I am trying to make make a simple program in Visual Studio 2008 (VB) for Windows mobile 6 and cant find a clear example of how to read a reg key value.
If this is the wrong venue please let me know. This is my first attempt in writing a program for WM
Thanks
Hi mate seeing how ignorant everyone seems to be in here lately check out this link:
http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/topic/31219-working-with-the-windows-registry-in-vbnet/
This gives code snippets that you can easily be changed and turned into your own class.

Thanks. That got me going...on my way.

Yeah I know... Nobody likes a newbie, but I hope we've all been at my state...
Can anyone tell me how to access the registry from my program ?
I've tried searching msdn, but seriously this doesn't help me.
What am I missing and what do I need to include ?
I'm not new to VB or C#, but I'm used to using it for different purposes.
Oh, one last question : Is there a good reference overview out there anywhere (for beginners in mobile development ?)
Thanking you for your help up front.
Try total commander: http://www.ghisler.com/ce.htm and then check the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ for registry hacks
no difference between windows .net and compact famework when it comes to most things

I've been lurking and reading the posts and I'm very impressed with the level of knowledge, willingness to help and general friendliness so I thought it's about time I said hello
I recently got an O2 XDA Exec with Rom 1.30.107 WWE, Rom Date 04/11/06, Radio 1.09.00, Protocol 42.42.P8, ExtRom 1.30.162 WWE
I set it up with minimal branding so there's only a little O2 stuff in there and I've not added any applications, generally I'm very happy with it
however basically it's a small PC or pda with a phone built in and among other things I'm a programmer (years out of practice but it still counts honest! ) I've had a trawl through the forum and can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for so I guess my first couple of questions are these
what tools do I need to write applications for this beastie ?
can the visual studio express suite thats free from M$ be used and if so has anyone else managed it ?
also as it's a windows system it's got a registry soooo....
can anyone recommend a good registry edit tool so I can have a look through the settings ?
and is there a list of registry tweaks anywhere (I'd like to stop the IE key going to pda.o2.co.uk and send it to my home page for a start)
needless to say I am not desperately rich so freeware is preferable to anything I have to pay for, but if I have to pay for something then it will recieve serious consideration
thank you in advance
Official info from Microsoft regarding development http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/developers/default.mspx
As for registry editing, one is as good as another in most cases. Personally I use Tascal Registry Editor http://www2r.biglobe.ne.jp/~tascal/download/pocketpc/tre.htm
And there's some good freeware here http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php but there are many more sites out there.
I'm using embedded visual c to do the job. other than me having difficulty getting hang of the GUI language (I came from DOS based C and Java), seems alright. It suppose the WM2003 SDK but doesn't seems to support the WM5 SDK.
ok thanks for the response so far
looks like I need visual studio 2005 if I want to write any apps according to Microsoft specially if I want to use the WM5 SDK although I've caught a reference to something called Pelles C from http://www.smorgasbordet.com/pellesc/ which is donationware i.e. free but they would like a donation and probably doesn't support the SDK but free is free
I'll check out the TRE registy editor too
thanks so far guys please keep 'em coming
YE GODS! VS2005 Basic costs more than I paid for the XDA !
I think I'm going to look a bit harder at this Pelles C doubrey
thank you AlanJC the registry editor works perfectly
modified HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\OEM\KEYBD\PieHomePage to my home page URL closed TRE and hit the IE button and lo and behold it went to my home page I am now officially a happy bunny
it would have been easier if TRE had a search function but again free is free so not complaining here
Hi @ all...
i wanted to know if anyone is able to give ma an introduction into programming on mobile devices.
i've got the microsoft visual studio 2005 as a student version from my school, and found the mobile device template, but i wasn't able to figure some things out.
i will try much things by myself, but if anyone could give me an example on how to write a programm that accesses the phone line.
actually i want to write a program, that is able to place a call and send DTFM to the other side.
Is there a possibility to do this?
greetings
garfield
embedded visual c++ .. it is free and I'm using it .. look at what I've did all at my signature
What you are trying to do is not so simple. You need to read and learn about Telephony API (TAPI) which is a set of functions that lets you talk to the phone part of the device.
Also, you need to install the Window Mobile 5 and / or 2003 SDK which is available for free from MS.
Finally, you have not mentioned what programming languages you know.
There is probably simpler approach for .NET then TAPI, but .NET sucks.
hmm...
already heard about tapi... but i'm not really into c++ programming.
but this will be neccessary i think.
as i'm leraning c# at school for now, i will try it that way, and if you say, there might be an easier way with .net, i'll try this. both of the phones i want to program are wm6 so i don't have to worrie about the freaking big framework as it is incorporated into wm6...
i will take a look at it, now with having tapi in mind, MSDN might help me a little...
thanks for the help
Hello,
in our company are a lot of Windows Mobile Devices in use. These should like our Client PC's listed in OCS Inventory. So, i'll try to develop a OCS Agent Client.
Functions needed:
-read out hardware Specs
-read out installed Software
-read out User Name
-send this Information over Port 80 to a Server
-nice to have: run as Service and auto send this information to the Server
Tools I've got:
-Visual Studio 2008
Skills I've got:
-writing c++ console apps
What I need:
-a Tip which programming-language I shoul use
-Some links where i can find the the functions in this language which I need
What I've done:
-search in xda-developers.com
-search in MSDN(but I don't know which language i should use)
-wrote small (stupid) apps like an calculator for ppc in visual basic as little test
-I tried to do the same in visual c++ -> without any good product, i don't know how to make a gui for the functions.
I hope you can help me, espacially in the language thing.
Thanks,
Flo

I think I'll try to use Visual Basic.
One Question further: where I can find the Commands I need to read out the Information out of the Device.
Hi,
VB was good for the first steps, but after reading in msdn i decided to use Visual c#(a can use c++ although but i think c# is better for this!?) instead.
So, registry Values i can read out. But all the other stuff....I don't know how to get this out. "You should use the API functions" i read every where, but that helps no step. I don't know which API and i don't know how to speak with it.
I hope you can give me some Tips or links.
Thanks
thanks for your help so far *:-/
IMEI,Owner,Hardware(bluetooth,Phone,Wifi,Camera) is detected....
My Problem now is: CPU Speed
I didn't found a registry entry with the Speed in it, so i need another function. Some ideas?
Im using C#...
One more Question:
Where the "Settings->System->Deviceinformation->Hardware"-Window gets its Information from?
Hope someone will answer.
Thanks.
Hello everybody. I am a programmer experienced in various languages. I want to create a very simple today-plugin, a launcher. It should be touch-responsive, to gestures to be more accurate. Target platform is Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro. I don't want to use wrappers and user-made frameworks and stuff for this, I want to write a professional app. .NET Framework is okay but I don't want to use technologies that are not made by Microsoft. Period. Okay now what I need to know is how do I do this? First I need to know which apps to get. I suppose I will need Visual Studio? Which Version? I'm downloading "Windows Mobile 6 SDK Refresh Kit" at this time. How do I proceed? Is there any sample code? I'm not looking for a huge file. I would like a quick success. Maybe I'll go into some more detail: Basically I want a fully transparent plugin, 480 x 480 px. Users should be able to move their finger from the center in 8 directions and the plugin will then launch the program associated with that direction. That's it. I hope you can help me with this. By the way, I have used the search function and I have found some threads and followed most links I encountered but it's not up to date or not what I want, so frogive me for posting another thread.
hi,
First of all, you can't use .NET Compact Framework for Today Plugin development. It has to be C++ native code AFAIK because it's a .dll - you can't have managed code DLLs.
You need Visual Studio with Smart Device Project support. I'm using VS 2008 Professional, because that's the only version that has it. Standard, Express etc doesn't have that.
You'll need that WM 6 SDK you're already downloading.
Visual Studio has a very nice Device Emulator if you don't have a device to use, but you need to download device emulator images with windows mobile 6. It's somewhere on MSDN in separate package.
I don't have any experience in today plugin development, but I'm sure you'll find a lot of resources and articles about it on:

I DID see this thread, but I don't want to search download install and configure 20 apps out of which I only need 2 for my purpose. Thanks to grzegorzaksamit for the information. I will organize VS 2008 then. Any other help regarding the actual development is highly appreciated!

There is an example in either the WM5 or WM6 SDK.
