128kbs is the same as 16KB/s so that's about right for EDGE.
I get 38kbs over here and that's on EDGE, your data is over 3x faster than mine. I don't feel bad for you lol.
Edge speeds are going to be all over the place. Yours is actually not bad. For example, my Edge speeds here in Atlanta (on the rare occasions that I don't have 3G) are really fast - so fast that I don't even notice the lack of 3G. When I go to my in-laws' in Ohio, I want to punch someone in the face because of the slow Edge speeds.

well we have a company out here called flow and they offer internet through optic fibre cables which can give rich people up to 100mbps its unbelievable
the normal connections are like 2, 4, 8, 10, 20, and 54mbps i believe.
its a company that provides landline cable tv(optic fibre) and HIGH speed internet

He wasn't talking about your ISP's speed, he was saying he didn't think the G1 could go that fast on WiFi, that it stalled out around 4-5...
Which is about what I get. I have a 20MBPS optic internet setup myself, and my G1 only gets 5MBPS over WiFi on a really good day. That is after testing many different speednet servers. (Chicago is the fastest, even though it isn't the closest to me).
I have also gone to websites and run the test using those, and still maxes out at about 5MBPS.
When I have done this with my laptop, I usually get 19.XMBPS...
Edge: 182 kbps down, 42 kbps up.
3g: 2112 kbps down, 412 kbps up.
Wifi: 5226 kbps down, 4885 kbps up. I have a 20/20 mbit connection.

Okay this is a HUGE a huge disappointment to me. I have a Netgear b/g/n router and it seems to drop the N connection (where I get 3/4 bars) and return to the g connection (1/4 bars) and limits speeds to 5mbps. Please tell me I am not the only one with this problem and that it will be fixed. I know I've not heard this problem before...
P.s. I am sitting in the same room with my Xbox Slim and it maintains n the whole time, so no, I don't think its my router...

Ive heard some wireless routers advertised as N can only really support one wireless N connection at a time.

Why do you need "N" to work? Do you have internet speeds that fast? Are you getting dsl or cable running at 300mbps? I mean thats the only logic for wanting N on your phone, to have the internet be that fast. You do realize, the internet wont be any faster just because it travels over N vs G. If your internet is 10mbps, its going to be 10mbps over both G and N.
Recently my friend insisted that her new router be N, even though it was more expensive. She insisted she wants the fastest router. Then I said "You know...your home DSL is only 1.5mbps...having G or N won't matter, it will travel at 1.5mbps on G or N either way, you can't even max out G yet"
So my question to you is, why do you need N speeds coming to your phone. Are you under the impression this will make your internet faster? Is your internet speed 300mbps? If your internet is standard DSL or cable, you haven't even reached the top G speeds yet.
Is this making any sense?
I mean unless you do file sharing, thats a different story, but what kind of massive file sharing would you do between your phone and the router? LOL phones don't even hold that much information.
So even if they come out with Z technology thats 1 million times faster than current N, if your home internet is still standard DSL, doesn't matter if you run G/N/Z or any other alphabet letter.

Your car analogy made no sense. If you have a ford focus that tops out 85 mph, and a ferarri that tops out 260mph. However, you are limited to driving around at 30 miles per hour, doesn't matter which car you drive. Since you are limited to 30mph, the focus and ferarri are going to get you from point A to point B at the same time.
Same **** with G versus N on your vibrant. N can handle higher speeds, but if you are LIMITED BY YOUR DSL OR CABLE SPEED, THEN both will run at the same speed, until you max out G. The only way to max out G is to have dsl or internet that runs faster than G is capable of.
Again, only benefit of running N on your phone is for massive file sharing really fast, but your phone doesn't even hold that much info, so that makes no sense. Or the other benefit is getting signal at greater distances. Chances are your router that is running g/n is going to provide just as power a signal to your phone running G or N.

Lets see. First off, if you do any media streaming via wireless in your house, you want the higher speeds. Second, I like to vpn from my laptop to my computer (so I don't have to leave the couch). The difference in the smoothness when on an n network vs. a g network is very notable. Third... And probably most important in a setup like this.. A single g device connected to an n router will slow ALL the wireless devices on the network down to n speed, regardless of what they are communicating with. It is this very reason I have two separate access points. One to handle n traffic and one to handle b/g traffic. So unless he wants to allows his whole network down, he should probably try to stick with n.

btw, i'm on an N network and my browser on the phone really flies. might shoot down to g only and see if theres a difference or if the increase is because i'm coming from g1/mt3g.
edit: web browsing...not a huge difference, deff noticeable though. allshare on g only was not that good, took too long to start a song. I like my N! lol
People who say that you need a 300mbps connection at home to take advantage of Wireless N are just being silly. Not only is there better coverage with an N connection, but you will also have better speeds if you have a decently fast line (doesn't have to be over 54mbps even)-
I'm a Verizon FiOS user with a 25mbps symmetrical (same up and down) connection. The problem with many G routers is that although they say 54mbps its unlikely you're going to necessarily reach that under real conditions. For example the stock Verizon FiOS router actually limits my speeds a bit, to around 20mbps downstream. If you're trying to upload at the same time its going to be a little slower even. That's about all I can get, especially when further away from the router. However, with a new wireless N router which I've just recently installed, I can max out full 25mbps downstream, and even have the same going through upstream at the same time. The range of the signal is better, and it even seems as if latency is slightly lower (or there's less 'jitter' in general). Wireless N allows for much smoother connectivity, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a decently fast broadband connection.
Now having said all of that, you may not care about ~20mbps vs 25mbps (speed difference for downloads in my case) on a phone, and that makes sense as it probably can't even render pages fast enough to take advantage of that. But still, wireless N makes sense to have in general.
Its your router. Force it to use only N.
I find it slightly humorous that I feel compelled to justify WHY I want to connect via N. In future posts I will remember to justify all of my needs/desires first, I.e although I have a navigation system on my Yukon Denali, I dint have it in my Infiniti, so I want the gps to work.
Like others have said before, its faster when streaming videos, it has a much farther and stronger signal (i have a large house) etc. As to why I don't just force it to use n only, genius!.... I have a Wii, PS3, older xbox360, 2 desktops and 3 laptops depending on g. Currently only 3 devices on n. I like to share media. Is that enough of an explanation?
As I swype this response, I can see the wi-fi bar go from 1 bar to 3. It seems schizo.
On Speedtest, when I have n it pegs out at 10mbps, I can tell when its on g because it seems to tap out at 5mbps every time.
Again I just thought I would see if others have experienced similar issues.

I have come full circle my brothas! My wireless router has n on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Thus, I should be getting the n on my 2.4Ghz-only phone. Ah, but here is issue again! The reason, among few, that I bought the wireless a/b/g/n router in the first place was for the distance magnification inherent in wireless n. This, you see, is how I came upon the issue in the first place. 1 bar alone do I get with the b/g signal, but 3 bars pop up now and again for a short time making me believe that the phone cannot hold on to the n signal!
Alas, my 30 days with this phone are coming soon. I think I shall exchange it on the morrow...
Does anyone know how to see if the Vibrant is using N or G? I gather from the post you can check it doing a speed test, but the internet connection would be the bottleneck. I took am looking for N Wifi so that I can stream wirelessly.

My understanding is, If you have g devices active on your n network, your entire wireless network will be limited to g speeds. This may well be your culprit

i agree with ConceptVBS. i had a similar problem with a netbook connecting at G speeds. i changed my network to N-only and now everything connects at full speed.
not sure the whole network would be slowed by one b/g device. i have a blackberry (for work) that connects at G, but my wife's desktop still connected at N speeds (270-300 Mbs).

I think the AnandTech.com review said they got 72mb/s with it. It was the fastest phone/tablet they had tested over wifi by a mile.
I haven't tested the wifi connection, but as far as the internet connection on wifi goes, I was getting around 11mb/s, then a minute later I would get 1.5mb/s, then I would get a bunch of pages that wouldn't load.
What's the max you can get on WiFi? Isn't it 54mbps?

its rated at 72Mbps they only got 36Mbps out of it which is still fastest phone/ tablet they have tested. iPad was the leader with 30.something... Looks like the Optimus 2X also had 30.somethingalittlelower...
i can't get above 12-13 on phone or computer...
I get 19-20 mb/s with the tab on the same network.

that made me lol so i give you thanks. yea im not quite certain on how wireless tech works. Im just going by what i remember when I had xp and it told you bitrate down at the taskbar if you hovered or the wifi signal. When I had a wireless b/g router it always said 54mbps but when I got a wireless b/g/n router it said 128 mbps.
well the a/b/g/n bands are in both wifi bands of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz respectively. The a/n bands are in the 5GHz band, and it has a higher data transfer rate, but shorter distance. It goes thru brick walls easier tho.
wireless n can get anywhere from 130-160 realworld, and is capable of reaching 300mbps. but if your router has other devices on it that operate at any of the 2.4GHz bands, then you'll greatly decrease your speeds using n.

I Have Atrix with netrino rom 2.2ee. but general question anyone getting 150Mbps link speed thru there router? best i can get is 72Mbps and coworker has Atrix2 he gets 64Mbps.
Are you paying for 150mbps?! I don't even want to image THAT bill :O

How are you performing your test?I can't imagine a reliable test could even be performed on the atrix.
Even for my phone the results vary. The results on the speedtest.net app will be much different then visiting speedtest.net on the browser (obviously not default I use opera)
Anyways what type of service do you have?

You talking about your actual internet speed dl, or file transfer speed within your network? I cannot get 150Mbps through my router with file transfers. I max out at 25Mbps with my internet speed, but that's all the bandwidth I get anyway.
The speed depends on what the hardware is capable of. The 802.11n standard supports up to 300Mbps in theory. In theory because hardware hasn't been made that is capable of transmitting at that speed. And he is no doubt talking about through a local network. If he is talking about internet bandwidth, I envy him lol.

I am assuming the OP is referring to the modulation rate his phone is connecting to the router with. I don't know a lot about the wireless adapter in the Atrix aside from it being able to do 802.11 a/b/g/n. However, I am pretty sure the N capability of the wireless adapter has the highest modulation rate of 72Mbps when running on 1 chain in a 20Mhz channel (to my knowledge the Atrix only has one Wi-Fi antenna in it). So assuming you have a great Wi-Fi signal to your wireless router and low noise, 72Mbps is the highest modulation rate your phone will achieve. In order to achieve 150Mbps, the wireless access point you connect would have to be running in 40Mhz channels before the phone could benefit from the router's 150Mbps capability.
Since the Atrix is 802.11a capable, I bought a dual band router and reap the benefits of being the only one in my neighborhood using a 5Ghz capable router. While I only connect at best with 54Mbps, I can still gobble up 11Mbps down. Not too shabby.

If you want to shell out some cash you can get a router that in theory can reach 450Mbps with the matching adapter. I don't know of a laptop or other device that comes on the shelf with that type of adapter. The routers and adapters have a 3x3 setup, so if all three chains are enabled, and you live in a Faraday cage, you could theoretically get 450Mbps out of it. A bit extreme right now, as most people don't have a clue about the benefits of 5Ghz and using that for media like set top boxes home media streaming. LinkSys actually have a nice 4 port Wi-Fi adapter specifically for that. Plus in your PS3, XBox, satellite receiver and Popcorn Hour and you are good to go! No wires needed with the exception of the cables to the adapter.

But yeah, you're right............traditional wireless won't do it.
yea its plenty fast at the 72 i connect was just curious because the laptop connects at different speed. I have samba share installed so have a network drive from phone so just seeing if had any input. I did notice when looking in my router lastnight that when i connected at my 72 that it actually does go faster in burst. my router has dd-wrt so shows connected devices and stats i saw it change connection speeds up to like 110 briefly. so it should be good.
It may interest you that in the UK the government agency that polices advertising made the Wifi people take the speeds off their ads*. IRL none of the G access points ever made 54 MBps nor the B 11mbs. It is always the same, people quoting perfect condition maximums which are never achievable.

LinkSys actually have a nice 4 port Wi-Fi adapter specifically for that. Plus in your PS3, XBox, satellite receiver and Popcorn Hour and you are good to go! No wires needed with the exception of the cables to the adapter.

So the Atrix is 5Ghz capable? You said 802.11a.. It won't work at 802.11n in that frequency? It's so noisy in this area in the 2.4 range when I do a spectrum sweep there is no clean frequency. Im thinking of grabbing a 2.4 CPE with 36 dBm transmit power and place it on my kitchen counter. I'll blast every router in range out haha
Mine too. Both Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and SE Xperia Ray are all max out at 72 Mbps.
I connect to the 5Ghz frequency at my home everyday. Seems faster than the 2.4 connection. I can't comment on battery savings though.

I've noticed that my Note has been getting really slow wifi speeds. I've tried speedtest.net using the same server, and my laptop will consistently get around 18mbps, while my Note will only get 3mbps. My Samsung Infuse will get around 12+ mbps. I've tried turning wifi off and back on, but still not dice.
That's weird... Are you running a custom rom and/or kernal?

I thought it was just my imagination but when connected to wifi my connectivity is slow as treacle. Stock standard config with a few apps installed on my Note.
Anyone have any ideas please?
Seems Samsung just uses a very bad wifi chipset or useless antenna. This is a general Samsung issue but it has the worst wifi.

I've got no wifi issues whatsoever. How is the wifi on your computer/notebook? If you're running windows on your computer try this program: inSSIDer
You can determine which channel is the least crowded. You can also see which channel gives you the highest signal strength.

Totally agree ... its something related to the wifi hotspot and the channel you are using .... i get over 20 mbps upload and download over wifi .... i connect my note with my laptop using connectify ,, and my laptop is connected via LAN 100 mbps connection (yes its really 100 mbps , m in southkorea and speed here is just the best) my laptop gets around 100 Mbps on speed test.net but my note sticks around 20 mbps ....

If you see the same results with the Note close (same room) as the router then i suggest you fiddle with the router wifi settings.. pick a different SSID channel f'rinstance
FYI i get 16Mbps on the Note, and many users have reported up to around 50mbps or so..

I think some issues you don't even have to worry about, anything probably over 3 mbps you phone browser wont load the page any faster because of system limitations, the only thing wear you'll notice a different is downloading studff, but I don't see any time you would need to, I get about 20-30 mbps on my note, but the pages don't load any faster than my 3g which is normally around 3-4 mbps.

My Wifi is slow as molasses too. It's ridiculous. I'm not even sure what "change your ssid" even means. Would somebody be good enough to explain a little further.? It's ridiculous that I can't watch youtube on my Note while at home.

Ssid is the broadcast name of the wireless, so virginbroadband or whatever you see when you're searching for networks.
Selecting a different channel changes the spectrum that the Wifi uses. If you're in a crowded area, most people will use the default channel which means everyone's on the same spectrum and it can cause a lot of interference, so changing will often create a more stable bandwidth and therefor increase speeds.

Got the same problem, while my mate gets +50Mbit I only get 10 to 15Mbit on the same wifi.
Any idea how this comes?
