trying to answer my phone with gloves on

Yes, you can type out the first name of the person you want to call (on the touchscreen dialpad, im going to try the physical right now)
Edit : nevermind, doesnt work with the physical keyboard, you probably knew that. Sorry for the misunderstanding

I know this isn't the question you asked, but it might be a solution... there is a mod you can do to your gloves to make it work
Cut a small piece from a static shielding bag (the kind a hard drive or motherboard gets shipped in), cut a small piece (5mm x 5mm possibly, may need to experiment) and glue it to the fingertip of your glove. When done, you will have turned the finger of your glove into a capacitive stylus, and you will no longer need to remove your gloves to use your phone.
Apart from that, if you are running a Froyo rom, you can set the powerkey to end your call, but dont know of anything to answer your call. To set it to end your call, go into your settings menu, go down to accessibility, if a box pops up saying no accessibility applications found, just hit cancel, then check the box next to 'The power key ends calls'.
A while back this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849075) was posted as an instruction to get the power button to end calls on pre-Froyo ROM's. I'll bet there is some way to map that key to do what you want, but I don't know what you would replace "power" with...
I experimented with it just now by changing it to "call" (as found in the qwerty.kl file) but that didn't work.
Perhaps a Google search on epic key mappings might turn up the "command" that you'd need to manually associate with key 58.
Try Tedds droid tools its free in the market. It allows camera button to answer calls.

Cannot see text in landscape

I am very much beginning to love the MT4G. There's one thing that's really bugging me. I've tried numerous keyboards but when I go to type a text or email in landscape, the stupid bar which has three options (Send, Save As, or Discard) block the view of what is being typed.
I cannot type in portrait mode because my fingers are too fat. I want to see what I'm typing. There would be plenty of room to see the text if the aforementioned bar were gone. It's not necessary because on can hit the menu button to get those options.
Is there a way to get rid of the bar so one can see what they are typing? Is there a keyboard which allows one to see what they are doing?
I don't see what you see, but I'm using better keyboard 7.

You mean in the email client
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Yes, I mean in both the stock email and texting programs. I'm using the Better Keyboard program also. The text space is mostly blocked by the menu bar for Send, Save As, or Discard. This is senseless because all those options and more are one fingerpress away by hitting the menu button. When typing, I can barely see the top of what I'm typing.
This is frustrating because I use my mobile device to answer email from 3 accounts. This is the biggest flaw with this device. The other flaws are the lousy indoor pictures and the screen size. I would have made it at least 4" but would have preferred 4.3".

Are you rooted so you can use shoot me to take a screen cap? I have no idea what menu you are talking about. If you're rooted are you running a custom ROM?
I've attached a screen cap so you can see what I do on my phone.
Catastrophic, thanks for the post. I'm not rooted. My screen looks just like yours except that I've got a bar with send, save as, and discard covering up the top white portion of the screen where the text you're typing is displayed. There's got to be some setting where that bar can be disabled.

Sounds Like a glitch to me. THe only thing thats a pain in the ass to me is you cant see the convo window while yoeur typing lol.

Trackpad sleep??

Is this possible by any means??
What I mean is we have trackpad wake, which is nice. But is there anything we can do so that when you long press the trackpad it locks the phone? Just an idea I've had floatin around..

Huh? How would this make the phone easier to unlock on your pocket? I think you misunderstand. The OP is asking about a feature to LOCK/SLEEP the phone using the trackpad button. Did you think he meant wake/unlock the phone?
A mod to wake the phone with the trackpad button already exists, and its pretty awesome. It turns on the screen, but does not unlock the phone, same as the "normal" power button. You still have to swipe to unlock. And doing so in your pocket is very unlikely.
Ahh u are correct....I mis-read his post. My apologies to the OP and its actually a pretty good idea!

Can take over the default long-press of the search button. And if your running CM7 you can change the search button to launch the app, so no need for a long press
Remap the trackpad press to the power button.
IE - it becomes the power button, you could then change the power button to something like Play/Pause, Trackpad, etc.
It will still boot with the power button, a remap only affects the Android system.
