Trackpad sleep?? - G2 and Desire Z General

Is this possible by any means??
What I mean is we have trackpad wake, which is nice. But is there anything we can do so that when you long press the trackpad it locks the phone? Just an idea I've had floatin around..

Good idea but the phone would unlock easier in ur Pocket...not a big fan of Pock Dialing - I'll stick to the OldSchool Method on this one...

Huh? How would this make the phone easier to unlock on your pocket? I think you misunderstand. The OP is asking about a feature to LOCK/SLEEP the phone using the trackpad button. Did you think he meant wake/unlock the phone?
A mod to wake the phone with the trackpad button already exists, and its pretty awesome. It turns on the screen, but does not unlock the phone, same as the "normal" power button. You still have to swipe to unlock. And doing so in your pocket is very unlikely.

Ahh u are correct....I mis-read his post. My apologies to the OP and its actually a pretty good idea!

Can take over the default long-press of the search button. And if your running CM7 you can change the search button to launch the app, so no need for a long press

Remap the trackpad press to the power button.
IE - it becomes the power button, you could then change the power button to something like Play/Pause, Trackpad, etc.
It will still boot with the power button, a remap only affects the Android system.

configure optical button

Is there a way to configure the optical button on the htc incredible so that clicking it wakes the phone up (like pressing the top button)? I'm looking for functionality thats a little bit similar to how the iphone wakes up since I find that button at the bottom much more accessible than the button on the top.
id be interested in this as well. The top button isnt very intuitive to me
Search the market for "lock screen" or "lockscreen" or just "lock" (or maybe "button"? I thought there was a button switcher app too).
Many of the 3rd party lock apps will bring up the lock screen by pressing one or more of the physical buttons (volume, camera, etc). I bet at least one of them comes on with the optical button.
it has been done on the nexus one with the trackball. i think you need root access or at lease custom rom.
Ok, I found this.

Try the "lockbot" app. It is probably about all that is available right now, but the Incredible will be extremely popular. There will be more hacks/tweaks/apps/whatever for this device than any to date, I suspect.

"myLock" in advance mode.
Great app, and thank you for the info. I was looking the same solution.
Mylock works great. Although I did have one occurence of it locking up the phone.

Are you talking about the app called myLock auto unlock? I am not finding an advanced mode or way to get in advanced mode. Care to explain a little more? and this is able to make it so you can use the trackpad to wake/unlock the phone?
NoLock works for this as well but I wish there was a way to allow the optical pad to work without allowing the volume buttons to work at the same time.
Tried myLock just now and both seem like good apps.

App to Lock the Screen

Back in the dark days when I had an iPhone there was an app called QuickLock. By touching it, it would shut the screen off the same as hitting the power button on the Galaxy S. Does anyone know of or better yet tried an app that does this?
Thanks
Even better to me is to emulate what "activator" in iPhone could do, which allows users to configure their preferred gesture for blanking the screen. I chose to slide my finger from the home button up. This method is superior to pressing the button as in Quicklock because it does not require the user to come to the desktop to look for the icon. In other word, you can enter off the screen from anywhere. I like it especially on my iPad, because the case is designed in a way that makes pressing the power button a little difficult to effect.

Unlock device App idea

So i dont no how to write apps but i have a great idea that maybe someone here can work on.
when the phone is locked and the screen is off its a little inconvienet to press the on/off button on the top of the phone to unlock the device.
so how about if there was way to swipe across the four buttons (home, menu, back, and search) at the bottom and unlock the device liek that.
i would really like that and i think so woulda alota other peepz
They're capacitive buttons they won't register touches without the screen being on

I love peepz, they are delicious. Especially the yellow ones.
Awesome idea. I'm steer there had to be some way to get it to work. Might consider making a request thread in the dev forum and see what people say. You could always hit the power button to wake up the phone just like normal unlock then use the bottom buttons to unlock like you said. Either way, cool idea.

I'm on stock GB right now from telus... but when I do this my screen just shuts off. Same thing happened on froyo. Realy wish I could figure this out, eliminate the need of an app.
Thx

Maniac - I believe you and I have the exact same configuration at this point. The other day I took 2 screen-shots - was pretty sure it was a double tap on home (I have the screen-shots saved in the gallery under screen-capture). For the life of me, I CANNOT replicate the behaviour - this has happened to me a few times.
Appears like the guts of doing it is in Android, but you sometimes just trip over the functionality every now and again. Not sure why they keep missing this one, seems like an obvious feature.

Thanks for the reply, I've never got it to work. Ever. So now that I know it is possible, I'm going to try to figure this out. It would be awesome, very simple, but awesome.
I will report back if I make any progress.

Do the telus roms include a (I may be wrong on the name) ScreenCaptureService.apk within system/app? Because that was needed for the above mentioned methods of stock froyo screen capture.
good day.
yea I do have that file in gingerbread, had it in froyo as well. I don't think it has anything to do with screencapture as such. I copied the file to my pc, extracted it and it contains a couple common .xml you find in all APK's and shutter1.ogg file. Which I'm thinking is the sound for the camera.
I've looked through the manual and I couldn't find anything about taking screenshots.
I bet if it can be done it's going to turn out to be something so small and easy.. that's always the way these things work out.
Maybe menu and down thats miui shortcut I believe

As of right now I have 43 unwanted screen captures. All from just pressing the power button alone. LAME!! and more so annoying because the screen won't turn off unless you back out of an app.

I'm on official 2.2
For me to screen capture I have to hold the back button until it vibrates (like one second) and THEN press the power button while continuing to hold the back button.
Works every time for me. Some applications don't handle it well and the long hold of the back button takes you up one level...

I am on ccampos's PWGB beta 3 and it works the exact same way for me. Long press on the back button and a quick click of the power button.
On Gummy GBE I hold the back button and press the home button. The quality of the screen grabs is lower than drocap though.
Sorry for the upcoming caps.. but besides a video I can't get my point across any other way...
I"VE TRIED EVERYTHING.. to get a screenshot working without 3rd party app. Maybe I'm nuts, but, this is just something that is bugging me for some time now.. since 2.2... I won't stop until I figure it out.

[WHINE] – Why a hardkey instead of softkey for “home” button

I don't like the hardkey. It feels different to press than a softkey. It takes longer to press and takes me out of my rythm. Therefore I tend not to use it as much (have built some alternate shortcut gestures into my launcher and my Notification Toggle setup).
Also from what I have seen softkeys last longer than hardkeys... the softkeys have no mechanical parts to wear out.
The whole thing bugs me, but I think I'd feel better if I understood WHY this design decision was made...
So can anyone explain the ADVANTAGES of having a hardkey home button?

I prefer a hard key for the exact opposite of what you said.
BTW, why do you own a S4 ???
The day I cant buy an Android phone with a real home button will be the day Ill switch to something else.
Switching from the straight talk galaxy S2 to the S4 took me a bit to get use to as the S2 didn't have a hard key.... but I like the hard key better.... I think its more of a personal preference than anything

I miss the HTC Amaze.. Power, camera, and volume were the only buttons on the phone.
I miss the smooth glass home button at the bottom of the screen between the menu and back buttons
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Softkey takes screen real estate, but, will relocate landscape to portrait. When a major crash occurs softkey will not work. Softkey is more suscptable to accidental presses.
Hardkey has a completely different tactile feel.
This is one of many reasons why I prefer Samsung to Nexus. Each to their own.

I love being able to wake the screen with the menu button. This is much easier when using a case.

First of all, welcome to the late party.
Second, I hated the hard key also.
Now though, I love the fact that I can "feel" the key without looking for it.
Guess I'd rather have a capacitive key still, but it would need to be a raised button that I can "feel".

It's amazing how there is no one feature that can please everyone.
I actually have that option disabled on my phone.
Drives me nuts because everytime I pick up my phone, I'd accidentally press that button and the phone would turn on. Or when I wipe down my screen, I'd hit that button and with the next wipe, I'd unlock my phone and inadvertently open an app or something. hahah

Unfortunately, that's about 90% of the threads in this particular forum now.
My bad. I'm new to S4. I didn't search but got the whim to express some frustration in what I thought would be a light-hearted conversational thread. Not the best decision in retrospect. Next time I'll do that on the Off-topic Cafe thread when I get that urge.
I think a big plus of using both a hard key and the touch sensitive keys (I really dislike the soft keys taking screen real estate, if they disappeared for full screen applications, I'd be more supportive – but I digress) is just being able to feel where the touch sensitive keys are without having to look at the phone. Long live the hard key
