how do i know how much ram ? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

i have got in my magic?
when i open task killer i see 120 M free when noting is on
when i use memory booster i see total memory 201.875.456 and
free memory 130
and when i enter to the available spave in the setting i see 165
so much much i have?
its version 32a
and i know that its suppose to be
512 rom
and 288 ram
but i dont see 288 in no where
so please help
thanks

strange i download a program that said that in total i have 192 ram
but this version is 32a and what iread its suppose to be with 288 ram
what shell i do ?

htc magic 32a (without google brand) and without 3.5mm jack.
should have 288mb ram.
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
htc magic 32b with google brand and the htc magic 32a with 3.5mm jack, should have 192mb ram.
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H

as you said i should have 288 RAM
but i read that the designs in israel they bring the 192 RAM
and the programs say the same
didnt see even in 1 place any 288 RAM or 512
and its 32A indeed
but everything else match to 192 RAM
lol really dont know what to do
btw
there is even any diffrence betwean the RAM ?
shell normal person that use some programs will feel the DIF?

Not much in difference. Some try different roms to get different speed. Plus all depends on how much Widgets and shortcut you spam your home screen with plus animation backgrounds.
sent from myTouch 3g 1.2 using XDA app

lol noting speical 1.5 android with 192 ram ...
working fine and smooth dont see any problem
but still i am with the origin rom

It is something that has been bugging people for a while but there is a part of the RAM that is "System reserved" and will never show up in any app.
192 mb is the usable RAM on the 32A, the rest is reserved. You could never see 130mb free on a 32B as it only has 96mb of usable memory

ohh nice.
so you say me that normal i have 288 RAM ?
i will be so happy

yes you have 288mb ram, only 192mb is addressable by the OS. the other is used for the system such as the gpu, camera etc etc

nice! thanks
well 192 is enough and sometimes i use the clean rams programs its free alot ram and always use task manager killer
and everytthing working fantasty

Free RAM memory

Hi all,
I started some days ago to tweak my Magic and just installed the Hero image.
Wonderful image, thanx very much to Haykuro!
I'd like to know something more about memory:
adb shell free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 98708 97328 1380 0 8
Swap: 0 0 0
Total: 98708 97328 1380
Shouldn't be 192 MB of ram? what am I missing?

Rest of your memory (about 94Mb) is used by GSM radio, framebuffer. These things are handled on a much lower level which OS can't see.

doesnt the sapphire/magic have 288mb ram total? that is the total according to HTC website, which would mean it should have 192mb usable and the 96mb for everything else

as far as i can tell, the vodaphone magic has 192mb ram, which leaves around 96mb to the user after all the lower level apps has reserved theirs.
and the htc magic has 288mb ram total, which then leaves around ~190mb to the user after the rest was reserved by the system..
correct me if iam wrong

And what the hell is Swap (activated/deactivated)???
sry, but I am new to android, had a trinity before...

You are looking at the internal system memory and not the RAM.
The Voda's are all 192MB editions.
Alternatively do this:
1. Power down your phone
2. Power it on again while pressing both the 'Back' and 'Power' buttons down (keep them pressed)
This will produce a screen with the 3 skating Androids. On the top of this screen you can see what type of board you have
PVT 32A = 288MB
PVT 32B = 192MB
-or read the back of the box it came in

HTC devices and radio ram usage..

From what I've heard on the Dream and magic the radio has around 100 MBs of ram reserved... This is easily twice what I've seen on other phones. Does anyone know what this is about? I've noticed a lot of new android phones that aren't made by htc only have 128 MBs of ram, and I suspect that because their radios eat up less ram they'll actually have a usable amount similar to the dream and 32B magics. Why is htc using up so much memory for this? Could they change this in a update to the radio?
I would like to know...
But maybe some radio chips have their own memory, so no need to share main RAM

32A vs 32B

Hi guys,
I wanted to know which of these versions is better. 32A has more RAM memory, but 32B has better chipset, with 65nm technology, but same speed.
If I could choose, which one should I get? 32A?
Thanks you!
32A have the 7200A CPU and as far as I know it's a 65nm.
From the wiki:
* PVT32A handsets have 288MB total RAM (192MB usable by OS - same as Hero handsets) and use the Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU.
* PVT32B handsets have 192MB total RAM (96MB usable by OS) and use the Qualcomm MSM7201A CPU.

PVT32A should be based on 90nm architecture and PVT32B on 65nm.
I'm not sure if it makes more difference than the RAM size.
dun understand why htc used a poor processor for their newer phones?

I thought they are essentially the same processor but with 65nm technology (which in theory, should consume less power but not sure in this case)?
Speed-wise, is there any differences between the two?

Or why they reduced RAM size on PVT32B devices... They used newev chipset (yhbae01 is right - same speed but less power consumption, and a bit better performance) but reduced RAM...
Anyways, anyone knows answer to my question? Is PVT32A better than PVT32B, and WHY?

You also need to take into account the radio frequencies. As far as I know, the US T-Mobile devices (32B) have less RAM but run on the 1700/2100 MHz 3G frequencies, while the Canadian Rogers devices (32A) have more RAM but run on the 850/1900 MHz 3G frequencies.

Hi,
i am located in the EU and have the possibility to buy either 32A or 32B which supports my 3G network (only from ebay). i found that 32A-s are really rare and are about 1.4x more expensive than 32B-s. its that +~100Mb RAM so important it is worth to pay for? i am a little bit confused till i have read about the swap to SD possibility, the better processor of 32B etc etc. could someone experienced with magic give me a clear understanding on the 'real' difference of the 2 types (i know all the technical specs).
sry for my english

Speed wise I have never heard any discussion of 32A or B being different. Ditto for battery life. The RAM is a the big deal. Lets you run more apps without worrying about swapping. The phone definitely gets slower once it starts swapping apps in and out. If I had the choice I would get the 32A over the B.

Hi,
thank you for the information. So you think i would feel the lack of RAM on 32B... and what about 32A, will it run out of memory sooner or later, or under normal circumstances will it be enough?
thank you in advance

66 apps (assorted games, tools and productivity) and still have 213 Mb available. Apps with really big data requirements (GPS with local maps) tend to have their datasets on the SD card and many apps also use the SD for storage. So I would say you are good for Flash memory space. You could solve this with Apps2SD but most 32A ROM developers s don't see the need/demand.
In terms of running apps, you will notice a slowdown once the RAM gets filled up and swapping becomes an issue. Just install a task manager (liek TasKiller) and kill running apps that you don't need at the time. Once launched, apps continue running until you end them and most apps are designed without a quit/end function so they stay resident in memory.
Oh, C'mon! Doesn't anyone want to field the *real* answer?
If you plan on using a "stock" ROM without the HTC SenseUI, a 32b should be *ok*...
...but if you'd like the option of have SenseUI be lag-free (or more so, anyway) a 32a device is a better option.
Either way, how can you argue *against* the extra RAM?!?!
Here's an example:
I have the option of buy a new PC with either 4GB of RAM or 2GB of RAM...which one is going to feel "snappier" or more responsive?
Answer: the one with more RAM.
I've used a stock T-Mobile G1 to run SenseUI and it was *painful*. The ROM devs have made an insane amount of progress, and I'm sure that HTC has taken advantage of some of that.
I'm now using an HTC Rogers Magic (32a) on AT&T in the U.S...on which Sense runs *much* more smoothly...but I still prefer the Cyanogen ROMs, as they're more responsive still.
(it's for sale, BTW)

Well there is a little more into it than the Rom itself. How many apps and widgets you have running and how much ram consuming is the apps/games you're gonna use. I know that you have have task managers and so on but if i'm a businessman who need and want some apps to be running in the background constantly i would defiantly feel a difference from the 32a and 32b even when running a stock rom without sense UI!
From as far as I have read (hours of googling). both msm7200A and msm7201A are 65nm.
What I have read:
The A is 65nm and non-A is 90nm.
7200 is before the patent issue filed by broadcom and the 7201 has a patent issue workaround.
The workaround has a small performance impact from what I have read.
greets
(p.s. sorry for the bump of this old thread, but I was googling on several overclocks of these cpu's and came across these details as well. So I tought it would be interesting to share ...)

RAM? WTF?

rumours say the ram is 512mb, others say 256mb, some say 192mb, tmobile.com doesnt say anything..
does anyone have an answer for me? this is a perfect phone, the htc magic with a flashlight, 3.5mm jack, and a keyboard plus it works with wind mobile in canada..
but i dont want a slow device, 32b magic boards are terribly slow with just 192mb and my 32a magic is pretty decent with 256..if this device has 600mhz processor with 512mb ram then it should be flying..
Thats part of the mystery. The phone supposedly has 512 internal, but a lot of it is used up by the Sense bloat, and by a lot of the TMobile stuff here in the States. Mine out of the box had roughly 150mb internally available , and I am down to about 100mb free with some apps installed.
With that said, this thing is still pretty darn snappy. And when 2.2/Froyo comes along, it will have apps2sd available, which will help increase your internally available memory too. I'd say to go to a store and check it out, you'll be surprised how fast it is.
Reviews are claiming this phone runs faster then all the other android phones out there right now. Even with all the crap you can't uninstall from t-mobile its still very fast. I have yet to experiance any noticable lag.
No regrets here, I am glad my mytouch 3g died
145 m available for programs after hard reset....at least that's what mine had!
Android System Info on mine says 419MB of RAM. In the Slide's owner's manual it says 512MB of RAM.

Well the 145mb is how much internal storage you have for apps. It does have 512 for RAM. If I kill all my apps that are running I would have 250+ of RAM free. And this phone flies. I might kill all apps once a day and the phone stays fast at even 60mb of RAM free. No worries.

im at 0 free no more apps unless i uninstall. and the phone still flys

Yes i'm outta internal storage as well.need an apps2sd solution or root to remove all this bloatware.
RAM and storage are two completely different things. It has 512MB of both. Mine is showing 418MB of system ram, the rest presumably used for video, and the storage is partitioned into /system, /cache, and /data which is all that is usable for apps.

[Q]-Why TMOUS HD2 Showing only ~410mb of total ram in app manager, shd'nt it be 576mb?

I have a TMOUS hd2, and specs say TM version has 576 mb of ram, and eu version has ~450 mb ram and ~128 mb ram is reserved for Gpu , which can be unlocked, acoording to some reading i did on net ..
But when i check my ram in app manager it shows only ~410 mb , what is using the rest of ram?
Not only that , different task managers show different amount of total ram, some say 400, some 410 , 420 or 430, but none more than that..
i m using aokp ics build 35 rom.
All android roms show something between 410 and 430 on reg and tmous.
You only have 30 or so missing, cos 128 is taken by the graphics at boot.
As to why, never seen an answer whenever this gets asked(im sure you looked at the dozens of identical posts before you decided to ask it again, right? ), it just 'is', , we all show the same, yours is no different to anyone else's.
I tried to search, but all threads those came up were for other phones. None for hd2. Well if everyone's hd2 is showing same amount of ram then it's a big relief. I was thinking only mine is screwed.
