[Q] Next Android release - Android Software Development

Do you think Gingerbread will be a 2.x update or 3.0 update? There are rumors surrounding both. What do you think and why?
I know 3.0 is being made to support tablets, and gingerbread is only going to be available for high-end devices.
Many rumors speculate that the next release will be anywhere from 2 weeks from now until Christmas. It's pretty much guaranteed to be released in 2010 though.

To be honest, in my own uneducated opinion...
..I think we will see a glimpse in 2010 before christmas, perhaps even a working version on prototype hardware. But a released version wont happen until 2011.
Im hoping they take there time with it.
And please for the love of friking god will they finally make openGL use mandatory regardless, there are too many good phones with dedicated hardware being wasted ><

Android 2.1 in Q4

Cant believe that im the first to post this here. Enjoy
http://www.xperiax10.net/2010/05/05...ndroid-2-1-and-hd-video-recording-in-q4-2010/
SE again take too much time.
We might see other handset makers moving to 2.3 when SE release 2.1 update.
Ya, also just thought of this.....no 2.2 means no adobe flash???
Hope they address the battery issue first it just drains on my x10
Sent from my X10a using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Found this on the forum there. And yes they do plan a near future update to address some performance issues and more specifically the battery issues.
http://www.xperiax10.net/forum/firm...a-x10-to-get-uxp-upgrade-in-q4-2010-t177.html
I jsut can't believe that we still need to wait till Q4 while others already running 2.1 for some time already. SE really should speed things up a little bit! In Q4 X10 properly will be an out dated phone....
if we have custom ROMs until then I couldn't care less about official updates

I thought about that too but I have since found out that the flash plugin could possible be made available as an app from the market.
See here:http://http://androidandme.com/2010/03/news/adobe-details-flash-10-1-installations/
It makes sense as it was originally understood that you needed 2.1 to run flash and not 2.2 (Froyo).
I guess having 2.2 means it's preinstalled.
Time will tell!
I guess that as 2.2 is not fully released yet, it is difficult for SE to say how or if it could be implemented. I've had SE phones for years and they are always very wary about promising things before they know they can deliever.
But I do agree that in this more open and enlightened age, SE need to engage more with their customer base...
I've always had issues with the Linux community releasing far too many releases far too often..
Very true in regards to 2.2 not being available yet. On the positive side of things SE can very well change their minds and go with 2.2 (if available). At this point they can only promise 2.1 although they should bump the timeframe up. Rogers is coming with the Acer liquid e which is preinstalled with 2.1 so SE needs to take that into consideration and bump the date up at least to june/july.

SE could change their minds but I think that if they have announced 2.1 it will be because they are currently working on 2.1.
Just as SE originally announced 1.6 and they delayed and delayed until 2.x was released. The launch was delayed so much that we all thought 2.1 could possibly ship with the x10. However the reason for the delay was down to bugs e.t.c. I guess they expect more of the same with 2.1.
If they were to change their minds and bring 2.2, we'd be waiting until the end of Q1 2011.
I just hope they are planning to support the device beyond the 2.1 OS.
I think they have said that they will continue to provide updates during the phone's lifespan (whatever that is....) But I guess they want to develop against a stable platform and no doubt don't want to develop against 2.2 until all the initial bugs are ironed out....
Hopefully they will speed up their development cycles, 6 months to migrate to a new baseline is far too long for their flagship device.....

Yeah X20 with 2.2 by the time all other phones are on Android 3.x
It's as if SE is only doing 'minimal effort' for their customers.

No doubt!
They should have make it into 2 releases for 2.1: 2.1 w/ all existing features/SE apps + bug fixes tested by mid year (June-July time frame) and another one with all those nice and new apps + features in Q4. That way we can be on par with the other (newer) Android phones sooner.
They should hire me as their release manager
On the other hand there is no incentive for SE to keep up the pace for X10 when they will announce newer phones later this year/early next year

Well the 2.2 isn't even mentioned, i doubt we will get it in this year.
BTW, great news, so we will get the 2.1 somewhere near september, not bad.
We are of course very glad to offer this upgrade earlier than originally planned. Xperia™ X10’s position will also be further strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

oh yea, makes sense
I've heard that they will skip froyo and move on to gingerbread anyway, but that is just pure speculations/rumors as always ^^
I really wish I could believe them when they say Q3...
The good thing is that we have a fairly functional Donut, we could've been stuck on a stock version and that would've been painful. When you avoid the cool but oh so slow stock apps like Timescape and add some stuff from the market it's a really nice OS.
What would be awesome though was if we could get vanilla images without all the extra stuff bolted on and the ability to customise it fully. But without root that's not gonna happen. :/
Sounds like the root news has scared them abit lol
Nice move SE
That's good to hear. I see where SE is going with this. Previously they planned one big 2.1 update on Q4 but after receiving numerous complaints they divided it into "2 phases" updates in Q3 and Q4. It’s clear from the announcement that the promised DLNA support along with other features will be postponed until phase 2 on Q4.

Don't you just love how NOTHING about that small update was mentioned? Did they just stop with that one all together, or what?
great news!!! seems that SE started to listen to the market and customers. love SE!!!
so the first rollout will be september 30th! Just keep that in your mind and you will be ok!
Hopeful, but im still doubtful. Time will tell so lets hope they get it right.

* Apologies. I am aware that we haven’t followed up on the post re smaller software update that Sumit did a couple of weeks ago. We will get back to you with more info on this very shortly (read very shortly)
Wouldnt that be a little info?
At least it sounds like they're starting to listen to their customers "a little".
To survive on the market they have to provide smaller, faster update cycles. It's the new model to stay competitive. Releasing monolithic updates that take forever just doesn't work anymore because there are so many other alternatives available and people don't have to wait. They'll just move on and then all the work put into the update is wasted because no one is using your product.
So fingers crossed.

That's not how SE thinks and works. A more obvious explanation would be the Release of the X8 , so they try to push the Phone ASAP to the market and as both Phones, with slightly differences , have the same Specs they try to get the X8 on the market WITH Android 2.1 , so they have to hurry up and as they do 2.1 for the X8 they spend the update to the X10 a bit earlier. SE learned how the market reacted to their release of the X10 with Android 1.6 and I'm almost sure they won't do the same mistake with the X8.
SE is pushing new Models to the market very quick and they want to sell them all. When we get 2.1 we can be happy because i don't see a further Release of 2.2 or higher for the X10 , this will be exclusive for their new Flagships.
All android phones shall be getting updates.
The only way flagships shall differ will be through hardware.
From a reliable source.

Gingerbread? Already?

well, it was always destined to come out before the end of the year, whether the article is correct about the October date is anyones guess.
People have already learned their lesson with how long it took Froyo to come out...
I wouldn't expect Gingerbread any earlier than December with the time Google needs to keep updating it before eventually releasing it.

Don't forget, Google did say that after Froyo they would begin a 6month till next update period, where updates wouldn't come out for 6 months. I figure June (when froyo was released) is 6 months from December so technically it still fits googles model.

The article repeats rumors knocked down by Dan Morrill
Re release date:
When will other Google products support WebM and VP8?
WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements.

Well we might start seeing Gingerbread in October, but probably officially rolls out in December. Sounds about right.
Funny how the article lists phones which meet the requirements but neglect to include Google's Flagship Nexus One.
Currently there are only a handful of devices with these types of specifications, among them the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire.

Pretty big unconfirmed rumor at this point but it wouldn't be surprising after what happened with 2.0 and 2.1.
I find that a little concerning, unless the only actual difference relates to single/dual core compatibility. The reason I rolled back from Gingerbread to Froyo was because some of my apps weren't Gingerbread ready. I hope the difference isn't significant enough to cause a gap like this.
That's interesting to say the least, not exactly welcome news to hear of google telling phone manufacturers not to update.

Is it really that big of a deal? Seriously we will have before any manufacturer upgrades to it and April is really not that far off. I just feel sorry for the CM team and others that have been endlessly working on GB Roms. I see this upgrade as a good thing and it says some of the elements of Honeycomb will be brought to the 2.4 smartphone version. Why complain if there is nothing you can do about it but wait patiently and be happy you have a great phone. Google, HTC nor Sprint are obligated to update your phone, so just be happy that they do.

If google tells htc to not update to 2.3, and 2.4 isn't due out till april, then that pretty much guarantees that the Evo will reach it's eol on froyo. It still take a couple months after the updates released for it to be used
With a source like Pocket-lint it has to be "who the hell are they?"
No, really. I've never heard of these guys.
You wanna buy a bridge?
Well I heard they are killing the 2.4 release to solve the multi-screen issues, by releasing Android 2.5 "troufles" in July. So named because of the layers of screen, not shrooms ( did you get that big "G" ? )
And our long wait gets longer.
I'm LoL'ing at people who blindly believe the OP.

good find. Lets hope they realize that 2.3 is a waste and to skip to 2.4 gingerbread with dual core capabilities
If they packaged it with a bootloader unlock they could make a lot of folks long time motorola users. I love everything else about my phone. Can live with it either way but I can dream

What daveop said. As of now, I would totally be willing to go through switch carriers after this. This better be a worthwhile update (or updates, which ever is faster).
I wonder if it'll still be a Motoblur based update...
It doesn't make sense for motorola to remove blur. They actually advertised the "feature". If they remove it, lots of people will complain (not us, but we are on a different demographic)
So, don't get your hopes up, expect blur. And don't expect 2.4 either, we already know they are working on 2.3. 2.4 doesn't even have a release date yet people.

I just want an unlocked bootloader. The Dev's are better at maximizing the phone's potential than the manufacturers.

Hopefully by "Later this year", they don't mean December or so.
Realistically speaking if you want 2.4 on a phone, you will have to get one of the newest phones coming out - Galaxy S 2 etc. This phone wont see that until next summer at earliest.

Knowing moto, they're gonna wait as long as possible, so December 31st at 11:59pm.
However, if you live in Canada (like me), they'll give us a later date, then lie about it.
So for us it would be early q1 of 2012, but then at early q1 of 2012, the update still isn't given (this is what's happening with the milestone right now, it was suppose to get 2.2 at early q1 of 2011, and they still didn't give us 2.2, and early q1 is over already).

well that's funny, considering that when you look at what manufacturers release updates, Motorola is #2, only behind HTC.
I'm also betting AT&T will get better about updating now that iphone exclusivity is gone. I think the captivate froyo update is soon if not already around, and the Aria is getting froyo soon too.
From what i understand motorola was one of the faster manufacturers to get out updates.....anything will be better than samsung....my captivate is just now getting official froyo and its not even 2.2.1
