Increase Signal? - Vibrant General

I'm not talking about the image of the signal, I'm talking about the actual signal. My Vibrant seems to be getting horrible reception in places that I normally get great reception. Is there a new radio or a setting somewhere that I can change? I'm getting almost no signal with 3g on, but decent signal with it off.
Thanks in advance.

Flash the JI6 radio, i get flawless reception inside buildings etc.

Is there a simple way to do this? Without ODIN?

Someone needs to explain the difference between 3g and edge.

I know that shouldn't make a difference, I'm just saying.

Yes it will. T-Mobile's edge network is stronger than their 3g network. They basically have two different networks.. unlike ATT.

Is the new J16 radio been packaged to a zip alone?

I would also like to see the JI6 modem packaged in a standalone update zip file. I'd love the update without installing a new buggy rom and I don't trust Odin, already bricked me once.

Bionix 1.5 comes with the JI6 modem and it is not buggy at all. It is very close to stock with minor tweaks for performance. I suggest you use that. I've been using it without flaw.

If people flash that rom or any other rom for that matter won't they still need to odin back to stock to receive updates and 2.2 when it arrives? I myself prefer not to mess with odin either after reading some of the issues on here. Its one of the reasons why I have not flashed any roms and probably won't.

1. Ppl who have rooted will Most likely have a 2.2 update with dev sprinkles the first few hours after they get the source which someone will dump after getting the OTA or maybe sammy will be nice enough to make it available upon the OTA release.
2. ODIN does more good then harm. It is the only thing that can bring you back from a brick. As long as you read enough & understand what you are doing before being flash happy then you will see how great the development is & you will enjoy its benefits.

+1 for the JI6 modem!
And yeah it's sort of a given that you will likely have to flash back to JFD to be recognized for an OTA...
Just keep in mind HOW OTA's work. They're generally pushed out in batches of phones rather than all at once. All at once would just be unmanageable. On balance those of us who do routinely use Odin will be able to get the version pushed via OTA quicker than most...primarily because we're an impatient lot.
Even as simple as it is on the Galaxy S phones to do (given you do your homework of course) experimenting with firmwares isn't for everybody...

Tell that to my hardware disabled Vibrant that had to get exchanged out because it couldn't be unbricked. Not taking that risk again on a hardware locked Vibrant.
As for Bionix 1.5, I'm using 1.4 but if I understand correctly the BT issue won't be corrected until 1.6.

For some reason with the J16...I'm getting more bars in NYC Subway systems.. I can talk even longer before it cuts off...I know ppl are jealous lol

i definitely wouldn't go flashing any 'ole radio just because its available for other phones. proceed at your own risk everyone...his boost could easily be coincidence. youre not gonna get that much change.

This radio works fine on the Eris. Still, use caution when flashing it and if your phone explodes don't spam the dev forum asking for help.
No more not being able to make/receive calls as of yet. Also it seems my wifi tether works now but may have been the new ivan rom that came out.
I recommend against flashing non-Eris specific radios.
Do it at your own risk.

Yeah, that's not true dude. Flashing an incorrect radio update CAN completely brick your phone. Flashing a radio update updates your SPL. If the SPL isn't compatible with your phone/kernel, it could very well completely ruin your phone beyond recoverable.
You're lucky, but for future reference, it's a really bad idea to go flashing any ol' radio update except one that's been tested and working with your phone and kernel.

This is why I felt comfortable with flashing the radio...
The ONLY reason I flashed this radio is due to the fact that others did this with no bad side effects (so far). Also, toastcfh has tested other heroc radios on an Eris with no bad side effects (so far) as well as done some good research for us by flashing the radios and seems to be quite knowledgeable when it comes to them.
I'm not authorizing that you should go flashing "any 'ol radio" but heroc and desirec radios seem to be created with the intention of being used on Sprint and Verizon according to research by toastcfh.
toastcfh said:
now for the question about why some radios say heroc instead of eris...
the heroc radio are just that... heroc radios from sprint. its a cdma radio so it works the same as verizon radio. dont believe me?! do a strings | grep on all the radios and u will see they are all using both sprint and verizon logins and such. also as right now im running the latest radio which is the heroc one. everything works fine and its the one ive had best results with on both my Sprint Hero and my wifes Verizon Eris. although others may find better results with other versions.

I believe that was/is a bug with the nexus lock mod. I remember when lwp mod first came out I tried it and noticed the sim card message. I have not gone back to that since so I can't be 100% sure.

Is anyone experiencing any issues with this one, I have flashed this radio and my 3G signal is not as good as it used to be.
I have 2 Eris' one stock (baseband 2.32.40.11.09) and one rooted with 2.42.00.03.10. The stock gets 4 3G bars with -70dBm while the rooted Eris gets 2 or less bars with -52 dBm.
From what I'm seeing, 3G speed is also suffering on the Eris with the newer baseband. Can anyone make sense of this?

yeah that's what doesn't make sense to me. the rooted phone says it has a better signal strength, but I'm only getting 2 3G bars (at most!).
I would like to test it but I am unable to find the original 2.32.40.11.09 radio image.
@above
metering has changed in more recent radios. aka bars vs signal strength is different.
soooo is this a yes or no go for flashing?
I tried this out, no noticeable difference in signal strength or speed where I am. Flashed it back to the newest ERIS radio...

PRL messing with my phone signal

okay im running pancake 1.5 and i have the latest prl version. i noticed my signal is worse now than before and it drops out alot. could there be a fix for this? maybe roll back to a previous prl? im also noticing the phone gets laggy at times, then i loose the evo icon, then it comes back after 30 seconds.... idea's???

the stock one for 1.5 i guess, i haven't installed any other ones. im currently flashing your 2.1 rom...do you recommend a custom radio?
You can always revert you just have to find someone that has the old PRL file.. If you give me a little bit, I might be able to find that for you on my old service computer.. It crapped out last week so I don't know if I still have it or not..
The PRL lets the phone know how it is supposed to interact with roaming towers, so if the updated PRL removed a tower near you, due to contract or whatever, you are most likely having your issue because of that.. Also, if it adds a tower that previously wasn't in your PRL, you could be polling between the two, back and forth with no solid connection, that would explain the EV drop..
Also, if the output was decreased for whatever reason, you could just be too far away from the tower...
Give me a little while, and I will PM you if I can find a way for you to revert. I am pretty sure you have to have RMS so you might not be able to with my file..

Yea definitely upgrade the radio. They actually aren't custom radios, just ones stripped from newer roms or phones.
Check http://geekfor.me/radio for the list. The newest one out is http://geekfor.me/radio/radio-242000310/ which 90% of people have better battery life and signal quality. However depending on where you live and what equipment is used in your area, that isn't always the cost. Most of the people who aren't using 2.42 are using this one http://geekfor.me/radio/radio-241040203/

Because, as I have said numerous times before, and no one listens, the service you are getting is dependent on your a)location b)distance from tower c) PRL (for roaming and interconnectivity with other towers)..
The only thing the radio does is manage the signal power input and output of a device..
yeah im going back to the stock radio, the 2.1 radio signal was far worse.
Ive noticed just after the other day my phone roams almost constantly, I have the 60664 PRL and yet it still roams even in my own house. What can I do?

Ota 1.47.651.1 pulled

OTA 1.47.651.1 has been pulled as it is bricking some phones. Sprint has a internal notice floating around but I just figured that I should post this incase anyone was wondering.
Thank you for posting this. I was following the forums all day to see how the OTA was affecting rooted and non-rooted. It's ironic (and very unfortunate) that most stock users are getting bricked. Sprint not off to a good start with the EVO.
LOL much like the Hero.
I updated after monitoring, having only previously ran unrEVOked for wifi tether. Lucky for me, all is well.
Sprint is honestly not just off to a bad start with this phone, they're pretty much off to an awful start with it. Can't keep stock, can't replenish stock, bricked stock phones after OTA updates.
Not good problems to have.
I would bet it was a very small percentage that was having issues. From what I saw it was the fantom second update that was causing the problems. Anyway, some of the folks who know what to do with it, have it to take apart and use for the good of the rest of us.
Yippi!
-Roger
most non rooted getting bricked. prove it
I'm pretty glad I got mine. Helped my 4g strength somehow. I was dropping and switching back and forth (3g to 4g) and now I have full bars and drops to two bars every now and then. Also, phone works just as perfectly as before. I haven't rooted and won't until all of the kinks are worked out.

Not keeping stock is not really a bad thing for Sprint. They're just selling a ton of Evo's. And I don't think it's Sprint's fault for not getting new devices in (more likely HTC or the manufacturers) and the OTA is from HTC. Sprint would be fine if HTC could get their act together, although most of the problems are few and far between.
Is the update file available somewhere? It's still legit. I had the option to update today at work but signal was bad so I waited until I got home. By then the update got pulled and I no longer had the update option. I'd like to get the new update on my phone since I heard it improves battery life considerably.
My money is that the phone bricking was a result of non-patient users who didn't let the update finish and/or those who blindly hit "accept" without doing the slightest amount of reading (like checking the version number vs. what they already have on the phone).... ie. Those who ran the update twice.
No root, no problems. I updated when it first came out. Haven't noticed anything different.

Experiencing missing calls

I had this problem since SC roms but now I have Evil froyo rom and having alot more missing calls. My friend told me that he called me three times but didnt get any....i really dont care about the multimedia but phone calls!!!! phone should functioned as it should be but its not...so anybody knows how to solve this problem...?? I tried to do *228 thingy but still doing this...
What radio/modem are you using? Try using ED04, if you're not already on it. I had your problem before and ED04 seemed to help.

Go back to eclair with ea28 radio. There is no froyo rom/radio free of this issue currently available. I have tested all radios available right now and had missed calls on all of them. ED04 made it even worse actually.
I've tried numerous radios, roms, and kernels and am currently on stock ED04 with the same issues. I think ED04 is actually worse on my phone as well. I've read about quite a few people having the same problem and the overall consensus is that it's a hardware issue.
For ****s and giggles, Odin the EC09 radio. I personally use it and find it to be pretty nice, much faster data speeds, and it MAY fix your issue.
It's not a FroYo deal, it's a network issue. My wife's Fascinate is still on DL09 and she has missed calls too. A lot of people believe it is an issue with LTE affecting 3G, since the problems started popping up around the same time LTE was flipped on
Call and complain... They know it's a known issue, but they are not fixing fast enough. It's pretty sad. I miss calls from the wife and boss... You may even get the droid charge...

Yeah I did call and they offered me another Fascinate, Droid X or D1 so nothing that I could accept. The only upgrade that makes sense available right now would be Charge but had no luck convincing them. Right now I'm testing EC09 leak modem and so far all calls came through (as far as I know) but it was just 2 days so it's too soon to know if it helps or not.
They won't offer me jack... Am I saying something wrong? Hahaha
This freakin issues is pissing me off since i got this VZN fascinate imported here in India ,
and its not NETWORK its just bloody FROYO and FASCINATE , somehow all froyo ROMS have got this crap issue.
i have started inumerable threads about so many ROMs and setups but this issue always keeps coming back.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the GB roms wont have this bug..
Just to keep myself connected i have yesterday flashed back to dl09 debloated and using ed04 ( i know its full of crap this modem is , but i am giving it a shot with dl09 and so far in last 24 hours havent missed a single call.
I'm on hold with VZ tech support right now, I can't stand this bug anymore.. I'm trying to find a new job so I can't afford to be missing calls
edit: they're sending me a new fascinate.. might just have to buy another phone and use my fascinate as an mp3 player
Trying out the EC09 (gingerbread) radio.. I may not know anything for a few days.
I have been having this problem every since I started using froyo
if I switch back to eclair it is gone
It is not in the radio
It has to do with the phone going in a deep sleep it will not wake up
The deep sleep is causing other issues with sms, mms, alarm not working when set all because it will not wake up
Alot of problems Same cause
The only way I have found to stop this is go to Eclair

and then again shutdown and ODIN CWM and without booting install SU first via recovery
boot up
shutdown

Been using it for couple days. Nothing new to report, went back to ED03. If we could just get the stability of GB 3G signal I would be a very happy camper.
+1 for the EA28 modem, at least for my phone in a VZW marginal reception area where 1x reigns supreme. Easy to get the missed calls, by attempting calls during bootup, sleep-wake, busy with GPS/aGPS, etc.
In my particular case, ED04 made things worse. EC09 was much much better. EA28 had the least missed calls as far as I can tell (n=1). YMMV.

Updating to MJA for data speed improvements?

OK, so in my area of work, LTE speeds have been way down for the last couple weeks or so. I'm talking around 500k/s download speeds, and that is on a good day. Around home I get 20mb/s which I feel is good for the area, and around 30-35mb/s at my girlfriends house
I'm still on MF9 baseband and firmware. Would going thru the steps to update to MJA have any affect on my data speeds? I've already kinda deducted that it's the area I'm at that is the cause of the slow network speeds, even though its not out in the boondocks, (northside Indianapolis, IN).
So yeah, pretty much just curious about any data speed improvements from updating to MJA baseband/modem/firmware yadda yadda.
If you flash the MJA modem you will lose sound, unless you're talking about the OTA?
Well I was considering flashing the MJA modem via Odin. I saw the post about how to flash just the modem in another thread, but I don't recall seeing anything about losing sound. Time to start researching whats going on with that.
Have people had that issue when doing upgrading to full MJA (rom/firmware) then going back to a 4.3 aosp rom? Seems like im gonna have fun borking my device tonight!
Thanks!
Your phone is obviously LTE capable. Your actual network speeds are a function of Sprint and flashing an updated modem isn't going to make Sprint any faster, just as switching to a different brand of gas isn't going to give you any more horsepower.
That's not true. I'm not saying it will change it in his case.... and while it wont change what sprint is putting out itself, different modems often affect data speed. And it's often different for every phone and area.
In the year and a half I owed a e4gt, there must have been more than a dozen modem releases. Everyone had their favorites. I had fav one for GB, one for ICS, and another for JB that gave significantly improved speeds and service over the other options.

I had the e4gt myself and I have never noticed a significant difference with any modem that was not attributable to the quality of my connection to sprint. I found that most claims of better performance with a different modem turned out to be more of an anomaly or wishful thinking, at least for me. Likewise with my s3 and s4. I maintain that an updated modem is not going to give you significant improvement by itself, unless the previous version was particularly bad. I have never seen one that was.
You are in the minority in your opinion.

to the OP:
I like to listen to a radio station while i shower in the morning before work. In this part of my house only certain modems on the e4gt would get wifi coverage. There are bars that i would like to eat at where only certain modems would get data access to. I would keep a bunch of flashable modems on my sdcard for when ever I got stuck.
The radio in the S4 seems to be very much better than the e4gt. They may not be able to improve it much with new modem upgrades. I know i will test them out myself though....

I myself have seen an increase in speeds, not sure why but, I went from 8Mb to 18Mb since MJA.
