Just recently got a streak and have been tinkering to get it ready for rom flashing when a froyo or two appear and just want to check my clockworkmod recovery has worked correctly.
A brief history of what i've got and done:-
Device is an o2 uk model with 2.1 update 1 on it.
Used androot to root it then root explorer to remove the recovery-install.sh then terminal emulator to install clockworkmod 2.5.0.1.
(didn't use adb as i'm on win7 x64 and it doesn't want to work )
When i enter clockworkmod recovery the screen displays and at the bottom after the menu it says:-
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't find MISC:
So question is is this ok or should i try an earlier version?
Cheers
Paul

Download PDAnet for android and use the driver included with that package instead of the dell driver.
I am using Win7 x64 also. My adb works fine now.

Cheers i'll give that a bash
What clockwork recovery are you using?
i get the same error..
clockwork still worked for me even with the that error.
i found out by accident, scrolled around, pressed power button a couple of times, scrolled up and down and press the camera button a few times on the option and it worked. weird. i noticed like maybe i didn't press the button in deep enough.
I see that error too. Despite it, flashed to Froyo using update_new.zip with no major issues.
That is normal behaviour, wrong is to see a message "Can't mount" so you are all set up to roll on froyo, good luck you won't regret.

None of the above at the moment since I went back to 1.6 from 2.1 build 6941. 1.8.1.7 is the only one that seems to work on 1.6 and it doesn't work that well (buggy).
The new one should work on 2.1, so I hear.
I'll be swapping to the new 2.2 beta soon so we shall see.
What can you do, if you have the can't mount error?
e: can't mount cache:recovery/command
same here
i wondered the same but as my clockwork works i havent worried too much about it... however everytime i attempt a nandroid backup, its fine till near the end when it says data failed, then if i try to restore the backup i get md5**** mismatch?
ive got used to starting from scratch everytime i do anything but it would be nice to have it working properly!
Don't bother with Clockwork, as Nandroid doesn't work! Use the recovery from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840326 instead as the Nandroid on this works perfectly! Saves a lot of time not having to re-install everything when something goes wrong

brilliant...thank you!
Sorry for the wrong model, but i'm having this issue on a Desire too. I've routed the Device with unrevoked without a problem, then wanted to create a Nandroid, which doesn't work.
Also i've tried to wipe data and cache, CWM said all good, but after restart all Data is still there.
Could that be ROM related, the Rom is T-Mobile, not any official HTC Rom.

Okay so my original post is below and thanks to DonJuan692006 I see that I need to flash my ROM with recovery.
But as described below, I can't flash the ROM with fastboot, adb or terminal.
So my question now is is there anything to try other than using a goldcard to fix the Perfected SPL?
Thanks.
Okay I'm fairly computer literate but admittedly know next to nothing about the Android OS or smartphones in general (as you'll soon see).
Anyway a friend gave me her rooted myTouch 3G and everything worked fine on it, but all of her crap was still on it and so, wanting to start fresh, I went through the menu and did a factory reset.
After doing this I went to sign into my Google account but couldn't because I don't have a data plan. I borrowed a friend's SIM card who does have a data plan and everything appears to work fine, i.e. "Your Google account is now linked to this phone." and I even get new mail notification in the status bar, but when I click on "Finish setup", I get:
The application Setup Wizard (process com.android.setupwizard) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again
And I'm then prompted again to sign in to my Google account... and the process repeats.
I've been reading through forums all day but I honestly don't even know what I should be looking for.
I'm pretty clueless here... so any help is greatly appreciated.

You need yo reflash the ROM your using via recovery. A search will get you where you need.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Okay so it looks like I won't be able to flash using any of the common methods.
fastboot won't work because I have the HBOOT-1.33.0006 perfected SPL.
adb won't work because I can't get my phone to show up under "adb devices" (though it shows up fine under "fastboot devices")... I've reinstalled different versions of the USB drivers many times to no avail.
terminal won't work because I can't get past the initial Google sign in screen to access any apps.
So is creating a goldcard to fix the perfected SPL the only thing left to do? Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks again.
Did you try booting into recovery? With the phone off hold the home button and press the power button. Continue to hold the home button while the phone boots. You should get a recovery menu. Post what you see there.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Yes I'm able to do that. I see
Code:
Android system recovery <2e>
Use trackball to highlight;
click to select.
reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]
wipe cache partition
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
The first thing I would suggest doing is to update your recovery. Can someone help him out with using ROM Manager to install ClockWorkMod or AmonRa's recoveries? I've never personally used ROM Manager to do anything so I don't want to tell you how to do it.
Wouldn't both Amon_RA's and the ClockworkMod's recovery.img files require the telnet client (I don't it installed and currently can't get past the initial Google sign in to access any apps even if I did)? Or is there another way to update the recovery?
Ah right. So do this. Download CM 5.0.8-DS and the Google Add-on. Rename CM to update.zip and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery, click the two wipe options and follow the on-screen instructions, and click flash update.zip and let it do its thing. Reboot which should get you into the ROM, may take a few minutes to boot. Then rename the Google Add-on to update.zip and put it on the root of your SD card (you will have to move the first update.zip file off the SD card first). Boot back into recovery and select flash from update.zip again, reboot after it finishes and you should be good. You can then download ROM Manager and slap on a new recovery.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Okay when trying to flash CM (renamed to update.zip), I get the following:
Code:
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: No signature (567 files)
E: Verification failed
Installation aborted.
I verified the zip file (before renaming it to update.zip) with MD5 if that makes a difference.
Weird, where did you download it from?

I downloaded it from the CyanogenMod forum... but oh well I ended up just making a goldcard and now everything's good.
Thanks for the help.

NOO.. Dude yoyu seriously overread into this.
If it already had been rooted, there is no point in making a goldcard as you will just screw something up. And all this because you didnt just hit the home button again. When that error pops up, all you have to do is close it and hit home and your done.
You dont need a telnet client and havent really for a while, especilly if your already rooted.
Gold cards are for phones that have not been rooted so dont waste your time.
Your best bet is, turn on the phone. let it boot. This is where people mess up because they have no patience. If that error pops up, just hit the home button. Sign into Wifi, Go to market, get Rom Manager. Go into rom manager, Flash Clockwork recovery, go to download roms, download the newest Cyanogen, install it and clock where it says download gapps. Backup and wipe. Now let it do its thing, reboot, have some patience for about 10 min and do it again, now your starting from scratch.
Again, Im glad you did soem research as most people dont here, but you read way to far into it and looked up rooting from scratch which you dont need to do
Using: ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0
Completely powering off and/or rebooting system from recovery, keep getting stuck back into recovery and cannot get anything to boot, even after restoring the very first backup I made.
Error is: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
What I did:
1: Rooted using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103
2: Booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery and made a backup.
3. Wiped cache/data and tried flashing midNIGHT midNIGHT ROM v3.2 CW3/EXT4 AIO (Build Your Own ROM Edition UPDATED) from here: http://lostandtired.com/android-development (it seemed to install just fine!)
4. Tried to boot but it would not go past the Samsung boot logo
5. Yanked battery, reinstalled, same problem.
6. Wiped again, tried to restore backup, now it automatically boots into recovery and shows this error at the bottom.
Please help!
EDIT:
When I try to restore a backup (that I made before doing anything) It says:
Checking MD5 sums...
Restoring system...
Restoring data...
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
Restoring cache...
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext.
Restore complete!
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
Please help me, I will pay you!
I just got this phone a few days ago... so I'm freaking out right now!
EDIT: I just installed Odin and booted into "download mode" -- downloading the stock tar now... I hope this takes care of it
Problem solved.
Odin FTW!!!
Your problem was that you flashed an ext4 only rom in rfs. You need to convert file systems to use midnight.
As you figured out, Odin puts everything back to stock.
Also, the nandroid backup and restore does not restore your kernel. If you are using to to restore, make sure you have a kernel on the sdcard to flash.
It must be going around
Man I am having the same problem you did I want to know where did you get your odin file from mine says it is installed but I dont see where to open it. I had my epic for about 3wks going crazy as well need your help but very optimistic
What are you trying to open?
If odin flashed your phone, then just turn the phone on and you have the rom that odin flashed.
relief
Prblem solved thanks guys
I've done the exact same thing. same phone same everything lol, but when i use odin, my computer doesnt recognize my samsung epic4g, i"ve restarted my computer and uninstalled and redownloaded my drivers twice. I'm trying the process with all the computers in my house, but in the meantime, could someone please give my some hints or tips as to what i could do otherwise?
EDIT: i almost get this driver error message "BlackArmor NAS 1D | no driver found"
Not quite sure why something so simple is turning out to be complicated. Also i run Windows7 32-bit

Nice!! Welcome Back
OMG, I thought I bricked my phone... thankfully I stumbled across this thread and also this video on youtube: /watch?v=pleE_tzmiMo
I was trying to install midNIGHT ROM when this happened... I guess I need to read futher on how to properly install the ROM (Unless someone has a quick hint as to what I need to make it work)
With Odin, It will restore back to the factory firmware and work just fine, but If I re-root the phone and try to restore my nandroid backup it just hangs at the Samsung screen again. Any ideas?
just advanced restore /data and see if that gets around what is causing your phone to hang. Were you running a rom when you did the backup? You may need to reflash that rom, then advanced restore /data.
And get cwm 3 to flash midnight and other ext4 roms. There is a different one-click just for that after you do the one-click v2.5.5.
Do you have links to cwm3 and the one-click that you mentioned?
This is my first attempt at flashing the EPIC, so my backup was not a modified rom. (When I had my Hero I had no issues at all flashing a custom rom)
When this happens I am have to reflash with odin back to stock firmware, as my backups don't work for some reason. Strangely if I try to restore my nandroid backup after the stock firmware is back on there, I get the same results of it hanging on the samsung screen.
Yes, as has been mentioned, if you're going to a rom that uses the ext filesystem, you have to use the cwm3. I don't have the link., but if you look up "Randy Shear" on youtube, he has a video posted on how to install it.
hey guys im having a big and really annoying problem i cant fix hopin in can get some help...
i have the iced glacier 1.1.6 with clockwork 3.0.0.5(rom managerv3.0.1.0). i want to make a backup nanDroid.. so i do and it completes and everythings fine... until i to the restoring part. after it "successfully" restores(yes, i did wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and even wiped eveything in everyorder possible. i restart my phone and it freezes on the mytouch 4g bootup logo. everytime. no matter what. it does let me reinstall the fresh ice glacier rom...
note: when i wipe the dalvik, its almost instantaneous wipe, like it doesnt do it?
there is an error about e:/ not mounted (sd-ext) or something close to that. but still says it worked.
things ive tried...
renaming the file.
moved the file.
reformatted SD.
wipe data...etc twice in a row to make sure it wiped.
any ideas?
You have to revert back to older Recovery 2.5.1.2 or you can install the new 3.0.0.6 as normal CWM won't able to handle it. This same issue has been covered many times. Read the quote below to better understand if you still have problem well then post back ill help.
jggimi said:
you are using the wrong version of Recovery to install the new kernel. I'm guessing #2, because it's very common for people to assume a higher number is better, and use CWM Recovery 3.0.0.5 with Froyo-based ROMs and hose things up really well.
Restoration options, if you are using CWM 3.0.0.5:
a) Restore from the Nandroid backup you made before overlaying your kernel. Oh, yeah, you can't, you didn't make one, otherwise you'd have already done that and wouldn't have posted....
b) Flash the appropriate CWM Recovery (2.5.1.2 for Froyo-based ROMs) using adb from your PC. Reboot into it, find the kernel you wanted to use, and reinstall it.
c) Install a Gingerbread-based ROM, such as CM7.
Pick a,b, or c. If you have any specific questions, please ask.

Sorry I was asleep but if you still looking for the solution.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952433
Go to option's thread and follow his instructions on howto install 3.0.0.6 as it works also.
I am having some serious issues with my evo. I have tried 10 different methods, googled 100 different help guides and still no fix.
I had originally rooted my phone using simple root and put the "fixed" froyo rom on there. Everything worked fine, but I was outdated and having some really slow issues so I wanted to try a new rom...Fresh.
Well I tried a few methods, but I somehow reverted my evo back to a nonroot of the original OS. Whenever i go into hboot, my recovery does not work. I push the PC36img and load it, then restart then I attempt to go to my recovery where it gives me the error picture with the yellow/red triangle. I then select recovery (after pressing UP volume and powerbutton) and try to load update from sd card. Everytime I do that I get a Failed error.
I've tried to reroot using several methods off this website, I've done everything I can to get it working but can't. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Try reflashing your recovery image.
BTW I have hboot 79.0 with S-ON, so it looks like I def became unrooted.

Not sure how it would have just unrooted itself. I would run an RUU from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
Then, I would re-root and start clean again.

RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed

ok, finally got it working. Had to restart the phone manually and try it on a different computer. It updated it to the newer version of android and hboot, thank goodness! That was the easiest and most productive thing I've been able to do so far, thanks!
Well now I try to boot into recovery and get the same error:

Then I get :

Ok, so, I think you said you got the RUU working which would have completely restored the phone to unrooted and stock from factory.
Now, you need to re-root your phone using one of the methods on xda. I used the manual method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045. However, many people have had success with the one-click methods.
After you re-root (which will likely included installing a recovery), select a rom you want to try, boot to recovery, wipe and flash it. A great starter ROM is MikFroyo 4.6 or 4.5.
Try downloading the PC36IMG.zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
put that on the root of your SD card, then boot into HBOOT and it should find that PC36IMG.zip after a few seconds and ask if you want to flash it. Choose yes and let it finish. Should then be able to reboot into recovery.
ok thanks, i'll try it when I get back home

Ok, I tried this method...the filesize of pc36img.zip is only 3.5mb, but it didn't seem to work. It scanned the file then just went back to the hboot screen with my options never asking to flash.
I'm going to try to reroot using the other method now...
So I clicked the link and he forwarded to the autoroot.bat page so I used his method. It worked well (the 2nd time around) all the way until it started to push amon_ra_1.8-mod.... then after that it says rebooting into the bootloader, and it reboots into it and just says waiting for phone...
It does appear that my phone is rooted now, but my recovery is still not working. If I use ROM manager will it work since my phone is rooted or do I need to have a rooted ROM to run it off of?

Does your phone show s-off while in the bootloader? If so you should be able to run the FlashZip script and use that to flash the pc36img-sprintlovers zip. That one contains everything needed to bring your phone up to date and will leave you with a rooted rom and recovery.

FINALLY! Thanks a million! My recovery is now working and it installed the built in sprinter lovers rom, I guess the anti-virus was stopping it so I disabled it and ran the flash script. I was able to install Fresh on there, just to try it out. I do have a few questions though:
1. I noticed after going through many pages that to update to a newer ROM version you don't always have to wipe clean, you can just install (or flash) the new update? I noticed in Fresh there is a built in app that does that. Is this true for most ROMS or only certain ones?
2. I assume I am using the RA recovery. I noticed the backup/restore feature on there. What exactly does that backup and when should I use it?
3. I've noticed I've been very low with memory on my phone (not SD card), I have about 258MB free. How can I clear space and when I mount my phone what files are important to keep and can I get rid of, is it okay to get rid of my rom.zip's and radio.zip's?
Thanks again to everyone, autoroot was def the most painless root ever.

1) You'll want to always wipe your cache/dalvik (I do everytime I'm in the recovery) but the Data depends on the ROM. Usually if you are going from one sense rom to another you are ok and the same for AOSP to AOSP. Going from Sense to AOSP you'll need to wipe data though.
2) Autoroot comes with a modified version of AmonRA, they are mostly just speed tweaks. To make a complete backup of your ROM select Boot (kernel), System (ROM), Data (Apps & Settings) and .android (apps on SD card)
3) You can delete the zips from your sd card if you don't need them but that's about normal for free memory.

Royalginger requires recovery 3.0.0.6 or 3.0.2.4....3.0.0.5 was mainly for cm7 but clockwork updated to flash froyo & gingerbread now... I believe u can dwnload a cm7 rom to the sd card frm the pc then try to flash that if that dnt wrk then if u rooted by using gfree method & have the 0.85.2007 bootloader it should of created a part7xxxx.bin file & that will help unrootin the phne & startin frm scratch again...
Theres a couple threads on here that could help u out,ur not fully bricked tho... I had this issue about 3 months ago when there barely was a fix now at least u have a chance..
i have the 0.86.0000 bootloader, will that be a problem? if not if i google how to unroot i should be able to find it easily?
i also downloaded cm7 tried to install, and the same rom and issues still pop up, so i guess my only choice is to unroot, but how do i unroot without using terminal?

If you rooted with gfree, go back to the thread that guided you. It has instructions on how to unroot. Basically you want to place part7backupxxxxxx.zip on the root of your SD, download PD15IMG.zip, place on root of SD, then load bootloader and let it do it's thing, responding when prompted. If you can't mount the card you're going to have to find a way to mount it outside of the phone, either with an adapter or a card reader.

You need the engineering bootloader to use adb, both will run the PD15IMG.zip.

The reason we talk about is pretty simple. .85 allows you to use ADB commands and flash stuff via the HBoot engine. Where .86 does not allow you to. So if you get in "semi-brick" mode you can 9/10 times get your self up and rocking.
had it happen earlier today as a matter of fact.

and this one rings a bell....

They were both what most people would call bricked, but since they had the .85 engineering screen we could get them up and running.
