I just ordered a 50$ refurb mytouch slide 3g from tmobile, just to test out their network around me and I only had 75$ to work with but next week I'll have more money so I'll pay out the difference for G2 or vibrant unless I love this device.. what is the latest or best ROM i can currently flash to this device? I'll be getting it sometime around this Thursday or Friday, also if I choice to change it for another device, i can just flash the stock ROM and poof! that is all right? thanks!
You need to root first, then I'd suggest updating the radio.
CyanogenMod 6 is a great ROM, but you can try all of the ROMs in the development section to see what suits your fancy.
Yes, you can flash wesgarner's stock ROM to revert.
I think many people will be switching to the G2 (myself included) though I really do like my Slide. It is a nice little phone. The keyboard isn't as great as the G1 (the G2 is also lacking) yet it has as much flash and RAM as the N1, which makes it quite snappy.
Yeah, CM6 is okay. I'd go with #TeamFenix v2.0 though.
But if you want a fully functional ROM, stick with CR_MOD.
I've been looking at other phones, and as tempting as they are, there's no real reason for me to upgrade beyond the Slide at this point. I have it OC'd to 825 and running totally smooth. Once we get a stock Froyo update, it's going to be a great phone.

So I've been on verizon as long as I can remember, (previous droid and droid X owner), but due to financial issues my family is moving to sprint, which includes me. I'm no stranger to the ROM game, i've flashed more ROMs and done so many nandroid backups i've lost count. So basically what i'm asking is what's the best ROMs for the Evo? I recall seeing something mid-september of the Desire HD rom's, but remember no 4g connectivity and camera, did that ever pan out? And as far as kernel's go anything specific I should be using? And lastly i'm assuming z4root works on the Evo without a hitch? Thanks

Most people seem to be using CM ROM and others find DMG control or others more stable or whatever. I personally go between MIUI and CM depending on my tastes for the month.
Overall, both are two great ROMs, just find one that suits your taste and customize ability.
as others have stated before its all a matter of opinion i personally like Azrael X for sense and everything works cam 4G and what not for aosp i like CM6.1. kernels is a crapshoot since all phones like different things my phone likes CFS kernels and can be agressively undervolted without a problem some phones won't work with those conditions so you have to see what works for you. And Z4root does not work anymore your best bet will be the long way using the Fresh like pine cones thread or universal root by xhausx if your really lucky you and you get a older HBOOT phone like .97 or lower you can use unrEVOked. I like Cyanogen, personally. It runs really well, and I can live without 4G.
Many people, including me, like the heavily themed myns warm twopointtwo. Try them all see what you like. I will probably switch to cm once 4g is working for it though.
If I were you I'd take a look at all of the different ROM threads and get a feel both for the ROM and the community that supports that ROM. I've used Vaelpak, Fresh, and now I'm on Myn's Warm. I've liked them all but Warm is my absolute favorite.
When going through the threads you can get a real sense for the amount of support for that ROM and how much customization is available. I'd make a list of what's important to you also. Aesthetics is HUGE for me and I want a ROM that looks and feels good. Most AOSP functions look quite clunky to me and I wasn't a big fan of the Sense clock. But between Warm and the various customizations I was able to make it look how I wanted it to.
Be warned that there's thousands of pages to dig through so it's going to just take a lot of sampling on your part to figure out which one really suits you. If you ask 30 people you'll get a different answer each time so take our advice with a grain of salt.

Myn's ROM is amazing and it has 4G connectivity. I HIGHLY recommend it.
I'd second what JB said - the fresh like pine cones method works for newer EVO's. I got mine just after the hboot changed and went through about a week and a half of pain in the neck trying to get it rooted, and finally the revised method in that thread worked for me. Then I rooted another EVO using that method - in an hour flat. I would definitely recommend following that method very closely.
As to roms it's personal. I'm running avafroyo v10 and I like it, but I haven't tried a whole bunch of them so take that with a grain of salt. fresh worked pretty smoothly as well, but ava seems a bit faster IMO.
Having a hero and having enjoyed watching the development of Damageless and Flipz's rom, I use a stock rooted conservative rom on the EVO. I like sense (with all it's overhead). Kingx's kernels (with links that are banned on this site) are free and work well with the stock roms. I'm using BFS11 and twelve depending on the week.
So it's a matter of personal preference, and these are mine. Good luck.
there is no bad rom, they are all great, there are lots of fanboys that side with their rom more vocally than others (looking at the myns followers) but you wont go wrong with any, if your in need of 4g stick with a sense based, if 4g isn't a concern try an aosp variant, all roms have their own thread and you can get a great idea of the support behind them and problems that each have, I recommend flashing them all like I have so you get the best first hand experience then find a good kernel to pair with it
I also recommend you make a nandroid backup using amon ra 1.8 recovery to save your rsa keys then using clockwork so you can use rom manager to flash your roms as its super easy and requires little hands on during the process

I have an HTC HD2 that I've been flashing for a few months now (SD, NAND, etc), so I'm not new to flashing ROMS. I am, however, new to the MyTouch 3G. I've never really messed around with it. I just started reading some of the tutorials on here today...
Anyway, I'd like to get her phone to perform better.
Can anyone recommend a good ROM to flash for performance?
She doesn't need crazy apps or features. She has typical cell phone usage habits, like calling, texting, pictures, facebook, and a few games. That's about it.
Any help is appreciated!

Well... depending on what kind of MyTouch she has would depend on what would be best for her. Seeing that you are in the United States I will assume that you have either the standard 32B devices or the newer model with the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top (also known and referred to as Fender, 1.2, LE and "the-one-with-the-3.5mm-headphone-jack"). All honesty she might as well stick with stock for stability. Most custom roms are stable so don't get me wrong but some members complain that CM 6.1.0 rom (for example) makes their phone run slow. Others like the stock rom because they swear that it's faster. Being comletely honest here most of the MyTouch roms that you'll find here will be for the 32A type devices (foriegn hardware that would be incompatible with yours). This is because all of the 32B devices (USA devices) are also compatible with the G1/Dream. So instead of managing two different threads for two different devices for the same rom we just direct MyTouch 32B users to the G1/Dream section. I know it's really complicated but in a nutshell... if your MyTouch is ordered from T-Mobile USA then you should look toward the G1/Dream section for your roms because there are more posted there than there are here.
I'd have to say out of the custom ROM's I've tried, I like CyanogenMod 5.0.8 the best. That's the one I've kept on my wife's phone since I rooted it back in June. It's very stable and get's you the nicer feature's of Android 2.1. Honestly though, staying stock is probably the way to go. If you've got the older 32B then she should've already gotten the T-Mobile update to 2.2 and if not, then a call to Customer Service should get it. If you've got the 1.2 (3.5mm jack) they're going to start rolling out the update for it beginning tomorrow and running until the 1st of February. It may just be time to do a factory reset and if that doesn't improve performance, maybe use one of the one-click root methods, flash the custom recovery, then just flash an OC kernel.
Gio's 2.2.1 worked great and looked awesome on mine. Don has it right though, just wait a couple more days and get the stock 2.2.1 for your phone and clean it up and im sure it will play nicer.
Just a friendly word of advice. Just cause you are good at working another android phone doesn't mean another will be easy. I did lots of reading before and after rooting and flashing my phone. I still do.
Hell, now that there is mention of the OTA, now everyone wants to go back stock to get it. Instead of looking, cause its already out there, they keep wanting to know how.

Just a word of advice, if you regularly tether the phone to your computer for internet access and install the tmobile ota update, tethering will be disabled and you will have to pay $15/mo extra to keep tethering. A cs rep told me this a few months ago and that conversation was actually what finally made me root my mt3g, and I'm glad I did. I was using cm6.1 and speed was decent, but the latest nightly build had a huge increase in performance and I haven't had a single issue with stability. The new 32b 2.6.35.10 kernel has also been much faster and I have been getting WAY better reception by updating to the 2.22.28.25 radio. And universal androot method worked for me on the mytouch in the same way as any other device.

I would root it. There are tons of things that are advantages, such taking some of the crapware that comes bundled on the phone, ability to put themes on your phone, and you get added features with cyanogenmod and other roms out there. The features you can check out for yourself, which can be found on changelogs, YouTube videos, forum post, etc. Spend some time, read that roms' forum thread and learn a few things along the way.

It can be a tough decision.
First of all I am coming from a g1 that was running the latest stable cyanogenmod so the G2 has been an amazing phone stock. It is super fast and the display is seriously amazing. I did root it because I wanted to check out the cm7 nightlies and also the stable cm6.1.1.
First of all I actually like some of the apps that came pre-installed on the g2. Quickoffice is amazing and an excellent ppt, pdf, doc viewer. I did miss that on cyanogen and I also preferred the stock 2.2 scheme and app drawer. However these are the main differences. Everything else is very similar just with added functionality. You can manipulate every aspect of the UI including the power widget on the notification bar (my personal favorite). You can also overclock your cpu to squeeze some more performance out (up to 1.8ghz but I hear 1.4 is safer). You can also use your current data plan for tethering instead of having to pay extra.
But all in all if you don't require or need this functionality, just stay stock. The stock experience is excellent. I come from the G1 culture where we rooted just so we could stay relevant and get some decent speed on our long forgotten phones. That was the only reason I rooted before and quite possibly the only reason I'll root in the future.
I went back to stock to get my quick office back and I really don't mind the loss of functionality (for now) however I do miss the cool radio tuner.
Quickoffice is in CyanogenMod...
Anyway, root your phone and flash CyanogenMod. The stock experience is great and all but so many things just work better with CyanogenMod.
When you root, you obtain so many more capabilities. How would you like to remove every single advertisement you see? Well you can't do it unless you root.
There are so many more things but I just can't get into it. You'll sit here all day reading my post. Just take me word for it and root. You won't go wrong but READ READ READ all instructions and understand them before you do anything.
Yes, it is risky but only if you're stupid and/or rushing. Make sure you have the correct files and always make a backup. I keep them in a special place on me computer. I still have my stock backed up for if I ever have a problem.
It's a fun thing to get into. You learn a lot and will continue to learn. If you don't find out something new everyday with your G2, there's really no reason to have it, IMHO...

Cyanogen is stock 2.3.2 with tons of extra features and extremely stable. Stock is 2.2.1 with a ton of bloat and no extra features. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I am coming from a rooted G1 and I got my G2 from the free promotion and I rooted because I can't do without it. Once you have root, you won't ever want to go back. I rooted my G2 in the first 30 minutes that it was out of the box. Only down side that I can think of is that you can't have an inteligent conversation with a service rep. xD
You can get root and stay on the stock software/ROM but I don't recemend it, the whole Android experiance changes the moment you install a custom ROM.
The manufacturer and carrier has locked the phone down so much that they basically own the phone, they locked down the potential of the device so much that once you have root you'll be amazed about how much stuff you can now do on it.
YOU bought the phone, its YOURS, NOT the carrier's, NOT the manufacturer's but YOURS, why not make it so?

I would also recommend that you check out some of the Desire Z/Sense ports (I'm using Virtuous). They're quite clean in terms of bloatware, but you get alot of extras, such as a superior camera/music player app, plugins (Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, etc), and more. You can still use ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro for your homescreen/app drawer.

I got mine last Friday and I rooted just to get rid of the bloatware and for overclock.
The FM radio is a bonus... that's sweet.
Does rooting still void the warranty?
I waited until my warranty had run out with my G1 before I rooted it. Just afraid the phone'll break or so and I wont have any options.

Technically, yes. However, it's pretty easy to flash a stock ROM back on if you break something.
I preordered my G2 after a long, rooted 2 years on the G1. When I first got the G2, I said I wouldn't root because it didn't need it. My G2 did everything the G1 did but much, much faster. Then I got tired of not having full control of my phone. I had apps I would never use running in the background plus numerous other things that I just had no control over. Then, the brilliant developers found root and I haven't looked back.
I have a lot of people with unrooted android devices around me and they are always blown away by what I can do with my G2. For me, rooting turned my smartPHONE into tiny PC that does calls.
I have a guy I work with who just picked up the new nexus. He was showing it to me and commented on the GB light when you hit the bottom of a page. Well he griped that he wanted the overscroll bounce back. I then showed him that with root and cyan, you can have both. He wasn't ammused as he is afraid to root.
I say read up on everything that is involved with rooting and flashing custom bits. When you feel comfy with it. Unlock that bish and make that G2 your own.

I've decided to give my niece my old G1 for her 12th birthday as her first phone. I believe she's technically adept enough to use and take care of it. However, she lives 90 miles away, so I won't be able to service it easily if something goes terribly wrong.
So what would be a good setup of the G1 to prepare it for long term use? What would be a fast stable ROM to install and any applications that would prove useful for this scenerio?
The phone is both rooted and unlocked, though she'll likely be using T-Mobile.
The current ROM is BiffMod V2.1.

I'd put FroyoByLaszlo 5.2 on, it's the fastest and most stable ROM i've ever had, and it's obviously 2.2. I'd definitely do that.
Or downgrading & unrooting it to stock 1.6 sounds good too, since its the most stable & fastest & plus, she's only 12 lol

Froyo for Trout is an amazing ROM if you want none if the DEV features. Since she's 12 i don't think you want her over clocking, or putting the Phone into a Bootloop. Froyo for Trout is fast, simple, and just what a younger kid needs.
If it's not too late, I would recommend SuperAosp.
Until the gingerbread branch is fully baked, I recommend you to flash the froyo roms, saves u d 90 miles of travelling if anything happen, lol
Get the newer spl and radio for extra ram
I recommend froyo for trout for stock, or froyobylaszlo for a light cyanogenmod based rom

I have LOVED my EVO 4G. Have flashed countless roms. Favs have to be Tommy's and MIUI but I also really liked Synergy before Tommy's was released.
So I hear all this talk about the EVO LTE not being fully rootable. So, can someone please point me in the right direction...?
The biggest selling point for me when it comes to getting a new phone is the screen/display. I NEED a large screen and want it to look nice (vibrant colors). I know the LTE has a 4.7inch screen which is very attractive to me.
I assume the LTE will be fully rootable sometime down the road. Maybe like a month or two after release I hope. I hear all this talk about the Galaxy Nexus and another model so I'm not sure if going LTE is the right choice? I want to be able to flash new roms when needed. I don't mind Sense as you can see based on my fav roms but I am not "tech" savvy so will it still be possible to flash roms on the LTE using Amon Recovery? I don't know how to push things using the PC and root commands like "su" so if that is the only way to flash stuff on the LTE then I will have a problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I think it'll be possible to fully root it, I don't think Sprint will go the same route AT&T went with when they had HTC lock down the One X, though that's certainly within the realm of possibility as well. We'll just have to wait and see if the unlocker tool will work for the EVO LTE. If not, then I give it a few months. Somebody will find a work around.
You'll be able to flash ROMs just fine from what I understand. Unless boot.img has to be done thru fastboot. I saw that being the case somewhere recently, I just can't remember where. But you won't be able to flash splashscreens and radios until/if S-off.
From what I've seen you can flash kernels and recoveries using flash_image GUI app. Now, that was the case apparently for Evo 3d, but if the partitions are written and protected differently from that then this may not still hold true.
I intend to get it, see how it goes over the first 14 days, and if it looks like brick walls on S-off or easy kernel flashing, I'll exchange it for galaxy nexus on 15th day.

if rooting and flashing roms really are important factors in your decision, just wait. Wait until devs have the LTevo in their hands and what happens with root (shouldnt be more than a couple weeks) if there arent any issues than jump on board. if for some reason there are issues, go with the gnex. it sucks that sprint is now charging a $35 restocking fee for all its phones if you swap within the grace period (you could always go this route too if you have the extra cash)
they both have big, beautiful screens and both are excellent phones. one gripe i hear about for the gnex is battery life but then you have removeable batteries as an option
Until the Evo LTE is sitting in the hands of developers for a few weeks at the minimum, a question like this can NOT be answered.

Go into an AT&T store and play with the One X, you WILL want this phone! This is basically the same as the EVO LTE, though the LTE does have some nicer specs!
Scott is right, you will be able to have access to flash ROM's, I don't know about the flash image GUI, I heard that they lock out any flashing from within /system...
About recovery, I don't know which ones will be available as one will need to be ported. Hopefully someone will work on porting Amon Ra, usually Clockwork is the first available.
You WILL have to learn fastboot commands prior to a one-click type of root being made available, this isn't that hard, if you can get through the HTC unlock process you can do pretty much anything in fastboot or ADB.
With Sense 4 being so light, beautiful and functional you won't have much need of flashing ROM's until some good tweaks are developed. Basically all of the tweaks you would make to a normal ROM have now become built into Android. Swipe to clear notification? Stock. Inverted pull down menu? Stock. Anything ICS styled? Stock. Plus there is more. Really go play with the One X and you won't regret your decision to get the LTE.
This is coming from someone who is not going to get the phone, by the way... I plan to get either the Galaxy Nexus or the next Nexus unlocked from Google and put it on a sim plan with T-mobile. This is primarily for monetary reasons, and it doesn't hurt to get a device designed for developers...

Good point about flash_image GUI and writing to system from within android. I know that hasn't happened yet for one x. It must be locked differently than 3d. But swagstr wrote that on 3d they could use flash image to flash recovery and kernel, but couldn't use ROM Manager (which I would never use) cuz they can't write to /system from within Android. Interesting puzzles.
