Confirmed! I got a code from unlockadic on EBay and now have my Vibrant on ATT! FU TMobile!
Could you not have just bought a captivate?
Sure, but wanted a Vibrant and got one used much cheaper. Plus, I don't have a contract and don't want to have one.

Yeah I am confused, what is the benefit of having a vibrant on AT&T as opposed to just getting a captivate? Aren't you basically running the same phone but without 3G?
We're all happy for you, not sure why though.
Plus, I need to use it out of the country and att wouldn't unlock the Captivate for 10 months, even if bought at full price. What do you mean no 3g? I am using 3g on it no prob.
Being that there have been several people wanting to unlock it without success, I figured I would let everyone know that this source is confirmed to work. If you aren't concerned, why bother posting that you don't care?

Really? That is interesting I have always been told that the tmo and AT&T 3G networks weren't compatible, and my unlocked mytouch has no 3G access.
Edit; It isn't that I didn't care I was just confused at the benefit of doing it considering the availability of nearly the same device on the network you are using it on.
maybe you should give Simple Mobile a try since it's unlocked. $60 a month for unlimited everything, no contract. An additional $10 gets you international calling. Sorta like Boost Mobile, except you supply your own unlocked GSM phone. There's a one time $12.99 fee to get their SIM.
I went this route with my daughter as I was able to get her a cheap used slider phone for practically nothing.
And the reason why this worked for him is the Vibrant supports the UMTS1900 band that AT&T uses. One of the rare T-Mobile phones that does.
I am confused how you are using 3G? ATT uses 850mhz band for their 3G and the Vibrant only is able to use 3G on either 1700mhz or 2100mhz. Am I missing something here?

Yep, 3g is working. The places I will be spending time in out of the USA don't have many options for service. Basically I buy prepaid sims and don't use data.
I have been with ATT so long that I still have the $15/mo unlimted data. Which is low enough to warrant leaving the account on while I am out of the country.
So to recap, ATT would not let me unlock the Captivate for 10 months even if I bought it outright. (I spent a long time talking to them to find this out as I was about to purchase a Captivate)
I do not want to get into a new contract
I need to use it out of the country.
I got a Vibrant used at a good deal.
That Simple Mobile looks like a good deal! If I didn't have the $15/mo unlimited data now, I would give them a shot.

I don't know but it is working. I have crappy service at my house (for all carriers) and it goes back and forth between "3G" and "E". When I have a descent signal, it sure seems pretty snappy so I believe it is 3G. I will try a speed test when I am in a good signal location. Aren't the Captivate and Vibrant the same hardware wise? Wouldn't it make sense that it would work with ATT 3G if that is the case?
They area similar hardware but the radios are carrier specific. I am pretty sure it won't work on 3G on ATT for the same reason the iPhone doesn't work on T-Mo's 3G. You must be seeing some sort of glitch on your phone. Definitely try a speed test while you are on 3G and let us know!

I had to take a drive to test. Solid 5 bars, 3G indicator and tested on DSL reports and mobilespeedtest.com, both gave same numbers 1127kbps.
Get the speedtest.com app in the market.that is a more reliable speed test app.

I am confused about the Vibrant's 3G capabilities on ATT network as well...
When I had my Nokia N95 unlocked it didn't work on TMO's 3G but did on ATT's network. The same deal with iPhones, they won't work on TMO's 3G and limited to EDGE.
Well, I will have TMO unlock my Vibrant and pop my blackberry's ATT card in to see what's the deal.
You should of got an iphone... Lol.
Good luck with working it all out!

Im Thinking of buying one off of ebay and was wondering if i unlock it, since the phone is meant for T-Mobiles "4g" will i my Data work and get 3g, and when AT&T gets 4g will it work for the device?

Once you unlock it for AT&T it will only function on EDGE, correct me if I'm wrong, not too sure if this phone is compatible with AT&T 3G network....most likely it will not.

oh.. do you know if the G2 or MyTouch 3g Slide is the same
Is the same for all t-mo phones. The Frequencies used by at&t and t-mobile for 3g are different. The most you will get is EDGE, and we all know that EDGE SUCKS
No 3g wont work. only 2g/edge will work as att and Tmobile have different data radios. If you have the old dataplan for att and don't want to pay 15 for 200mbs get a vibrant. If your lucky it'll pick up the 850mhz 3g band to get 3g for at&t. And you'll keep the old data plan because att wont pickup the imei of the vibrant.

oh, sorry, lol im talking in general At&t's network
but once i went into roaming, and i had 3G lol
If AT&T removed EDGE off their network that would leave GSM, 3G, and HSPA+... Or isn't EDGE and upgraded GSM... So it would leave just 3G and HSPA+
they cant get rid off EDGE or GSM,
1) GSM is their network removing it would leave the option of CDMA
2) EDGE will be there as long as there is 3G available.
That's right, edge is just faster gprs. Both are part of the GSM type network.
You are probably just getting spotty service during the upgrade. Once they are done in your area you should be back to normal.

T-Mobile is still going to operate as a separate entity for a long while. So I don't think you need worry - I think the TMO HD2s will continue to work on EDGE with the AT&T network. The question is if they will share towers (meaning that your phone would have G3), but even then you would have to register your APN for the T-Mobile network, which won't work with an AT&T SIM Card.
Do you think hd2 owners who have at&t will get to use tmobiles wavelength and finally get more than edge network from this happening??
For reference if new to this subject at&t and tmobile both have an EDGE network on the same wavelength so on an unlocked tmobile hd2 one can use the slow 2g internet connection of at&t, but the 3g networks run off of different bands so an at&t # can't connect to any 3g whatsoever, with at&t's purchase of tmobile wouldn't at&t have to utilize tmobiles 3g wavelength in order to still provide 3g and 3.5g to everyone with tmobile phones that aren't compatible with at&t's current network? If so then I'm personally benefitting from this and finally getting a decent mobile data speed on my tmobile phone with my at&t network
Please don't bash at&t here, I know they suck, I've used their service for quite some time now, I'm just looking for opinions and facts on this matter
and I know euro hd2's already pick up at&t 3g, I'm talking about tmous hardware
From what I have read it seems that in a year or so if this deal is accepted by the FCC at&t will reuse and refit tmobiles network towers/equipment to use there 4g LTE network and give it a boost while removing T-Mobile service altogether causing us T-Mobile 3g/4g users to get new phones that work on AT&T's data network so in your case I highly doubt it there really isn't a benefit for AT&T or T-mobile other then T-Mobile users will be able to have different range of phones (mostly iPhone) I really hope the FCC denies this deal not only does it kills another service provider option limiting us to 3 major companies and forces people escaping the high price of service from sprint, Verizon, and At&t (I've been on them all and left because of price and QOS) but also makes AT&T top dog just because they bought out another company
Yea I read about this yesterday. Highly pissed off. I can't stand at&t. Crappy phone signal, high prices, and crappy customer service. I hope this deal does not go through. Just like when sprint was supposed to buy tmobile. Hopefully it's just a rumor.

yeah, about 5 minutes after i posted this i saw the article stating that at&t is decommissioning tmobile's 3/3.5g towers to use them for their LTE, too bad at&t is already selling "4g" phones (ie the atrix and the inspire 4g) with no capability of utilizing TRUE 4g via LTE later on... anyone else think at&t will re-release said phones as LTE devices for $50 more than the hspa versions? i cant wait to switch to verizon personally, but im waiting for a htc pyramid compatible with verizons 4g network to switch
I received a letter from tmobile if I wanted to attend a meeting/conference for San Jose, Ca becuase my current phone service will be upgraded.... not removed....

No Tmobile and AT&T use sim cards and use totally different frequencies
If the deal passes I highly doubt that the T-mobile name will continue for long. Especially since both carriers operate on the voicestream network. This will combine T-mobile's few towers with ATT's many towers. But as someone mentioned earlier niether of these two have real 4G. It ticks me off when I see comercials calling it 4G. Only verizon is rolling out true 4G in LTE.
And in case you haven't heard. T-mobile was going down hill. They were losing money. There were talks of Sprint buying them at first. So it may be a good thing with ATT buying them up.
hey all, i was wondering if anyone had any information on the SGSII potentially coming to T-Mobile in the US. You'd only get EDGE data speeds. Your only hope for a version that works on T-Mobile's bands is if Wind Canada gets one. But the Canadian's on the forum have said it's a Bell Canada exclusive so it's a long shot.

Just got SGS2, it is connected to t-mobile usa, and it does only get EDGE speeds, and no HSPA+.
I can still keep it for trying out stuff for a bit, and would install any custom mods to try. If won't work, I may want to return it.
Is Wind Canada the only one with HSPA+ which is an option here?
There is no way to add only that support on top of a stock android?
The other feature that's needed to make it an excellent offering it T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling.
Any suggestions?
Ok, got an att sim and hspa+ works getting 6mbit downloads wih sgs2 now. Will only have that sim for test for three days. Though att is definitly costlier than tmobile for data and phone plans and they charge for overage rather than throttle.
Still my preference would be to hspa+ on tmobile, get tmobile wifi calling to work etc.
Also noted that tmobile wifi calling wont show as an app that backup software can see.

I don't see AT&T being quite more expensive unless you really need the unlimited minutes. Otherwise you could get the medianet plan since the S2 isn't detected as a smartphone, which will solve your data problem for overages.
On tmobile i pay $25 for 'unlimited' data which means after 5gb it is throttled. I am on a no contract plan. Price for contract plan is $30 for the same data plan.
If i dont pay for overage its great. Yet them not recognizing it as smartphone may not hold for too long, as us flavors of s2 are being prepared.
While it does last that they dont recognise it as a smartphone, are you also on smallest data plan and pay the minimum?

T-mobile uses 1700 and 2100, not 900 and 2100.
That would explain it.
Rrr, guess i missed the same point about tmobile's bands. There was a list of the 4 freauencies and no distinction of which one is for voice, data etc.
So running a speed test using AnTuTu benchmark clearly shows sgsii is a great pick performance wise as it is dominating the charts. Though that app lack a distinction for original cpu speeds. I may overclock it if i get time as its a fun game, thouhgh not right now.
Data plan wise, on att usa, you are on $15 for non smartphone. The its ar their mercy, and they could identify sgsii as smartphone anytime in which case we'd loose that excellent option, right?
Now got my previous smartphone, mytouch 4g with tmobile on a family plan. And that one would likely not fit on att hspa+ eigher. I can validate it later with my test card from att.
Phone plan wise att family starts at $69 for 700 min for two lines, and they also got 550 min unadvertized for $10 less. This is still $10 above t mobile base for family at $49, yet no big deal if att data is cheaper at $15 with the mentioned 'non smartphone' option.
With att data on hspa+, you vuys easily use the mobile access point without limitations? Have anyone tried vpning and working on that, remote desktop to work machine for a significant time, full working day, etc?
With my att test sim, hspa+ downloads are fine, anywhere from 1.5 to 6 mbits, uploads sometimes were slow around 300

To save you and everyone else the trouble, as of now:
- There is no AT&T phone that supports HSPA+ on T-Mobile's network
- There is no T-Mobile phone that supports HSPA+ on AT&T's network
- There is no unbranded phone that supports HSPA+ on T-Mobile and AT&T, you have to pick one or the other. The SGS2 does not support, and most likely will never support, T-Mobile's funky AWS bands.
The Hercules is rumored to have AT&T's bands. So was the G2X and it didn't.
Thanks, that clarifies.
To maintain at least HSPA+ speeds, I can either Of two options:
- keep sgsii, move to AT&T, find how to migrate another existing smartphone since my tough 4g won't work with AT&T's data. *Maybe sell it and get another AT&T phone.
- return sgsii and stay on tmobile.
Have talked to AT&T support, and they confirmed that data plans for non smartphones begin at $10. *And that sgsii does not show as anything in their systems now neither a smartphone nor a non-smartphone. *And that it is correct that they can't guarantee anything about not identifying it as a smartphone in future.
So the best chance of the $15 data for non smartphones to last is if we get lucky enough that when they do launch the us AT&T version of sgsii, then the international one will be left out.
I am not exactly clear why the $15 non smartphone plan is needed over the $10 one. *Though, cant test too much with my AT&T temp sim, as they didn't want to change the plan the store gave me due to being on a trial period.
Still got today to try att sim out and can return with no fees, so will call or step by the store and check if that would be possible. *One challenge is that they already saw the phone and got excited, and listed it as a smartphone plan. * ..., we'll see how it goes...
Then I am also reading that AT&T talks about a dual LTE/HSPA+ support, yet that lte may take time to be battery friendly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162330&page=2). *
So possibly waiting for LTE to mature is not practical, in which case maybe no point in waiting for AT&T us version of sgsii which may only add LTE.
Coming from tmobile hspa+ usage since nov 2010, now when testing AT&T, it is more influenced from during the day traffic and speeds are slower vs faster speeds at less conventional hours. *Also seeing some sporadic speed tests issues coming from another device using the wifi hotspot - usually the upload, sometimes download too is near zero speed. *While most speed tests are decent. *Then have not seen any of that on tmobile.
One issue making me consider moving to AT&T is that tmobiles speeds in my new place are very bad for hspa+ if it at all it gets an*hspa signal. *Used to never need wifi and get consistent 4-6 mbits downloads ..., now getting even 1 from tmobile is a challenge.
Then, would like fast Internet when traveling overseas. *And tmobiles phone worked well last time with fast speeds. * Then I have seen some mentioning that tmobiles bands could be better for world traveling than AT&T, is that so?
(For instance*http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=4d1bbd0f46632e8d&hl=en has:
I can only say I use T-Mobile version and it IS working. I don't have AT&T one, can say nothing about it. Reason I have in mind while selecting model - in the most of the world T-Mobile version will have better coverage.
)

- keep sgsii, move to AT&T, find how to migrate another existing smartphone since my tough 4g won't work with AT&T's data. *Maybe sell it and get another AT&T phone.
- return sgsii and stay on tmobile.

- The $10 plan requires an unlimited messaging plan. The $15 plan is a stand-alone.
- The carrier versions of the SGS2 will have different model numbers and a different series of IMEI codes so I doubt that would effect the international SGS2 in AT&T's database.
- Our SGS2 won't support LTE. But it's going to take AT&T at least a year and a half to get any meaningful LTE penetration.
- I came from T-Mobile. AT&T's HSPA+ clocks a lot slower than T-Mobile's and isn't as widely available. For some reason though, things like video buffer less for me even though the speeds clock slower.
- AT&T is far better for international travel. They have roaming data plans you can pre-purchase that are less than 1/4 of what T-Mobile charges. Also, because the SGS2 is unlocked, you can pick up a SIM locally if you want to.
I'm surprised T-Mo isn't getting the GSII, they're usually good with Android.Well, this sucks...

No offense, but they're also the smallest carrier and are in the process of going away. I'm guessing they're getting an Infuse variant instead because Samsung's got the production capacity and probably cut them a deal.
