Buying Epic 4G off of Amazon - Epic 4G General

Quick question, I'm a little confused.
I want to purchase my phone as part of an upgrade (I should be able to upgrade my phone at this point). Can I do this on Amazon? It seems like I can only purchase it out of contract or with a brand new contract. Is it possible to grab the phone at $149 and just have it apply as an upgrade to my current contract (extend my contract another 24 months)?
Thanks!

Who is still on contract and has pre-ordered?

The reason I'm asking is because I see a lot of people pre-ordering and they say it's $199. I wanted to see if anyone was still on contract or would still be on a contract by the time the Evo comes out. I wanted to see if the people on contract were still getting the phone for $199 from BB or the shack. I know the $199 is for a $150 discount with a 2 year plan and an up-front $100 rebate.
On-contract as in "not eligible for an upgrade?" I know that RadioShack is not taking pre-orders for full retail purchases, and Best Buy is gouging the price to $600 for those not on contract. I'm going to pre-order from Sprint when they start accepting in-store (some places actually already have).

I wonder what would be the price if I tell BB that I'm contract now but I want to renew (restart my 2yr contract). Would they just take $100 off the retail price? Guess I have to go in to BB sometime tomorrow to see how this all works. Maybe I'll try the shack as well.
Can they really inflate the price that high when retail (According to sprint) is suppose to be $450? I guess Sprint will have to take my money then and I'll have to wait 10-14 weeks for a rebate.

The $100 rebate is only for new contracts and people with their 22-month full upgrade. The 12-month (non-premier) upgrade is just $75 off retail.
And yes, Best Buy can gouge all they want to.
Under Contract with TMO
I'm under contract with T-Mobile but with still 5 months left. Going to terminate the contract (only $100). Rather cough up the money than continue to use my G1 for the next five months. I want the Evo NOW.
Same here. I'm upgrading from my hero (which I got in December ) so I think your better seeing the device in a sprint store then buying it full out.
im dropping my plan to the lowest ($20/mo.) on vzw and already preordered from radio shack

what about ppl adding another line? I pre paid on the phone already and would go back and get my money if I can't get the phone by adding another line. None of my other 2 lines are able to upgrade since I just did that 6 months ago.

Adding another line is considered a new activation therefore you would get the phone for $199.
Where is everyone getting this 600$ quote from. At my BB the guy said he "thinks its like 600" which means that he was going off the rumoured off contract price.I don't see BB raising the price of a phone higher than it's MSRP.

Oh you don't? Go to Best Buy and try to buy a Hero or a Moment off contract and enjoy paying $600 or $630, respectively!
I preordered as a current customer without an upgrade available for my phone number. I just upgraded another line on my account, and will swap hardware after I have the phone in my hand.
could somebody help me figure this out a bit?
i have the HTC Hero, bought and signed with a new 2 year contract in november 2009.
so is there any way i could get the $199 price on the evo? i think you can get the EVO but you have to sign another 2 year contract even though i'm only 6 months in?

No. You are stuck paying the full price. I am a smart one though. I had a Sprint account back in the day, left with good standing. I ran into credit issues and about a year back had to pay a deposit so I just went on my father's plan with my fiancee instead. Well, I just got my Hero in October, 2 yr contract. Called up Sprint. They told me to get the Evo in my name, new account with a new phone number. Then afterward, get my dad and transfer my Hero line into my account. I get the 2 yr new activation price for the Evo, I keep my number and I don't have to pay the ETF. Life is f-ing sweet!

If I understand this right, aren't you still left with paying for 3 lines, yours, your fathers' and your fiancee's?

Yes but I don't pay for those lines. The owner's of the lines do. I will now be on my own plan, by myself with no ties to them. This isn't the solution for everyone but I figured maybe if someone is in the same situation it may help them.
Radio Shack would not let me upgrade, because I am not eligible until June 1st for upgrade. I just went over to Best Buy and signed right up.
Also, the rep at Radio Shack was not clear as to whether or not I would get the phone on Launch day or not. The Best Buy mobile manager told me for sure that I would get it then. I wanted to try Radio Shack first, simply because of the $20 of free accessories, but hey, you win some, you lose some.
then again, in the case of the Evo, I think we all win
It's like they timed this specifically for Palm Pre Premier owners... Friggin awesome.

If you go through sprint, you'll probably have to renew your 2 yr contract so that it starts up at June 4th, or whenever you get the EVO. You won't get the $150 upgrade discount, but you'll get the $100 mail-in-rebate though.
I believe this is what you'll go through because this is what I'm thinking will happen for me. I too bought the Hero in Nov. 09. But in the past when renewing a contract, Sprint has always just restarted my contracts when I wanted a new contract.
Do to the retail cost that BB and the shack might, I'm going to go through sprint, but not the sprint store. If you go through the sprint store, you'll have to pay the $36 activation fee. Most of the phones that you buy online through Sprint, don't charge an activation fee, so I'm thinking (hoping) this will be through for the EVO when they start selling them online.
I'm still on contract and pre-ordered with best buy, was quoted $199

Getting AT&T discount while still in middle of contract

I usually suck at getting these kinds of things, so thought I would ask first before trying, to see if there are any tips for things I should be saying.
I want to get the Streak, but I renewed my 2 year contract with AT&T back in January of this year. So I still have a year 3 months left on my contract. I know that I can get an early contract renewal with a fee of $75, but that is usually straight through AT&T. I tried to go through Dell, and was told I can't get the $250 discount because I'm still on contract.
Has anyone managed to do early renewal at all through AT&T and get the discount for the Streak? I would really appreciate any help on this. My Tilt 2 was OK and everything, but I want something with more...OMPH.
So just sell your current phone on eBay and order a Streak. Your sale = the carrier subsidy you seek.
Best wishes,
Geoff
Well, considering the original plan was get subsidy and sell old phone so Streak only costs me about $150 to $200, this sort of puts a monkey wrench in that. The main reason I'm not just buying it without is the wife factor.
My contract isn't up until January 2011, I bought my Streak and got it for $299. Must have been a glitch, I bought it the first day it was released.
That might be because AT&T usually lets people slide when within 6 months of contract ending.

True but I can still upgrade with a discount in 3 months though. I've went to the store and upgraded a few months early and they changed my upgrade date. I'm not complaining though.

get mytouch 4g with contract or buy it straightup?

i currently got an upgrade on my line for the mytouch 4g. i don't know if i should return it and buy the phone instead. being stuck two years with the data plans kinda scares me. i was on even more plus before when i had my nexus one and it felt better to know i can cancel my data plan whenever.
one of the reason i signed a contract was because i'm in a family plan with my parents. since they've already signed a two years contract, i have to wait for another two years before i can be on my own.
so i'm thinking, which one is better for me? even tho i wasn't on a contract before, i still have to wait two years for my parents contract to expired. so it basically the same thing without the data plan add on. (except they added another 5 to my account now. the data plan was only 25 dollars before. now it's 30.)
should i return the phone and just buy it outright? but i don't think tmobile sells insurance if you just buy the phone tho. it kinda risky knowing that it could break down any second.
thanks in advance.

Tmo does offer insurance. As for your plan, you could try calling and talking with customer retention and tell them you are ONLY thinking of returning it. They might offer you a deal where you return it and get one from them directly (got mine for $99, and the plan for $20).
If you got that deal and canceled down the road , you would still be better off than simply buying the phone full price now ($99 plus cancellation charge is less).
Good luck
thanks! i've just called them and the lady there was willing to put my data plan back down to 25 dollars and offered one month free of data. she seem nice and helpful, so i don't want to give her a hard time and push more.
I bought mine off contract. They give you 20 months to pay @ 0% interest.
So, if you pay the $199 + tax on the full price that is approx. $250...
I paid $450 + tax ... approx. $500
The subsidized plan that I am on would be $79/month, but I am paying only $59 with no contract... a difference of $20 a month.
My monthly phone payment is about $25/month..... buying outright is cheaper than contract pricing for the full 2 year term:
Subsidized price after 2 years = $199 price + $50 tax on full purchase price +$480 (24 x $20 more for subsidized plan) = $729 + ongoing $20 month more after 2 years that is not paying for anything... just gravy for the carrier.
Full purchase price = $450 + $50 = $500. cancel anytime. sell phone. walk away.
In addition, I also got them to give me a $90 credit on my account... basically getting the sales tax back and activation fee refunded... AND they don't start billing for the phone until 2011.
**This is of course if you stay with the same phone and plan for 2 years and you don't change your plan once your contract is up.
I bought it straight up also, no contract
Same hers. Straight up

straight up, i think i may return it though and buy it straight up from costco for 399.99 unless tmobile price matchs

sure they will, jsut say you want to buy it with a even more plus plan...they will open the plan for you...as soon as you leave the store, call tmobile and cancel the plan.... easy
I've bought both my G2 and MT4G from tmobile straight up. Both are on installment plans. Sold the G2, and now debating about the MT4G. I like the fact that we can pay ~$20 a month for the phone rather than $500 out right. The only time I feel I wished I had a plan with equipment discounts is when they do BOGO, other than that, I like the cheaper monthly rates.
I still think a good price on the phone ($99-149) and plan from retention is the best (unless you have one of those vintage $4.99 plans that some are still using on N1's).
As long as you are using the phone and plan going forward, you are ahead (assuming your data plan would be either lower than your current plan or not much more). If you want to eBay it - then you would have the cancellation charge. Combined with a good phone price, you are still ahead.
And if you were going to stay with the TMo data plan anyway - you would be way ahead.
I had even considered getting TMo to unlock the MT4G (I always do), and keeping my N1 and selling it on eBay.
With it rooted, am now probably looking at eBaying the N1 and keeping this.

How does tmo Upgrade work

I wanna upgrade down the so I wanna know how the discount system work cuz don't wanna pay full price
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
To quote directly from My T-Mobile:
Your phone upgrade eligibility is determined by the amount of time that has passed since your last upgrade, as well as the monthly cost of your rate plan.
You'll get our best upgrade pricing if it's been 11 months or more since your last upgrade (if you have a one-year service agreement), or 22 months or more since your last upgrade (if you have a two-year service agreement).

I'm currently on a family plan with 3 other family members. I recently upgraded my phone so if I attempt to upgrade MY line for ANY phone I HAVE to pay the full MSRP: $399.99 for the Vibrant, $499.99 for the Vibrant 4G/G2, etc...even WITH a 2-year contract extension)
My aunt's line which has not been upgraded recently only forces her to pay the current prices of each phone with a new 2-year extension ($199.99 for the Vibrant 4G). It all depends on how you're willing to wait. But always know that most/all Android phones require a data plan of some sort. The options are limited online, but you can always go to a store and haggle prices of phones/plans
Buying outright is more cost for the phone upfront, it it is less cost for the plan. IT is always cheaper to go that way over 2 years, and you are not tied into a contract
I have not had a contract for over 4 years. I buy my phones off craigs list. Just check out the phone before you buy it. I have gotten my last 3 phones that way. Paid 200 buck for my vibrant.
If you have been a Tmo customer for a while (meaning several years and purchased at least 2 phones from them) You may be able to get something if you raise a little bit of a stink. They like to appease displeased customers and if you complain about something in an adult way, you can possibly get approved for an early upgrade.
A buddy of mine was able to get an early upgrade because he was not on an android device and was curious to see how much of an improvement in his mobile experience it would be to own one. So they allowed him to get a MT4G at the 2yr upgrade price.
I bought my vibrant full price the begining of Feb. and no contract. but then on Valentine weekend they were giving smart phones away for the weekend with 2 year contract. Needless to say my son needed a phone so I said what the heck. I ended up with a free mytouch 4g and my son a Vibrant. It ended up cheaper in the long run. But my MT4G sit's in my briefcase as I am having too much fun ROM'ing my Vibrant.
It's all in the timing as Tmobile is always having some kind of sale.

[Q] Best off contract price in Canada?

Given that I have a killer grandfathered plan on Rogers with 6 Gb data, and they will not, no way no how, let me keep it and do a HUP, I am seriously considering doing a full price purchase. Best I could do after spending a bunch of time with rententions is the offer to get a share everything plan discounted to $85. Over 2 years that is the same as buying the phone outright, and locks me back into a contract.
I am on Rogers in Canada, and want LTE so I would really like to get a Canadian variant SnapDragon Note 4. The best off contract price I have found is $799 (basically the same everywhere). Has anyone seen a better outright purchase price?
Maybe port your nunber to a different carrier? That way you'll be paying for the phone on contract.
I got my phone from Bell on 2-year contract for $175 and $10 increment of my monthly bill.
I just bought mine off kijiji for $800. It's the n910u. I have same Rogers plan and certainly ain't giving it up considering Rogers wants $130 a month for the same plan now.

Looking into that. Managed to talk them down from $130 to $85 for a "share everything" (what a crock) plan that included my 6 Gb, but that is still the same as buying the phone over 2 years. If I am going to have the spend the money I might as well keep my grandfathered plan and the freedom of a carrier free, unlocked phone.
Yep I told them to shove it. And I told them I'll give someone else the $800-900 for the phone so they won't make any money off of that either
how did you guys pay so little? Did you buy it this last week? When i got it the day it came out it was $299 at Bell

We are talking about monthly plan costs. We both have grandfathered Rogers plans that are a lot cheaper than current in market plans. Rogers recently has drawn a line in the sand and insists on people switching to a in market plan when doing a HUP (hardware upgrade). The current cost of the equivalent plan is around $150... I am paying $64.
Due to this I am looking at buying a Note 4 outright, to keep the plan, if I decide to stay with Rogers.
with the 910u you gonna get the lte...no problem there!!! it have all the band needed for the north America.....however you could get the Canadians variant 910W8 for the same price too.... your choice!!!!
