Camera Flash Item??

Why dont they make a flash tool that plugs into your micro usb port or replaces the battery cover, so we can finally take pictures with a flash?
I dont believe this would be too hard..would it?

Using flash takes away all shades and your pictures will look like 2D drawings. Applies to any camera off course

It would, as the USB port can't give any power.
Just get yourself a keychain flashlight... or even better, a camera.

That is the biggest crock of S*** I've heard in a while. I guess all of those professional photographers who use flashes are wrong, huh?

Which is better, a less than ideal photo (and I'm not a photographer so cant confirm the effects) or a far to dark/totally black photo?

I know NOTHING of programing these phones, but from a mechanical stand point, I'm not too bad. Is there anyway to trigger something out the USB port when the camera is ready to pop? Something so that the light doesn't have to be on constantly, but can come on only when the camera is ready to snap, like a standard digital camera works? I can probably fab up a back cover with a flash built into it...

Why is this an issue? I fail to see any correlation at all between the equipment used by a professional photographer, and the convenience of a simple 3MP snapshot camera included in your phone. You were given a suggestion that addressed your problem and apparently you were quite upset by it. So, my turn... This IS NOT a 10 - 12 MP Canon, Nikon or Leica! Its to snap a quick shot of something for later reference - an event, a schedule, a location, a photographic note, if you will. The camera in your phone is not the primary device or function of your phone - its an 'added function' that can be effectively used as intended, or complained about by those that can't fully appreciate its capabilities!
Oh, and those professional cameras listed above don't make or receive phone calls, don't have e-mail or voicemail capabilities, don't play my mp3s or videos, can't use wifi to browse the internet or for online banking or for etc., store GBs of data other than pics & video, function as a gps unit, open or edit my Office docs, use text messaging, or play a myriad of games! And yet they cost from $699 to $999 apiece! How do those manufacturers' sleep at night? And you won't find a forum for support anything near as intense and complete as the XDA-Developer's Forum - all for what you can afford to donate!
Now I don't mean to preach, so here's examples: instead of a daily to-do or task list, I can take a quick series of photos to remind me! Pix of ATM card to remind me to go to the bank, of a loaf of bread or carton of milk to remind me to hit the grocery store, of the Suburban's front end to call for an appointment to get the front-end aligned, of the dog to remember his vet appointment, and of a document I need to complete by end-of-business! Those pix are worth a thousand words, and the time it would take to write detailed notes to myself! Then simply delete photos as tasks are completed! Too cool! At the store over lunch and see a new Sony LCD HDTV you like? Take a photo of it, along with the pertinent sales tag info, and research it later at home on the internet! Meet someone you haven't seen in a while? Take a photo to remind yourself to tell the wife that night, with that picture to enhance your tale! Need to match paint for a room in the house with the colors of the furnishings or rugs? Take a series of pictures with you to the hardware store. Take a photo of a suspicious vehicle 'just in case'? An accident, a surprise event, a crime or disaster? You at least have the camera in your phone - its way better than no camera at all. For your 'Keepsake Memories' get a decent camera, complete with a flash!
Hope this helps put things in perspective for you.
BTW, this was a rant - not a discussion or an argument, so keep your opinions to yourself. I've said what I wanted to say!

I think about how much I miss my flash on my old phone all the time. That was a huge blunder leaving it off the Kaiser. Even if you never use a flash on your pictures, it was a handy flashlight. But it was certainly nice to have a flash for pictures too.

Don't worry, the thread isn't 'out of control' you just need to take heed of what kilrah has already posted. The USB port on the Kaiser isn't a host port so it doesn't (and cannot be made to) behave like an ordinary USB port on your PC (well not without some serious electronic redesign work far beyond what we as non phone designer sorts could come up with). Other options must be investigated.

Was the USB comment directed at me? I was just wondering if there was a way to trigger the flash 'remotely'.
as for some sort of add on flash, my dad has made several LED units, self contained, that fit in a 3/4 inch copper pipe cap. Mostly made of brass, it includes a switch and is heavy. He used it as a night lite for something like 7 days str8 on a single 2032 battery. Granted, it is not sleak, but it was self contained.
The main problem with a 'flash' is that the camera app wouldn't be able to process the picture any faster (focus on it and make adjustments for light) before snapping it because the camera app wouldn't know that a flash would be coming soon to compensate for a flash... unless we have a camera programer in our midsts? Or, can a camera app be ported from a flash enabled device, or do the OEM flashes stay on as long as a flash is called for, so there is no 'compensation' per se?
I am getting ready to purchase a TyTN II parts phone, I'll have to see what I can do with it. I've got a few ideas up my sleave. Does anyone have what the Proprietary USB B port pin out is, both sides of the tongue?

if anyone makes this invention i will gladly buy it from them ASAP

Heh, I've started working on it... at this point, I'm not working on making it interface with the camera, it will have an external switch and be something you turn on when you want it, and could also be used as a flashlight to light your way in the dark...
I am also toying with having it light up when ever the camera is in use, but I need to find a dead kaiser (the phone I own, so the phone I'm developing for) in order to work on some sort of interface for automatic operation...
Anybody got a Kaiser with a crushed screen and case that I could tinker with? *grins*

I used the flash on my S710 as NIGHT LIGHT all of the time. I think an external flash able to slide in an touch the battery contacts would be cool. Een if you had to turn on the light by a little switch built into the back cover. 5V should be MORE than enough power to light up maybe 3-5 small LED lights. Even if they werent connected to the cam directly, im sure it would help a lot in low light situations. Just my 2 cents I like this idea

I am in the process of comunicating with LED suppliers, and will begin mocking something up here in the coming weeks... I'll keep you posted.
A couple of questions for potential users... What is better, to make a cradle to slip the phone into, to make the components fit completely with in the format of the phone now, or to make the phone slightly larger (like an extended battery pack)?
The advantage of a craddle is that it can be put on and removed fairly quickly... Downside is that it would be hardest for me to make... (grins)
The advantage of the lights fitting within the format of the phone now is that you don't have to have something extra, or an extra large phone, to carry around. Perimatly mounted, and ready to go at all times... the down side is reduced performance because of no extra batteries, and possibly fewer LEDs, and the fact that the owner of the phone would possibly have the hardest time installing it.
The advantage of an extended battery type back cover is that you can get extended battery usage (by use of separate batteries for the LEDs), and nice balance between easy on/easy off and size... the downside is that the phone would be slightly larger, and you would have to carry the extra back cover if you didn't always want the phone bigger, but wanted the option for a flash.
The cradle idea would be the most expensive by far, and quite probably out of my reach at this time.
The extended back and original size formate are going to be fairly close in price I have the feeling.
The extended back will probably be the easiest to build, but personally, I'd rather not use that style.
So, what do _YOU_ think?

The best one, in my opinion, would be an entirely new battery cover that had LED lights mounted in it, and was not any bigger than the original battery cover.
Something that is permanently mounted, and basically a part of the phone, and not making the phone any bigger (it's already a brick). Maybe a little larger than the regular battery cover, but not a lot. Hopefully not enough to notice. I'm not worried about battery life as this would only get used for a few minutes every day (at the most).
I don't know if that is even possible, but if it is, I'll take 4 of them.
Nobody ever uses an external GPS receiver, so maybe the stuff could go in right there?

Yes, a maglite would work... but I take many photos with my camera when I can't put both hands in position to illuminate the subject and hit the shutter... I go to the car salvage yard alot, and if I can't see a part good enough from my vantage point, I'll hold my phone up and snap a picture from there to see if it is worth digging for, for example.
As for it not being an SLR, MOST digitial cameras are NOT slr... and MOST people do not shell out tons of money for an SLR. If you don't like the camera phone, that's fine... you can carry a second item. For the rest of us, we'd like to improve on a decent useable camera, so we will, Thank you.

Hehehe, my wife never uses her GPS at all, but I use an antenna adapter from Wilson Electronics along with a mini whip antenna with a magnetic mount... it go from 1-2 bars on a bad day (with TomTom Navigator 6), to a full count of 5 bars... unplug the antenna, and it goes back down, plug it back in, and it bounces back up...
I've looked into using that area, but it really doesn't afford much in the way of space, and I'm not too keen on modifying the original fabric of the phone itself, it just doesn't seem 'right' to me.

hd2 and x-ray

Hi guys,
last week I went for holiday in London.
At the airport, when leaving, before the x-ray checkin I used the phone and all worked fine, after the x-ray I looked at the phone and it was dead...it didn't switch on using the hang-off call button and nothing..they only way was to take away the battery and reinstall it...than It restarted wihtout problem....btw I thought that was some kind of bug and didn't give it too much importance.
Than when I come back, again before the check-in I used the phone without problem with the wi-fi airport, then check-in and when I tryed to switch it on again the phone was again dead!!! So I remember what happend just the week before when I was at the airport and start to think that when the HTC HD2 is x-rayed for some strange reason it stop working and freeze...and the only way to make it running again it's to take away the battery and reinsert...
The phone of my wife (a Nokia) hadn't any problem...and to be honest I never had problem with all my previous phone....(I had an HTC P3600 before and never had problem with x-ray).
So, did you have the same problem?

I had a succesion of devices fail on me. The only common factor was that each had been through airport security within 24 hours of failing. The scanner is supposed to be safe but make of this what you will. My HD2 has been through the same airport 3 times and it is still fine.

Your not actually supposed to expose any electronic device to any sort of radiation while it's turned on. Especially Gamma, xray or EM (electromagnetic).
I'm very surprised that they are making you xray your phone these days. It's been a little over 10 years since i was in an airport and back then they asked you to prove it worked by turning it on. I guess things have changed a bit since then.
As a case in point though, if your abit handy with computers take the side off, stick your phone in there and just very gently touch one of the chips on the motherboard. You'll notice your pc will hang. This is because the EM radition emitted from the GSM antenna screws with the chips on the motherboard.
So remember for next time. Turn your phone off and pull the battery till you get out of the immediate area of the xray machine

That's odd. I've been through many airports with many different phones and none have ever suffered as a result.

i seen a video some time ago on youtube where someone left their point n shoot camera in video record mode and put it though the xray scanner. you could visibly see "electrical noise" in the recorded video as it passed though the xray beam.
safe to assume this will happen in phone too, so any data being processed or written into ram or maybe even flash as the phone is bombarded with xrays has a potential for corruption. like you said its probably best to remove all power to any device with important info, or atleast reboot it afterwords just to make sure there isnt any corrupt data sitting in ram
actually now that i think of it dram is constantly being refreshed, so there's constant data between the chip set and ram modules. all kinds of chances for xrays to corrupt data there

Everything gets x-rayed now, without exception. I always remove the batteries before security. Note that my airline only allows 2 spare (ie. loose) LiON batteries. I haven't been hassled by this.

Id suggest a battery pull, even when asleep the phone is still partially on, and the RAM is always active because it would loose data if it wasn't

Slightly off topic but i feel sorry for those suckers that pass through those x-ray machines with the laptop they just put into standby or hibernate. Say good bye to the hard drive!

Strange. I'm a frequent flyer, my HD2 went through x-ray scanners many times, always on, and I have never experienced such problem...

I dont see how xrays would damage the magnetic media any more so being on or off. I could however see the memory dump file being corrupted if the laptop was still in the process of hibernating as it passed though the xray beam, since the xrays would get at data being processed in the HDs onboard DSP, cache or bus cable
i would think there would be a better chance of xrays damaging data stored on flash memory and SSDs than magnetic media, especially as the lithographic processes shrink to create the flash memory chips

I dont understand why do hospital keep wasting funds on please turn of your mobile posters in the hospitals when people like you dont bloody read it and then go cry on XDA. You not meant to expose any phone to radiation!! jeez

Trust me the hospitals don't give a **** what their radiation producing equipment does to your phones or any other portable devices, they are worried about a 1watt maybe a little more transmitter inducing stray currents in their sensitive electronics.
Though you would think now a days they would take cellphones and other transmitting devices into account when developing medical hardware, especially when you consider how much hospitals pay for this hardware. I could see medical hardware in a hospital a decade and a half ago not being hardened against transmissions, since it was relatively uncommon back then. in my opinion it would be sheer incompetence from a hardware maker today not to take that into account and test for it when developing a piece of hardware.
There is also the added benefit that newer cell technology seems to induce less or no interference in other nearby equipment, and possibly use less transmit power. for example GSM/iDEN phones put next to audio equipment would almost always create noise from the signals. newer 3G/CDMA does not do this. I remember other technologies TDMA i think when placed near a CRT monitor would make the monitor look as if it were being degaussed

SSD's were exactly what i was refering to but if a laptop is in hibernate mode then the RAM image is stored right at the start of the disk. If the drive has any power to it at all you run the risk of seriously damaging the electronics in it. Remember all disk drives -HDD's, SSD's etc - still have controller boards on them

Most UK hostipals are so underfunded that they are still using that ancient kit. It's only in the last 2 years that the newer kit has been coming in and the restrictions have started to shift. If your american then there is no issue. They are so overfunded they complain that they have no idea how to spend all the money

All medical equipment used in UK hospitals must be CE marked. The CE mark on this equipment means that it must be able to perform with out being effected by radio waves.
The original ban in UK hospitals was because of the old analogue mobile phones, that used to pump out their signal at full strength. Not once did they ban the pagers that the medics used or the walkie talkies that the porters used - and they really pump out a massive signal.
My mate was modify monitoring computers at patient's beds in and Intensive Care Unit. He made quite a few mobile phone calls and noticed that it didn't effect the monitoring equipment once. And this was done on the 9th to the 11th of September 2001.

most digital signals are now shielded against in medical equipment.
Analog signals on the other hand (walkie talkie's)....

Ive never had any problems with x-raying the phone when i worked on an airport here in Sweden. I had to x-ray it every day before work.

Where I work, there isn't any equipment that can be harmed by phones. There are x-ray machines but nothing I own has been harmed by them. Then again, I don't go anywhere near them myself. If a a patient's phone is fried, tough. We do have signs saying that phone use is forbidden but not because they will cause damage.
No, the problem is patient's who answer their phone during treatment. You really wouldn't believe some of the situastions I been in when someone has whipped out their mobile and started talking (or tried talking; I work on the head end!) Worse still are some of the ring tones. A really loud scream coming from a pocket does nothing to steady my hand.

I work in an airport, have done for the last six years and everyday my phone goes through the xray machine.
Never thought about it before but will certainly start turning it off just in case.

Sitting here with a broken hand, had numerous xrays done, phone was in the vicinity and on standby. No problems so far (touch wood).

And it's still only a bog slow 500mA charge rate which means ~5 hours to charge with the phone powered off, even longer if on!

IMHO, wireless charging is pointless cuss from looking at most wireless charging fones, it has to be on at a certain way. If its not, it won't charge!. Not only that but it doesn't give a fast enough charge & if say I wanted to use my fone as well as charge it... You can't!. Your paying for the novelty imho..

Hmm now I can't rlly decide it. I wanna get a new phone in the summer I had the evo 3d n i have the one X now and really the only problem I have is the slow updates n s-on n multitasking. Hope they done a better job at sense 5 n with the 2gb ram cuz that constant reloading, even the Web pages is annoying. I have cm10.1 now and I open 10-15 pages so I can read some stuff on the subway. Overall it's a gorgeous phone.

Honestly if you have the one x, just move on and get the one. And I say this as an owner of the one x. HTC I believe wants to try and forget about the hox and all its red headed step children with their naming conventions and move on to the one. The hox will be a thing of the past soon. They want a single, unifying phone across all carriers. Not this x, s, v, + crap like before.

Except they still caved for the US carriers and did 4g-gimped versions for each one. But yeah, i know where you're coming from. Have the HOX now and will almost certainly be making the leap.

S-OFF should be doable. Snapdragon phones are miles easier to S-OFF. If they didn't fix the S-OFF exploit from the Droid DNA/One XL, we can expect to have S-OFF at launch. Otherwise, it might take a while.

If an electric field would normally induce current flow in the charging coil, then why wouldn't it induce current flow in the coil on the battery and produce eddy currents in the Alumnium body that in turn would also induce currents in the charging coil?

[Q] Movies in bed

Wondering if anyone has good solutions to using the N10 to watch movies in bed without having to hold it.
Yes I admit its pretty lazy but it sucks to hold a tablet in place for such a long time.
Ideally laying on ones back would be best. Cases and accessories are fine too.

Of course, I also have had you have similar ideas, but I want to let it stand on the table, so I went and bought a stent, thought you could have thought of lying in bed watching the movie without the book to take the machine, was the best. I suggest that the wall in your room you install a bracket, or a rope hanging from the ceiling, and then put the machine back with a strong adhesive tied on it. I use this most every night "Nexus 10 DIY Pogo Dock©". I may have written about it as humour but I really do use it. Its greatest advantage is a soft underside unlike the metal based alternatives and of course being dirt cheap.

Yes I admit its pretty lazy but it sucks to hold a tablet in place for such a long time.
Ideally laying on ones back would be best. Cases and accessories are fine too.

I'm fat so the nexus rests over my belly during bed-movie time. I just hold it the minimum to make it not fall.

Leaning it against a pillow works pretty well if you have an extra.

The retractable arm looks epic... I will have to take that under some serious consideration... It looks entirely possible for me to mount that on the headboard. Heck it even looks like a conversation starter... "Hey baby wanna check out my bed/tablet mount?" :victory:
The DIY project looks interesting... I may just have to try that just for fun.
The gogopillow looks interesting... I am wondering if anyone has tried it yet... The only possible downside I can see is the tablet getting hot.

90% of Nexus 10 cases function as a stand. If you don't like to cover your tablet a pillow works. They also make stand alone tablet stands, but I don't know how comfortable they would be on your lap. I bought the cheapest case I could find

Ok, forum filled with complaints, this one just for what you really like

1. Turbo charger is insane
2. The screen is gorgeous
3. The battery will make a full day of work with heavy duty usage
4. Love the Moto voice
5. No Verizon logos
6. Love the looks, and the nylon back is awesome
7. I do believe the size is the sweet spot, my note's great for use, but not do much carrying it around, this beast is big enough even for my old eyes and disappears in your pocket

It's very early in the turbo's life, yes I think a few things needs fixed, and I believe they will in time, reading these threads make it seem like a disaster of a phone, I'm saying there's more to love then hate.

I really don't have a problem with the phone. I'm still learning what it does. Like it telling me good afternoon and reading my text message to me today..lol
I use the phone for work and as a personal phone. The biggest thing for me getting the phone was the battery. I bought it yesterday so, I have only charged it once. When I snagged it at 7am this morning, I played Clash of Clans, checked my email, the weather ans played Spades. Bout 30 minutes. I then talked throughout the day for around 5 hours of talk time. Played COC a few more times for a couple minutes, checked emails, had google find me a FedEx box and navigate me to it and a few other random things. As I am right now, the battery is at 53%. THAT IS EFFING RETARDED!! I came from an S3. I had to charge it twice daily just to be able to make it home from work without it dying. I felt like that commercial against Apple where everyones at the airport hugging a wall. I was that guy..lol Ever gone to a college basketball game and found yourself next to the mens room charging your phone so you have enough juice to make a call on the way home in case of emergency?
I can hammer this phone with everything I got and it's going to make it through the day. I could ask for nothing more. Add in a 15 minute charge can get me 8 hours... wow.
Screen size is perfect, fabric back is cool and in a month or two I will have Lollipop and my Data and Voice at the same time back with VoLTE. I'm good to go.

Its basically the sexiest phone ever.

This phone pretty much changed my life! Once I left the Verizon store and waddled over to Walmart, the chicks took notice immediately! The chicks noticed the tier 1 Kevlar on this phone so they immediately assumed I was a millionaire and asked to borrow money for something called meth?!? No way was I gonna give them money for whatever that stuff is cause they clearly needed soap way more. Once I gave them girls some soap money they drove off in their rascals into the night and that's when it happened, I caught a whiff of pall malls and mountain dew and from out of nowhere comes my dreamgirl! The sweatpants and flip flops she was wearing were just like the ones she was wearing in my dreams! Once we finished up our mickey D $1 doubles we shared a smoke and went back to my trailer and made sweet love. Thank you droid turbo!

What I like
No Verizon logos anywhere. Welcome change from my DROID DNA
Went from 2020 mAh to 3900 mAh. Battery is insane from what I'm used to
Build quality is great. My DNA creaked and flexed. The Turbo is rock solid
Moto Display is pretty cool and useful
Nearly stock Android is a huge plus
Much faster than my DNA. No stutters or lag
Charging is extremely fast and not needed often
There's plenty more but these are the most important to me.

The complaints I see, seem like they are coming from people who did not do their research, or otherwise cannot appreciate how awesome simple, stock Android is. But I agree with all of the above. Its a great phone.

I like that my wife doesn't complain about her phone anymore and tells me she's happy instead!

Just got mine at 4 this afternoon and setting up. Was really scared when I started reading all the posts about problems from Saturday to today, but coming from a DNA to this I can't seem to wipe the smile from my face.
All I can say is thank you Motorola for this great device.

My only complaint is the usb cable that came with it is too short.. But I like how it's got an indent so you can feel if you're plugging it in correctly in dark.
Coming from Samsung. I've got used to the left side back button. Wish I had a close all apps option.. Otherwise I love this effin phone....

Was a Motorola fan for years then switched to Samsung. There is something about Motorola that I love and the turbo is a wet dream come true!!!

that reverse back button will bite you in the ass..lol Im trying to get used to it. 3 years give or take with an S3 and my finger just goes there with my brain letting it happen. (to the wrong side)

Well its good to see this thread. I was going to not buy this phone because of all the complaints. And I was going to get the nexus 6. But I have no clue when the nexus is coming out. Maybe I'll give this a try and if I don't like with within the 14 days I'll get the nexus if it's available or the note 4.

So I hit a little buyers remorse over the past day or two. I even tried to switch out for the Note 4, but it would cost me around $100 extra due to restocking fees and activation fees and blah blah. Maybe this will help.
The battery has been good. One charge a day keeps it going, and the turbo charge is spectacular. I'm coming from a SGS3 with a ZeroLemon 7000mAh battery, so I have to keep reminding myself that the battery life just wont compare.
The screen is beautiful, even if it is over saturated.
Ballistic Nylon FTW. Never had a phone where I don't immediately want to slap a case on it, although in my profession, it really really needs one.
Replacement screen is something every company should offer at least one time. I still hate microscratches, but it definitely gives me piece of mind that I don't have to run out and get a screen protector.
The camera is at least an upgrade.
Capacative buttons aren't really all that bad.
I made-do with a 32 gig micro sd card in my S3 for two years, so I guess I don't need expandable storage.
It really likes to go fast.

Lolz. Every forum on XDA fills up with complaints. The people who are enjoying their phones, which are usually the majority, are out doing other things. This is normal - I've been on here since 2006 and its always been like that. Squeaky wheel...

Coming from a GS4 which I never really liked. I was missing my Galaxy Nexus goodness! I think the Turbo will serve me for quite a while as long as we get the bootloader unlocked.

I love this phone. I have had zero issues with it so far. Coming from an S4 this thing is amazing. Still learning stuff about it

I was so happy when Cyanogenmod made on screen navigation buttons with the correct android layout an option. I can't stand that Samsung has switched them around from what Google intended. So in all, this has been an easier transition for me than most Samsung owners.
