Jumping Ship - XPERIA X10 General

Hi All
Not the most active poster on these boards, but I do pay a close eye to what's going on and get my regular updates from xperiax10.net
As the title suggests I'm moving on, as much as it pains me and no doubt many wont care and might flame me but hey I thought I would take the time to wish you all well. I'm not going because of the length of time its taken for the updates to come out or because of broken promises. I'm off because of the in call volume (or lack of).
Anyway, there was another reason for me writing this post, seeing as I wont have an x10 from tomorrow that leaves me with a single clear-coat screen protector which I'm not going to be able to use. I'm not interested in selling it, but if someone was willing to make a generous donation to ELF then please can you pm me and the first to do so, then send me proof of their donation can have the clear-coat (please don't go donating till I have pm'ed you back).
Anyway I wish you all the best, and I hope that SE pull their finger out for their next android phone, the X10 has so much potential locked away in it.
Peace out

Should I carry on with Touch-Innovation

Hey,
Some of you may know the website: www.touch-innovation.com
I'm not going to advertise it's features - because that's not what I'm here for.
I'm basically wondering if anyone still uses it, or would still use it. And whether it warrants mine and others time to get it running properly again.
I've neglected it the past few months, mainly because of my work, i'm only 16 and my GCSE's are a month or 2 away. So it's a big time.
I think I can get it going again, make it more popular, get more programs etc. But only if people will use it. So do you think it's worth my valuable time at the moment?
And if there's anyone willing to help out, if you think it's worth it, now the time is to ask.
Thanks guys
Wonderful effort esspecially considering your age and other commitments.
I personally believe if you can do it and get high grades then do, but remember your GCSEs are very important university's and colleges will look at them and even more so employers. So be wise .
I'm in uni so I talking from my own experience know how important GCSEs can be to "success" then and "success" later.
Hey Napbree
It is a wonderful site and you can find all finger touch applications for PPC. I think that you should continue with the site and if you need any help in maintaining "Count Me In"
Well, i keep visiting it every week because it has good info.
Cheers mate.

exactly....the GCSEs are definitely what should be more important for you right now, whether that means to take a break from the site or to shut it down completely for the time being.....
Education should definately be the prioriy. But i also think you should try to keep the site going and let us help you in anyway we can. Ill start adding and updating software today. Maybe getting a few more people on board would help us out also?. Touch innovation has come along way, and it would be great to see it continually get better. But again, your future comes first. Thanks for letting me help on your site N.
dschoenike (Derek)
This is a Dev Related forum and this thread doesent belong here
(joking..) i agree with them, Studies first, later you'll have all the time for this
I agree with the rest. I'm in college right now and I can tell you, you will need good marks especially if your going to an institute. You've made a great site at an age that not many people (myself included) would even try to create much less maintain. School comes first though and trust me getting good on those GCSEs will help you immensely.
Im not sure of whats all involved with maintaning a website technically-wise, but could you like, put someone else in charge of it while you're taking care of more important priorities? My apologies for a probably silly question, but im just trying to help ya figure out keeping touch innovation going. Love that site
dschoenike
is tha site gone ? im geting: " Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '?' in /home/.axle/brennn/mobile.touch-innovation.com/index.php on line 1358 " When trying to access... dont think iv ever been to tha site.. will keep an eye out 2 see if it comes back..
Lol, the site works mate.. and its a very good site mind you, its just a little clustered like this forum on occasions and just needs some more organisation but none the less its definitely worth while if you can get each developer to post there apps there.
Also.. when did this forum become boredofstudies.org? O_O
Sorry for the mobile.touch-innovation.com, my error. Fixed now.
I think i've decided that because of all the work i've put into the site (site is coded from base up, not based upon anything.) and that I had already started another beta (where the design was re-hauled, and a load of new features + orginisation filters etc) that I am going to carry it on, but not let it take priority. So when I have 5-10 mins, I'll just code some more, or optimise it etc. After I;ve finished all of my c/w of course.
Any suggestions, and anyone looking to help out, post in here, and I'll get to you at some point. I;m off to bed, night

thanks for this cool site

i would like to help maintain it im a senoir in high school and i need more experience for college so if you need help contact me
i think you need to delegate some of the duties of the website. but i generaly like the layout and have used it befor
nice effort keep it up
shouldn't GCSE be year end, or is it not?
Regardless, I agree with the rest, that your studies is more important at this point. It's always good to venture into something you like, above studies, but when it comes to examination like GCSE, you just have to priortise them accordingly.
The thing is, windows mobile plan to release a online store for all win mobile applications, so that means my little revenue will drop even more. And my laptop has now broke.. Not good.
Site is not working anymore, so was the decision to focus on education made and the site shut down?

Android on the Samsung Omnia!

Hey People!
I've got a Samsung Omnia and I would really really like to have Android on the Omnia, but unfortunately I'm not really technical enough to be able to port Android to the Omnia myself. Searching on the net for an 'installer of android' I saw that I am not the only one wanting this, so I decided to start an initiative; www.AndroidOmnia.com
The person or organisation who manages to get Android working on the Samsung Omnia will get all the money that we are able to bring together. We currently have $276.43 contributed by people who also want Android on the Omnia. We hope that this incentive will get more developers to devote some energy to it!
Of course we are looking to raise a lot more money since all that hard developing work should be rewarded! So If you also support this cause please visit www.AndroidOmnia.com and contribute some money as well!
Looking forward to get Android on my Omnia!
This is a great Idea!
But i have a question:
While reading the "Rules" i was wondering there is no "Timeline".
(or i just didnt read carefully?)
If no one is contributing an Android-Port in the next Years, what will you do with the Money? Buy the new Samsung Android-Phone for yourself?
Maybe you should set a Date until it should be delivered and if the date passed without an Android-Port, donators get most of their money back. (of course there are some transfer-costs)
If you do so, i will donate something too.
@ z3ntn3l
That is indeed a valid point. I didn't really think of that. I just figured it must happen sometime or another..
I'll add it to the website as soon as I have some more time for it. What kind of timeline do you think is reasonable. 1 year? 6 months?
So there is actually people working on this? You can't really make a timeline if you dont have a developer or a team of people working from one repository.
Well yeah. I agree. That is why I didn't set a timeline in the beginning. But since z3ntn3l said that would be better I was thinking it would be nice to the people who donate money.
On the other side, it would be bad as well if a person or organisation is working hard to get things going and they miss the deadline. I would then already have paid all the money back to the people who contributed and the person developing would be left with nothing.
I think it is better that I don't set a timeline at this point. If nothing really seems to be happening after more than half a year I will be more than happy to pay the money back to the people who contributed. I hope this will give you enough security to contribute anyway z3ntn3l..
Are there for the rest any tips how I can get this more in the publicity or anything else..? I would love to get into contact with people who are interested in porting Android..
well, i think six months is a good date.
If there is a serious developer/project who needs more time, can contact you and you can post that info on your site.
by the way, where are you from? Europe/U.S.?
by the way 2: wrote this from my Omnia
Six months could maybe be a good time. But I guess what I'll do is put a line in the FAQ that in the case of an absence of activity on this project after a reasonable time (6 months), all contributors will get their money back. Would that be friendly to both developers and contributors?
btw. I am from the Netherlands..
How about this article?
I also wanted to know how to flash omnia windows mobile os to android.
And, I searched this article now, but I don't know this is possible.
I don't have omnia phone now..but maybe some weeks later, I could have it.
So, could you test this article? It is below.

Was there something I missed?

Whats up with all the devs bailing out? Not to mean that in a bad way, I appreciate all of yalls hard work dont get me wrong!
because many people believe that its wrong to donate to a developer who spends so much time working on a rom to get an early release even though they know that they will get it free after a few days.
because people don't have patience.
because people don't appreciate others' works.
because people think that they DESERVE everything that they want and will whine if they don't get it.
because people are ignorant.

I really dont understand why it is a bad thing to donate. its just like anything else that is made out there, Just be glad they arent charging you for this stuff. They do it out of there free will. People that want to bit*h about this kinda stuff should be banned.
this donation crap shouldn't have even been allowed now look what's happening.

Ok so if you go buy a car, you dont want someone to fix it when its broke
Same thing you go by a phone, You want to make it better Right? And for free? Ok well if you want to thank them then you can donate to them.
The whole donating thing you dont have to do it. All the roms will be released to the public, just the people that have donated get a early copy...So what are you actually compliang about with the donations thing here?

The devs didn't write the software in the rom. They pieced together stuff from other roms. It's not their software. If people want to donate for the customization, fine, but it's not right to charge for other people's hard work. This sort of thing is what will give HTC / Google the ability to start sending DMCA's.
Charging is the difference between sex and prostitution.

See I never saw it as them charging for the software, the people who donate get first look the people who didnt still get it. At no point have they said that there was a fee for this software, only if you appreciated the time they have taken and donated, you get first look. Similar to the manner in which HTC was supposed to release the kernel, they released it to sprint first then eventually the general public. Doesnt seem like linux issued a gpl violation against them to stop selling their devices

i havent posted about all this drama since im new, but it seems you are the only person with some form of logic. i get both sides of the argument, but instead of asking for donations to get a early release why not just ask for them to just email you? i understand it takes time for flipz to send the rom to everyone, and everyone knows time is money, he should get something for his work, but i dont think asking for a donation for early release is the right way to get it.
most likely he doesnt even want nothing for his work cuz this is a open source community and he just wanted a way to get testers so he can release a more complete rom for all of us, im sure if he knew it was going to be such a problem on the forums he wouldnt have bothered to do the donation thing for an early version. The donations is voluntary but then again u are "Forced" to donate if u want a early version. i fail to see how that is different from buying something that i want. sure it might come out later for free, but right now the only way to get it is to donate/buy it.
munchies!!!
im in no way trying to offend any of the devs, you guys are amazing and i very thankfull for all the work that you guys do. im just giving my meaningless(this is the internet afterall) opinion from the outside looking in.

He never asked for donations for an early release. People volunteered donations for an early release. He gave the early release to donators from his last ROM. People got excited and started sending him donations so that they could get it. Flipz never asked them to. The beta release is unfinished and very buggy. You don't have to have it if you can wait a few days so that he can fix the bugs.
from a social psych perspective, having donations tied quid pro quo for something not everyone has the equal availability to experience is essentially going to diminish both sides of the equation here. Flipz will potentially look at the screaming rise in donations in anticipation of redeeming much of his hard earned time and effort in the form of monetary donations. Likewise, from the user perspective - many of you have already donated to get into that early release pool and sign off on the matter by claiming that flipz deserves the donation anyway.
with all the legalities aside here, and focusing solely on what an early release of flipz's rom being given to those who contribute monetary donations, there is no difference in my purchasing of a new microwave at the local sears and my donating to flipz with the added benefit of being sent an insider's link to the current unreleased firmware.
no matter how you flip it, or spin it, what it comes down to regardless of the point of view is preferential treatment. if flipz wants to make some money back on his time spent, as well as his bandwidth costs, this is the most legal way he can do it tbh. but if flipz wants this to be considered "free" for all intensive purposes, then there would be no early release to those who donate. its not free and/or open-source when the availability of the item is discriminated against those who do not donate.
on this last note, flipz will inevitably succumb to "every man has his price". the majority of the devs with blockbusting roms around here deserve their own subforum dedicated to how awesome they are for contributing to this community. I applaud them wholeheartedly. when the factor of money comes into the picture, there are very few people who will not be aroused financially by what people are willing to shell out for. The enthusiasm that we see from a dev who ties money directly into the release of his or her roms will virtually never be the same as one who accepts donations without an added incentive to his or her userbase.
bottom line, i think flipz made the wrong choice on both ends of the equation here. there is now a monetary factor that cannot be overlooked in the impending releases of all future "fresh" roms if nothing is changed. And for that I simply refuse to take part in any of these releases where there is a two-way transaction of goods regardless of the context.
I don't see how hall are not getting this flips donators are essentially his beta testers he's not giving them a finished Rom he's simply doing his thing realesing to donators to test out. They send feedback he fixes and BAM!!! public release with most of The bugs worked out.... how are yall not understanding that
I'm new and can't see the forest through the trees. But I do worry about what will happen when the official 2.1 is released by sprint. Could it be a total unrooting and lock-out?
Just because you charge for something doesnt mean its not open source. Free as in speech, not beer.
This thread keeps rolling downhill, but I see something that needs clarification. Flipz has NEVER EVER asked for a donation OK. Read it again, internalize it. NEVER EVER. You don't like the donation sh*t??? Don't donate and be happy with it. In about 2-4 days, you will have an updated software release after some people have found some bugs and some of them have been fixed. NO ONE is requiring a donation it is completely VOLUNTARY. No one will die for waiting about 4 days for a ROM (although some people sound like they will). Get a grip people. This is very simple.
On top of all this! people donate to him .. but how much do you need to give him? No he did not say... I could had paid .25 and still get it before anyone else..so please STFU!

People ripping off the devs here

So its come to my attention after looking at craigslist for a new phone, that people are ripping off the devs hard work HERE and charging 30 dollars to put android on peoples HD2's heres a link to one of them.
http://charlotte.craigslist.org/mob/2123304749.html
I dont know about everyone here, but i think this forum is about sharing info an having fun with it, Not letting these hilljacks make money off what the hard working devs here have put their time an sweat into.. If anyone should be gettin the 30 dollars it should def be the devs here. I just wanted to bring this to everyones attention an feel free to reply to his post an let him know what you think Merry christmas everyone
It happens with everything, it is a natural fact of life, get over it.
happens ALL the time, this was going on back when I had my old HTC Trinity and people were selling Dev's Windows Mobile ROMS as their own on places like craigslist.
It's low, it's unfair, it's basically sh*tty, but there's very little we can do about it because so many people do it.
Legally, only Google can do something about it because they're selling a product that isn't theirs. Though then you get into the grey area that they're actually selling a SERVICE not the product...

My understanding too...
See thats what i thought too, but looking at all the diff post from the same guy hes doing iphone jailbreaking an unlocking for 10 dollars, i dont see how puttin a folder on a SD card makes a 20 dollar price spike, but thats just me
Theres a lot of people out there who do not have the time or the brains to read through all the guides on how to get android on your HD2. It took me about 2 days and over 8 hours to figure out how to get android on my HD2.
I contemplated having someone do it for me, but realized, much like building my first PC, it's a better experience to learn it all myself.
I agree with Antimus - he's not ripping anyone off.
He's not claiming he made the software, and he's not selling the software.
He's got knowledge and experience that not everyone has, and is offering that as a service to people who want android on their phone, but without the bother of figuring it out themselves.
However, he's only able to do this due to other people's hard work, so it'd be fair of him to donate a bit of his proceeds to those who made it possible for him to offer the service in the first place.
Payments to Devs by people like this could never be enforced, so if you want to make sure the Devs benefit, offer your own service at $25, and give $3 to the devs each time you make a sale
On the surface this seems like a bit of a ripoff. But the simple fact is that many people do not want to tinker with their phones the way all us forum types do.
I can compare this service to a guy who came round to "fix" my Mum's computer (unfortunately she lives in a different country otherwise I would have done it!). He charged her £20 to do a defrag!!! BUt, as my Mum pointed out, her computer worked better afterwards and she would not have known what to do so she was happy.
Much as it seems like the hard work of our XDA devs is being used as a means for other people to make a bit of cash on the side, I don't think it is quite "ripping them off".
I tend to agree with the others, the example given is for the service and he's not claiming to be a dev or selling the software itself. The same argument could be applied with a lot of what goes on in this website. A lot of the devs use other peoples work to creat their own builds.
I agree he should at least credit those who put the build together but there is nothing in the advert saying he is not doing that anyway.
People tend to forget that you do need some technical knowledge to use this website, and that there are many people out there that would be willing to pay a "man-with-screwdriver) to just do all the technical stuff for them. Very enterprising.
I wanna see, how she will install android on a HD2
NAND isn't there thought.
Think she will get problems, if costumers restart the phone and see WM booting.
Knowledge is power! No one is ripping no one off. If Dev's didn't want there knowledge passed on they would not post it for public use. Unfortunately some people just don't have the brain capacity to mod there own smart phones. Its the same with computers...U can download win7 from practically anywhere for free online but people would pay some guy (geek) to install it on his pc for money. Or how bout Modding game consoles (xbox, ps3, dsi, psp) for money. Its NOT the product there selling, Its the service and knowledge...dam 30bucks, wonder how much he charges to upgrade kernel
Welcome to the free world of internet where knowing makes you MONEY!
If you search, there's one of these posts every month or so.... Read there, find the same conclusions as will be posted here.
Moved to Android General Discussion. As long as this discussion stays civil, I'll allow the thread to remain open. If it gets carried away, I'll be forced to close it.
That being said, this is a VERY common problem and yes these guys do tend to get away with it. I will agree though that getting Android up and running was one of the harder things I did when I first started. I was a seasoned ROM "cook" but couldn't for the life of me figure out why Android was so unstable or why it wouldn't boot. Now I'm pretty savvy with it and I can manipulate it to do just about whatever I want. A lot of people don't want to go through what I did and so if they have the money, a lot of them ARE willing to pay. I have a friend who is a truck driver who had a Sprint Touch(Vogue) and he paid me to update it every time he was in town(It was always a "Hey thanks Dan!", it was never asked of him to pay me). I'd put a new ROM on it, restore his contacts, set up his email, etc.. He was a happy guy.
There's a lot of people like this out there. Simply put, there's really no way of stopping people who offer these "services" so it's best left alone. People will take every chance they get to capitalize. It doesn't matter if it's their work or not.

ya well if he or she is just putting the android folder on the sd card that is much but if someone that doesnt have a clue on to even turn on there phone that gives them a chance to have android but i am only guessing that its not just that but also a hardslp update rom change an android i mean this all sounds like clock work for us but were geeks to this stuff lol alot of other people are just know they want android an that they have a big screen black thingy phone that has some kind of card that sticks into it lol
I think the difference here is that some people are charging for a service. I'd hope these people give some of the money they make from putting Android on random people's phones to the developers here which have shown continued support for these handsets or done something that has helped them along the way. Or better still to a charity of a devs choice!
I think this can easily be confused with, for example, some f**kwit selling pirated DVDs in a car park. The idiot doing this is making money directly off someone elses back, as opposed to say someone who is sharing a movie for free via BitTorrent; where nobody loses out.
Or, for example, someone puts up an outdoor TV aerial for someone so they can get more Freeview TV channels. They didn't help in the production of the shows or the running of the channels but still, they're providing an indirect service and using their time.
I think because, unlike the BBC and ITV who will always keep Mr. TV installer in some kind of business, the devs here do it for nothing so it would be nice if someone DID make money off flashing a phone or installing Android, they'd give something back to the people who did the hard work for their own free persuit of knowledge and sharing!
The best way, though, is to educate people and get them interested in doing this stuff for themselves. So many people want things spoonfed to them (hence why the iPhone is so popular, and hey, this isn't such a bad thing as most people just want a phone that works and to get on with life, we're in the minority!)
I'd not dream of charging someone for this myself. I'd happily sort a friend out with Android for free or better yet tell them about XDA devs. Done it plenty of times already.

Mercado Livre is a eBay-like website. Yesterday I denounced three offers to "update HD2 with Android"
In both cases, isn´t a simple service, but a copyrighted material, sutffs like iGO GPS Software and others..
Who cares if people are stupid ennough to not realize how easy it is to do then its their own fault... and its not ripping the devastating off for spending their time to do it for you.... its open just like manufactures charge us for the service to repair a phone with google android if it gets messed up... google doesn't get butthurt about them using their os while doing it and charging for it... its called charging for labor not the platform
Sent from my HTC bravo using XDA App
How exactly are they ripping off the devs? They are not stealing from them at all.
They are charging people money for their TIME to put android on their device. It doesn't matter if they just give people the link to this site. People are busy and not everyone is competent enough to take a risk bricking their own phone doing something they have never done before. And Im sure most people dont have the time to sit down and read through all this content to make sure what they are doing is right.
So stop overreacting to this.
OOOOOOOOOK. Time to end this.
Clearly there are different opinions and no single opinion is correct/incorrect in this case. I personally think that it sucks that someone other than the Dev is making money off of something they did for free and shared publicly but at the same time, kudos to the guy who is able to make $20-30 doing a 5 minute job that the guy paying could have done himself for free if he just invested a few hours reading first.
There's no right answer and so this discussion is really only going to end up turning into an argument.

17 May 2011 - HD2 for Sale (Spares or Repair)

Hey forum folks, I'm selling my HD2
]
Sadly, I dropped my HD2 and the screen went *smash!* although, it all still worked. Anyway, this blighted me so I tried to replace the screen with a brand new digitizer/screen replacement combo but I have failed. Despite very carefully taking it all apart and putting it all back together (as per the HTC guides on youtube) I've failed to do a good enough job and the screen now believes I am pressing it when I am not. Anyway, I believe this can be fixed but I don't have the know how or the funds to do it as I am going travelling in a fortnight.
I have therefore taken the v.diff decision to flog my phone so that someone can fix it or use it for spares. As far as I can tell everything is working except for the volume buttons. I think the problem with the volume buttons is that the orange sticker thing might have fallen off and I don't know where to get these replaced?
Anyway, the screen is BRAND NEW; as is the digitizer. The GPS module, battery and camera all work fine so it's an ace little phone that could be easily stripped for spares. I'm giving you guys the chance to get in on the bidding and if you've got any questions I'll answer them right here! So get bidding - oh and the auction opens at 0.99p!!!
I should also add that I don't think this contravenes the forum rules but if it does I beg and plead and grovel in a very humble manner - I only mention it because I know how important these rules are and I know how upset the moderators get with idiots and I am scared I may have stumbled into that category with this posting.
I think you're ok, just post this in the Marketplace next time, maybe a mod can move it for you.
Hi Guys and Gals,
Sorry to bother you all, but just wanted to say that I have been forced to relist my old HD2 after the last auction was won by a massive timewaster who didn't pay up and who wouldn't respond to questions as to the delay.
Anyway, I've relisted the device on e-bay, and you can find it at e-bay.co.uk and the item is ******. I hope that this time someone who actually wants it might win!
Cheers
We have a Marketplace for selling things. And we don't alllow ebay links, as per the forum RULES.
